Chapter 52
Bard of Girion
Our little reunion was short lived. I didn't even get 5 minutes before Smaug woke with a terrible roar.
"Everyone into the tunnel quickly! If he sees me, my plan will fail! Hurry!"
We all ran forward into the tunnel when Bifur cried,
"~Wait! Wait! My cousins Bofur and Bombur! They are still down below!~"
"They will be killed!" Nori said.
"NO!" I said.
Thorin grabbed me.
"Get into the tunnel! Fili and Kili you too! The dragon shall not have all of us."
I kissed him hard on the lips before he left. I watched in fear as my fiancée risked his life to save our friends. Smaug came flying around the corner and Thorin and the few others leapt into the tunnel. I put my arms around him and we closed the door. We were now shut in the mountain.
Bard's POV
I had tried to convince the Master that Smaug was coming but no matter what I said he would not listen. He believed Sonya to be a sorceress and an evil one at that. I knew there was something strange about her, but not evil.
It was a cold winter day when I heard it. A terrible roar from the Mountain. Smaug was coming!
"Everyone get out!"
I could hear woman screaming for their children, the men were shouting for other men to help them fight. I remembered what Sonya had said about his left breast. I looked to Gem.
"You must go to the Mountain. Go to Sonya."
The cat ran off and I climbed onto a roof. As Smaug destroyed my home I waited for him to fly over me. As he did I fired and struck him in his weak spot. He came crashing down towards me. I jumped into the lake and only just managed not to be crushed by the now dead dragon. I quickly swam to shore and when I surfaced it was as of the thickest fog had covered the land. I could hardly see 3 feet in front of me. I wandered towards the voices of the survivors.
"What shall we do?!"
"Where will we live? What about food?"
All these questions were directed to the Master. I strode through the crowd and walked up to him. I picked him up by his front.
"None of this would have happened if you had listened to me! To Queen Sonya! Our homes may have been lost yes, but no one would have died!"
I threw him down in anger and looked to the people.
"My fellow villagers, we have lost our homes, family and friends. But for the people you love you have passed, they are in a better place, and for those still alive, help them now. I vow to help rebuild our homes…..in Dale."
Several people gasped and there were whispers amongst the people.
"Perhaps I can help!"
I turned and there was the Elven King, Thranduil. I smiled and bowed.
"My lord."
"I had a feeling those dwarves and the girl would bring this upon you."
I gritted my teeth.
"The Queen of Erebor was a personal friend of mine. I know this would be the last thing she would have wanted to happen. I fear she and the others have perished."
I saw the smile in his eyes. I also knew if I wanted him to help my people I would have to be respectful.
Sonya's POV
I saw the smoke from the mountain and I knew Smaug was dead, but how many people had perished with him I did not. I was worried, how many died? How many children with lives ahead of them?
"Miss Sonya?"
I looked at Bilbo.
"Are you well? Is it Matthew?"
I smiled a little.
"No, I….I'm just worried. All the people of Lake-Town….."
He nodded but didn't say another word. When Thorin came Bilbo smiled and left. He took my hand and I looked at him.
"I know you're probably really pissed off so….so go ahead and yell at me."
He shook his head and touched my face.
"No Sonya…..You did what you thought was best." He put his hand on my belly. "Matthew has a brave mother."
I smiled and hugged him.
"I love you." I said.
"I love you too."
