"You've been distant lately. Ever since we came back."
Mary Eunice looked up from the papers in her lap and scowled at her lover, sitting across from her with a raised eyebrow, her arms crossed over her chest. She glanced back down at her hands, and downright growled. "Have I?"
Lana shifted in her seat, slowly, leisurely, almost as if she enjoyed watching the young blonde squirm. Her black eyes glinted in the soft light. "Yes." She hummed. The nun gazed up again as the word dripped out from between the brunette's lips, and she couldn't help but notice that Lana's movements were now graceful, insightful. Wanting.
"Sorry."
Lana's eyebrow raised higher and Mary Eunice froze as she heard the woman's chair scraping back. She watched from the corner of her eye, her hand desperately trying to finish the word she was writing, as her lover slinked to her side and came to stand behind her.
Lana's hands wandered to lay on her chest, her mouth behind her ear. "I miss you." She purred. Mary Eunice's head lolled sideways, onto a resting arm, and she sighed, her eyes slipping shut. "Aren't you tired of giving your life to Briarcliff?"
"Aren't you?"
"I'm done with that place. As you should be. You're mother superior now, what do you care?" Lana continued, nibbling on her earlobe. She smiled against Mary Eunice as she heard the blonde's breath hitch. "Who gave you the right to be so distant with me?"
Mary Eunice tugged herself away to look up into Lana Winter's black eyes. "We did."
Lana stood up straight.
"We agreed to it." The blonde added, and turned back to her paperwork.
"Why?"
Annoyed, Mary Eunice threw her pen down. It skittered over the oaken table and fell to the floor. "Maybe I'm afraid of hurting you."
"Just you?" The brunette demanded, voice harsh. The blonde's head whipped around to glare at the reporter, but it was lost on the older woman, her baby blue eyes too bright for Lana to bristle back. Lana took a small breath. "Just you then."
"I have paperwork to finish."
"Is that it?" Lana hissed angrily. "You have paperwork to finish, so you send me away? I'm not your subordinate. I'm asking for some recognition here."
Mary Eunice stood, blinking between gold and blue as she struggled to breathe, struggled to contain herself.
"You can't hurt me, how many times will I have to tell you that?" The brunette whispered, stepping closer to her lover. "You can't hurt me, especially now, so what are you really afraid of?"
The blonde looked away, her fingers finding Lana's in midair. "I'm afraid of letting myself go. I'm afraid of being weak. Too weak for you."
"You? Weak? What brought this on?" Lana's breath tickled Mary Eunice's ear, and she shivered against her.
"Judy Martin left quite a lot of souvenirs in her office." The blonde admitted quietly, blue eyes tearing up as she fixed a faraway point. "There was a time when I was naive. When I was stupid. When I was so alone and without you and destined to die unloved." She paused. "I might have grown from it, I might have wisened up, I might have changed myself completely, but those times have left a shadow on my soul. Our souls." She corrected herself at the Devil within her screamed for acknowledgment, and wiped at her nose. "I just wanted to take charge for once."
The brunette tucked a stray strand of blonde hair behind the girl's ear, her movements reassuring. "There's no shame in being weak, once in a while. I love you for it. Sometimes your guard comes down and that's all there is to it. Embrace it."
"How can you love a coward?"
"Weak does not equal coward. It never has." Lana shook her head, her nails raking down Mary Eunice's back. "I love my blue eyed she-devil, just as much as my golden eyed sphinx." She smirked. "And now that I'm your queen, it's a little too late to back out of loving you, don't you think?"
Mary Eunice laughed breathlessly despite herself. "My queen. I love it when you say that."
