"Where to now?" I gaze upon the map on my phone. I am supposed to go to Boston now getting to my second objective, finding that intersection that was used as a meeting place for the DDF and UDF leaders. It was a bit difficult since there is no specific location of where it was taken.
Taking shelter inside a small abandoned cafe to avoid suspicions i keep looking at the map. Examining every single intersection in Boston proved to be a monumental task for one man alone. I could have requested some backup but that would smell suspicious as hell.
Scratch that from my option list.
How about summoning several brawlers using my pack leader ability?. Sounds pretty good but that also create problem. The UDF soldiers could decimate them in seconds and me intervening trying to explain their appearance surely will blow my cover.
Scratch that again.
I guess it has come down to the final option: using all my strength to examine every single intersection one by one. "Oh well at least i will find it... eventually."
I assume the Blackwatch captain disguise again and i proceed to the nearest UDF base around. I am planning to get a helicopter or maybe a humvee to arrive faster. But going back to the UDF HQ would be considered as suicide. Any sane man would wave their hands and walk away muttering hell no.
I pick up my radio and ask for the nearest UDF base. "This is Captain Luke Earnest, is there any UDF base nearby, over?" "Copy Captain Earnest, This is Red Crown, the nearest base is located in grid 2-9 codename India Seven, 5 blocks from you to the west." A male dispatcher informed me. "Thank you Red Crown, Earnest out". And with that i zoomed through the street sprinting like hell. I hope they wont notice me doing suspicious things'. The streets were quiet as there are only a few patrols rolling around, probably a convoy consisting of 3 tanks and 4 UDF soldier squads.
The landscape hasn't change pretty much either. Most skyscrapers were blown up or torn up mostly or crumbled when the battle for the city took over. Many buildings also burnt or destroyed. Roads cracked or missing a large chunk of it. Underground sewer can be seen some times beneath the ripped out road.
The military cannot do anything to repair the buildings but they can repair the roads to pave the way for moving infantry and vehicles. Damaged bridges were repaired hastily as long as it can sustain continous weight from the traffic.
I sneak around the block and finally meet the field base India Seven. The base itself wasn't very huge. It was suppose to be a momentary base to deploy soldiers to the front. Several tanks and APCs were seen being repaired or mantained. Scratch and dent can be seen with naked eye as a result from a contact of something sharp and hard.
The DDF monsters were the main reason for that. The hydra's razor sharp mouth can easily penetrate the APC armor and cause damage to tanks. to the APC it means instant death but for the tanks concussion is the issue.
Helicopters also being placed on the roof. they are being loaded with new ammunitions and rockets for the next engagements.
"Sir, identify yourself" A corporal snapped me out of my sight seeing. "Captain Earnest, Luke Earnest". The soldier salutes me. "Where is your company sir?" "They all dead" I swiftly answer. "I'm sorry for your loss" "It is fine, anyway i need a vehicle" i said. "For what sir?" "I need to collect their dog tags. I want to send them back to their families knowing their husband or dad has died honorably on the battlefield" I answered.
The soldier noddes his head and lead me to the base commander. After we passed the biometric scanner we enter the base which is quite big. It has several floors and it goes underground as well. I think it leads to the armory. Some soldiers are seen patroling around in pair.
Researchers were conducting several experiments and test towards the virus and what not. I don't want to know either anyway. He guide me through a series of corridor and finally leads me to a room.
He knock on the door and a reply comes from the room. "Come in" We enter the room and see the base commander. He is wearing the new Blackwatch commander attire consisting of a full head helmet with glowing blue visor. An armored vest with yellow stripes and as well a black colored pants. On his holster there's an M1911.
The corporal salute him and vice versa before seeing me. "Identify yourself". I step forward and salute him first before introducing myself. "My name is Captain Luke Earnest. I am the commanding officer of Alpha company from the 23rd division." He nodded his head and introduce himself. "My name is Captain Logan Folker. Acting as base commander India Seven." He saluted me as well before getting to the topic.
"What brings you here? Where is your company?". "All of them are dead in the fighting that occured in UDF main HQ" I answered. He shook his head as a sign of remorse. "I am sorry for your loss" "It is okay. They are hard to kill. They fought to their last drop of blood." I continued.
He nodded and went to fill in some reports. Judging from the height of the report stack it is going to be a pain in his ass, back, head, hand and much more.
"You haven't answered my first question yet captain" He inquired. "I need transport to get me back to the UDF base. A humvee would be nice." He nodded and continue to filling the reports of a soldier who happens to went AWOL.
"How and why did you get here?" "Uprising. It is start to get out of control and i have no one left to command so i escape from the chaos and use a humvee that went broke before i reached this base" I lied.
He nodded again and grab another file to write something. "I've heard about it. Damn bastard. Those sucker Prototype defected to the DDF side but they wont leave anything unscrewed. They decide to frame the leaders before running away laughing their asses off."
I had to fight the urge to punch him in the face. So i kept my fist balled beside me. He took a quick glance at me. "Is that all captain? What makes you want to return to the base? You know damn well it is possibly overrun by the protesters?".
I snorted. "Really? Us, a bunch of elite military soldier trained to kill sons of bitches born from an extremely deadly virus against a random group of civilian who probably die from the recoil of a gun?" I joked a bit. He laugh at my remark and so was the corporal beside him. "You got that right. But never underestimate the power in number. We may be many but they are like grain of sands on the beaches. Not to mention that a large chunk of our force defected to their side as well. I believe you heard the news?"
I nodded my head in acknowledgement. He flip the report close and stack it beside the finished reports. "Alright. Corporal get him a working Humvee. You are dismissed captain" We saluted each other and went outside with the corporal.
"I will ask a techinican to fetch you a brand new Humvee. Wait here" He go one floor below and disappear from my line of sight. I hope he didn't take long because i am itching to get the fuck out of this huge pile of brick shit called base.
A minute later came my order as a brand new Humvee revved its engine and parked in front of me. The corporal got out and let me enter the humvee. "Alright captain this is your ride back. She is new so give her some love otherwise she would get grumpy." He crack a joke. "I hear ya Corporal. Thank you anyway" "You welcome sir. Have a safe journey." I waved at him and exited the base via the garage. I drive to the front gate and made my way through the deserted street of Boston.
"Damn this'll take forever." Which fucking intersection? i don't have a fucking clue. There are thousands of intersection here and i wont spending an entire day sitting my ass of in a fucking moving metal box with tire. But then it flashed before me.
Humphrey's death flashed before my eyes. I could see those icy blue eyes shut forever after a brutal attack conducted by Greene and her fucking allies. I remember that i did this to end the hostility between these two factions. The UDF and the rebel forces. I hope i can end this before any blood is spilled to the ground.
I stopped to the first intersection and look around. I pull out my phone to compare this intersection and that one. After a brief viewing i decide it is not the right one. I climb back to the humvee and drive again.
It didn't take me a long time before i got into another intersection. This time it is bigger than in the video so without even getting out of the car i already know, it is not the right one.
'This is going to be a long day" i mused. Well as long as i did not do anything suspicious to the patrol around the city i don't think they don't mind having me touring around the city like a madman.
"If anyone sees me riding a humvee alone driving, it would surely bring suspicion. But hey, i hopefully can handle the ordeal". And with that in mind i shift the gear and move along to the next intersection.
"Where is this fucking intersection? Why it has to be in there? Who not in a fucking building? Wait that's even harder. Why not at some landmark where i can find them easily? Hold up, that does not makes sense either it's too exposed. Underground sewers? Probably but smells awful. Rooftops? Even worse, satellite can detect them in a few moment and the next they know a Tomahawk cruise missile blow their asses to oblivion."
My rambling continues on and on thinking what does not need to be questioned. I come to a halt in an intersection. I pull my phone and compare the one on the phone and in real life. "Hmm looks identical" I mumbled. I scan the surroundings and it looks like i am in the spot. Making sure that i am not mistaken i glance back and forth to my phone and the site.
"This is the spot." I look around and see a camera that overlook the intersection. I tilt my head and walk to it. When i stand directly below it i realize it is from the same position that the recording took place days ago. It gives the identical overview of the intersection. Perfect.
Climbing a bit i remove the side panel of the camera and examine its serial number. "Camera #2912. I should check it on a base." I put the panel back on and hop down to the ground.
Dusting myself off i hop into the humvee again and drive away.
I'm going back to base India Seven to see if i can borrow one of their computer station so i can access the whole surveilance camera network that is in the city. I just hope i can find a silver lining in this whole mess before it's too late.
A/N: I'm sorry if this is shorter than usual it's because i am not in the mood to write so i am hoping the next chapter could be longer. Stay tuned and see you all later! Peace!.
