Chapter 50: Resurreccions

Leva started to tremble. She saw everything that the Demons she had imprisoned had done. She felt it from the perspectives of their victims.

She even felt what Baro had to go through. It was torture, especially since she knew perfectly well what he had to suffer. Why he became a Void.

"You have one flaw, Leva," Onairo said. "You used to be human. You may deny it, but there is still a part of you that has a small trace of a human heart, and that makes you vulnerable to me."

She ground her teeth, the sensation not only attacking her mind, but also her body, and the pain she felt was real, not an illusion.

She at least didn't have the curse of having suffered while she was still a human. But that still didn't prevent her from feeling the pain. She had imprisoned and killed many Demons, and that was all the Demon needed to inflict pain on her.

"Had enough yet, Envy?" Onairo taunted.

"Step away from her," a cold voice demanded.

The Demon spun around, his eyes growing wide, before they narrowed as he smirked.

"Zaya."

Yumichika panted.

It would seem the ability to hold back a cero was no laughing matter. As a Soul Reaper, he had experienced several times just how strong they could be, and how much destruction they caused.

The cero yearned to destroy, but he had to restrain it. It was a continuous action of push and pull.

But the more he held onto it, the more he understood it.

The ceros he had witnessed had all been spheres or beams of energy. His ceros were somewhat solid, but still the same as energy. They were like shards of glass wrapped around light. The cero was sharp, and it was designed to pierce.

And he realised that if he only focussed on that, he would be able to truly master Cero Domina, since it was already semi-solid. He just had to work around it.

And he could feel Zeron's approval. There was just one more step he had to take.

He had to give his cero an appropriate name.

"I've had enough," Sui-Feng said, throwing the book aside.

Rith arched an eyebrow, looking at her.

"Fine, I get it," the captain said. "You've done a lot and been through a lot, all for the sake of defeating the Demons. Now could you please take me back? Omaeda's probably making a mess of my squad again."

He inwardly rolled his eyes. He knew that really, she was just embarrassed that she couldn't find one horrible thing that he had done, that would cause her to mistrust him.

It was a hard pill to swallow for someone like her.

Zaya glared at the Demon, her eyes pitch black. She also allowed herself to focus on Leva, in order to free the younger Diablos from the pain the Demon was inflicting on her.

"So, Pride herself," Onairo said. "I was wondering how long it would take before I saw you again. Though I must admit, it's sooner than I expected."

Her eyes narrowed. He was trying to attack her mind and put her in the same state as Leva, but she had a similar ability, and she could create a shield for herself. Then there was the fact that she had grown a lot stronger in the last three thousand years.

"Really?" she said. "Because I should have come a lot sooner."

He glanced towards Leva before focussing on her again.

"It would seem you've grown stronger," he said. "Your shield is quite potent, if you don't mind me saying."

"I'll take it as a compliment," she said. "So, how'd you get out of your cage anyway?"

"There was a hole, and I took the opportunity. Pevun'ya had passed on the information he had gathered when you killed him."

"I wasn't directly involved," she said. "But you should know that I will not hesitate to do the same thing to you."

"Oh really? The way I see it, there are far too many mortals around. If you even release a fraction of your power, there is no way anyone would be able to survive."

She smirked.

"You forget that we can create a little something called a Negaccion," she said.

His eyes widened, and so did her smirk.

She had him.

Zeron looked towards Yumichika, who let all of the ceros sizzle away.

"Do you have a name for it yet?" the Diablos asked.

"Yes," the Vizard responded.

"What is it?"

"Mirror Cero Shards."

"A little long, don't you think? Just call it 'Broken Mirror'. The names don't need to have the word 'cero' in it. None of our moves are their original names, anyway."

"Why's that?"

"Do you have any idea how many languages have died out? We rename our abilities constantly."

"I see."

"Now, I'm going to have to teach you one other thing. This is going to be tricky."

"I'm ready for it."

Leva entered the shop, trembling slightly. Those that saw her were instantly at her side.

"What's wrong?" Rose asked.

"Demon," she said. "Zaya's fighting it now."

Rose froze, remembering what the Demon of the previous day was capable of. He saw that the Diablos had trouble.

"Will she be able to handle it?" Rose asked.

"Depends on the Resurreccion," Leva said. "If she goes into either the sixth or seventh, then there's a good chance it won't survive. But Onairo is stronger than Pevun'ya was. A lot stronger."

"We should help her," Ikkaku said.

"No," she said. "She created a Negaccion. Right now, only Zeron would be able to go in. If you want to help her, he'd have to take you. But I wouldn't recommend it. Unless you want to relive every horrible moment of your life, and the victims of those that you had brought to justice."

"In other words," Ulquiorra said, "you would experience the pain of every Hollow you've killed, as well as the pain of all their victims. Their every emotional pain. Every horrible memory."

Szayelapporro and Ylfordt shared a glance, knowing what that would mean for the two of them. Nnoitra and Luppi also shared a glance.

"Will Zaya be able to handle it?" Shinji asked.

"We'd know if she couldn't," Leva said.

Adesto narrowed his eyes from his position in the shadows.

So, Oriano can be useful. He wasn't bluffing when he said he would be able to keep the Diablos busy.

He was also pleased when he realised that not even the Diablos was aware of their presence. This could definitely work in their favour.

His eyes focussed on the Arrancars. They would have to deal with them at one point or another, but for now he focussed on two specific Arrancars. He could feel Delgato shifting in anticipation, and they would have to move as soon as possible, in case Zaya was truly able to handle the Demon.

They had to move while they still had an advantage.

Zaya smirked. She had something that she didn't have three thousand years ago.

A seventh Resurreccion.

"You're very brave, choosing to fight me on your own," Onairo said. "But once I find a chink in your armour, you're going to fall under my spell anyway."

"You're going to have to find one first," she said, withdrawing her sword. "Bask, Lucifer. Resurreccion, Sexta Etapa!"

Zeron shuddered.

He had released Yumichika's inner Void and his Zanpakuto, and the three were sparring with each other, none really on the same side. It was always interesting seeing three-way fights.

But that was not why he shuddered. Zaya had released her sixth Resurreccion, and it was always bad when she did that. The rest of the Diablos could experience everything that was happening in the twisted reality, where it was hard to distinguish what was real, and what wasn't. And that was without Zaya doing anything.

Well, he certainly didn't feel sorry for Onairo. He was getting what he deserved.

He was alone among the Squad 2 barracks. Hopefully, Sui-Feng wouldn't be so mistrustful, or at least not openly so.

"So, Zaya released her sixth Resurreccion?" he muttered to himself. "Serves him right."

Baro chuckled, and it caught the attention of Karuno.

"What has you so amused?" he asked.

"Zaya released her sixth Resurreccion," Baro explained. "I really don't want to be in that Demon's shoes right now."

"I've never seen that Resurreccion. What's it like?"

Baro plucked a hair from his head and handed it to the Arrancar. After a few moments Karuno's eyes widened.

"That is impressive," he said. "I don't want to have to go against something like that."

"And it isn't even her final form."

Onairo growled. He had seen this form before, and he knew that it was hard to fight.

Everything was dark. The ground was dark, the buildings were dark, even the rolling mist was dark. There was not a single trace of light to be seen.

This was Zaya's power. Darkness. Pure, untouched darkness. And the darkness was her.

That was Zaya's trump card. Become one with the darkness.

He saw a figure in the darkness, and knew that it was Zaya. Her hair, darker than black, her skin dark, her eyes dark holes. She wore a dress made from the darkness.

If he wasn't a Demon, he wouldn't be able to see her. But he was a creature born from darkness, and was used to it. But so was his opponent.

The mist rolled over him gently, and he hissed at the pain.

Everything that the darkness touched was her weapon to use. And the darkness touched everything.

He tried to create light to counteract the darkness, but it would not go farther than his skin. He created a sword for himself and lunged at the figure of the Diablos…

…The darkness was misleading. It wasn't her. Just like the hand at his throat wasn't her. Just like the one slashing with a blade wasn't her.

No, she was all of it. She was all around. Every shadow. And in a place where there is no light, could shadows exist? It was darkness, nothing more, nothing less.

But darkness is both more and less.

This form was made to torture and kill. But so was he.

He just needed to buy time.

He needed Zaya to take a single form in the darkness.

The Phoenix of Death.

Ylfordt sighed, going towards the room of the Arrancars. There was nothing they could do, and he wanted to sleep.

Delgato grinned. Ylfordt was separating from the rest.

He nudged the other two Sinners, and they nodded, following the Arrancar.

Zaya smirked as she saw the Demon shift into its true form.

It was also a being of darkness, almost canine in appearance. But she wasn't worried.

She had the upper hand.

Her Resurreccion was a force to be reckoned with. Not even she knew the boundaries of the darkness, which is why she always uses a Negaccion. She couldn't risk the chance that her prey might slip out of her boundary, even if she herself didn't know the limits.

Then there was also the seventh release to keep in mind.

Zeron was working with Yumichika to release his limits. Since Leva no longer had to deal with the Demon, he removed the time constraints. There was no longer something that required his attention outside his own Negaccion.

And now she was doing what Onairo liked to do with his victims.

Playing with his mind.

Ylfordt sighed as he lay on his futon.

His eyes suddenly snapped open. Something was very, very wrong.

He looked around the room but could not find anything the matter. So he stood and made his way to the door.

Just as he reached out his hand he felt a hand place itself over his mouth, and his wrist was grabbed. He saw as something invisible seemed to take shape. A hand grasping his wrist.

And he felt himself tense and grow cold when he heard that familiar voice.

"Not so fast. You're coming with us."

Zaya smirked, sending the fog to attack the Demon.

It was fun. He didn't know where she was, or which part of the darkness was her. And now, for the main event…

She frowned when she saw him return to the form of an Arrancar, and she was suspicious when she saw that he was smirking.

He used his ability to bypass the Diablos to escape the Negaccion.

She knew that if she herself left, he would no longer be anywhere to be found. She released her Resurreccion, and tried to look ahead, but he managed to prevent that.

Something was seriously wrong.

Yumichika frowned, and so did his Void and Ruri'iro Kujaku.

All three of them felt an overwhelming urge. A single name begging to be spoken by all of them.

"Take flight, Kujaku Blanca!"

Szayelapporro entered their room, expecting to see Ylfordt there. But the elder Granz was nowhere to be found.

He was worried. Ylfordt wouldn't leave, not when Leva had warned them against a Demon…

His eyes widened.

"LEVA!"

Ylfordt looked up at Aizen, trembling slightly.

This was not good at all.

"Hello Ylfordt," Aizen said. "So glad you could join us."
