Chapter 51 – A New Dream
Gabby smiled as she glanced back in the rear view vision mirror of her car, Alya was babbling away as she always did when they got in the car, something she had loved to do since the minute she could actually get the sounds out of her mouth, Gabby wouldn't be surprised if she started to talk soon the way she was going. They were on their way to the firehouse, James was spending the night after being dropped off from school by a friend but there was another reason that gabby wanted to go, something s little more special than just to see her son and fiancé.
As they drove, Gabby thought back to the last few months and how so much had actually happened, she had even started to plan her wedding, which for her was a huge step; it made it more real, they were finally doing it.
It was only a couple of days after Gabby realised that she couldn't find her ring that matt found her in their bedroom, their draws open and clothes sitting on the ground, he could hear her huff from in the hall, "Baby what's wrong?" She jumped and turned to him, not expecting him to be there, let alone come and find her. He had taken James to Antonio's to play with the kids, Alya had been sick and crying more than usually so they felt it best if they give James a chance to have some fun.
"Oh hey, nothing's wrong. I was just looking for something that's all." She still hadn't told him she couldn't find the ring, she was still feeing out this she couldn't find it. She gave him a smile, hoping that he would believe that nothing was wrong, before turning back to the clothes on the bed, pretending to fold them again and place them back into the draws.
Matts brow furrowed, he was confused as to why she was acting the as she was but felt that he should just let her go, if there was something seriously wrong, she would tell him. "Oh ok. Need any help?" Whatever was bothering her, he wanted to give her a chance to relax a little do helping her out might give her that chance.
But with her back to matt she shook her head, "No it's alright, go spend some time with Alya, you have been at work all yesterday and she misses you." Once again Gabby smiled over her shoulder, watching as he nodded, placing a kiss to her forehead before heading to Alya's room, hearing her babbling away after waking up from her sleep.
Gabby sighed deeply, if she couldn't find her ring today she would tell him, she had to tell him. She really had looked everywhere, even calling shay to ask if she remembered where she had it last, she had taken it off when she washed Alya, the little girl loved to pull at her ring and Gabby was worried that she would pull it off and so she had left it on her dresser but now it was gone. How the hell could a ring go missing!
Deciding that she would tell Matt that night, after dinner when they were alone in bed, Gabby slowly moved from the bedroom to the living room, finding Matt and Alya on the ground, the little girl laying all over her father, giggling when she pulled his hair or squashed his nose with her hands. She just sat back, earning a Casey grin from Alya before she went back to making fun of her father, even before she could talk.
"Come on kid, we gotta go, dad is making dinner!" Gabby called out from the living room of her brothers home, hearing three eyes of thumping feet coming down the corridor before sliding to stop in front of gabby, almost running saint into her, James had been at Antonio's house for almost 6 hours, playing with Eva no Diego, something that he didn't always get the chance to do anymore and so made the most o the chances he got.
"Have fun?" She followed James to the car, listening to all the stories of the tour let they had gotten into while there, no doubt giving Antonio a hard time, but they were good kids, they didn't cause too much trouble for him.
"Dad!" James called out as gabby opened the front door for him as they got home, running straight to Alya who was in her playpen, calling out her typical 'aim' sound when she say James coming or wanted him. They had decided that she was calling him recently because she would only do it when he was around to when he wasn't and then turned up she would stop, smile at him and do it once more.
"Over here kiddo!" Matt moved from the dinning room to the living room, pulling Gabby into his arms instantly, giving her a deep kiss that set a fire alight in her belly, his tongue running along her bottom lip before pulling away, leaving her standing with her eyes closed and her body shivering, oh how she hated when he did that to her. "Come on, dinner is ready." He lifted Alya from her playpen and moved her to he dinning room where her high chair was, her high pitched squeal echoing through the room, her high chair meant food and that kid was a machine when eating.
Matt smirked to himself when he realised that Gabby hadn't come straight away, she was still in the living room trying to right herself before she come into the dinning room. Matt looked down at the smiling James, who had taken his seat at the table, waiting patiently, Matt moving away from the table and back to the stove when he heard gabby coming.
"So what's for dinner?" Gabby voice entered the dinning room but stopped short when she looked at the table in front of her, there was nothing special about it, nothing that screamed romantic but it was romantic to her. On one side of the table sat her eldest son James, smiling widely, the other her almost one-year-old daughter, who was smiling through the pasta that was being shoved into her mouth with her own chubby hands.
And in front of her stood Matt, dressed normally, jean's and the blue t-shirt she loved to see him in but there was a look in his eyes that held so much more than most other days, fun, excitement, love and hope.
And then sitting on her plate, sitting in the middle of her flat dinner plate was their ring, staring back at her, sparkling in the lights. Her eyes rose from her plate to Matt who raised his eyebrows at her, daring her to pick it up. There was silence for a moment as she lifted the ring and placed it onto her finger but then he spoke, "So I know this makes it question number three but will you marry me Gabby?" He was now standing in front of her, she had no idea when he had made his was to her side but now her hands were in his, holding her gently.
The smile fell from Gabby's face as she glanced down at her red faced son, the little shit had taken her ring when she and taken it off an giving it to matt. And the big shit had made her thing she had lost it, causing her stress and grief over the last few days that could have been avoided.
She pulled him into a deep kiss suddenly, her hand brushing against his groin, causing him to shudder against her, knowing she was doing it in a away that James could not see and it was pay back for the kiss he had left her with moments ago but also for the stress she had been under the last few days. "I hate you." She whispered against his lips, causing him to laugh and nod, "Yeah I know"
Gabby was pulled from her thoughts when she replied she was at the firehouse already, Alya clapping and calling out from the backseat when she realised where she was, she recognised the firehouse, the trucks she loved but this was where daddy was and she knew that, "Come on, let's go and surprise daddy huh?" She lifted Alya from the backseat, walking her inside, thankful she had called shay early, this surprise wouldn't happen if she hadn't.
She slowly pushed open the double door to the common room, smiling silent at everyone else as they saw her, clearly shay had told them of the plan. Shay was standing by the kitchen with matt, his back to gabby who knew this was the time, she slowly placed Alya on the ground, on her feat and the little one look round for a minute, this was different, before she looked at her mother, who just pointed Into the distance towards matt, Alya's eyes widening when she saw Matt.
And just like that, one little foot in front of the other, Alya waddled over to her father's side, wide eyes and silent gasps coming from everyone in the common room. They watched as Alya made her way to matts side, hitting his leg his her hands, amusing herself and causing him to jump in shock as he didn't know she was there. "Monster! What are you doing here?" He laughed, so happy to see her because he missed her.
Alya giggle and tapped her hands against his face, laughing when he kissed her neck but then She turned in his arms, wanting to go back to her mum, Matt's eyes shining with love, as he looked over at Gabby. He played Alya on the ground, expecting her to crawl her way over but the minute he put her down on her hands and knees she turned to look at her dad with a 'are you kidding me?' Look before pushing herself onto her hands and feet and waddling the short distance back to her mother.
This time cheers and claps echoed in the common room, Alya had been taking her first steps all day at home but that was the furthest she had walked, Gabby was proud of her daughter. Lifting her into her arms, gabby glanced over at Matt whose looked was one of shock and awe, his mouth open slightly and eyes wide with realisation. "She had been doing it all morning and I wanted to surprise you..."
Matt made his way over to Gabby silently, taking Alya in his arms and hugging her tightly, he still hadn't said a word. Up until the last few days she had even looked interested in taking her first steps but now she was walking to him from across the room. This was what he wanted, his dreams of experiencing all of the wondering of being a father were finally coming true.
The spray of the water came down comfortably on them both, covering them both, but that was until Matt turned Gabby around, her back to his chest, his lips at her neck and his want for her more than evident. Gabby reached around her back, taking him in her hand causing him to let out a deep hiss of pleasure, nudging her forward, her forearms resting against the cool tiled wall.
It didn't take long before Matt slipped into her, a gasp slipping from her lips as he did, the water and her desire for him making it easy. Letting out a sigh, Gabby pressed her hips back into his, bringing him to the hilt inside of her, "Oh god Matt." She sighed out, hearing him groan, his hands going to her hips, holding onto her as he started to move his hips.
Matt ran his hand down Gabby's spine, feeling her shudder at his touch, tightening around him as a reaction, "Jesus…" slipping from his lips at the same time.
Their movements started out as slow, taking their time as it had been a while since they had a chance to be together, life getting in their way, but with each movement Gabby made to lean back into Matt, his speed increasing, his grip on her hips tightening, a groan coming from lips as he pressed further into her, the coil inside of her stomach tightening with pleasure. Her hands started to shake, struggling to hold herself up against the wall, feeling him inside of her was enough to set her off.
"Matt please…" she panted out, wanting him to give the ending she wanted, needed, wanting to give him everything too. Matt groaned, hearing her beg for him set him over the edge, his movements speeding up, slipping in and out of her with increased speed, bringing himself almost out of her before slamming straight back in, a cry escaping from her lips, her body tightening around him again, coming around him, feeling him shudder around her.
Matt couldn't hold back for much longer, he didn't want to hold back, leaning over, he brought his chest to her back, his lips attaching onto her neck once more, his hips still moved, his pace erratic, a groan leaving his lips as he came inside of her, a heavy sigh coming from his lips, "Oh god baby…" following as his hips slowly, staying inside of her, holding her close.
"Oh Matt," Gabby felt her legs shake under her, struggling to hold her up. They stayed bent over, Matt holding onto her tightly, not wanting to let her go as he placed a kiss on her back, running kisses up her spine before placing one on her cheek, "I love you Matt." She whispered over the water, feeling him laugh into her ear, "I love you too Gabby."
Gabby stood silently in the field; the air had turned cooler, the cooler months starting to set in, however when the sun was out it was still warm. "Hey mum, dad. I know it's been a while since I've been here, it's just been so crazy but think about you every day." Gabby adjusted Alya on her hip, the little girl cooing in her ear, Gabby's change of emotion affecting her, the usually active little girl now curled into her mothers side. "I miss you both so much...so much has changed since I came here last." It was true, the last time she had made it to her parent's grave was just after she arrived back in Chicago, realising that it s close to 3 years since that had happened.
"I mean, I'm getting married soon and I had this one. You guys would have loved Matt! He is amazing with James and me, he has given me so much. And James has grown up so much! I wish you could have met him. I really wanted you to here for me to celebrate but I know that you will always be in my heart, all the time." She had been thinking of her parents more and more recently, especially after Alya was born, but it still hurt her so much that they couldn't be there with her to celebrate the things that happened in her life.
"Can you believe Alya is turning one today?" Matt whispered as they lay naked in each other's arms, their body heat keeping the other one warm. They had organised a party of Alya, nothing overly huge just family and friends for lunch.
Gabby rolled over onto Matt's chest, kissing him gently on the breastbone. "I know. It's crazy how much things have changed. I never thought I would have had another baby or even found someone I love so much and loves me too." She brushed her hand against his cheek, smiling when he nodded, "I don't want to wait forever to get married, I want it to be family and friends, just a fun day..." She had been thinking about it since he asked her for the third time to marry him.
"I was thinking we could have it here, something small, do up the backyard and the gazebo with flowers and lights..."
Truthful when Matt had built it in their backyard, he had had the same thought, he imagined Gabby walking towards him as he stood under the entrance to the gazebo, their family around them. "You know, I think that is pretty much perfect. I don't want to wait forever either." He leaned down and kissed her, rolling her into her back, his need for her coming right back again. But that was before there was a loud knock at their bedroom door.
Too caught up in each other, the chose to ignore it, hoping James would think they were still asleep, matt ran his lips down gabby neck, feeling her grip on his upper arm tighten but James tired again, knocking loudly but adding, "You know I love Alya but I don't want another baby in the house!" Gabby groaned at her son, he was a smart kid, but that was annoying, "Alya has been awake for almost 20 minutes, I think she wants you guys now!"
They heard him walking away, a small laugh telling them he had heard their groans when he spoke, "That kid of yours-" Matt smirked as he kissed her again, both a little embarrassed at what James had said but neither really bothered by it, he was 12 years old and a very bright kid, they just made sure that he was told correct information.
Gabby raised her eyebrow at him, pushing him off as she laughed, "Hey he gets that sass from you too you know...we aren't going to have much luck with him, between being relate to me and hanging around with you, Chris was a real smart ass too, always ribbing people when he could." It wasn't uncommon for Matt and Gabby to talk about Chris when it came to James, in fact matt encouraged it. He didn't want to act as though he was taking Chris's place, he didn't want James to forget the little he did remember of his real father, so may enjoyed hearing about him.
"That's true, we will just have to keep him away from Sev if we want him to be a nice kid and not a ladies man." He laughed as he watched gabby stand, her body on full display for him to see. "God I love you..." He whispered as she moved around the Eros dressing.
Leaning over her side of the bed to meet matt, she kissed him, "I love you too..." Before she left the room, calling out to her daughter who started to coo when she heard her mother's voice.
"Can you believe this is finally happening? I mean, when you told me you and matt were engaged more than a year ago, I thought that we would have been here by now but then this one came along and it was like everything went out the window." Shay called out from the hallway, after hearing Alya calling got attention she had gone to pick her up before walking back towards the bedroom where gabby was with Laura.
Today was Gabby and Matt's wedding day. It had all been planned for 6 months from the time they had talked quickly while in their room, both agreeing on something small and intimate. They had invited those from the firehouse and the intelligence unit, as they had gotten quite close to them when spending time at Molly's, as well as Christie and Violet.
"Yeah I know but I'm glad we waited until after she was born, I wouldn't want to not have her here today." Gabby spoke as she heard Shay coming, turning slowly when she noticed her coming from the doorway, smiling when she noticed Shay's smiling face. Gabby was nervous, it was true their wedding was organised in only 6 months but she had seen this dress back when Matt had first asked her to marry him and everyday she had driven passed the shot on her way to taking James to school and had seen it in the window.
But no one else had seen it…until now.
"Oh Gabby…" Shay was speechless, as she looked back at her best friend, her beautiful flowing dress was simple yet elegant. The top was knotted with material in the middle that followed the contours of her chest, with a simple lacy pattern underneath. It was beautiful, it fitted in well with the garden theme and she knew that Matt would just love her in the dress.
Gabby blushed as both Shay and Laura stared back at her, her make up light and her hair just pinned back in curls, a small crystallised headband in her hair, she looked stunning. "I hope you like it…I mean, I saw this before Alya was born so I was worried I wouldn't fit into it anymore…" She spoke softly, she had been really worried that she wouldn't have fit into the dress after still not losing all her baby weight but she had tried it on once and it had fit almost perfect, only a few adjustments and it was right for her.
"I told you it would be fine, I promise you look amazing and Matt is going to be speechless when he sees you…now we should get going, everyone should already be there." Laura started to move Gabby towards the door, their wedding was fairly low-key and simple, even the bridesmaid dressers were a simple green strapless dresses, both Laura and Shay were her maids.
Sitting in the car on the way back to her home, Gabby sighed, her fingers playing Alya who sat with Shay, as they knew the little girl would become fascinated with Gabby's dress and try to pull on the material, "You know, I really never thought my life would change this much coming back to Chicago. I mean…Alya, yes is a big change, but meeting Matt…I never could have thought it would happen." It was true, Gabby never thought she would ever meet anyone as amazing as Matt, who had changed her life, been there for her and had taken in James as his own, she never even thought that person existed, until she met him.
Kelly watched Matt as he sat on the rocking chair in Alya's room doing up his shoe laces, he was dressed in a simple black suit, white shirt open at the collar and no tie. They were keeping thing simple after all. "Everyone is here, getting seated…the backyard looks amazing…" He had spent the last couple of days helping Matt clean up the backyard, put out the chairs out, hang the fairy lights from one fence to the other, creating a soft ceiling. They had also dressed the gazebo in flowers and fairy lights. It was perfect; Matt just hoped that Gabby would like it, as she hadn't seen it yet.
Matt had spent a bit of time in Alya's room over the last few days that Gabby hadn't been staying there, both agreeing that they should spend a bit of time apart (considering they would never have been able to follow through with no sec before the wedding day). He missed having his girls in the house but Kelly and James had kept him busy. "Great. God I can't believe this is finally happening, I mean…after Hallie I never thought this would happen to me and then Gabby came along…" He glanced down at the picture of the four of them, smiling when he focused on Gabby's smiling face.
"Yeah she really lit a fire up under you huh?" Kelly thought back to how Matt had changed since Gabby had walked into his life, he had been happy before that, but when they became friends and then more, Matt had changed significantly. "I don't think I ever saw you smile so much as you were after you guys started going out." Kelly had to laugh against at the eye roll that Matt answered with.
Matt stood, fixing his shirt as he did so, smiling up at Kelly, "James! You ready?" he called out, watching as James moved into the room. He and Kelly were dressed alike, light grey suits with white shirts, "You look great!" James smiled looking up at Kelly, they looked identical. "Alright…lets do this…" He moved from the room, getting a slap on the back from Kelly.
It was less than 20 minutes Matt stood with his hands behind his back as he waited by the entrance to the gazebo, the sun shone above them, his family smiling back at him, Kelly and James laughing by his side but he couldn't hold down the excitement that was bubbling inside of him. He was nervous, not nervous about getting married but just nervous, he was desperate to see Gabby, see what she was wearing and see how she looked.
The registrar standing next to him smiled, "This place looks amazing, did you do all this?" Matt nodded, beaming; he had overheard people talking about how great the backyard looked as they walked in, he was proud of the job he had done, glad that everyone else loved it, hopefully that Gabby would too.
"Thanks…I love how it turned out." They had organised the chairs around the tables, so when they had dinner it would be easy for them; it was laid back and casual, exactly what they both wanted from the day. In front of the gazebo they had laid down a flooring, something that would be used for the kids to play on and dance on when the music but also can be used for the adults to dance on when the time came. He let out a deep sigh as he turned back to the back doorway; he knew that Gabby wouldn't be too far off; he was just so desperate to see her.
It didn't take long before Laura stepped out from behind the door, her flowing green dress fitting into the setting perfectly, Matt's hands started to shake a little, there was no holding back now, it was only moments until he saw Gabby. Once Laura made her to his side, Shay came next, but what had them all laugh was the child in her arms, Alya shied away for a moment from the amount of people who were looking at her but the moment she saw her father, she called out to him, "Da!" struggling in Shay's arms until she placed her on the ground, her little feet running to Matt's side, latching onto his leg, arms raised wanting to be picked up. She had missed him, the most time she had spent away from her father, as he had only ever been away for 24 hours while on shift, not the three days that they had decided on before the wedding.
He lifted Alya into his arms, hugging her tightly, the little girl wrapping her arms around his neck, "Hey monster. I missed you." He whispered. Holding her until she noticed James, reaching for him now, staying in his arms comfortably as she played with shirt.
Just as Matt looked back up towards the door, his eyes widening and his lips curving into a full blown smile. He didn't even know what to think as his eyes found Gabby; she was stunning, she looked so happy, her smile wide and her eyes slightly teary as she looked back at him. He had imaged a million different dresses on her but this one was amazing, it fit her perfectly and he loved how she glowed in it.
Gabby had to hold back the gasp that almost fell from her lips as she saw Matt standing at the end of the yard, his hands behind his back, his black suit sitting perfectly on his body, he was smiling, he looked so happy. Slowly she made her way to his side, her smile never leaving her face, tears coming to his eyes. As Gabby reached him, he held out his hand for her, taking it instantly, "Hey…" She gave a shy smile, not really sure what to say to him.
Matt just shook his head, not really sure what to say to her, she had left him speechless, "Hi…" was all he could get out as he stared down at her.
And so they started, eventually the registrar given them both a chance to speak, Gabby started, taking a deep breath she turned to face him, squeezing his hands tightly, "Matt…when I came back to Chicago just over three years ago I never thought that my life would change as much as it did. You became my best friend and someone I could depend on, even when I probably didn't deserve it. I thought my life was complete with James but you created a new dream for me, a dream that included you in our lives and I love how you have taken us both into your life, how you have accepted us both. You have given me so much over the last couple of years, another child, which I never thought I would have, but you gave me the chance to believe in something again, believe in love and that I can be loved. You became my dream and having you in my life gave me the courage to pursue it."
Gabby shook her head and smiled, trying to hold the tears back as she took the white gold band from Laura, her hand shaking a little as she slipped it onto his finger. Swallowing deeply as it slid on, sitting perfectly on his finger.
Now it was Matt's turn but the first thing he did was bring her hands to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently before smiling, "3 years ago, you walked into the firehouse with this ease that I was drawn to immediately, I knew I was in trouble from that moment on. You become my best friend so quickly and then I realised I was falling in love with you. You have given me the life that I have longed for, the life I have dreamed about, you have no idea how happy you have made me."
Matt swallowed deeply, trying to remember what it was that he wanted to say, he had written down so many different things that he wanted to say to her but right now, standing in front of her, staring into her beautiful eyes, he couldn't remember a damn thing. "Ah…You are the most amazing person I have ever met, you give so much to so many people and you have allowed me into your life and your son's life and you have allowed me to try and give you as much as you give everyone else. My life has never been the same and I have you to thank for that."
He leaned over and reached for the ring that Kelly was handing him, the matching white gold ring slipping on to her finger instantly, struggling to hold back the lump that had formed in his throat, he had seen the tears well in Gabby's eyes as he spoke, her smile wider than he had ever seen it. Within moments they were husband and wife, holding each other close as their family clapped and cheered but it all fell away as Matt, whispered an 'I love you' before his lips crashed against hers, finally they were together, finally they were married.
Gabby held Matt close they kissed, her whole body felt like it was on fire, that something had changed in her and her life had now changed. How could one day change so much, how could a piece of paper change so much? He was her husband, she was married to the man she loved more than anything, he had given her the most amazing gift, he had given her a life and given her son a life she never thought he would know.
Matt leaned over and reached for Gabby's hand, pulling her from the chair she was sitting on, "Come with me…" he whispered, his hand slipping around her waist, another kiss being placed on her lips, "You look amazing, I can't believe you are all mine…" Gabby laughed, pulling him towards the dance floor, a motion that quietened down the backyard, everyone knowing that it was now that they would be having their first dance.
Kelly changed the song to something that Matt and Gabby had chosen together, a song they had heard one day and both known it was their wedding song. Matt slipped his arm around her waist, the other holding her hand tightly, instinctively Gabby rested her head on his chest, her free arm around his neck, sighing deeply as they started to sway to the music.
You and me were always with each other
Before we knew the other was ever there.
You and me, we belong together
Just like a breath needs the air.
I told you if you called I would come running;
Across the high's, the lows and the in between.
When they had both heard the song months ago, they had instantly reached for the other; their hands locking tightly as Gabby pulled him to her, her hands brushing over his face before she pushed him against the wall, thankful that James was at school and Alya was asleep.
You and me, we've got two minds that think as one
And our hearts march to the same beat.
They say everything it happens for a reason
You can be flawed enough but perfect for a person
Someone who will be there for you when you fall apart
Guiding your direction in the dark
Oh it's you and me
"This has been such an amazing day Matt, thank you for all of this, you have made today so incredible." Gabby raised herself up onto her toes and kissed him gently, running her tongue across his bottom lip, making him groan, his eyebrows raising at the feeling on her turning him on.
"Gabby…" he moaned against her lips before pulling away, "You have made this day so incredible. I meant what I said today, you have made me so happy, I can't thank you enough for everything you have done for me and have let me do. Letting me into James' life, to your life. You really have given me everything." He leaned his forehead against her, bringing her as close to him as humanly possible. "I love you so much baby."
You and me we're searching for the same light
Desperate for a cure to this disease
Well some days are better than others,
But I fear no thing as long as you're as me
They say everything it happens for a reason
You can be flawed enough but perfect for a person
Someone who will be there for you when you fall apart
Guiding your direction in the dark
"I love you too…" Gabby kissed him once more, laughing as he spun her around, dipping her a little. "Ma" Matt glanced to his side, pulling Gabby up quickly, both glanced to their side, finding Alya standing there with her hands held high, wanting to be lifted up. "Oh my little monster!" They stopped dancing, allowing Gabby pull her into her arms, hugging her close, Matt wrapped his arms around Gabby's shoulder, his free hand tickling Alya's stomach, who giggled loudly.
Alya giggled at the top of her lungs, pushing his hand away for her stomach and then burying her head in Gabby's neck. She loved it when Matt tickled her, she would push him away, hide but glance up at him almost daring him to do it again and so they would continue going back and forward. James had since wandered over to their side, reaching for Matt's hand, holding it tightly.
They were a family, they had always been a family but now everything that they had ever imaged had come true, they were married to the person they loved with all their hearts and they had two amazing children who were their everything.
They were each other's everything.
Oh it's you and me
And we have come to the end of this amazing story, thank you all again for everything you have said and all the love you have given me. I couldn't have written this without you!
