"You were right," John finally said after a while. Lita sent him a questioning look and he continued. "The grocery store a couple of weeks ago."
Oh boy, Lita thought to herself when it clicked in her mind and she knew what he meant by that before he could even say a thing. She didn't want to have this conversation right now. She was actually hoping they could avoid it, but unfortunately for her, that wasn't meant to be. "I was joking."
John shook his head. "No. Maybe you were, but there was a lot of truth in what you said."
"John, please don't. Not right now. I-"
"I love you."
Lita wasn't able to say anything for the moment, she knew that was coming, but that didn't mean she was ready for it. She really didn't want to deal with that right now. She shook her head. "No. You weren't supposed to say that. I told you not to say that. Why would you say that?"
"Because it's the truth. It doesn't matter if I didn't say anything, it wouldn't make it untrue. It wouldn't change how I feel about you."
"John-"
"I know you love me too," the man interrupted the other woman before she could say whatever was on her mind. She opened her mouth to say something and he had a feeling he knew exactly what she was going to say. She was going to say he was wrong, that he was confused, and he didn't know what he was talking about, but he wasn't going to have any of that. Not today. "Don't say you don't love me because I know that's a lie. Don't lie to me. You even told me yourself a few weeks ago."
"John, right now is hardly the time. I have company over," Lita said, deciding she was going to ignore what he said and hopefully end the conversation, but unfortunately for her, John had other plans.
John shrugged. He really didn't care especially because he would bet everything he had on who the 'company' she had over was. That just a annoyed him and he didn't know why. Or maybe Randy was right. That doesn't matter, he shook those thoughts out of his head before continuing. "I don't give a damn. We can't keep avoiding this. And you didn't object to what I just said so you know it's the truth."
Lita looked towards the entrance of the living room hoping someone wouldn't just pop up. She looked back over at the man who was so adamant on having this conversation right now. "John, please not right now."
He shook his head. "No, right now is the perfect time for this. We can't keep avoiding this," he said once again. "There is so much that has happened that we pretend didn't and never talk about it."
"That's normal for us, it's easier that way," Lita cut off John only for the favor to be returned.
"That's not normal and it's not easier! That's crap and you know it!" Lita took a step back from John who was getting really impatient. He could tell how startled she was by his little outburst. He sighed. "I'm sorry, but... You asked me twice- not once, but twice- to leave Mickie for you-"
"But you didn't." She didn't need a reminder, she remembered those days clearly and it still hurt just as much as it did when those events actually occurred.
John nodded. "You're right, I didn't. I will always consider that to be one of the biggest mistake of my life. Probably not the biggest I mean, I wouldn't have Mikayla if that didn't happen and same thing with Anthony with me cheating on Mickie. I guess two mistakes I made were like a blessing in disguise or something. I was so close to leaving her before you even asked me to, but I couldn't because she told me she was pregnant."
"You already told me this," Lita spoke up before John could get any further. "We don't have to go over this again."
John shook his head. "She wasn't pregnant, she lied."
Lita gasped in shock. She wasn't expecting that at all. "What?"
"She lied because she knew I was going to leave her for you. She lied about everything, even..." he trailed off and paused for a moment, not knowing how Lita would react to what he was about to say next. "She even lied about losing the baby. There was no baby in the first place so obviously she lied about that too."
"No," Lita shook her head as she sat down on the bottom of the stairs. "That's so low and horrible. That actually happens to people. That happened to me, to us. She wouldn't do that. That's a real issue, you don't mock it. She wouldn't do that," she shook her head once again, lookimg down at the ground. "People don't do that."
"I know, but she did," John insisted, taking a seat next to her. "I'm not lying to you, I wouldn't just make that up. She really did do that. I couldn't believe it either, but she told me herself right after I told her I wanted a divorce. She thought a baby would fix everything and it didn't because things were still pretty shaky after Mikayla was born."
Lita didn't say anything in response, simply continuing to stare at the ground. She felt like she could break down at any moment and she was trying really hard to avoid that. John took a brief pause so it was quiet for a little while before he spoke up again. "I really did want to just forget Mickie and come to you both times when you asked me to, but she was pregnant. Well, at least the second time. I thought it would be wrong to leave her that way-"
"And you couldn't think about that the night before when you told me it was me who you should be married to and not Mickie? Right before you slept with me?" Lita asked when she looked back up at John who now noticed she failed with trying hard not to cry. She wiped at her face which didn't do much before continuing. "Do you know how heartbroken I was after that? You don't know how that feels, because I never did anything like that to you."
"You broke up with me out of nowhere-"
"Don't! Don't compare those two. You don't get to compare those two at all. I felt so used after that! Yes, it was my choice too, but it doesn't make me feel used any less. You told me you loved me, that you shouldn't have married her because she wasn't me. Then we sleep together and the next morning you go straight to her even though I asked you not too. You will never undrstand how I felt at that moment. Or even now just thinking about it."
John let out a sigh and nodded. "I'm sorry, I never meant to hurt you. That's the last thing I even wanted to do, but everything was so complicated."
"It still kind of is."
"I know, but we can change that. You know it's something we both want, so please just give us another chance. Let's right our wrong."
"John-"
"I've heard enough," the two looked up when they heard another voice interrupt Lita in the process of joining them. Jake had been standing nearby the last couple of minutes ever since he heard John first shout. He could tell he had walked in on something important so he was about to just let them talk, but he changed his mind as they continued and now he didn't want to hear anymore.
The blonde man walked closer to the surprised two who were still sitting at the bottom of the stairs before he continued, focusing more so on the redhead. "I had a feeling there was something going on between you two. I knew he was the reason why we were taking this extremely slow. Or well you were."
"Jake-"
"No Lita. It's okay. We had no business staying together, we probably should have broken up a long time ago. We shouldn't have even gotten together in the first place. You probably only agreed to go on a date with me to get over him." He took a chance to look over at John before looking back at Lita. "Just do everyone a favor and figure out what it is that is going on with you two before you start dating or marrying someone else. I think getting two people mixed up in your mess and playing with their emotions was more than enough."
Lita nodded. Everything he just said was the truth. She was just telling John how horrible it felt thinking he used her, only now did she realize she did the same to her now ex-boyfriend. "I'm so sorry."
"Yea. Bye." With that said, Jake turned around and headed out that door.
It was queit between the former couple for a while after the other man left. "Now you don't have to worry about him."
"John-"
"There's no Mickie, no Jake, no one else. Just us. We can just fix our mistakes now. Let's just leave everything behind us and move on. We can be together. You know it's something we both want and so does..." he stopped himself when he realized he was about to say Anthony and that would probably piss her off like he was using their son to guilt her. "So please just give us another chance."
Lita didn't say anything for a while and John wasn't sure what she was thinking. He wasn't sure whether or not he wanted to know, but then she spoke up. "Leaving everything in the past is so much easier said than done. "She shook her head. "I do love you, I never stopped loving you no matter how hard I tried. I thought I would be able to do that with all the time that passed by, but that didn't happen. But I'm sorry, I can't do that again. I can't give you another chance to hurt me. I... I don't... I don't trust you."
