Chapter 52: Truth and trust
Later that night Rebecca woke up – she didn't know what had woken her but she had one of those strange feelings that something wasn't quite right. Somehow she couldn't put her finger on it but something was making her feel edgy. The room appeared to be perfectly quiet, there was only the low almost inaudible sound of Raphael's deep breaths indicating that he was fast asleep. She didn't want to disturb him but at the same time she didn't want to be awake on her own so guiltily she poked him with a finger and ever so quietly whispered his name until he let out a groan and rolled over so that they were face to face – she could just about see his lovely green eyes in the darkness. She felt a large hand slip down to her waist and pull her closer until her tummy was directly in contact with him.
"You okay babe?" he whispered; she could feel his breath warm on her skin – it made her whole body tingle.
"Sorry to wake you but I can't sleep"
"Is it the baby?" his tone indicated a rising panic and concern.
"Gosh no" she instinctively touched her stomach "I just couldn't switch off - you know how it is.."
"Oh I do...Let's see if I can help with that" His second hand sliding down to her rear and giving it a firm squeeze: "Do you know how hot you are?" he murmured. She caught her breath and found herself leaning in towards him; their mouths meeting in need. The hand that had formally been on her backside was now making its way up her spine, inch by inch gently caressing her sensitive skin whilst the other fell between her legs touching her in such a way that she couldn't help but let out a moan of pleasure and arch herself further towards him.
"You like that" he whispered huskily, planting tiny kisses down her neck and across shoulders; causing her to shudder.
"You know I do"
She could feel his excitement rising – he was making it quite clear he wanted her – wanted to make love. But just as quick as it began – she stopped it.
"We can't – not after..."
His hands were suddenly off her and he moved away as if he'd been scalded.
"Sorry.." she whispered.
"No, I should be sorry babe – I didn't think about it. Well, I didn't think with my head.."
She snuggled up to him – even though they couldn't be as physical as they both wanted she still needed contact and affection. It was weird for her because it was not something she had ever been used to until Leonardo. Raphael wrapped his arms around her and allowed her to lie alongside him – she could feel that he was obviously aroused which in turn made her desire sky rocket. With everything that had happened with the baby she just couldn't risk anything too physical. The more the child inside her grew - the more protective she felt.
Leonardo hid in his room, it would be better that no-one knew what he was doing after all he would only get teased by Mikey and Donnie and there was more than a ninety-nine per cent chance that he would get beaten up by Raphael. Even Rebecca herself would probably have a go. So, no, he couldn't risk it, he couldn't risk any of them finding out.
It wasn't like he was a pervert or some sort of weird creepy guy – he was just watching. And it just so happened that he was watching his ex. Not in a bad way, if anything he was quite convinced he was doing a good thing. He was protecting her. Keeping an eye on her and the baby.
He hadn't wanted to watch his brother slobbering all over her but thankfully it appeared that she had stopped it. Leonardo found himself wondering why this was – before he actually realised that it was the baby he had found himself toying with the idea that maybe she was going off Raphael. At least that's what he hoped.
Last time he had been at April's he had rigged up a couple of Donnie's cameras so that he could get the bedroom and the main living space. He had told himself that he was only going to do it for a couple of days just to make sure she was okay but he knew he was kidding himself. It had become rather addictive. He could see how humans could get hooked on reality television.
Sitting up in his bed he had borrowed Donnie's laptop and was now watching Rebecca and Raphael sleeping. He knew there was no point to this action but he couldn't stop doing it. He was glad he didn't have a laptop of his own – if he did then he probably would be on it 24/7. He hoped Donatello wouldn't go looking for it before he could return it to his lab. He also hoped that Donatello wouldn't hack the programme. He had saved it under something seemingly innocent and put a number of levels on it so it wasn't as simple as just double clicking on the icon. If he made it that simple he would be risking Mikey finding out which would be disastrous in more ways than one.
He leaned closer to the screen and brought her up closer – he wished Raphael wasn't there and that he was there instead with his arms around her, holding her, feeling the warmth of her body and smelling her hair. Her hair always smelt fresh. He missed her. Shell, he missed her so much...it really hurt...
He knew something had changed between them, somehow they had more of a connection and that was how he was able to talk to her using telepathy. No-one else could. Not even Raphael. Not even Splinter! He frowned; on reflection, that was a little weird.
He also got the feeling that she wasn't telling him the entire story and that something else was going on but he couldn't think what. She certainly hadn't told anyone else about the fact that they could talk using telepathy. Raphael would have made his feelings plain and clear if he knew and it probably involve some sort of beat down.
Leo closed the image down and put the lap top on the floor by his bed. He set his alarm so he could be up before Donnie and return the borrowed item to his brother's lab. The image of Rebecca was still so clear in his mind he decided he wasn't quite ready to go to sleep just yet...
"Breakfast oh brother of mine!…" Michelangelo popped his head round the corner of the doorway to Leo's room. Leonardo shot up – damn, the alarm hadn't gone off! "This isn't like you.." continued Mikey setting a drink by his bed "Must have been all those dreams you were having – honestly brother, you sounded like you were being tortured"
Leonardo felt his cheeks flush red "What are you talking about Mikey.." he swung his legs out of the bed the other way and checked everything was in it's rightful position.
"You were groaning and moaning like a poor little animal in pain – I nearly got up to see what was wrong"
Leonardo's face was now so flushed he had to get out and away from his brother's persistent prodding "Don't know what you are on about Mikey, I slept fine.." He walked out only to be greeted by Donatello who in turn nipped past him and snatched up his lap top from beside Leo's bed "So, it was you!" he announced, checking it over.
"It's fine" replied Leonardo trying to do and hide in the bathroom
"You okay Leo? You look bit pink.." Donatello suddenly looked concerned.
"I don't think he's very well" Michelangelo stood there with his arms crossed "He had a rough night. He was moaning and groaning.."
"Yes thank you Mikey" interjected Leonardo directing his younger brother back to the kitchen. Donatello was smirking at him "What?" asked Leo in an innocent tone, this was not going well.
"You know what.." replied Donnie, crossing his arms "Have you been surfing for illegal channels Leo, thought that was Raph's trick, if this computer has picked up any viruses, I will.."
"It won't because I didn't!"
Leonardo felt so humiliated; his cheeks were burning. He was only too glad that both Raphael and Rebecca were not at the lair. Now that would have been so embarrassing.
"Do you think you can manage some toast?" came Michelangelo's voice from the kitchen.
"For the last time Mikey, I am not ILL!" he shouted back, finally making it to the bathroom where he could hide in peace and get the colour out of his cheeks.
Today was the day that Rebecca was meeting up with Donatello – he had cracked the code and said he had some very enlightening things to tell her. Truthfully that had made Rebecca feel nervous. She felt vulnerable because at this point he knew more than she did. In fact she had told so many lies she had forgotten who knew what and what was real and what was make believe. Yes it was finally catching up with her and she knew it was probably what she deserved.
Raphael had already headed back to the lair to train with his brothers and he had woken her up which she guessed was some sort of revenge for last night. As she watched him leave she flopped back on the covers her mind awash with thought after thought. She glanced over to the mirror and wondered would she ever see the Kelly-thing again; she didn't really know why she had gone – perhaps it was a power thing.
After she had washed, dressed and had breakfast with April and Casey she tied her hair up in a pony and left the apartment. Her phone rang suddenly; it was Detective Houston. She wondered if his mind was awash with thoughts too.
"Hi Detective, how are you?" She tried to sound positive when in fact she probably sounded more like an over exited lunatic.
"I'm good thanks Rebecca and please, call me Nick"
She paused, it seemed wrong and somewhat disrespectful to call a high level cop by his actual name but if that's what he wanted, who was she to argue.
"Look, I have a proposition and don't worry I will be right there with you"
She wasn't sure she liked the sound of that – just where was he going with this..?
Crossing the road Rebecca stood on the corner and turned her back on the bustling morning commuters "Ok, I'm listening" she replied
"Stephen Baker wants to meet with us, he says he wants to give an update on things and in his words 'thinks it would be better if you were there' and I'm inclined to agree. You know this guy much better than I do meaning you can give me feedback after the meeting"
Rebecca could feel her face change from smiley to one of sour disappointment – she really didn't like or trust Mr Baker – 'ex' Uncle Stephen.
"When..?" she asked, feeling drained already.
If they were to meet it would definitely be on her terms and certainly not this morning.
"2 o'clock, here at Headquarters, you think you can do that? I understand you will feel apprehensive.."
She didn't really know how he would understand that..after all Stephen Baker was her ex-uncle. Though actually he had never been an uncle in the first place – she had given him that as an honorary position because he had been so good to her and her father and he had been trustworthy. Had.
That was in the past.
"Ok, count me in, so long as you're there too"
She really didn't want to meet with him on her own, it's not that she didn't believe in her own strength but she rather thought she may end up knocking him out.
Once underground she felt another type of tension building up and this was not helped by the appearance of Leonardo as she entered the lair. As their eyes locked something bizarre seemed to pass between them, she felt it and was almost sure he felt it too as his eyes narrowed as if trying to bore into her very soul. She hated this. Without encouragement her cheeks burnt red and after popping a hand up to Mikey she rushed over to Donnie's lab, flung open the door and shut it just as aggressively placing her back up against it. Donatello lifted up his goggles and then removed them once he realised it was her.
"You okay?" he asked, taking in her flushed appearance.
She nodded "Yep, fine and dandy, why?"
He paused and put a hand to his chin "You just look a little flustered that's all"
She had to get him off topic "What do you expect? I'm wondering what you're going to tell me that 'tis all"
At this point she began to panic as to what he did actually know – what if he knew everything? What if he knew she was lying..? Again...
"Well, take a seat, there are some very interesting things but I have it out here.." he touched a few keys "for you to read….so take your time"
Sitting on the seat that Donatello offered her she pulled herself closer to the screen. They had replied. They really had replied. For all the respect and care that they showed her father they had replied. She thanked her daddy for this.
They appeared to know much more about her than she ever did. She was mesmorised by all of it.
Donatello left her alone in his lab and instructed the rest of them to 'stay out' until she was done - which irritated Raphael but he reluctantly agreed.
They talked of her father, his biological link, and then they talked of her mother – her birth mother. She had a birth mother. She had been born, not made: born
