Do You Know (How Long I've Been Waiting)
She took a last, wistful glance at her books and stood, leaving the library under sufferance. She really wasn't interested in watching the Quidditch match, but she also knew that it probably wasn't worth the aggravation she would receive if she didn't go.
Albus tugged her along, a wide grin on his face. He loved it when their houses faced off against each other, though Rose didn't know why. Gryffindor would win, they always did when they faced Slytherin. Or at least, they had in the years that Rose had been at the school, and since she was in her sixth year.
Rose took her seat in the stands just as the players were lifted into the air by their brooms. Jennifer, her housemate, wrapped a Gryffindor scarf around Rose's neck, rolling her eyes when Rose looked at her questioningly.
"You always forget to fetch your scarf," Jennifer said in explanation, shrugging her shoulders.
"Thanks."
She could just see Albus across from her in the opposite stands. He waved at her before turning his attention to the sky. Rose followed his example, and though she cheered when Gryffindor put the Quaffle through the middle hoop a few moments later, she couldn't help her eyes being drawn to the blonde circling the game from higher up in the sky.
Scorpius' blonde hair was glinting in the sunlight, and she could see the look of utmost focus on his face as he searched for the shiny golden snitch.
She knew Scorpius of course, he was Albus' best friend, but as the years had passed, he'd pulled away from the friendship she thought they had. It was ridiculous, he seemed almost shy around her now whenever their paths crossed.
Sighing to herself, she forced herself to look away from him and back to the action happening between the chasers.
…
"Did you see that catch, though?" Albus asked, his eyes alight with happiness.
Rose nodded, a small smile on her face. "Scorp did well," she agreed. "Shame it didn't help Slytherin win."
Albus snorted. "With the Gryffindor Chasers, we never stand a chance. Scorpius wanted to keep the score margins close, and this way, you only beat us by thirty points."
Rose nodded again. "True. Slytherin actually have a chance to take the cup if they play better than we do against the Ravens and the 'Puffs."
"Exactly. See you tomorrow?" Albus asked, as they came to the staircase.
Rose nodded, waving him off to the dungeons as she climbed the stairs. She knew the Common Room would be already wild with celebrations, but she wasn't heading there. Instead, she returned to her favourite table in the library, happy to find that Madam Pince hadn't moved the books.
The old Librarian liked her, and often left her table alone when she was tidying the place up.
Settling herself at the table, Rose pulled the Charms book she'd been reading towards her.
…
"Hey."
Rose jumped, looking up from her book to see Scorpius standing by the table, a charmingly awkward look on his face.
"Mind if I join you?"
She waved her hand at the seat facing hers. "Help yourself. I thought you'd be celebrating that rather spectacular catch you made earlier."
He blushed lightly, ducking his head. "We didn't win. We only party when we win."
She grinned but nodded in acceptance. "What are you studying?"
"Potions."
"I still need to research for that essay," she muttered. "All the books on Felix Felicis have been checked out though."
He pulled one of the books from his bag and held it up to show her. "I can come sit there and we'll share if you like?" he offered.
She grinned. "Life saver."
…
They studied quietly for a couple of hours, each working on the same essay. Their arms brushed a few times, and their thighs got closer until they were pressed together. Rose blamed it on them each wanting to get closer to the open book in between them.
"Hogsmeade this weekend," Scorpius muttered, his cheeks colouring. "Are you going?"
Rose nodded, packing away her things. "Probably."
"Do you want, I mean, will you, will you come with me?"
"And Al?"
"Erm, no. Just… Rose, will you go on a date with me? In Hogsmeade. This weekend."
Rose grinned. "Sure. I'd like that."
He sighed with relief and returned her smile. "Do you know how long I've been trying to get up the courage to ask you that?"
Her eyes sparkled. "Do you know how long I've been waiting for you to?"
