Epilogue: The Happy Ending

The shrill sound of a child's cry broke the silence of the citadel, a shrieking voice giving orders to ring the bells. Those bells bailed out the celebration tones as people poured out into the streets celebrating the birth of the Heir to the West by their beloved Queen.

Inside the palace a great crowd had gathered outside the birthing room. Morio and Hotaru stood next to their tense father as the hanyou watched the door with brooding eyes. Next to him Seiko sat beside his brother both engaged in a game of Go. The three warriors of the group stood in a close circle occasionally lifting their head to listen for a sound. Suchi held his squirming hatchling in his arms as he tweaked the wolf's ear as he bated the bear. His wife along with most of the women from their pack were inside the room with the Queen helping the labor along. It had been a very tense fifteen hours since the Lady had gone into labor late in the night.

The Lord of the West had been in the dojo since her water broke under the watchful eyes of his adopted daughter and nephew. They would bring him once the child was here otherwise the subtle changes and shrieks of pain in his mate's scent would send him crashing through the doors.

The only ones missing from the hall was the newly mated Dragon King, his mother, Ryo, and the Wolves from the East. Both parties, excluding the Red Dragon, were on their way and they would both be arriving within the next sunrise. It was silent in the hall for one more moment when a child's cry sent Jakken running through the halls. The others smiled at each other as the doors to the chamber opened and they were allowed to file in.

Kegan smiled at her sisters as Kagome brought the tiny bundle of silk to her and gently placed it in her arms. Sango moved to the doors and had opened them wide to allow their rather large pack inside the enormous chamber. Surabi stood on her left watching those around her heavily as if they were a threat which Kegan only shook her head at. The woman had been almost worse than Sesshomaru during her pregnancy, growing and swiping at anyone who came too close.

She moved her gaze from her family to the small little thing in her arms. Her smile was soft and adoring as she looked down at the little one, black hair covering his little head as he slept, his little features bunched before his eyes creaked open to look up at her. Kegan's breath caught as she looked into his eyes the same color as her own. She could feel the tears prick her eyes as she looked down at him, her little miracle.

Bending Kegan rubbed her nose along his little nose gentle, her heart jumping as he gurgled happily at her before yawning widely. So lost in this tiny little person she failed to notice her mate had entered and stood feet from her bed, watching her intently with the small bundle of cloth.

She looked beautiful to him. Her long hair had been braided to keep it out of the way and she wore a simple kimono that bore the western crest. Her face was flushed still and she had a slight sheen of sweat covering her but he was more focused on her face. Her eyes were so soft and beautiful as she looked over her pup, their pup.

Carefully he stepped forward anyone else in the room fading from recognition as he knelt at her bedside and gave an indulgent purr drawing her attention. Kegan's smile broadened as she looked at him then she slowly extended her arms.

Sesshomaru looked down into the blankets and he felt something within him shift. Despite the fact that he had held a child before this was different. His arms nearly trembled as he held the child close to his chest staying low beside the bed should he lose his hold. This tiny little person in every way shape and form had shifted his focus in only a moment.

"He is beautiful." He murmured aware that Kegan was watching him.

"Yes."

He looked away from the child to meet Kegan's warm gaze as she smooth back the tuft of black hair. Her voice was soft and gentle as she looked at him then back up at her mate.

"He needs a name." Sesshomaru nodded his mind whirling but all he could think was how happy his son made him and how beautiful…

"Yoshimi." He whispered it reverently and his son cooed at the word, a tiny little hand pulling loose from his wrapping and latching onto a pale strand of Sesshomaru's hair. Beside him Kegan smiled as he stood and turned to their family.

"His name is Yoshimi." Kegan watched as every person in the room bowed lowly, the respect in their eyes obvious until Sesshomaru turned back and presented the child back to her and sat down on the side of the bed as she cooed over him.

"Yoshimi. My little one." Sesshomaru nodded leaning close to breathe in the scent of her hair, pressing a kiss on her cheek. She 'hmm'ed' at his affection lifting Yoshimi closer to her face, her power rising and surrounding those in the room with her gentle aura.

Her mate gave a comforting purr his own aura rising with hers expanding the peace they both felt. Surrounded by the people they loved and that loved them most they watched their son. Their own piece of happiness they had fought so hard for.

The room filled with the content aura the two new parents released and as their family gathered around everything fell into place. This was it. This was the ending and the beginning and they had the rest of their long lives to live it. Together.

Outside, the sounds of celebration filled the streets and the large bells rang until dark, rejoicing for the birth of their new lord and rejoicing for their Lord and Lady as they finally found their happy ending.
