Me: SO, I'm very sorry for not updating sooner. I was actually going to update yesterday, and I completely forgot. Reasons behind my not updating: lack of motivation, not feeling up to it, un-cooperative internet, the flu (still kinda getting over that one), and I've come up with at least three new ideas this past week alone. I'm trying not to come to a dead stop, I'll try to update at least every two weeks, if not once a week. I'm trying my best here ladies and gents.. I promise. I hope you all enjoy! Also, I'll be working on revising my previous stories. My writing style has changed just a bit, and so my attention is spread out to attend to everything.

To Ern Estine 13624: I'm glad you're enjoying it! ^w^

To cd: Thanks, I tried ^w^

Enjoy~!

Chapter 52

Hero

Akari used her key to get into the vet's office. They weren't open on Sundays, and almost everyone was still in bed at five in the morning. The two looked around, making sure no one was there, just in case. The truck was across the street, so it looked like they were at the house across the street, and not breaking into a vet's office.

Kiseki broke away from Akari to make sure the vet wasn't working on his day off in his office. She peeked the door open, looking around the whole office as she slowly walked inside. A paper lay on his desk, one that had been filled out for the Bull Mastiff they were currently stealing. She grabbed it, having an idea of how to stay out of trouble if they happened to get caught.

"Pst!" Akari whispered loudly "Let's go, he's this way."

"Coming" the silver haired girl said before following her tri-colored companion, making sure to shut the door behind her.

"Alright, I've got the catch pole. Now, don't open the door all the way. Just enough for the pole to get in."

"Okay. Be careful" Kiseki hissed, unlocking the cage as the pole came closer.

"I've got him, let it open, and step back."

Luckily Kiseki was good at following orders, because she quickly stepped back as the dog lunged at her way, attempting to wiggle out of the pole. The two quickly dragged him out the door, making sure to lock it, and leave everything as it had been, with the exception of the dog that was now in their possession.

"How are we going to get him up there?" The older asked, looking to maroon eyes for the answer.

"Here, take the pole, I'll lift him, and you make sure to keep his head away from me."

Kiseki took the pole from her, using all her might to make sure her best friend didn't get bit. Akari struggled to get the large dog in the cage, but after a few minutes finally managed to get him in. "That was something" Kiseki sighed as they got in truck.

"I'll say" Akari agreed, taking off down the road where they could take off their disguises safely.

"She'll be here any minute" Yugi cheered, barely able to sit still from his spot in the front yard.

"Honey, you're going to make her turn around and leave again" Yami chuckled.

"Ah, c'mon dad, let him have his fun. It's kinda funny" Yuki snickered.

The truck pulled up in front of the house around eight in the morning. Akari was more than glad to park on the street and run towards the group waiting for her.

"Kar!" Yuki cheered, as the two toppled over.

"I've missed you big brother!"

"I've missed you too! What's my surprise?"

"Typical Yuki, always more excited about the surprise I bring" Akari giggled as she got to her feet, walking over to hug her two fathers.

"Welcome home" Yugi greeted as he squeezed her.

"It's so good to be home" the girl sighed, still smiling as she turned to her older father. "How are you doing daddy?"

"A lot better now" Yami chuckled as he wrapped her in a hug. "Now" he continued as he pulled away "What's this I hear about favors?"

"Well, Yuki's surprise and the favors are kinda all one thing. But, first I have something to tell you..."

"Well?"

"Daddy... I stole a dog... From a vet's office that I volunteer at..." Akari's head was down and eyes were up, looking at her father like a spanked puppy.

"You'd better have a damn good reason behind this, Akari Hoshimi Sennen. Or so help me.."

"I think I can help there, uncle Yami" Kiseki said, walking up and pulling a paper from her pocket. "The dog was to heal and be released back to the shelter, however, the vet planned to put him down tomorrow morning, leaving this that says he died from infection from his wounds. I did try to persuade Akari out of it, but after reading this, I'm with her. This dog deserves a second chance, and if anyone can give that to him, it's you."

"So you helped her steal this dog?" Yami asked, looking down and reading the paper.

"Yes sir."

He sighed, shaking his head before looking back at Akari. "How bad is he?"

"He's in the back of my truck in the kennel if you wanna see him. He's kinda vicious... But, I think he's just scared..."

Bakura and Ryou pulled up in the driveway as the group was headed out to Akari's truck. "What's goin' on?" Bakura asked, walking over with Ryou at his side.

"Welcome home, Kissi" Ryou greeted, hugging his daughter.

"Thanks papa."

"Our daughters stole a dog..." Yami said, peeking around the back of the truck to look at the two white haired men.

"Kiseki!" The two screamed in unison.

"It was for a good reason though" Yami defended.

Akari opened the back door to reveal the sleeping hound. Or at least he appeared to be sleeping, at first glance. The big brown eyes that stared back at them revealed otherwise. "He seems very calm" her father observed.

"He does.. until you.. get him.. out.."

"Is that so?"

"Yeah."

"You still got the catch pole?"

"Yeah, but he'll go crazy and try to bite anyone, daddy."

"Which is exactly why everyone is going to back off so I can get him in the fence and deal with him alone. I won't make any promises though, 'Kar.. I don't work miracles."

"Well, before you deal with that, can we talk about the other favor?"

Yami turned his crimson stare on her. "So both favors were for me?"

"Yes sir..."

"What is it?"

Akari skipped to the back seat of the truck, pulling out a box. "Well, I figured my big brother could use a companion in the Police Academy... So... I did some shopping.." She pulled out the mostly black German Shepherd puppy "And this is the guy I found.." Akari chuckled as her brother ran forward, snatching the puppy away and cooing about how cute he was. "He was so adorable, that I decided I wanted one too. So I got this little panda colored beauty."

She pulled the second puppy out as she heard a thudding noise. Looking over she found her father banging his head against her truck. "I tell you guys no more dogs, and you don't listen... You never listen to me... Why do I say anything anymore..?"

"But daddy... We'll have to have protection, and you can train them.. right? So they're ready when they're of age? Please?"

Yami looked over to two sets of sparkling maroon eyes, one set darker than the other, but both shimmering with the puppy eyed look they'd inherited from their younger father. He looked over and found a set of violet eyes the same way. "What the hell are you begging for?"

"Oh, let the kids keep the puppies, honey.. C'mon. Akari did it to surprise her big brother, and don't you want them to have protection?"

"Ugh" Yami groaned "I'm never going to win with you guys and those damn eyes. Fine. But only because I want you all protected. Now, let's deal with the Bull in the back. You guys get back, go to the other side of the gate so I can pull him through. 'Kura, come open the gate so I can get the pole around him."

"Gotchya boss."

Yami wasn't worried, he mostly just wanted to get a good look at the dog, so he knew what he was dealing with. If the dog was as badly abused as the paper had said, there was a good chance that he couldn't help him. But, if Akari was right, and he was scared more than he was vicious, there was a good chance he could earn his trust, and make him see that he was safe.

The dog snarled at the approaching rope, biting the pole that guided said rope. Yami quickly put it around his neck, yelling at Bakura to move away as he pushed the door open with the pole, bringing the dog from the truck. The large canine looked at him, his lips rippled back and his eyes glowing furiously. Yami felt no fear, he remained calm, knowing the dog was feeding off his emotions.

"Alright, I'm gonna take him inside the gate, as soon as we're through, lock the gate. No one comes in while I'm dealing with him. Yuki, go get me that bowl of chicken from last night."

"On it" the boy chirped, running up through the yard and into the house. He returned a few minutes later, his puppy and the bowl his father had asked for in his arms.

"Hold it until I get through the gate. I'll get it from you then."

"Okie doke."

"I think you two should put those puppies in the truck until I know how he's gonna act. He may go charging right after them."

"Good point" Akari said, opening the door and putting her puppy in. Yuki walked over and put his in as well, the two of them leaving them in the box as they shut the door.

"Alright" Yami grunted, tugging the dog along through the gate. He grabbed the bowl from Yuki as he pulled the dog through, making sure the gate was shut and locked before releasing the hound. Instead of charging at him, the canine circled him.

Yami didn't move his body, but instead watched him with his eyes, his own aura calm and unafraid, while the dog's was all over the place. He didn't try to attack, but instead growled, showing his teeth as he circled. The man still held the catch pole in one hand, the bowl in the other. Yami dropped the pole, causing the dog to snarl as he jumped back at his left.

"Your dad is gonna get bit" Kiseki whispered, covering her eyes with her hands and peeking through the fingers.

"What is he doing?" Akari asked, watching as her father narrowed his eyes at the dog, his head not moving, and the rest of his body remaining just as still.

"He's studying him" Bakura answered. He seemed unfazed by Yami's actions, and merely stood there watching him.

"Studying him? Why?" Yuki asked, looking at the older white haired man for the answer.

"It's how he solves so many things" Yugi answered instead. "He studies them to see what the best solution is."

Their attention went back to the pair in the yard, where Yami was slowly lowering himself to the ground. The dog's eyes never left him, and he backed away a few feet as the man sat down, his eyes constantly on the dog. He wasn't sitting in a way that surrendered to the dog, but he sat in a way that let him know he wasn't going to hurt him. His knee was drawn up under his left arm, the bowl hanging loosely in front of him.

He picked out a piece from the bowl, tossing it in the dog's direction. The canine jumped away, afraid of what had just been thrown his way. His nose wiggled as he sniffed around, his steps slowing as he found a new scent that made his stomach growl. Yami didn't move in his direction, but instead pulled out another piece and tossed it a little lighter, making it land in front of the dog, but closer to him.

The Mastiff walked forward, snatching up the chicken that was tossed. Yami kept up the process, leading him forward, a step at a time. Once he was four steps from Yami, he caught on to what the man was doing, making him whimper as he started to back away. Yami remained quiet as he started coaxing the dog forward once again.

It took three more attempts for the dog to take the piece of meat that sat two steps away from Yami's feet. He stopped there though, he wouldn't take a step closer to get the meat anymore. He didn't back away, but he wouldn't come forward. He just stood there, watching Yami's every movement.

The man reached back into the bowl, taking out another piece and leaving it in his hand. He stretched his arm out, thinking that maybe the dog would come forward if it were in his hand, while his other hand was occupied with the bowl.

"I can see that you're hungry" he told the canine quietly, keeping his voice low so he wouldn't spook him. "I can also see that you're afraid. I dunno why. I don't know what previous people have done to you. From the looks of it, nothing good. But I'm not gonna do that. You're a good boy.. Aren't you? You remind me a lot of Brutus... He was afraid, but I didn't give him a chance to back away, I don't think he would've anyway to be honest.."

Achille tilted his head, a sure sign that he was listening to the man.

"You can back away, if that's what you wish to do. But it'll only end in you being put down. Or, you can stay. I'll sit here all night if it'll earn your trust. Whenever you're ready though, this meat is for you."

The dog looked around, anxious to do something, but the look in the man's eyes told him it would be okay. His stomach growled, begging to be fed again, but his heart thudded so loudly, afraid to take a step forward. "You can trust me" Yami whispered.

The large dog lowered his head, his tail still hanging limply behind him. He lifted a paw only to put it back down, his eyes wandering up to see that the man still hadn't moved. He lifted his head a little bit, still a little indecisive, but deciding to listen to the man's words. He walked forward, passing the hand without a glance and stopping with his nose almost touching the man's nose.

"Well... It's nice to finally meet you" Yami chuckled, letting go of the bowl to slowly lift his hand to the dog's head. "Who's a good boy?"

The tail that hadn't wagged since he'd been found, was thumping against his legs happily as the dog walked forward, knocking Yami backwards in his attack. The man laughed as he was assaulted with puppy love from the overgrown canine.

Akari stood behind the fence, tears running down her face as she watched the dog take a complete three-sixty. The 'vicious' canine was loving, licking, and wrestling her father on the ground. Grass stains covered the man's jeans, but the laughter was contagious.

Me: I know that's not as long as some of you would've liked, but I've been having a bad habit of skipping over words, letters, wording sentences wrong, etc. And I'm just not able to make chapters that long... I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter, even if it wasn't very long, and until next time ladies and gentlemen * waves * Goodbye!
