Chapter 48: Distractions will ruin the music

The moment Gintoki and Kagura were under the small door to the rooftop, Gintoki pushed it open. He placed his palms on the roof, and pushed himself out of the doorway. As soon as both his feet were on the roof, Kagura followed suit. Gintoki grasped the Yato's wrist, and pulled her up. Kagura closed the small door.

Kagura was lucky that it was nearly dark out; otherwise she would've run back to the dressing room, and grab her parasol. The very last thing she wanted was the sunrays hitting her skin.

Gintoki mumbled as he scratched his scalp, "I can't believe I have to be on this roof for three freaking hours."

"We can play some games while we're here, uh-huh," Kagura insisted.

"Like what?" He arched a silver brow up. "There's not really much to do here, other than looking out for those cloaked weirdos. Hell, they're probably on their way now."

The redhead rolled her eyes, "We can play rock-paper-scissors, uh-huh."

"Rock-paper-scissors?" He repeated as he felt the corners of his lips tug down to the rooftop.

"Yeah. Each time either of us wins a round of rock-paper-scissors, we'll punch one another in the gut, uh-huh. For example, if I win a round, I get to punch your hip."

Her explanation only caused Gintoki's frown to deepen. What kind of game of rock-paper-scissors was this? Kagura obviously wasn't going to kill Gintoki – since they had a father-daughter relationship – but why would she want to punch Gintoki? If Kagura wasn't a Yato, Gintoki would just say 'whatever', because a child at Kagura's age wouldn't exactly hurt an adult just by punching them. Well, maybe it would hurt a little, but that wasn't the point here.

"Kagura-" Gintoki wanted to convince the girl to not play this game, but Kagura interrupted him before he could continue.

"The only answer I'll accept is yes." She sounded dead-serious when she said that.

The man scowled at her, but eventually gave up by releasing a sigh, "Alright, fine, I'll play this stupid game, but we're only doing five rounds, okay?"

Though Kagura was disappointed by how many rounds of rock-paper-scissors Gintoki would only do, she was just glad that they would play the game at all. After all, she wanted to do something that would kill her boredom. Kagura didn't want to just stand on the rooftop, looking for the cloaked men. No, no, that would be way too boring. In fact, she'd probably take a nap on the roof while on the lookout.

"Very well, then," Kagura replied after a moment of silence. "Five rounds, it is."

Gintoki sighed, but wasn't exactly relieved, because if he lost a round, then Kagura would punch him. There would be no doubt that it would be extremely painful.

He and Kagura lifted up their fists, and Gintoki muttered under his breath, "Rock-paper-scissors."

Gintoki held scissors, and Kagura held rock. Gintoki's lips parted, realizing that Kagura won the first round. He was beyond happy.

An evil smirk plastered onto Kagura's features; without warning, she clenched her fist, and punched Gintoki in the stomach. The samurai snapped his eyes wide as he coughed loudly. Gintoki took a few steps back, but made sure he wasn't close to the edge. He was lucky that he didn't eat much today, because otherwise he would be throwing up.

Saliva trailed down his chin, though he wiped it with his mouth. A few beads of sweat formed on his forehead as Kagura announced, "I win the first round, yep!"

The man groaned, but managed to stand up straight. He sputtered, "Why did I agree to this stupid game?!" He shook his head, and said a little louder, "Okay…next round."

Once again, they raised their fists, and when Gintoki said those three words a second time, he held scissors again, but this time, Kagura held paper.

Gintoki felt his lips curving up into a grin. He wasn't going to hurt Kagura, though. Gintoki would never harm her.

He was about to slap the back of her head, but shockingly, Kagura dodged it, and head-butted him in the stomach.

"GAUGH!" Gintoki grunted, feeling flabbergasted by her actions. He fell on the roof, and sneered at the Yato, "You can't do that! That's cheating!"

"I can do whatever I want, uh-huh!" Kagura retorted.

"This is not how rock-paper-scissors work!" He snarled.

Although he was pissed at Kagura for cheating, they played another three rounds of rock-paper-scissors.

Meanwhile…

Sean found a pair of earplugs in his pants pocket. He inserted them in his ears, blocking out the god-awful music coming from none other than Terakado Tsu. Sean didn't expect Tsu to sound that good, but the lyrics of her songs were just…ugh. Sean thought calling her music "bad" was an understatement. Her music, in Sean's opinion, was preposterous. Sure, he had heard some weird-ass lyrics to most rap music in his world, but Tsu's music was somehow worse than rap.

Another reason why Sean decided to wear the earplugs was because the concert was too loud. His ears weren't too sensitive to loud noises, but he preferred quiet places. So he'd never been to a concert in his entire life…until this one, though perhaps it didn't count, because he was "working" as a security guard for the night.

Sean sighed before deciding to find an empty seat, and read his book. He was very aware that he was supposed to be looking out for the three intruders, but the brunette began to think that maybe they weren't coming here tonight. Maybe they decided to stay at home, and watch anime all night while hugging their pillows to their chests. Perhaps they figured that ruining Tsu's concert one time was enough; doing it a second time would be boring and repetitive.

That made perfect sense.

The 19-year-old man walked up the stairs, trying to find a seat. His emerald eyes peered up, spotting a row of unused seats in the back. Why were those seats empty? Were people ignoring them? Whatever the reason was, Sean didn't quite care, really. In fact, he was pretty glad they were empty. That way, people wouldn't be pushing him around while he was reading.

He held a small smile as he headed straight for the back row. Soon, Sean sat down in one of the seats, and pulled out his book from behind his bulletproof vest. Sean chose to put it behind his vest instead of the top of his pants, because the pants he was wearing was a little tighter than his kimono pants.

He crossed his legs, and opened his book before reading it to himself. Sean could still hear people cheering on the pop singer, but thanks to the earplugs, all the sounds were practically muffled. So Sean was able to concentrate on his book, "Coral Underworlds".

Occasionally, Sean would look up at the stage, seeing Tsu sing. A huge smile was stuck on her face; it was obvious enough that she was enjoying herself. How could she not be? Tsu danced side to side while holding the green microphone to her mouth.

Sean snorted in amusement, and went back to his book.

Tsu's song had just finished. The whole audience, including Shinpachi's fan club, cheered; some people even whistled at her performance.

Sean paid no mind to Tsu or the audience. He was apparently in his own little world of reading. Sometimes Sean dreamt that he was in a world where he would find thousands of books to read; his little world would also be the quietest place on the face of the planet. That was a good thing, too, since he liked quiet places over noisy places. Boring his irises onto the thin pages, he rested his chin in his palm.

Just as he absentmindedly turned the page, he could've sworn he heard someone calling him "bro". But the only person who'd call him that was…

"Bro!" The muffled voice forced Sean to snap back into reality. He blinked multiple times as he rotated his head to the side, only to see his confused-looking sister.

Christine furrowed a brow as she slightly tilted her head to the side. She was asking him something, but due to the earplugs, he couldn't understand a word she just said.

He pointed at one of the earplugs, silently telling her that he couldn't hear her. The teen rolled her eyes, and without alarming him, she grabbed his wrist, forcing him to stand up. Sean closed his book as he and Christine walked out of the concert, and into the large hallway.

The moment they went in the hallway, Sean pulled out his earplugs. Christine asked him with crossed arms, "I was asking why you were reading your book."

"Oh," Sean narrowed his eyes.

Christine sighed, "You're supposed to be on the lookout, just like Gintoki, Kagura, and I." A snort of dry humor escaped her lips; she added in a murmur, "And I thought you were smarter than I was."

"Hey, don't start being a smart-butt," He warned with a snarl.

"You mean a smartass?"

Now it was his turn to roll his eyes. "Christine, you know I don't like to curse." He sighed almost inaudibly. "Anyway, we are on the lookout, but I have a feeling that those guys aren't going to be here tonight."

"What makes you think that?" She laughed.

Sean glared at her for laughing, but he responded, "Well, perhaps they decided that it would be too old to ruin Otsu's future concerts."

"Bro," Christine rested a hand on his shoulder, "you never know what's going to happen." She then held her own chin, and continued, "Maybe it won't just be those bystanders who're coming. Maybe they're bringing their dads, because their wives left them; their dads are probably going to be here to steal women's bras."

Suddenly, a background of a middle-aged fat guy, who was smiling and blushing while holding a peach-colored bra, appeared behind Christine.

Sean exclaimed, "You're off the subject here! And where the heck did this background come from?! It just appeared out of nowhere!"

Christine turned around, seeing the background. She muttered, "You know, I don't know…" She waved her arms around, getting rid of the background as if it was smoke. The background eventually disappeared.

"But anyway," Christine began, "you have to be on the lookout as well. Otherwise you'll look like you're being lazy."

"I'm not lazy," He scowled.

"Then do your job."

"Don't start copping an attitude," He warned her once again.

"Let's get back to patrolling," She insisted, ignoring what he just said.

Sean groaned quietly as he thought, She hates being ignored, yet she ignored my warning? She's being a freaking hypocrite!

The siblings went back inside the concert. Sean didn't go back to reading his book, though he put the earplugs in his ears again. He set the book behind his vest.

They realized that Tsu's second song had finished. Tsu announced, "Everyone! There will be an intermission for about 15 minutes!"

"An intermission?" Christine questioned. "She's only played two freaking songs."

The curtain at the stage was down. When the intermission had started, people from the crowd chatted to each other; most of them commented on how awesome Tsu was, despite her inappropriate music.

Shinpachi told his club members, "I'm going to the bathroom. I'll be back."

He walked up the stairs, passing the siblings.

Sean held a crooked smile as he murmured, "How exactly does he tolerate Otsu's music?"

"Beats me," Christine shrugged.

On the rooftop…

Gintoki and Kagura finally finished playing rock-paper-scissors. Gintoki only won two out of five rounds. But whether or not he won, Kagura punched him in the gut and hip; it hurt like hell. Gintoki was certain he would have to go see a doctor when the concert was over. It actually reminded him of the time where Shinpachi and Christine kicked him very hard, which made him go to Edo hospital to see if he had any broken bones. He also remembered bringing Sean along, who was trying to get away from him, since he was horrified of hospitals in general.

Now Gintoki really thought his bones (Mostly in his hip) were broken. Even about ten minutes after they had finished their game, Gintoki could still feel excruciating pain. Though he tried ignoring it, he knew it was pointless to ignore the pain, because it was starting to get unbearable.

The man stared at Kagura, and asked, "Kagura…are you sure you didn't break my bones?"

"I've never broken your bones, so they're not shattered, nope," Kagura replied without glancing at him.

Gintoki looked skeptical. Should he even believe her? Kagura was no doctor, so why would he?

He pointed out, "But you punched me no less than three times! I'm fairly certain that at least some of my bones have shattered to pieces!" The man stomped towards the door, and decided, "I'm going to get the medic, and see if any of my bones are damaged!"

With that being said, Gintoki opened the roof door, and stepped onto the first step of the ladder. He climbed down the ladder, leaving Kagura all alone on the rooftop. It wasn't like Kagura cared, though. She knew Gintoki would return very shortly.

With nothing else to do, Kagura chose to walk to the edge of the building. As soon as she was at the edge, she slowly sat down, and kicked her legs up. She rested her hands on the roof while looking at the dozens of people walking through the street. The redheaded Yato slowly smirked, and uttered a bit wickedly, "You people looks like ants, uh-huh." Kagura laughed at her own comment as if it was the funniest thing she had ever said. Of course, the "you look like an ant from up here" comment was overused.

Kagura felt the wind hitting against her back. Goosebumps started to form on her skin; the girl frowned, feeling a bit chilly from the cold. She was beginning to question why Ichi assigned her and Gintoki to patrol the rooftop. Yes, Ichi told them to watch out for the intruders, but she could've at least warned them that it was going to be cold. Then again, it was warmer earlier, plus it would always get a bit cold as it got darker, so…yeah.

She rubbed her arms as if it would warm her up. It barely helped.

Where the hell was Gintoki? He said he was going to find the medic, and see if his bones were actually crushed, so he should've been back by now. What was taking him so long?

Kagura grumbled, "Where's Gin-chan? I think I should go find him, uh-huh."

She turned around, kneeling on the roof. Crawling away from the edge, Kagura stood up, and wiped her gloved hands on her pants. She headed for the small door, and the moment she stepped beside it, Kagura crouched down, opening the door. Stepping onto the top of the ladder, Kagura held the door up, supporting it so that it wouldn't accidentally hit her head.

While she was going down the ladder, she slowly closed the door above her head. Kagura was supposed to stay on the rooftop, looking out for those cloaked bastards, but apparently, she didn't care at this point.

Soon, she reached the end of the ladder. After setting her feet on the floor, Kagura looked around, but didn't see the silver-haired idiot. She puffed her cheeks up, and started running through the backstage.

But because nobody was on the rooftop, there was a great chance that the intruders would arrive, and ruin Tsu's concert again.

With Christine and Sean…

Since the concert felt stuffy, the siblings decided to each get a drink. Christine got a can of sprite, and Sean got a bottle of orange juice.

Each sibling took a sip of their drinks. Sean exhaled heavily before whispering to himself, "Ah, that's delicious."

Christine snorted quietly, "You just took the words out of my mouth."

All of a sudden, they could hear Gintoki's voice.

"Dammit…the medic said I don't have any broken bones, yet I'm still in agonizing pain…" He complained, feeling his hip.

They peered at the man; Sean frowned, "Gintoki-san, aren't you supposed to be on the roof?"

"Yes, but Kagura and I played five rounds of rock-paper-scissors," Gintoki groaned.

"And…?" Sean cocked a brow up.

"And Kagura punched me throughout the game. So I went to the medic to see if my bones were shattered, but he said that I was fine."

"Kagura punched you?" Christine questioned. "If she punched you, then your bones would've been broken already, since, you know, Kagura-chan's a Yato."

Gintoki snorted, "My bones are tough, thanks to strawberry milk."

Just then, Kagura appeared. As soon as she ran in front of the trio, she pointed at Gintoki, and exclaimed, "There you are, Gin-chan! I wondered what was taking you so long, uh-huh!"

Gintoki, Christine, and Sean's jaw dropped in shock, seeing her when she was supposed to be on the rooftop.

Sean began to shout as a vein popped in his cheek, "Kagura-chan, why're you here?! You're supposed to stay on the roof!"

Christine also shouted, "Now the concert will be ruined again!"

Rolling her eyes, Kagura assured, "Calm down. When those assholes get here, I'm gonna beat their asses up, and throw them in the garbage bin, uh-huh."

"You know, that sounds like a good idea," Christine held her chin.

Sean sighed while shaking his head, "We're not going to throw them in the garbage bin. We'll just call the Shinsengumi, and then have the bystanders arrested."

"I actually like Kagura's idea better," Gintoki admitted.

Sean cried, "Oh, come on! I seriously can't be the only one who's against Kagura-chan's idea!"

"Your idea's lame, grumpy," Kagura said flatly.

"Grrr…" Sean growled as he started gripping his hair.

Shinpachi walked out of the concert, and smiled, "Her songs are so amazing." He spotted his friends out of the corner of his eye.

But when he saw Gintoki and Kagura, he immediately exclaimed, "Gin-san! Kagura-chan! What're you doing here?! Both of you need to be on the roof! Do you want those bastards to destroy Otsu-chan's concert?!"

"I honestly thought Kagura was still on the roof," Gintoki responded.

"Both of you get back to the roof right now!" Shinpachi ordered, feeling infuriated.

Gintoki rolled his eyes, "Fine, fine." He glanced at Kagura, telling her, "Come on, Kagura."

He headed back to the roof, with Kagura following him.

Shinpachi sighed angrily, "I just hope they haven't arrived here yet."

Christine informed the taller teenager, "Shinpachi-san, Kagura-chan decided that if the intruders do decide on ruining Otsu's performance, then she'll throw them into the garbage bin."

He frowned, "We're just going to have the Shinsengumi arrest them."

A weak smile crept up Sean's face. He knelt on the floor before grasping Shinpachi's Otsu Fan Club uniform. Shinpachi widened his eyes at his action as Sean whimpered, "Shinpachi-san…I feel like you're the only person who understands me."

"Wait, what?" Shinpachi felt bamboozled.

Sean clarified, "I said the same thing to my sister, Gintoki, and Kagura, but they all dissed my suggestion." He cried waterfalls, and sobbed, "Why am I so lonely?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Shojaro-san! You need to calm down!" Shinpachi insisted as a drop of sweat trickled down his cheek.

"I am calm," Sean weakly replied.

"Bro, you don't look calm," Christine pointed out. "You can't really be calm if you're bawling your eyes out."

Sean stood up, and decided, "Excuse me; I need to use the bathroom." He walked away from the teens, practically sulking.

Shinpachi gave the brunette a sympathetic expression while Christine murmured, "Maybe I should comfort him." She shrugged her shoulders, and without another moment to spare, she charged towards her older brother.

Back on the rooftop…

"Kagura, I can't believe you left the roof while I was looking for the medic! You should've stayed here!" Gintoki chided.

"I thought you didn't care about the concert being ruined," Kagura replied.

Gintoki just shrugged.

Suddenly, they heard somebody snicker, "You two get inside while I distract them."

Kagura's ear twitched; she and Gintoki swiftly turned around, only to see three men, wearing black clothing, and masks. They were opening the roof door. Gintoki and Kagura didn't have to guess who they were.

They were the three motherfucking intruders!

Kagura pointed at the trio, and yelled, "You!"

"GAH! They spotted us!" Intruder #1 yelped. He turned to his buddies, and commanded, "Quick! Get inside before they catch us!"

Panicking, the men hurriedly climbed down the ladder. Kagura snarled, "Oh, no you don't!" She darted towards them; one of the bystanders had already closed the door, but Kagura opened it again. She accidentally tore the door off of the hinges, but she didn't have any time to worry about that.

Kagura threw the broken door in a random direction. Seconds later, the door hit a random woman in the head, causing the woman to fall to the ground unconsciously.

The bystanders reached the end of the ladder. Instead of climbing down as well, Kagura jumped, and hit the floor in a split second. Gintoki would've jumped as well, but he was in enough pain, so he decided to use the ladder. Kagura ran after the men, screaming, "YOU'RE NOT GETTING AWAY WITH THIS, NOPE!"

She wanted to get those witnesses before they caused any damage to Tsu's concert.

Uh-oh, Tsu's concert is in trouble! :O Do you think the bystanders will get caught? And will Gintoki's pain go away soon? Wait, the latter isn't very important (Since Gintoki's bones aren't really broken). LOL

My answer from the previous question: I have way too many favorite singers/DJ's. If I were to list them down, the list would no doubt be endless. XD

Question of the update: What're you afraid of?

Hope you enjoyed chapter 48! :)
