LOVE HURTS
CHAPTER 52
HOPE YOUR READY FOR THE BIG TWIST LATER THIS CHAPTER. THIS IS GOING TO BE MY LONGEST CHAPTER YET. ALSO, THIS WAS MY ORIGINAL GOAL.
PART I: A FAREWELL TO KYLEE_
Humphrey was shocked by what Kylee had asked.
"What?"
Kylee looked up at Humphrey, the tears running down her face like a waterfall. She was in unbelievable pain.
"Please Humphrey! Kill me!"
She begged.
Humphrey shook his head. "Kylee I couldn't, not my own sister."
Veronica saw this event as a family matter, and stepped outside.
"Please Humphrey, I'm begging you! You don't know what it's like to lose everyone you love. You don't know what it's like to see your loved ones die right in front of your eyes. You don't have a mate to lose, so you have no clue!" Kylee barked, tears falling from her face and soaking the ground.
Please Humphrey! I want to see them again. I want to see Shawn. I want to see Rawlings and Hope again, please! She begged.
Humphrey felt the tears in his eyes welling up and tried to fight it. But he was born an omega; he didn't have that kind of mental strength.
"I can't do it." he choked. "I couldn't kill my sister; I just don't have it in Me."
"Then we will have Veronica do it." Kylee choked. "It will be less painful for her.
Humphrey went outside and brought Veronica back into the den.
"What do you need help with Humphrey?" she asked as he dragged her in.
"Kylee wanted me to kill her, but I can't do it and -." Humphrey started.
Veronica eyed Humphrey, telling him he had said enough, and then turned to face Kylee, who was standing in the middle of the den, tears still fallen from her dark, black face.
"Anything you would like to say?"
Veronica asked.
"Yes." Kylee said, using all of her will power to stop crying.
"Humphrey, little bro, take care, I love you." she said, warmly hugging him tightly.
Then Kylee turned to face Veronica. "My dear friend Veronica. I'm glad that Humphrey has someone like you. Watch over my little brother, he's going to need you more than ever here really soon." Kylee said aloud, with a warm pleasant smile. "You were a great fried, I'm glad to have met you; you are the best friend I have ever had." She said hugging Veronica as well.
She released Veronica and cantered back to the middle of the cave. "Goodbye Humphrey. I love you little Bro, take care and I'll see you round." she said softly with a smile. Veronica nodded and cantered over next to Kylee.
"Goodbye Kylee, were going to miss you." Veronica said softly.
"Are you ready?"
Kylee nodded "Yes."
Kylee closed her eyes and waited patiently. She could feel Veronica wrap her jaws around her neck. She could feel Veronica's sharp teeth digging deeper and deeper into her neck. She felt her blood soaking her fur and her mind fade away to a black void, and smiled.
Veronica felt the blood flow into her mouth a she bit down harder and harder. Kylee didn't struggle though; she just sat there and let her do all the work.
"Thank you Veronica." Kylee choked with a smile.
Finally, Veronica felt Kylee's body fall limp as she drew breath no more.
Humphrey, caring too much for his sister, had looked away, as it was too painful for him.
Veronica gently placed Kylee on the ground next to Hope and Rawlings, then left, allowing Humphrey some alone time with his sister.
Humphrey fell to his haunches beside Kylee's now lifeless body. "Dear sis, I already miss you. You just weren't around long enough; I wish I could see you again. I love you, and I will see you real soon." He whispered, his tears soaking her black fur as he bowed his head in respect of his fallen sister.
After about five minutes of grieving, Humphrey left the den, meeting Veronica outside.
"Humphrey, I'm sorry, I-." Veronica started.
Humphrey cut her off. "It's not your fault, she wanted this." He said in between sobs. "She's up there with her family now."
Veronica felt somewhat depressed over Kylee's death, but not as much as Humphrey was. She could look into his eyes and see all of the pain and hurt in them. The pain she felt only magnified when she looked into Humphrey's eyes.
Just as Humphrey had been crying, Veronica could feel the tears welling up in her own eyes. Though she was fonder of Nicky, Kylee had still been a very close friend. Fighting back the tears as hard as she could, she hugged him tightly, thinking it would help comfort both of them.
After about an hour of mourning, they decided to keep on moving. But Humphrey was still deeply depressed inside about what had happened to his sister.
"Veronica?" he said in between sobs, his eyes dark with sadness and hurt.
Veronica looked over at Humphrey and saw that he was still hurt by what had happened an hour ago. "Yes Humphrey? What is it?"
"Do you ever think we will make it home alive, the two of us?" he asked his eyes dry and black from all the crying.
Veronica did nothing more than smile. "Of course I do." she answered softly, warmly hugging him. "Don't think like that Humphrey." she said, tears welling up in her eyes knowing that there was no way that it was true, but she didn't want to see him like this. Whenever something made him cry, it made her cries, knowing that he had been hurt so badly.
"I love you Veronica." Humphrey responded, hugging her back even tighter.
Veronica smiled as she gripped him even tighter. "I love you too."
They just stood there, for the next few minutes hugging each other tightly, before they would once again start heading home.
PART 2: BACK WHERE THEY STARTED_
As Humphrey and Veronica cantered through the forest, they came upon a sign, and for some reason, it seemed vaguely familiar. It read: Sawtooth, Idaho, Nation Wilderness Reserve.
Humphrey looked all around him. Everything here seemed so familiar. The grass was an intensely bright green, the mountains stood out above all other things, tall and majestic. There were trees everywhere, yet there were no animals.
"It's strange how a national wilderness reserve is not abundant with life." Humphrey stated.
Veronica nodded her head in agreement. "Yeah, you'd think a place like this would be teeming with life." She added.
Humphrey nodded and continued walking. It was almost sunrise, they had been up all night, walking.
"You know Veronica, I can't quite put my paw on it, but something about this place tells me that we are almost home." He stated. "Something about this place seems to scream out to me, your almost home!"
Veronica nodded. "Yeah, I feel it too."
As she walked through the field where she unknowingly had been standing only a few months ago, more images began to flash in her mind; images of two large birds. A tall white and gray goose and a yellow duck flashed in her mind; again these images seemed vaguely familiar to her. She began to drift away in thought, wondering as to who they might be, but was instantly brought back to reality by Humphrey.
"Hey Veronica, You okay?" he asked.
Veronica nodded, and threw in a smile as well. "Of course, just spacing out." She replied.
Humphrey nodded, spun around and kept walking.
After about five or ten more minutes of walking, they came to a dirt trail that sat on the ground right next to a log cabin. Again, the sights seemed familiar to them both, and with each familiar sight they passed, more and more images kept flashing inside Veronica's mind.
Every time she would space out, trying to figure out what the images were, who they were or why, she would instantly be brought back to reality by Humphrey, who would just ask: "hey are you okay?" she would just smile and say: "don't worry, I'm fine."
Kate followed the trail, as it led out to a thicker, dark black trail that shot out in two different directions.
They walked to the end of the dirt trail and stopped, deciding which way it was they should go.
Humphrey stopped and thought real hard. When he was unable to come up with anything, he lowered his head closer to the ground, and searched with his nose for something, anything at all that might help them. But there was nothing at all that would help them find their way home.
Veronica then, out of nothing but sheer instinct chose to go right. Hoping and praying that she was right, he followed her.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: OKAY, QUICK NOTE, THE THING IM DOING WITH THE SECTIONS, PART 1, PART 2 ETC. IS I NEEDED A BREAK, AND THIS STORY IS TOO LONG TO GIVE EVERY LAST MINUTE DETAIL, SO A NEW PART WILL BEGIN WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN DOING SOMETHING FOR SO LONG.
PART 3: SO CLOSE, BUT YET SO FAR_
Humphrey collapsed over onto the ground, he had been walking for hours, he hadn't eaten in three days and he was still hit pretty hard by that incident with Kylee. But he vowed that if he ever found out who did that to his sister's pups, he would kill them, with extreme prejudice. No mercy, no pity. He would kill them cold-bloodedly, just as they had his sister's pups.
Veronica fell back on her haunches next to Humphrey. "What's wrong? Tired?" she asked.
Humphrey nodded. "I have been walking for hours, my paws are bleeding, I haven't eaten in days, and my sister died yesterday." He said weakly. "I feel awful."
This put a frown on Veronica's face; she didn't like it at all when he felt awful. "Well, other than get us some food, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do for you."
"Some food would be nice." He muttered.
Veronica smiled as Humphrey pulled himself up to his feet. "Good, just wait here." She said as she cantered off, looking for food.
Humphrey looked up to the sky. "You were right sis. I am lucky to have someone like her." he whispered, knowing she could hear him.
He then stood fell backwards on his haunches and watched as Kate vanished into the forest.
About, ten maybe twenty minutes later, Veronica returned with at least four large rabbits, each of them being securely and tightly held in the safety of her jaws.
"I'm sorry, but this was the best I could find." Veronica whimpered, fearing Humphrey would start to whine.
"Well, it's not as much as I would have liked, but it's enough." He replied.
Veronica was somewhat pleased.
She tossed two of the rabbits over towards him, which he obligingly caught with his own jaws, instantly digging in to his meal.
Once their meal was over and done with, the two saw it necessary to take shelter. So they found a small cave that was just big enough for the both of them, and slept there for the night.
PART 4: ALMOST HOME_
"Humphrey! Humphrey!" a voice shouted.
Humphrey was tired, he did not want to get up, but his love for Veronica said otherwise as he slowly picked himself up off the ground.
"Good morning." He said warmly as he stretched his muscles, preparing himself for the long day they had ahead of them.
"Good morning." Veronica warmly replied back.
Humphrey just stood there staring at her for a few seconds, admiring her beauty and magnificence as it was magnified by the brilliantly bright morning sun.
"Well, let's get moving." He suggested, looking away from her for a second, just to see where he was going.
After about two or three more hours of walking, they had passed many things, many sights, each sight growing more familiar than the next. They passed the gas station, the ravine in which Humphrey had saved Kate's life, and now, finally, they had reached the mountains.
Humphrey was leading the way up the frozen mountain, with Veronica not too far behind.
Finally, they had reached the top of the mountain. The air became thick, and hard to breathe. Just when they had stopped to catch their breath, three bears happen to be nearby and heard the two talking to each other, and were now going to kill them.
Humphrey looked at the bears. "Have we met before?" he joked.
When the bears didn't laugh, he quickly turned around, grabbed Veronica and quickly dove over the edge.
"Humphrey! What the hell are you doing?" she screamed. "Are you trying to get us killed?"
Humphrey just smiled at her. "What? You don't trust me?" he said softly.
Veronica hung her head low. "I trust you, this just seems a bit extreme." She said softly, watching as the snow covered ground grew closer and closer.
"Okay, when you hit the ground, make sure you land feet first, it will minimize the impact! Humphrey shouted over the wind as it whipped in their ears.
Veronica nodded, and threw her feet out towards the ground. Humphrey let go of her and did the same.
They hit the ground, a large pile of snow slowing them, but not stopping as they broke through the ice that covered a once water filled pond.
Humphrey quickly shot up out of the hole that leads to a freezing, and frozen pond.
"Oh man! Boy was that Fun or what?" he shouts, somewhat a bit overjoyed.
"I told you could trust me Veronica." He bragged.
When he got no reply, his first instinct was to dive back in the water and look for her, sure enough; she was still under water, Unconscious.
Humphrey dived in after her, grabbing her by the scruff and pulling he back to the warm and welcoming air.
Humphrey checked her breathing, no breathing. This caused him to tense up. He checked her for heartbeat.
He could hear the faintest steady thudding of her heart. He sighed in relief, she was still alive.

PART 5: HOME AT LAST, TRAGEDY STRIKES_
Veronica felt something pushing down hard against her ribcage. She opened her eyes, and coughing up blood, found Humphrey standing over her.
He had pumped the water out of her lungs, and saved her life.
"Thanks dear." She said warmly, licking him on the cheek.
He could do nothing more than to give her a smile. "I could let you die, I would have nothing to live for if you did." He confessed.
Veronica blushed.
Suddenly, she felt something violently bump beneath her, and she looked around her. They were on a train, headed home.
"See, I told ya you could trust Me." He replied.
Veronica just smiled back at him. "I never doubted you." she answered softly.
"I love you Veronica." Humphrey said, hugging her tight.
Veronica just hugged him back even tighter. "I love you too Humphrey."
"Now get some sleep." Humphrey commanded. "I'll wake you up here in a few hours when we get there."
Veronica nodded and found a nice comfortable spot and curled up in a ball, almost instantly falling asleep.
A few hours later, Humphrey was on the verge of falling asleep, when he saw a relieving sight. A large sign with a Canadian moose on it that read: Jasper Park, wilderness reserve.
"finally." He thought, as he cantered over and woke Veronica from her sleep.
"Huh? Humphrey? What's going on?" she asked sleepily.
"Were home." He answered. "And alive too." He joked with a smile.
When they jumped out of the car, they heard a loud creaking and crashing sound behind them. Humphrey turned, and just barely caught sight of the large wooden piece that struck him in the head, knocking him out instantly.
Humphrey opened his eyes, and looked around all around him lay metal and wood and steel and blood. He looked over beside him and saw the lifeless body of Veronica lying in front of him, dead.
