Chapter 49
Fear and dread filled a very familiar garden. Sitting with Jareth's head in her lap as he mumbled, Sarah watched as sweat poured off of him.
He hadn't released her hand. There had even been a moment his gripped tightened. What was happening inside his mind? Something had to be going on that neither she nor the Labyrinth knew.
Jareth's grip on her hand tightened again. Gently she reapplied the water soaked cloth to his forehead.
"He isn't getting any better." Sarah looked from his face to the Spirit of the Labyrinth, who was pacing nearby.
The Labyrinth sighed. "What am I missing? There has to be something I'm missing."
"I think his fever has gotten worst."
The Labyrinth walked over to Sarah and Jareth and placed her hand on his forehead. "I think you're right. The water from the fountain doesn't seem to be helping at all."
Her hand slowly fell away. "I don't know what to do."
Tears began to fall down Sarah's cheeks. "Does he need strength or power? He has to need something you haven't thought of."
The Labyrinth scooted away. "I truly don't know, Sarah."
Sarah hung her head over Jareth's face, allowing her tears to fall on his face. Had they truly no hope? They still had to have hope. She refused to give up on him. Leaning closer, she whispered. "You have to tell me how to help you."
Sarah glanced up at the Labyrinth as she leaned against the fountain, clearly distraught. What could they be missing? What tiny but important thing could it be?
Pushing a strand of hair out of her face, Sarah hiccuped. There wasn't anything more she could do. She didn't have any magic. She was just...an...ordinary...girl.
She quickly raised her head. "What can I do?"
Turning to face her, the Labyrinth frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Sarah took a deep breath. "I think I can help him, but I'm not sure how."
Shaking her head, the Labyrinth walked back towards her. "Sarah, there isn't anything we can do."
"If we don't try something not only is his life in danger but yours and all the citizens of the Underground."
Slowly, the Labyrinth nodded. "You finally realized what truly is at stake."
"There has to be something I can do." Sarah cradled Jareth's head in her hand slightly.
The Labyrinth took a breath. "There might be, but I can't promise your safety."
Sarah nodded. "I understand, but if there is a chance to save him and everyone else, we have to try."
The Labyrinth knelt down beside Sarah. "Remember things aren't always what they seem, Sarah. You can't let your guard down."
Sarah frowned. "You know more than you're saying."
"Even I have rules I must follow, Child." She held her hand out to Sarah. "Are you ready?"
Slowly Sarah placed her in the Labyrinth's. Then the Spirit placed her other hand on top of Sarah's. "Close your eyes."
Closing her eyes, Sarah frowned.
"Forgive me, Child."
Suddenly, Sarah felt sick. She wasn't sure what her body wanted. She felt nauseated and her stomach was doing flips. Before her closed eyes, colors began flashing. Sarah could feel herself beginning to fall over, but she could also feel someone or something steadying her. Then she began to become exhausted.
Sarah could feel her eyelids fluttering as she lost consciousness or so she thought to do this.
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX
It was a world between. The damn spell had trapped him in a world between life and death, with a representation of the damn thing that looked like him.
This wasn't something he was expecting. Tynan had been more powerful than he had thought.
The false him was smirking. For once in his life, he wanted to actually slap his own face. Could he do this, alone? Who would be willing to come here to help him? Did anyone know exactly where he was? Who would be strong enough?
"Are you going to just stare at me?"
Jareth glared at the falsehood. He really wanted to punch him.
The false him frowned. "Someone else is here."
The copy sneered as a figure began to emerge from the darkness.
No. The Labyrinth wouldn't send her. She could be trapped here. Trapped in this darkened hell was not something he wanted for himself much less her.
The false Jareth smirked as Sarah slowly came into view. "Well, this will be fun."
Jareth tried to move towards her but found his legs were frozen in place.
"You can't move, Idiot. My creator made sure you would be trapped completely."
Sarah frowned but quickly ran to his side. "I can though." She gave Jareth a smile. "Ah, hi."
"What are you doing here? Do you have any idea where we are?"
"Ah, no. I came to help."
Jareth almost groaned when he realized he couldn't even move his arms. "Do you know how much danger you've put yourself in?"
"It doesn't matter. You're pulling power from the Labyrinth, which is weakening her. Tynan was trying to destroy the entire Underground, not just you."
Jareth frowned. Could he pull too much strength from the Labyrinth? If she became too weak, then yes the Underground as a whole would decay. The perfect revenge.
"So you've discovered my creator's true plan. You won't be able to do anything."
Sarah smirked at the falsehood. "That's where Tynan made a mistake."
The falsehood frowned. "What do you mean, Chit?"
"He underestimated me." Sarah glanced at Jareth.
"Precious, I don't think you see what's going on."
Sarah shook her head. "Tynan's already underestimated me, once. There has to be something I can do."
False Jareth laughed. "You silly, Chit. Do you truly think you can stop me? I'm killing him and the entire Underground."
Sarah smiled sweetly. "Oh, I'm going to enjoy this."
"Precious, ..." Jareth stopped as he noticed Sarah was glowing slightly. "What's going on?"
"Huh?" Sarah frowned as the flow around her grew brighter.
"Precious, you're glowing."
Looking down at herself, Sarah raised her hands slightly. "What the...?"
"So what if the chit is glowing. I'll continue my creator's orders."
Sarah glared at him as she grabbed hold of Jareth's forearm. The glow slowly expanded to surround him as well.
False Jareth sneered at her. "What are you doing?" He marched measly towards them. "Release him, you silly chit."
Sarah smirked. "Make me."
The false Jareth stopped within easy reach, breathing hard. "You stupid mortal."
The glow became brighter around the couple. Sarah glanced at Jareth. "Seems he underestimated me again."
Jareth smiled. "Seems so."
False Jareth reached towards them. As his hands came near them, they began to turn a bright red. He pulled them back immediately as a door appeared nearby.
"What did you do, you chit?" False Jareth yelled as his entire body began to turn red and then black.
Sarah turned slightly towards Jareth. "Try moving I think that's our way out."
Jareth nodded as he moved his stiff legs, walking towards the door. "We best hurry before he tries something again." He pulled her towards the door with his returning strength.
"You won't win. My creator will succeed."
Jareth looked over his shoulder at False Jareth he fell to his knee. "I doubt that since he's now banished to the Aboveground."
False Jareth's eyes widened as his face began to darken like his body as Jareth lead Sarah into the blinding light beyond the door.
