The drive was silent as we pulled up in the local town and I quickly fell asleep. I woke up to Dean looking at his phone, Sam's number to be exact.
'Do you want to talk about what happened?' I asked Dean softly and he glared at me, putting his phone away.
'Do you want to talk about what Sam said to you back at the asylum?' Dean asked and I clenched my jaw.
'Touché' I muttered as he turned off his car. We jumped out and walked up to a local café called 'Scotty's Café'. There was a man sitting out the front of it.
'Let me guess, Scotty' Dean said
'Yep' Scotty said simply
'Hi, my name's John Bonham and this is Laura Backhouse' Dean introduced and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at Dean's name.
'Isn't that the drummer for Led Zeppelin?' Scotty asked
'Wow. Good. Classic rock fan' Dean said shocked
'What can I do for you, John and Laura?' Scotty asked
'We were wondering if, uh, you've seen these people, by chance' Dean said giving him missing person's pictures of last year's victims.
'Nope. Who are they?' Scotty asked
'Friends of ours. They went missing about a year ago. They passed through somewhere here. We asked around Scottsburg and Salem' I explained
'Sorry. We don't get many strangers around here' Scotty said simply
'Scotty, you got a smile that lights up a room. Anybody ever tell you that?' Dean joked as I rolled my eyes.
'Never mind. See you around' Dean said as we walked off.
'Idiot' I muttered as we split up and walked through the small town, asking people if they had seen them. But I got the same response every time. I found Dean at a shop called 'Jorgeson General Store'.
'You sure they didn't stop for gas or something?' Dean asked as I walked over to him and an old couple.
'Nope, don't remember them. You say they were friends of yours?' The man asked
'That's right' Dean said as a young woman walked down the stairs.
'Did the guy have a tattoo?' She asked
'Yes, he did' I said
'You remember? They were just married' She said to the old man. Dean and I shared a look as the man took another look.
'You're right. They did stop for gas. Weren't here more than 10 minutes' He said
'Do you remember anything else?' Dean asked
'Told them how to get to the interstate, they left town' He explained
'Could you point us in that direction?' I asked
'Sure' He said
…
We jumped back into the car and started driving in the direction the old man had told us to go.
'Something was off about that town, man' I said to Dean
'What do you mean?' Dean asked confused
'I don't know… I just… I just had a bad feeling about them' I muttered before Dean's EMF meter started going off.
'What the hell?' Dean asked as I grabbed it from out the bag in the back seat as Dean pulled over.
'It's off the charts Dean' I said softly as we jumped out of the car and walked through some rows of trees.
'So… about what Sam said…' Dean started to say
'Dean, you don't need to know what he said' I snapped, even though I knew Dean did know.
'Kaylee… I' Dean started to say until I put a hand on his chest to gain his attention. He looked at where I was looking and we saw a scarecrow. We slowly walked over to it.
'That's creepy' I whispered and Dean nodded as we went and looked up at it.
'Dude, you're fugly' Dean joked before I looked at the hook in his hand and then up at his arm.
'What's that on his arm?' I asked before Dean grabbed a ladder and climbed up to get a better look. It was a tattoo that matched the missing man's tattoo.
'Nice tat' Dean said to the scarecrow. He climbed back down and we walked back to the car.
'So what do you think is going on here?' Dean asked me as we jumped in the car.
'I don't know yet. Maybe some sort of sacrifice' I suggested, reading through John's journal for anything helpful.
'Let's go back and talk to them local's. I think they are hiding something' Dean said as he turned the car around and started driving back into town.
'Pretty sure I said that before' I muttered as Dean laughed
….
Dean and I pulled back up outside the local shop where the young girl was standing.
'You're back' She said simply
'Never left' Dean explained
'You still looking for your friends?' She asked
'Mind filling it up there….' Dean said silently asking for her name.
'Emily' She introduced before grinning and filling up Dean's car. I rolled my eyes his flirting. Dean gave me a motion to give them some time alone and I responded by fake gagging and giving him the bird before walking over to Scotty's café and ordered two coffees. I could still hear the conversation though.
'Your girlfriend doesn't seem happy' Emily said
'She isn't my girlfriend, more like my sister' Dean explained and I felt pain shoot through my heart. I swallowed and ignored the pain.
'So did you grow up here?' Dean asked
'Came here when I was 13. I lost my parents. A car accident. My aunt and uncle took me in' Emily explained
'They're nice people' Dean said
'Everybody's nice here' Emily explained
'So, what, it's the, uh, perfect little town?' Dean joked
'Well, you know, it's the boonies, but I love it. I mean, the towns around us… people are losing their homes, their farms. But here, it's almost like we're blessed' Emily explained
'Hey, you been out to the orchard? Seen that… that scarecrow?' Dean asked
'Wow straight to the point' Dean I muttered to myself
'Yeah, it creeps me out' Emily said
'Whose is it?' Dean asked
'I don't know. It's just always been there' Emily explained
'That your aunt and uncles?' Dean asked looking at a red car
'Customer. Had some car troubles' Emily explained
'It's not a couple, is it? A guy and a girl?' Dean asked and Emily nodded.
'Damn' I muttered as I looked around to see a couple sitting in the middle of the café. Dean walked over to me at Scotty's Café and told me about what he discovered. I pointed inside the café to see Scotty giving the couple some free pie.
'Hiya, Scotty. Can I get a coffee, black?' Dean asked
'I've already ordered you one' I said simply
'Oh, thanks' He said grinning
'Oh, and some of that pie too, while you're at it' Dean added to an annoyed Scotty. We sat down at the table next to the couple.
'How you doing? Just passing through?' Dean asked the couple
'Road trip' The woman said
'Yeah, us too' Dean said
'I'm sure these people want to eat in peace' Scotty said rudely to Dean and I.
'Just a little friendly conversation. Oh, and that coffee too, by the way, thanks' I said to Scotty as he glared at us. Dean and I shared an amused look.
'So, what brings you to town?' Dean asked
'We just stopped for gas and, uh, the guy at the gas station saved our lives' The woman said
'Is that right?' I asked kindly
'Yeah. One of our brake lines was leasing. We had no idea. He's fixing it for us' The guy explained
'Nice people' I muttered
'Yeah' The guy said
'So how long until you up and running?' Dean asked
'Sundown' The guy explained
'Really? To fix a brake line? You know, I know a thing or two about cars. I could have you running in an hour. Wouldn't chare you anything' Dean explained
'You know, thanks a lot, but I think we'd rather have a mechanic do it' The girl said
'Sure, yeah. You know, it's just that these roads, um, they're not real safe at night' I said, trying a different approach.
'I'm sorry?' She asked
'I know it sounds strange, but, uh, you might be in danger' I said softly
'We're trying to eat, okay?' The guy asked firmly
'Yeah. You know, my brother could give you this puppy-dog look… and you'd just buy right into it' Dean muttered as I rolled my eyes.
'Idiot' I muttered as The Sheriff walked in.
'Thanks for coming, Sheriff' Scotty said before whispering something in his ear. Dean and I shared a look before they walked over to us
'Like a word, please' The Sheriff said firmly
'Come on. I'm having a bad day already' Dean muttered
'You don't want to make it worse' The sheriff said leaning onto our table.
'Are you threatening us?' I growled angrily before Dean placed a hand on my arm, calming me down.
'We will go' Dean said as we got in our car and the police followed us to the edge of town.
'Great. Now what?' Dean asked me annoyed as he slammed his head on a wheel.
'We wait until sundown' I said simply
Dean and I took turns getting some sleep before the sun went down.
'Dean' I said waking his up as darkness took over.
'It's time' I said simply as he woke up looking around confused. He started the car and we drove back towards the orchard. We found the couple's car and I could hear them running.
'Let's go! Now!' I yelled as Dean grabbed his shot gun and ran through the trees until we found the couple.
'Get back to your car' Dean said firmly as we saw the scarecrow walking towards us.
'Now!' I yelled at them as Dean shot the scarecrow. It didn't even slow him down.
'Go Dean!' I shouted as we ran towards the cars and out of the orchard.
'What? What the hell was that?' The guy asked as they hid before Dean and I.
'Don't ask' I said simply as we realized the scarecrow was gone.
