Chapter 53. Cat Nap
Another exhausting day of classes meant that Ruby was pretty much asleep on her feet.
It was a miracle she managed to get herself dressed into her pajamas and brush her teeth. Weiss had to stand watch over her to make sure she didn't quit halfway through because she was tired. It wasn't long after that when the leader all but slumped into her partner's arms, snoring loudly.
The rest of her team managed to hoist her up onto her own bed, Yang holding her from atop the bed while Weiss and Blake steadied their leader's legs. Weiss didn't like how much Ruby's bed was shaking with the weight of both sisters on top of it, so when Yang jumped down and quite literally rattled the room, Weiss jumped back into Blake's arms and declared she refused to sleep in her own bed tonight.
Blake wasted no time in offering to share with her girlfriend, but Yang refused to be left out of the cuddle puddle.
So somehow, they all managed to squeeze into Blake's bed (for some reason having Ruby's bed suspended by ropes overhead was more concerning to Weiss than having Yang's bed being held up only by a few stacks of books). Both options were equally as precarious, but neither of her girlfriends bothered to point that out, though.
Blake had lain down in the middle of her mattress, pulling Weiss into her left side while Yang flopped down on the right. It was lucky that Zwei had chosen to jump up and sleep with Ruby, because there wasn't an inch to spare on Blake's bed.
Their legs and feet were all crossed together beneath the blankets while their long hair made for a tangled mess up above. Like their leader, the others were all exhausted, and none of them were really in the mood for anything other than sleep tonight.
Blake kissed each of her girlfriends goodnight before Weiss and Yang leaned over her to share a kiss of their own. After that, Yang flicked off the lamp, and all was quiet, save for Ruby's soft snores.
Weiss tucked herself into Blake's chest, sighing lightly as she hugged herself close. Blake was asleep in a matter of minutes, and Weiss envied her.
But it was soon made clear to her that she wasn't the only one still awake.
There was a tiny sound on Blake's other side, like nails running over material. Weiss peeked one eye open to find Yang propped up on her elbows, leaning over the Faunus girl, stroking through her hair. That was probably the main reason as to why Blake had fallen asleep so quickly.
Yang caught Weiss' eye in the darkness and winked, to which the heiress sighed. She watched as Yang's hand started making its way up to Blake's shoulders, then headed toward her soft Faunus ears. Weiss pushed herself up a bit and hissed over to her.
"Yang, don't. Let her sleep."
Her girlfriend pouted.
"Aw, c'mon, Weiss. Didn't you ever wonder what it's like to touch them?"
Weiss hesitated. The three of them had only been dating for a few weeks now, and she didn't want to overstep any boundaries. But her lack of an immediate response made Yang grin.
"See? You do wonder what it'd be like."
"But not like this," Weiss mumbled. "We should ask her first. If we do it while she's asleep, I feel we're taking advantage of her somehow."
"Then what if I told you I'd asked her before if it was okay and she said yes?"
"...Then I wouldn't fully believe you."
"Weiss, come on. Would I lie to you?"
"Well-"
"Come on. She'll be fine. Trust me. You worry too much."
Weiss was still skeptical. She didn't plan to participate, but she didn't necessarily plan to stop Yang, either.
The brawler continued stroking through Blake's loose hair, gradually making her way towards her Faunus ears. Weiss bit her lip, still uncertain.
"Be gentle!" she whispered.
"I know!"
Even in the dark, Weiss could see Yang rolling her eyes.
If Blake hadn't been sleeping between them, the heiress would've flicked the blonde on the nose. But for now, she simply watched as Yang started to lightly scratch Blake's Faunus ears.
Weiss was nervous at first that Blake would be roused, and possibly even be angry at them for touching her ears without permission.
But Blake didn't stir much, save for making a very soft sound in the back of her throat.
Weiss hugged her a little tighter, trying to determine if she was going to wake up, but she didn't. In fact, she could feel Blake go lax in her arms, letting out a deep sigh. Weiss was surprised she would react so favorably, even in her sleep.
Yang peered over Blake's shoulder at the heiress and smirked.
"See? Told ya so."
Weiss glowered back at her.
"Whatever. You've had your fun, now stop it and go to bed."
"Aw, but it's still early! Just because Ruby's asleep doesn't mean the rest of us have to be! Plus, Blake's totally enjoying this." She gave another few scratches to her ears.
Weiss groaned.
"Fine, but don't come crying to me if she gets upset with you."
"She won't! I already told you, she gave me permission before."
Weiss huffed and simply settled into Blake's loose embrace. She closed her eyes, trying to invite sleep to come and sweep her away while she listened to Blake's deep breathing, nestling into the warmth that radiated from her body.
But before long, Weiss could decipher another sound. It was low, gravelly, like small marbles rolling across a tiled floor.
Weiss froze for a minute, trying to ensure it wasn't just in her head. She pressed herself closer to her sleeping girlfriend, turning her face to put an ear to her chest. Sure enough, past the gentle thump of Blake's heart, Weiss could hear a tiny rumbling sound. She couldn't stop herself from mumbling out loud.
"Impossible..."
Yang had been petting Blake's ears all the while until now, and she curiously peeked over her shoulder again to look at Weiss.
"What's up?"
The heiress propped herself up again to make eye contact.
"She's purring!"
"What?"
"You heard me!"
"No way!"
"Do you think I'm lying?"
Yang didn't respond. She simply huddled closer to Blake's back and put her ear between her shoulders.
And though she'd never think Weiss was actually lying to her, she was almost dumbfounded to find that the heiress was right.
There was a steady purr reverberating throughout her partner's body, full and warm and constant. When she held herself close, she could feel the little vibrations straying onto her own skin. Her hands paused what they were doing at Blake's ears for a moment as she simply listened.
"Holy crap."
"See?"
Weiss wasn't sure if she was more surprised, delighted, or nervous. Surprised because this was something new to both Yang and herself. Delighted because it was simply adorable. And nervous because she wasn't sure if Blake wanted them to know yet, or ever.
But it was certainly an astonishing discovery either way.
Weiss found herself unable to pull away from Blake. She just wanted to listen to the sound of that purr.
She found it was much the same for Yang.
There was just something about it. Not only the fact that it was rather charming and unexpected of their taciturn Faunus girlfriend, but something more than just that.
Blake's purr meant that she trusted them, that curled up with the two of them in their dorm room was one of the only places where she was totally comfortable, and felt safe and content.
Weiss was proud she could help Blake feel so secure and relaxed, enough to purr.
After a moment, Yang continued to pet Blake's ears and comb her nails through her hair, moving her hands in long, slow strokes in time with her girlfriend's breathing. Weiss eventually caved and decided to do the same.
Yang nodded silent encouragement as she focused her hand on one ear, and Weiss gingerly made contact with the other. She did her best to keep her touch light and gentle, while Yang's was much more bold.
Considering the fact that Blake was still facing her, Weiss took the liberty upon herself to pepper light kisses along her hairline. She shifted herself up a bit, cradling Blake's head to her chest with her free hand as the other got a better angle to pet her ears.
Yang snuggled closer to Blake's back, sharing her natural heat to make the purr become louder. The hand that wasn't caressing Blake's ears was on the Faunus girl's upturned side, rubbing little circles over her hip. She leaned down to kiss Blake's exposed shoulder, then used her teeth to pull the collar of her nightgown back up into place.
For a while, they simply continued to spoil her, even if she was asleep and couldn't fully appreciate it. But Blake still showed signs that she was experiencing the bliss to some degree.
For one thing, the purr never stopped or softened, but only got louder as time went on. And she kept making content little moans and noises, occasionally mumbling Yang's name or letting her nails curl lightly into Weiss' back.
Every time she let out a whimper, Yang would smile and Weiss would tense, fearing they'd woken her.
But half an hour must have gone by without such an incident. The brawler and the heiress just couldn't get enough of Blake - her soft fur, her happy purr, her warm presence.
At one point, they both simply pressed close to listen for a while.
At that time, Weiss let out a long sigh, the second half of which turned into a yawn.
"Well, Yang, you were right. I guess she must enjoy it."
But no sooner had she spoken than she felt an unmistakable shift in motion. Blake let out a small, sleepy whine along with another exhale. As her eyelids lifted, Weiss immediately froze the hand at her ears. Yang groaned from the other side of the bed.
"Weiss, look what you did! You woke her up!"
She was just joking really, but Weiss took it to heart.
"I didn't mean to! Blake, I'm so sorry!"
She was trying to tell herself to stop touching her ears, but Weiss' fingers froze in place cupped right at the base of one. Weiss was half expecting the Faunus girl to be angry with them, but before she could even get a word in, Yang was already blabbing.
"Well, before we woke ya up, did'ja have a nice nap, Blake? Heck, I didn't know you could purr!"
"Yang!"
"What?"
Weiss groaned and buried her face in the pillow for a moment before looking back up to Blake.
"Blake, I'm sorry we did this without your permission. There's no excuse-"
"What?" The Faunus girl's ears perked up, and her eyes widened. "Weiss, calm down. There's nothing to apologize for. I don't mind."
Clearly, Weiss had intended to give a long-winded discourse and apology, but she cut off.
"...Huh?"
Blake pushed herself up onto her elbows.
"Yeah. It's fine. I mean it. I guess you couldn't tell, but I was awake most of the time. If either of you had done something I didn't like, I would've asked you to stop."
"What?" Weiss almost blurted out, but she quickly lowered her tone, though the shock remained. "You were awake this whole time?"
Blake nodded.
"Yeah. I mean I might've lapsed a bit here and there, but for the most part, I felt and heard every single thing. On that note, I really did give Yang permission in advance to do this. You just weren't there at the time and it hasn't come up since, so I didn't mention it to you. Sorry."
Weiss' jaw dropped while Yang gave a triumphant laugh.
"Ha! Told ya so, Weiss."
"Oh hush!"
Yang chuckled, slipping both arms around Blake and tugging her so that she rolled over to face her.
"But anyways, I had no idea you could purr, Blake! That's so cool!"
The Faunus girl willingly turned to face her for a moment.
"Well, I've never recently really been in a situation that called for it. And none of you ever asked, so..."
"Damn! So all this time, I could've been cuddling up with you and Weiss and we could've been listening to you purr? We missed out."
"Not really..." Blake mumbled, leaning over her to kiss her lips for a moment.
Yang hummed, looping her arms around her partner to bring her down more. With Blake's chest pressed over hers, she could still feel a few tiny vibrations lingering.
But it was too late at night for a full-on make-out session, and Blake soon pulled away and laid back down on her side. With Yang temporarily satisfied, she turned back around to Weiss.
The heiress still seemed fretful, like she feared she might've done something wrong. Blake smiled kindly in the darkness and wrapped her arms around her, pulling her close.
"Weiss, it's okay. Really." She kissed her cheek, then trailed her lips in a line until she found Weiss' and kissed her softly. "Thank you for worrying, though. It means a lot that you'd be concerned about exploiting my vulnerabilities. Thank you." She nuzzled into the side of her neck, feeling as her girlfriend finally relaxed.
"I'm just glad we didn't upset you somehow."
"You could never." Blake assured her with another peck to the cheek. "And like I said, if either of you had done something I didn't like, I would've said something."
At that time, Yang leaned over her partner, a more serious tone in her voice.
"Yeah. You make sure you do that, alright? No matter what."
"I will," she promised. "But on that note..." Blake released her hold on Weiss and flipped onto her back with a sigh. "I... didn't tell you guys to stop, did I?"
Both Yang and Weiss were equally as surprised and entertained by her declaration. But it didn't take anything more to have them playing along.
"Oh, you're absolutely right!" Weiss murmured. "You never told us to stop."
"Silly us!"
They each curled up on either side of her while Blake reached out to place an arm around both of them. They kissed one of her cheeks each before reaching their hands up to pick up where they'd left off, massaging and scratching her ears.
Their free hands came together over Blake's stomach, Weiss' and Yang's fingers interlocking as they rested their heads on Blake's shoulders to listen to that familiar purr. It only grew louder and louder, providing a private lullaby for just the two of them.
They wished each other soft goodnights, then drifted off together somewhere between warm hugs and happy sighs.
