'The scarecrow climbed off its cross?' Sam asked on loud speaker with Dean and I
'I'm telling you. Burkesville, Indiana. Fun town' Dean muttered sarcastically
'It didn't kill the couple, did it?' Sam asked
'No. We can cope without you; you know' Dean joked
'So something must be animating it. A spirit' Sam suggested
'No, it's more than a spirit. It's a god. A pagan god, anyway' I explained as Dean drove.
'What makes you say that?' Sam asked as Dean looked at me questioningly as well.
'The annual cycle of its killings and the fact that the victims are always a man and a woman...' I started to explain
'Like some kind of fertility rite. And you should see the locals, the way they treated this couple. Fattening them up like a Christmas turkey' Dean added in realisation.
'The last meal. Given to a sacrificial victims' Sam stated
'Yeah, I'm thinking a ritual sacrifice to appease some pagan god' I explained
'So a god possess the scarecrow…' Sam started to say
'And the scarecrow takes it sacrifice' Dean finished
'And for another year, the crops won't wilt and disease won't spread' I added
'Know which god you're dealing with?' Sam asked
'Nope, not yet' I said
'Well you figure out what it is, you can figure out a way to kill it' Sam explained
'I know, we're actually on our way to a local community college' Dean said
'Because I told you to go there. You had no idea why' I joked as Sam laughed
'I got an appointment with a professor' I added
'You see; I don't need my trust sidekick geek boy to do all the research. I've got my trusty sidekick…' Dean started to tease when I wacked him in the arm.
'Don't finish that sentence' I warned
'You know, if you're hinting you need my help, just ask' Sam said grinning
'I'm not hinting anything' Dean said and I glared at him,
'Actually… uh… I want you to know… I mean, don't think…' Dean started too stuttered
'Yeah. I'm sorry too' Sam said as I rolled my eyes.
'Kaylee don't be rolling your eyes' Sam joked
'You can't even see me' I argued
'I don't' need too' Sam laughed as I pouted
'Sam, you were right. You got to do your own thing. You got to live your own life' Dean said
'You serious?' Sam asked shocked as I watched Dean impressed.
'You've always known what you want, and you got after it. You stand up to Dad and you always have. Hell, I wish I… anyway… I admire that about you. I'm proud of you, Sammy' Dean said as my jaw dropped.
'I don't even know what to say' Sam said shocked
'Say you'll take care of yourself' Dean said
'I will' Sam said simply
'Call me when you find Dad' Dean said
'Okay. Bye, Dean. Bye, Kaylee' Sam said softly, hanging up.
'Are you okay?' I asked Dean softly
'Yeah, yeah, who needs Sam when I got you by my side' Dean said grinning and I placed a hand on his forearm.
'I'll always be by your side… until you tell me to leave' I said sadly.
'Why would I ever tell you to leave?' Dean asked confused but I didn't answer.
…..
'It's not every day I get a research question on pagan idolatry' The professor said to Dean and I
'Yeah, well, call it a hobby' I said
'But you said you were interested in local lore?' The professor asked
'Yeah' I said
'I'm afraid Indiana isn't really known for its pagan worship' The professor explained
'What if it was imported? Like the Pilgrims brought their religion over. Wasn't this area settled by immigrants?' Dean asked
'Yeah' The professor said
'Like that town near here, Burkesville, where are their ancestors from?' Dean asked
'Northern Europe, I believe. Scandinavia' The professor stated
'What could you tell me about those pagan gods?' I asked
'Well, there are hundreds of Norse gods and goddesses' The professor explained
'We're actually looking for one. Might live in an orchard' I explained as the professor took us into his office and opened up a large, old book.
'A woods god. Well, let's see' The professor said looking through the book.
'Wait, wait, wait. What's that one?' Dean asked stopping on a page with had a picture of a scarecrow.
'That's not a woods god, per se' The professor stated
'The Vanir. The Vanir were Norse gods of protection and prosperity keeping the local settlements safe from harm. The villages built effigies of the Vanir in their fields. Other villages practiced human sacrifice, one male and one female' I read from the book, sharing a look with Dean.
'Kind of looks like a scarecrow, huh?' Dean asked
'Well, I suppose' The professor said softly
'This particular Vanir, its energy sprung from a scared tree?' I asked as I continued to read the book.
'Well, pagan believed all sorts of things were infused with magic' The professor explained
'So what would happen if the sacred tree was torched? You think it'd kill the god?' Dean asked
'Son… there are just legends we're discussing here' The professor said laughing
'Oh, of course. Yeah, you're right' Dean said
'Listen, thank you very much' I said shaking the professor's hand.
'Glad I could help' He said
'All right' Dean said as he opened the door, only to get a gun butt in the forehead, knocking him unconscious by The Sheriff.
'Oh you shouldn't have done that' I growled, shifting into a werewolf.
'What are you?' The sheriff asked shocked before the professor grabbed a Taser and shocked me in the back of the neck, knocking me unconscious too. My body going back into a human form.
