I Do NO Own Fairytail, Just Sphinx...
Cana let out a loud satisfied sigh as she laid her empty mug on the table. The first ale was always the sweetest to her, yet even as the familiar and welcome alcohol settled into her stomach there was something going on tonight.
She didn't need to be an aura censoring type to know that there was tension and agitation in the air. After Lucy's she had quickly caught up with Sphinx again. The young female slayer had been packing her bags in her cave, telling her she was going on a mission.
She had her full gear on, mask covering the lower half of her face and jacket to hiding her body. Sure, Sphinx could go on a mission. They were mages after all and that's how they worked. But something was going on here.
Why go on a mission so suddenly?
So the brunette crossed her arms over her chest while leaning on the cave wall. She guessed Sphinx could feel her curiosity because the slayers blue eyes turned to her.
-What mission are you going on?
Sphinx looked away and styed quiet.
-I haven't picked on yet, she said while turning to her backing again.
-Why?
-Because I need to work as well, she sighed before roughly tossing a shirt to her bag.
Cana frowned at her back. There was more than that, she was all over the place, edgy and she paced back and forth not really knowing what she was even looking for. Her normally smooth movements were quickly but somehow almost aggressive.
Sphinx took long missions from weeks to months and she was good. Meaning she got paid pretty well and she shouldn't need to be this absentminded while doing a mission. Cana looked at the bag that was already full and ready to go, before she smirked.
-Well how do you know what to pack if you don't know the mission? There was that's small hint on amusement in her voice and it instantly got a glare from the slayer,
-I'll just find a mission that's goes with my packing, she grunted still glaring her,
-Don't you have anything else to do? She lifted one elegant eyebrow at the now grinning card mage.
-Actually I could think of a lot of things that would be more pleasant than hear you pathetic attempts of avoiding things, Cana said with a laugh,
-Geez Sphinx you used to be so good at lying, a laugh came out while she looked at how her feline friend eyes narrowed at her.
Cana was too late to see the pillow that came at her and hit her face. Sphinx had already turned and grabber her bag before the card mage recovered and jogged after her.
-you do know the guild is in that direction, Cana smirked
-Yes, Sphinx said still walking towards the train station
-And you remember that you said you haven't picked a mission,
-okay what are you? A fucking detective? Sphinx snapped while turning to her intrusive friend.
-Look, the whole 'grumppy-Sphinx' is getting really old. So stop being a sourpuss and come to the Guild, the taps on me,
Sphinx looked around her for something else to throw at her but quickly couldn't do much but to let out a breath. She couldn't be mad at Cana, her annoyance wasn't her fault. Instantly the brunette could feel the tension leave her friend and slung an arm around her shoulders and turned them towards the guild.
-Did you really just use the sourpuss-card on me? Sphinx frowned at her playfully and let the laughing Card mage steer her.
-….-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Cana had no problem in expression her suspicion as she leaned over the table and leveled her friend an expecting look.
Sphinx looked away, almost tempted to ignore her friends questioning look. The raven haired slayer didn't really feel like being at the guild tonight. Actually she didn't feel like being anywhere at the moment. It felt a little hard to breath in this place.
But somehow she still had been dragged in by the determent card mage, Cana way of getting her into stuff was just beyond her.
But sphinx had all intention to drink her share on the card mages tap,
-So the mask, Cana asked flatly,
-Just feel like wearing it, Sphinx quickly answer while looking around her, before hunching down again,
- And why exactly for you feel like wearing that? Usually you're having trouble even wearing a bra? No you're going all cover?
- What going on? I can't help if you don't talk,
Blue eyes look back at her with a slight roll, Cana could hear the small annoyed hiss she let out at her but it had no effect, it only proved that there in fact was something going on.
- I'm not, I just really don't feel like being here, Sphinx mumbled as her knee constantly bouncing up and down restlessly,
- You haven't wore your mask around the guild for a while now, you even openly have your ears on display, so why the need to hide now?
The need to hide? hmm how accurate, that's exactly the feeling she was feeling. Sphinx sighed while lowering her gaze to the table.
-Yeah and look where that has got me? She mumbled under her breath,
Cana made a slow wave with her hand silently asking her to elaborate her problem, giving her full attention to her.
-I'm assuming this has got something to do with those wrinkles around your eyes and that constant need to twitch; the brunet mused while tilting her mug towards her bouncing knee,
Sphinx let out a low sound that was something between a huff and whine but momentarily stopped her leg from bouncing.
Leaning over the table Sphinx mulled on how to start talking. If she didn't feel like this actually bothered Sphinx she would have laughed at her tongue tie.
The sexy minx, who purred people under the table in a blink of an eye sucked at actually having a legit conversation about human feelings.
. Blue eyes would look at her then back at her hands; so Cana decided to help her start.
- So sleepless nights and losing shit from a little banter, Cana stated while watching Sphinx run a hand threw her hair.
- I don't know, alright, she all but hissed in confession,
- Things are happening fast and its really starting to feel like I have no fucking control over anything anymore,
The words came out in a low whine as her body moved from leaning on the table to leaning back at chair, then back to leaning her arms lazily on the table. Her blue eyes held a ounce of steel in them tonight. They seemed a little colder, Cana thought.
She lifted her hand in front of her as looked at it as it didn't even belong to her, Sphinx couldn't feel the uneasiness affect her balance. It worried her slightly because even if she had control over her powers these days it didn't mean that they still couldn't surprise her.
-Yeah nobody ever does, Cana mumbled in her drink trying to not let it get too depressing,
- Is just that, I don't know what's happening, and it really freaking me out,
- I haven't been this emotional and stressed and who knows what ever before, and it suck big time,
Her hand gave a small wave in the air. She paused and looked out into the dark streets through the window,
-So yeah, I have no clue what's up, she said with dry chuckled,
The word fumbled in her head and twisted in her tongue yet she felt the need to give some kind of explanation to Cana only to maybe get even a hint of clarification to her problems, her troubled eyes looked at Cana with an almost mocking sharpness,
- I mean I feel lonely in my own bed; imagine that? Yes Me,
- Who is known to be almost emotionally dysfunctional, Sphinx sighed as her eyes turned towards the window again,
A part of her feel bad almost guilty to even admit these out loud.
Guilty, was mild more like a pathetic wimp, I am losing my touch, She growled bitterly in her mind.
-Well that sound like a bitch, Cana said tying to sound as neutral as possible,
Sphinx didn't think herself as cold or emotionless but she did see herself shrink away from any romantic emotions that made people do crazy thing.
Love wasn't a concept she felt any familiarity with. In fact she almost pitied the fool who ever though she could love, she was a devil slayer; she wasn't someone who could throw caution to the wind.
- It's harder to hide things and be neutral around them, gh, Sphinx admitted with a grunt and started to tap her fingers restlessly against the table.
Ahaa, and the plot thickens, Cana hummed in her drink.
- I'm stronger than ever, I managed to master a whole new fighting combo and I don't feel so bad about even using some of my magic, she exclaimed to her friend while biting her lip.
-But, Cana said knowing the restlessness in her mind might quickly make her sidetrack.
Sensing she needed the encouragement Cana pushed a small shot-glass to her hand and Sphinx drank it quickly, enjoying the alcohols burn down her throat.
-But everything else seems like a roller coaster and I don't really know if I want to be on that ride for much longer. Cana my instincts are acting up,
Cana stayed quiet again just observing how she tapped her finger against the table. Sphinx was stressed there was no denying it.
-I almost feel like going on a very very long mission, just distance myself again, use the mask again,
The card mage loved her wild single horny minx of a friend but she didn't think that Sphinx was looking at this thing in the right angle at the moment.
Commitment and love were like swearwords to her that even when anyone hinted about it the Devil slayer seemed to cringe and look like someone made her eat something very sour.
Actually she had noticed the changes in her behaviors and it made sense that it would freak her out. Cana hadn't brought it up yet but she suspected that Sphinx didn't ever realize how much the men also affected her. It no longer was just her territory,
- So you think running and hiding is the right way, when shit gets real,
The posh voice was not hard to identify and Sphinx groaned while lowering her forehead on the table counter with a pang.
Skeptical but sharp eyes glanced at Cana as the fairy maiden sat down without an invitation. Evergreen laid down her glass and crossed her legs elegantly before clearing her throat.
- What's the matter Sphinx, it's no longer all about the sex? Evergreen smirked.
What sex? I'm having a dry period going that someone could almost mistake me for a damn nun,
Sphinx rolled her eyes at her own thoughts and almost whined at the truth in them.
- Eavesdropping is rude, what do you want ever? Sphinx answered with low annoyed voice.
- Well actually a new couch, new clothes and a new manicure would be nice, she said with a glance towards her perfect nails, before those her stern eyes looked at the hunched over slayer.
- And I want you to grow a spine and stand behind your actions, her hand came to the table counter and her nails drummed on the hard surface.
Sphinx lifted her head and gave the woman a sharp glare. Sphinx didn't see herself as a cowered and really didn't like to hear anyone calming her to be one.
Sphinx was too frustrated to even notice how her nails had sharpened for an instant and the urge to slash had crossed her mind.
However Evergreen didn't even flinch from those blue eyes, she stared back and finally managed to get Sphinx full attention.
- What? She almost snarls underneath her mask. A sound she rarely used towards a fellow guild member,
Huh, no kidding with the short fuse,
Cana sighed before taking a drink from her mug.
- It's not like she impregnated them, so what are you fussing about?
Cana said while noticing how Sphinx was sitting up and crossing her arms to create a barrier around herself, once again a shiver went down her spine from the hardness in her friend blue eyes.
- Shuss Cana, I'm not letting her run, she needs to know this isn't just a game anymore. Bixlow and Laxus is not her pawns she can just toss away when she's done with them,
Wow you have so high thoughts of me fairy queen, Sphinx grumbled in her mind before thinking it over, in a second she was ready counter attack her harsh judgment but something at the back of her mind did realize,
Shit, worst part is that she actually has a point in her stupid rant.
With more calculative manner she thought about her words. Sphinx felt a dread come over her.
She not being a bitch she's just protective over those two, she's just looking out for them.
- Hell, she said sighing, Sphinx felt her inside stir in a bad way,
I like it better when she's being a provoking,
This all really made it seem like I am the bad guy.
Biting her lip Sphinx forced her annoyance down, this moodiness really was rallying her up; Evergreen was trying to annoy her on purpose. Letting out a breath Sphinx let her words sink in. Blue eyes fell to stare at the table counter like it would just tell her all the answers. She needed to contain herself and listen,
But what am I going to do?
But unlike Sphinx who had lost her voice Cana felt obligated to explain how things are to Evergreen. She didn't want anyone thinking that Sphinx was using the guys.
-Sphinx isn't like that Ever, Cana defended,
-She's not playing mind games or manipulation them, she's there just as deep as they are, the card mage said it with such seriousness and even worry that had Sphinx lift her gaze.
- Fuck, do you think she would want to go through all the shit she's had to handle lately? Honestly if it was just about 'flipping the switch'- anymore do you think she's would be here now feeling all messed up.
The brunette had leaned forwards and looked straight at Evergreen making her see the other side of the picture.
The brunette's outburst had Evergreen lift her brows in surprises before thoughtful expression came on.
-Wait, so what really going on? She asked Cana but looked at her taking in her mask and bouncing knee,
-Well Sphinx is not good with emotions and I think she just doesn't know what to do with them. Cana said simply
Sphinx narrowed her eyes at Cana,
pff, I'm perfectly fine with dealing with my feelings, its other feeling and all the other drama that's confusing me,
- Geez, you make it sound so simple when you just lay it out there, Sphinx snorted yet she rolled her eyes,
But it wasn't simple, it wasn't easy; it was the reason she was soon getting a head ache again. Sphinx closed her eyes momentarily, somehow everything felt a little off tonight, like she was on the edge all the time, her skin felt too tight and her normal clothes suffocating.
- So let me get this straight, you're talking about backing away, it's not because you're getting tired but because you're starting to feel emotionally to attached towards them, the fairy mages questioned surprised,
Evergreens whole demur seemed to have changed into a lot less protective but almost thrilled manner. Sphinx looked at her alarmed, she really didn't like how quickly and how easily Evergreen could change her moods and opinions.
- Well this is good; why didn't you say that earlier? Evergreen smiled softly,
- I was ready to go and set your house on fire and probably lock you up somewhere, she continued with a laugh while relaxing once again.
Sphinx and Cana glanced at each other, both of them getting the feeling that Evergreen wasn't just joking about those things.
-So what do you think we should do? Evergreen asked,
- Well, Sphinx sighed,
-I wasn't talking to you hun, Evergreen's eyes looked towards Cana expectantly.
Sphinx was about to question further when Cana actually started to speak.
wait, wait, Sphinx mind started to run as her eyes narrowed at the two who seemed to have forgotten about her,
Again a wave of heat almost that she could call anger washed over her being but with a shake of her head she got quickly rid of it. Sphinx didn't hear what the two kept discussing as she just constrained on holding her composer.
What the hell is wrong with me tonight?
-So basically she doesn't even know what she wants. Evergreen stated,
Cana snorted and chuckled gaining Sphinx's absentminded concentration for a moment,
- Ever, she didn't even know when she's having a 'moment'; with Laxus, do you really think she would know anything about feelings? Cana snorted before taking another drink from her mug with a grin,
- Oi, Sphinx hissed at the brunet,
Evergreen joined in with a few chuckles, while giving Sphinx a soft look before patting the slayer on her shoulder.
-Bixlow is good at making her laugh, Cana blurted thoughtfully.
-but they can't have sex, it would be too much right now, Evergreen said sounding rather strict,
-what kind of a lame ass rule is that, Sphinx groaned instantly,
-yeah, I think that's a little too much, we need to solve this first; Cana sighed completely ignoring the slayers input while leaning over the table once more.
Sphinx's bit the inside of her cheek as the two discussed her life, without even really consulting her. A part of her felt incredibly offended and wanted to roar at them, yet the other part knew that they were actually trying to help and she was just having a bad day.
After they had been tossing ideas around Sphinx finally gained a little more control,
-So she needs to sleep, that's one, Cana said lifting one finger up,
- Yeah definitely, everyone need sleep, so this started like only a few days ago?
Sphinx nodded. It was only a half a lie, she had felt a little puzzled for long time but the affects were getting out of hand,
The surprise feeling turned into shook when they actually started to make sense. Tilting her head she thought how on earth they could somehow break everything into a sensible conversation when it all felt like a scary black cloud in her head.
How they managed to actually get to individual problems and not get overwhelmed with the whole picture,
- Hey Sphinx, yesterday you and Laxus,
-did you feel bad then? Evergeen looked at the masked Sphinx who actually considered her question before answering.
-well, I don't think so, no, realizing it herself almost made her feel a little guilty.
- Is it wrong to say, hell no? Sphinx admitted and Ever chuckled,
Cana and Evergreen once again started to talk with the new facts, Sphinx turned to look outside with a sigh. There was that empty feeling lurking in her gut that had her frowning again. Cana glanced at her friend worriedly; the blue in her eyes wasn't sparkling like they usually would.
- Alright come on, let's go see them,
-huh? Sphinx said looking at the now standing Evergreen,
-Come on we are going up stairs,
Instantly a nervous feeling came over Sphinx who leaned back.
She didn't want to see them now, wait, yes she did, Sphinx felt her stomach make an uncomfortable knot in her gut.
Oh damn the last time she saw Laxus they were having all these stupid 'moments' and all, awkward,
-Why?
-Because hiding from your problems is never going to solve anything.
This time Cana agreed and pushed Sphinx off the stool she was on. Blue eyes looked at her keenly.
-Go, was the only thing she mumble into her drink.
Cana grinned while looking at her friend being dragged by Evergreen. She felt positive over their plan and knew that they had to talk. Through her need to solve Sphinx problems she had only focused that the problems was their love triangle. What Cana hadn't taken to account was that maybe there was something else lurking at that the back, something that was slowly but surely breaking free.
