Has it started raining Doctor Who?
"So Doctor where are we going now 'cause I'd like to see something alien now, something real exciting." Rose said with a bright smile as she played with her long blonde hair. The Doctor smiled smugly and tugged on his leather jacket.
"Oh so she's all big and brave now, few adventures under her belt and she thinks she's ready to see the universe." Rose smirked and leaned over the console, lightly fingering the controls. The Doctor felt his smile dip a bit at her thoughtless, at her human actions.
"No Rose, don't do that." Once she pulled back his smile returned full force. "So what sort of aliens would you like to see? Give me an idea and we'll go there straight away. Won't even stop for the latest episode of Eastenders." She was beaming again and made a real show of thinking hard.
"Um I don't know, somewhere exciting, like-like Mars or something." The Doctor quirked an eyebrow.
"Mars? All of time and space at your disposal and that's the best you can come up with?" She pouted as she searched through her very limited knowledge of space, searching for something that would impress him. The Doctor kept up his light smile and tried to brush off his irrational sense of disappointment he felt. Rose had only just begun travelling with him, there was no way he could expect her to rattle of planet names like an old pro and yet some lonely part of him kept hoping she would.
It was times like these that it was most obvious that Rose was just a human despite her Time Lord appearance. He could delude himself sometimes, the way she bantered with him or faced a monster, he could pretend, just for a quarter of a second, that he was traveling with his family or one of his old Academy friends. He could pretend that he wasn't the last of his species and that he was just wandering about with another Time Lord just like in the old days.
Of course the illusion was always quickly shattered. She'd ask a silly question about what the buttons did on the TARDIS or express confusion about some well-known alien customs and expose her innate humanness. His delusion would be shattered and Gallifrey would once again start burning in his mind.
Oh don't get him wrong, he loved humans. They were always the best passengers on his ship, always curious and clever and terribly good for him. Humanity, he felt, brought out the best in him, always have and always would. But it didn't mean it hurt any less, seeing her there with her smile and her life and he couldn't help but think that any one of his friends or children could have had that life she wielded so carelessly. Blimey she looked old enough to be one of his own daughters...
So being the terrible old man he's secretly always has been, the Doctor had begun to use his latest human companion as a sort of proxy. He would watch her gallivanting around the TARDIS blasting her awful music and he could maybe think of some of his Gallifreyan friends who'd been fond of Earth music as well. The he'd close his eyes and imagine a better time. He knew he had to stop eventually if he really wanted to keep this girl around. No one deserved to treated like that, especially not a young kid who didn't understand half the hurt he felt.
Rose Tyler was here and they were not and that's just how it was. Perhaps one day he would learn to accept that fact and come to like Rose Tyler for herself and not for her outward appearance. Maybe one day he'd let go of this fantasy of his that another Time Lord would drop from the sky and give him some proper company.
"I think," Rose began slowly. "I'd like to go deep within the erm Andromeda galaxy. I'd like to see a star super nova, I saw it on the telly once and I've always wondered what that would look like. Can we do that Doctor, is that good enough for you?" She asked, trying to appear disinterested but really looking for approval. Humans, funny little humans, so very different from the Time Lords. He just had to remember that it wasn't always a bad thing.
"Oh good choice, I haven't seen a super nova in well, it's been at least thirty or forty years. Andromeda here we come and I can think of several good spots if you don't mind me picking the restaurant." She laughed as the TARDIS whipped through the Time Vortex, grasping the console like many Time Lords before her had done. He smiled again though it felt a little more genuine. She wasn't a Time Lord and she wasn't just a human, she was Rose Tyler, she was the companion of the Doctor and he thinks he just might be starting to like her.
Sorry it's a day late, I wasn't near my computer much at all yesterday. Thank goodness it's Friday. Anyways I realized I hadn't posted a good ole Nine shot in awhile so here we go. This is sort of a companion piece to another shot I did, um number 25. Successors which looks into how the Doctor probably views humans before the Time War. This is now after the Time War and, since humans and Time Lords look pretty much identical, I feel Nine might have had some issues with that and decided to explore that a little bit. Poor Nine, I don't put him in a lot of good situations. I should write one where he's happy. I'll take note of that.
