WHEN WE WERE KIDS
CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
On friday the twentieth of november, I woke up, sad.
I went to the bathroom, sad.
I got ready, sad.
I ate breakfast, sad.
Today was Natsu and my last day in Magnolia.
We were leaving that night, and no one knew what would happen when we restored the time stream, if we restored it. Mokarov said he had faith in us, but honestly, I could of just lived like we were. There wasn't a problem, we were happy, and so what if we lived the same things over and over again? Nothing was going to change. Mokarov said he felt it, that this time, something had changed. Natsu called him barmy.
"Lucy, are you packed?" Silver asked.
"I was the evening you told us."
"Okay. Warm stuff, it's winter soon."
"Silver, not to be mean or anything, this is the last trip we will probably do, the least of my concerns is whether I have packed warm clothes or not. I packed what's necessary." I said. I hadn't been nice to her lately, I guess I blamed it on her...even though I shouldn't...
"Okay. I trust you Lucy. I'm sorry none of the elders could come, but we have a responsibility to protect here, and Mocky has the guild."
"I know, I know...we'll be fine." I said. Natsu and I had spoken about it, when we lay in my bed, his arm around me, as he kissed my shoulder. We spoke about what would happen if one of us died, what would happen if we restored the time stream, what would happen then...
"We'll be fine, we won't die." He would always say that. I just wanted to cuddle up to him closer, keep him with me, and not let go.
"I'm off." I told Silver, grabbing my bag, and walking out the doorway.
"Lucy!" Silver called after me. I retraced my steps.
"Yes?"
"I love you, okay?" She said. I smiled at her apologetically, nodded, and walked out again.
My breath rose in steam, and the cold hit my face. I wasn't fond of winter. I liked summer, skirts without tights, showing off skin. I liked that. But not cold, now I had to wear tights, and a long sleeved top. I walked over to Natsu's house, and knocked on the door.
"Morning." He said, and kissed me.
"Why on earth aren't you wearing a coat?!" I said, noticing he was in just a shirt.
"I'm not cold, why, is it cold?" He asked.
"Are you kidding?! I feel like my eyelashes have iccicles hanging off them!" I laughed, as he put his hands around my chin. "Aaaah..." I said, holding them closer.
"Yo." A voice said from behind us. I saw Cana, walking along with Gray, who was also-
"Gray. Not you as well." I sighed.
"What?" He asked.
"You're not wearing a coat."
"I'm not cold."
"Copycat." Natsu said.
"Shush, children, we have school to attend to. Oh, and a basket ball competition on monday." Cana said, drinking. I looked at Natsu, and he looked at me.
"Actually." He started. "We won't be coming to school on monday."
"What? Damn...well I guess you'll be here for the final in week then." Gray said.
"No. We won't be here for a while." I said. The two stopped dead.
"What do you mean?" Gray said.
"She means what she said, idiot." Natsu replied.
"Did you just call me an idiot, Tabasco Brain?!"
"Yeah, I did, Ice Pants!"
"There they go again..." I sighed, as Natsu and Gray started fighting.
"Lucy, what do you mean?" Cana repeated. I sighed.
"Something's...come up...we have to go for a while..." I said. We were told not to say anything.
"Explain."
"I...I...I can't..." I said.
"Lucy! That's not an answer, tell us why you're not gonna be here!" She shouted. I took a step back.
"There's been a...problem." I said. "I can't tell you about it, just it's important and we need to sort it out." I said.
"Lucy! Be specific for cryin' out loud!" She shouted louder. I wanted to tell her so much, but I wasn't allowed. I held my breath, and wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight.
"I'm going to miss you, Cana." I muttered into her ear. I let her go, and looked at her face, smiling sadly. She was agasp, and then she frowned.
"Lucy..." she said quietly.
"I am seriously going to miss you." I said.
She dropped the bottle, and it broke on the floor. She flung her arms around my neck, and clutched me so hard.
That was magic that was. She managed to understand without me telling her. That's what was amazing about Cana.
We arrived at school, Natsu and Gray still glaring at each other, Cana silent, and normal, for once. We sat at the usual table, where Lisanna, Mira, and Erza were.
"Hey guys!" Lisanna said, as we sat down.
"Hi." I smiled.
"Yo...we need to tell you something..." he said.
"Yeah, shouldn't we tell the others too?"
"They can pass the message. But..."
"What? Have you done something to her you shouldn't of?!" Erza immediately concluded.
"What? No!" He sighed.
"No...we're leaving this afternoon, we won't be back for a while." I said. They stopped speaking.
"Why?" Mira asked.
"Can't tell you." Natsu said.
"But...it might be the last time we see each other, so we wanted to tell you." I added. Lisanna wrapped her arms around me.
"We understand. Please, don't get hurt. I want to see you again." She said, her voice close to a whisper.
"We do too." Natsu said, hearing her.
"Why are you going?" Mira asked again.
"We can't tell you, but it's important, to everyone." I said. She got up, and walked off.
"She'll come round." Lisanna said.
"W-why?" Erza asked as well.
"Uch! For the third bloody time we can't tell you!" Natsu shouted. Erza hung her head, then looked back up.
"I understand." She said, before walking away, leaving Gray, Cana, Lisanna, and us.
"It's sad, isn't it?" Gray said.
"Yeah, I won't miss you, if we don't come back." Natsu said, raising his fist.
"Nope, I won't even miss you the moment you're gone." Gray added, as he bumped his fist against Natsu's.
The rest of the morning passed with people asking us if we were really leaving, why, and if we would come back. The answers were always : Yes, Can't tell you, Maybe.
We both knew the truth though, if we managed our objectif, then we wouldn't come back.
We were excused off school that afternoon. I felt like just staying with them in the timeloop. I didn't even give a damn that we were in one. We were together, friends,we had fun. And now... to think I was worrying about exams...
"Lucy." Natsu said.
"Hm?"
"I...want to do...what we did...again." he said, looking down at the pavement, blushing. I laughed. "What?!" He said, angry and embarrassed. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and jumped onto his back. He caught the nooks of my knees, and carried me. "Why am I giving you a piggy back?" He asked.
"Because I love it when you're embarrassed, and, I want to do it again as well." I muttered into his ear.
"Not soon though, I mean...it was like a week ago. Four days." He said.
"My thoughts exactly." I said, kissing his shoulder as he carried me.
"You're heavy." He said. I kicked him.
"Shh." I said, and laughed. He put me on the ground, and we walked home.
I went into Natsu's house with Silver when I had dropped off my bag, in his kitchen, there was Polyuchka, Rob, Yajima, and Mokarov. Silver joined them, she had the dagger with her, in a leather sheeth.
"You'll need this, and this." She said, giving the dagger to me, along with a belt.
"What's this for?" I asked. She smiled, and her hand was in the fold of my skirt. "H-how did you know?!" I said. She laughed.
"Lucy, I do the laundry. By the way, excellent sewing." She nodded, as she bought out my keys. She wrapped the belt around my waist, hooked the keys on the hook, and tucked the dagger in the belt. I looked over at Natsu, he was putting the map in his bag.
"Remember, someone is still trying to kill you." Polyuchka 'reassured'.
"We know." Natsu said grumpily.
"So, do we have the names of inns that our on the way?" I asked, holding on to the pouch of money.
"Yes, but some nights, you'll be sleeping rough." Yajima answered.
"Don't mind." Natsu said. I really did. It was damn freezing. But then that gave me an excuse to sleep right next to Natsu. Not that I needed one.
"Are you ready to leave?" Rob said. I closed my eyes.
'You're not a kid anymore, and this is the last time you'll see Silver.'
"Y-yeah." I said.
"Ready as I'll ever be I guess." Natsu said.
Silver walked over to me.
"You take care of yourself, Lulu." She said. She had watery eyes, and a-
A smile I hadn't seen in a long time.
The smile a mother gives you.
"Silver." I said, a lump in my throat. "This is the last time I'll see you, isn't it?" I asked.
"It might be, we don't know what restoring the time stream will do." She said.
"I love you Silver-obba-chan." I said, as I wrapped my arms around her. She gave a sniff, and hugged me as well.
"Good luck." Polyuchka told me.
"Thanks." I answered, giving her a smile. I might of imagined it, but I thought I saw the corners of her lips turn up.
"And so, the youngest generation took off." Old Rob said. He was kind hearted, he always made us laugh.
Natsu and I grabbed our bags, and said goodbye one last time, before we walked out into the cold night.
We arrived at the Magnolia sign, and I looked back. He walked to my side, and took my hand.
"It's beautiful." He said.
"Wow, you actually said that, that's not very you." I laughed. I looked back at the city, and sighed. It was beautiful. The lights that shown around houses, the canal that ran right through the middle, Cardia Cathedral that looked so big and grand,...
"Come." He said, taking my hand. I held onto it willingly. My hands were frozen.
"Are you nervous?" I asked him. He sighed.
"No. I'm not for some weird reason. It's...easy... I hate myself for this being easy." He said.
"Don't hate yourself." I sighed, before kissing him.
"I love you."
"Me too."
And so we left, on a journey that might be our last, not even sure what the aim was.
Mokarov was standing in the doorway, as the wind blew around, stinging his face.
"Mocky." Silver said, as she walked next to him. "Don't worry, you made the right choice."
"Did I? They're just kids..." he sighed.
"Hardly. And you're right, this is there problem."
"I could of gone with them...they'd be much safer."
"They would be, but would they be able to solve the problem and grow up?" She asked. There was silence.
"I miss my son."
"I miss Lucy."
