Chapter 44 The Move

"How are you feeling today, Veronica?" the doctor asked coming into the room and giving the petite blonde a smile.

Veronica grimaced and rubbed her stomach feeling the effects of the lunch she had consumed a mere hour ago.

"I'm ok. Tired and having to pee all of the time mostly." She said. She tried to get comfortable on the table she had to sit on so the doctor could examine her, but any way she sat was more uncomfortable than the last.

"Where's Logan today?" the doctor asked.

"Our teachers actually allowed us to finish the semester early since I'm pregnant and we're moving. He's finishing his last test. I already finished mine." She said trying to ignore the cold gel being put on her stomach.

"It's good that you guys will have the summer to get familiar with taking care of the baby. How many weeks of school do you have left?" the doctor asked concentrating on examining Veronica.

"Well we'd have about a month left, but like I said our teachers allowed us to finish up our coursework early. I think our parents had something to do with it though, since Logan's mom was in the hospital and his dad was accused of murder." Veronica rambled watching the screen.

"Have you guys thought about Lamaze classes or what kind of birth you want?"

Veronica blinked not knowing how to answer the question. They'd barely gotten their things packed for the move. They were finishing up their Sophomore year, and Veronica still had yet to accept that she was leaving her dad. How was she supposed to decide on Lamaze classes or if she wanted a midwife or a water birth?

"It's ok Veronica, I know it's a lot to take in, even for women who have had multiple children. Have you talked to your mother about any of this?"

"She's not around." Veronica said automatically.

The doctor gave her a sympathetic look and Veronica looked away not liking the pity she saw in her eyes.

"Here are some brochures, take it over with Logan. Remember, you only have about two months left. You have time, but you should decide soon. June 30, will come up sooner than you'd expect."

"I've finished the books." Veronica piped in.

The doctor smiled at her and turned back to the screen. "You can see his toenails and fingernails now. See." She said pointing to the screen.

Veronica nodded numbly the fear she had been fighting off increasing tenfold as she realized that there was a person living in her.

"He looks so…" she trailed off biting her tongue on the word 'real.'

"I know it's very overwhelming, even after you have the baby you'll be overwhelmed, but remember millions of woman have done this before. You'll be fine." she reassured the teenager.

Veronica nodded and blinked back her tears. She listened to the doctor begin to tell her what signs she should look for and when she should come to the hospital.

"Alright, if you have any questions don't hesitate to call. I strongly suggest Lamaze classes and talking with Logan about your birthing plan. Also look out for the signs, you're closing in on the finish line, Veronica you need to be aware of what your body is going through. I'll see you in two weeks." The doctor said smiling at her.

Veronica nodded and watched the doctor leave before she began to get dressed. She made an appointment for two weeks and then waddled out of the office. She went to her car and then drove back to the apartment for a nap before Logan came to get her so they could begin moving her small amount of things to the large brand new house.

Lynn had been orchestrating the move. She had hired many people to help and organize the new house since she couldn't do much and Logan was off finishing his classes.

The only things Logan and Veronica had to do were move their belongings into the rooms they had designated as theirs. Lynn had ordered all brand new furniture and had taken her extensive art collection along with a few other things she wanted to keep from the previous house. She had decided to sell a majority of the furniture her and Aaron had picked out together. It wasn't that they needed the money she just wanted to get rid of all reminders of Aaron as soon as possible.

The move had been going on for a few weeks now, but now that a majority of the big items were in the house and the realtor wanted the family out of the estate they were on their last week of moving. Lynn had already moved in fully to the house and signed the paperwork, so it was just up to Logan to finish moving his stuff and Veronica's things into the house.

After school Logan went to the Mars' apartment to find Veronica curled up and sleeping on her bed. He gently touched her shoulder to wake her up.

"Hey." He said when she finally came to.

"Hey. What time is it?" she asked yawning and rubbing her eyes.

"About four. Are you ready to take your stuff over?" Logan asked helping her into a sitting position.

Veronica nodded still groggy from waking up. As they packed up the X-terra she told him about the doctor's appointment and what the doctor said.

"So what do you think about Lamaze?" she asked as they drove over to the new house.

Logan shrugged, "I'm not about to squeeze a baby out."

"But do you think we should do it? I mean, I don't know I how I feel about sitting in a class with a bunch of middle aged woman." Veronica said quietly.

Logan looked over at her at a stoplight and contemplated what she said. "Since when have you cared what anyone has ever thought of you?" he asked giving her a significant look.

She smiled slightly, "So will you do it with me?" she asked shyly.

"If you want me to."

"I do." She said quietly.

Logan smiled and nodded. "Then we'll sign up when we find some classes. What about the birth plan? Have you thought about that yet?"

"Hospital for sure. I'm not about to squeeze a baby out in your mother's house or in a bathtub. Too weird. And I want you right near my head, you are not allowed to see anything below my waist." She said giving him a firm look.

He chuckled, "why not?"

She looked away feeling embarrassed. "Just because." She said shortly not wanting to reveal why she didn't want him to see what was going on down there. She didn't want him to be completely disgusted by her. She knew giving birth could get gross, bloody, and many bodily fluids flowing in excess. She didn't want Logan to see any of that.

"Ok, Veronica, whatever you say." He said pulling up to the gate and putting in the code. They drove through the gate and pulled up behind a moving truck and some other cars.

They walked in together to find several movers in the house along with Mrs. Navarro and Weevil.

"What's Weevil doing here?" Logan asked looking over at the PCHer who was carrying a box up the stairs.

Veronica shrugged and looked around the house that was slowly coming together. She walked over to Mrs. Navarro who was directing some of the movers around.

"Honestly, if I didn't tell them what to do everything would be a mess in my kitchen." Mrs. Navarro said spotting Veronica and coming over to her. She gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and then ordered a mover to put a box near the cupboard.

"As nice as Mrs. Echolls is she's never stepped foot in here." Mrs. Navarro added finally turning back to Veronica.

"Is Eli helping with the move?" Veronica asked curiously.

Mrs. Navarro nodded. "Mrs. Echolls told him she'd give him money if he helped. Why don't you go put him and your boyfriend to good use." She said winking at Veronica.

Veronica smiled and nodded moving back towards Logan who was quietly talking to Weevil. When she came up they immediately stopped and gave her a look.

"You're helping?" she asked curiously.

Weevil nodded, "figured after you helped me and my boys out it was the least I could do. Plus you're pregnant, V, pregnant chicks shouldn't move their own stuff." He said tossing a glare at Logan who returned it in kind.

Veronica rolled her eyes, "thanks. Come on I'll show you the stuff." She said leading Weevil out to Logan's car as Logan went upstairs so he could direct his own stuff to the designated areas.

"So how's it going with you and the white boy?" Weevil asked as she opened Logan's car where her stuff was.

Veronica smiled, "Good. It's my last week at home."

"How's the kid?" he asked looking at her stomach.

"Healthy and growing." She said watching as he took a bag. She grabbed her suitcase and waved Weevil away when he made a sound to help her.

"How are you dealing with everything?" she asked kindly.

Weevil shrugged, "more things I don't want to talk about." He said shortly.

She nodded and continued rolling her suitcase up the stairs.

"Hey, uh, Veronica." Weevil began grabbing her attention.

She looked back at him curiously. "Yeah?"

"I uh…I mean, you still help people, right?" he asked cautiously.

Veronica frowned, "yeah, I mean, I haven't lately only because of everything that's been going on, but yeah generally."

Weevil nodded accepting the answer and turning back to walk into the house.

"Is there something you need help with?" she asked making him stop and turn around to regard her.

Weevil looked away and then sighed. "Maybe, it's just…just gang stuff. I mean, you're pregnant I don't want to get you involved. I have a feeling the white boy would kill me."

Veronica smiled slightly, "probably, but I don't think that would stop you from asking. Is there anything you need help with?" she asked again.

Weevil regarded her for a minute before beginning to walk back to the house. "I'll let you know." He said vaguely before going into the house.

Veronica watched him go and then continued after him. It took no time at all to finish unpacking Logan's car and organizing everything in the room. She didn't get another chance to question Weevil, but she made a mental note to ask again in a few weeks. She wondered what was going on, but she had other things to worry about, like the baby coming.

Once they unpacked and put all the boxes in their designated places Logan drove her back to the apartment and dropped her off. She was surprised to see her dad already there with dinner ready. Tonight they were supposed to have dinner since she'd be moving into the Echolls' mansion within the next few days.

Keith was setting the table when she came in.

"How was moving?" he asked.

"Good. I have a few of my clothes and things I need until I officially move in this weekend." She said feeling nostalgic for leaving her dad.

Keith nodded and watched as she squeezed herself into a chair.

"And you're sure you're going to be ok over there?" Keith asked.

She nodded and gave him a wistful smile. "It'll be fine, right? I mean, I can always call you if I need you." she said trying to wave his concern away.

He smiled, "yeah, honey you can always count on me."

"Thanks." She said before helping herself to some food. They ate dinner and made small talk. When they were finished Veronica began to do the dishes her mind turning to a question she had yet to ask her dad. It had been weighing on her mind for some time, but with all of the events going on she had yet to ask.

"Did you know about Jake and mom?" she blurted out surprising Keith.

"Why do you ask that?"

Veronica was silent for awhile before mustering up the courage to tell him. "Duncan told me I was his…his sister, but I got a paternity test and I'm not." She added hastily.

Keith smiled sadly and set down the dish he was drying. "I know. I mean, I know I'm your father."

"How could mom do that?" Veronica asked staring down at her sudsy hands.

"Your mom…she's a complicated woman, Veronica. Even if you weren't mine biologically I would still be your father." He said quietly.

"I know, I just can't believe mom would do this. I mean, after everything I've seen Logan go through and having a baby myself… I can't understand why she did what she did." She admitted softly.

"I can't tell you why she did what she did because I'm not her, but I can tell you that I love you very much and I'll always be here for you. I'm your father, Veronica, for better or worse." He said kissing her on the top of her forehead before picking the plate back up to continue drying it.

"Do you know where she is?" she asked curiously.

"No."

She sighed and picked up another dish. "I'm afraid I'll end up being like her." She revealed.

Keith looked over at her a sad look in his eyes. "We don't know what the future brings, Veronica, but I do know that you are very much your own person. If you don't want to be like her you won't. Just know that whatever kind of parent you envision, you won't be perfect. I tried to keep you safe and look how it ended up. You're a smart girl, honey, but you need to know that with becoming a parent it's a lot more than just being smart. When you become a parent you feel this need to protect your child and you want to give them the best, but sometimes life has other plans. The one thing I can tell you is do the best you can and love you're child." He said calmly.

"But what if it's not enough? What if I mess up?"

"You're human. You make mistakes. I've made mistakes, so has your mother, but that doesn't mean we love you any less. I think, for what it's worth, that you and Logan will both do a fine job as long as you commit yourself. I know it's too early to be doing this and your life will never be like how you want it to be, but just remember you aren't your mother." He said heavily.

"You'll help me right?" she whispered feeling ashamed.

"Of course, honey. And you have Logan, Lynn, and your friends. I know things seem crazy right now, but once you meet the little guy you'll understand what I'm talking about. You'll never want to leave him once you meet him and you'll want to protect him from everything." He said setting the dish down and grabbing another.

"Promise?"

He smiled and nodded, "I promise."

She gulped and grabbed the last dish feeling a mixture of happiness for talking to her father and more nerves for what he'd told her. There were only a few weeks left after all.
