"So how did your defence go?" JJ asked with excited interest and the rest of the chatter in the room ground to a quiet halt. Amelia had refused to tell anyone how she had done, even Spencer, until they were all present. Spencer had a good idea how it had went since Amelia wasn't very good at hiding her emotions.
Amelia bubbled over with excitement when she squealed out, "I passed! They loved my thesis!" She looked towards Spencer, "I know that you probably figured that part out already, but here's the part that you don't know…the head of the department asked me to continue my research as a Ph.D. candidate with funding! Even better, they are giving me credit for the coursework I completed in both my MAs, so that I can skip that portion of the Ph.D. program. Isn't that amazing?!"
Spencer bounded over to Amelia and enveloped her into a huge hug while the rest of the team crowded around offering their congratulations.
"This calls for a special drink to celebrate the occasion. It's a good thing I came prepared," Rossi smiled with his eyes crinkling at the corners as he produced a bottle of Dom Perignon.
"I'll go get some glasses," Emily said and made her way into the kitchen.
"I'll give you a hand," Morgan volunteered and followed Emily, taking several of the glasses and passing them around.
Spencer focused on Amelia, "I knew you could do it. I'm so proud of you. You are going to accept the offer, right?"
Amelia bit her lip with a slight sense of uncertainty, "I really want to, but I'm worried about my job with the Smithsonian. That kind of job only comes around once in a lifetime."
"Hey," Spencer cut in gently and tipped her chin up with his hand, "Take the offer. Continue your studies if that's what you want to do. I know that you originally only thought of working or running a library, but this could be an opportunity to work in a museum and study the documents first hand. I'm sure you can work something out with the museum. Right now, the job is only for 6 weeks…maybe Dr. Brahams could keep you on part time after that. That way you could do both, if you're up to it."
Spencer was knocked off balance when Amelia threw her arms around him and kissed him soundly on the lips, "You are the smartest, most wonderful boyfriend in the world! I love you Spencer Reid!"
"Alright you love birds, take a glass each so I can pour the bubbly and propose a toast," Rossi joined in while everyone chuckled.
It was late by the time everyone had left the apartment. Amelia and Spencer took one look at the pile of dishes and tiredly decided to leave them to the next day.
"Come on Ms. Graduate, let's go to bed," Spencer beckoned invitingly before grabbing Amelia's hand and guiding her down the hallway.
The pair undressed for both and snuggled under the cozy blankets for a minute. Spencer was just about to start drifting off when he felt cool hands sliding across his abdomen. Amelia followed the path her hands were taking with her mouth and continued their meandering up Spencer's chest and to his lips.
After she pressed an earth shattering kiss to his lips she leaned back a bit so they could both take a breath of air, "Can you do me a favor?"
"Anything," Spencer breathed out in a daze.
Amelia smiled a bit nervously, "just lie still, okay?"
"Okay," Spencer replied with burgeoning interest marring his features.
Amelia climbed on top of Spencer and began to trail kisses all over his body until they were both feeling their nerve endings standing on end. Finally, she leaned down to give his lips one more kiss for luck before she positioned her body to accept his.
She felt him slide home and they both groaned with mutual satisfaction and relief, before they got down to the business of thoroughly reuniting.
Finally! It had happened! Amelia felt totally blissed out as she basked in the afterglow of their lovemaking. Dr. Howard had suggested that she try taking the dominant position, because it would give her the feeling of being in control, and it had worked.
Out of nowhere, Spencer rolled towards Amelia until they were facing each other, "Amelia, will you marry me?"
Amelia gaped in shock at Spencer, "Are you serious?"
"Absolutely, 100% serious. I love you more than words can say, and I know that we will successfully make it through anything that life brings us if we work together. Please say yes," Spencer finished.
Amelia felt poleaxed, but a rush of pure happiness flooded through her system. Spencer was right, they had already been through hell together, and now things felt stronger than ever between them. Life was headed in the most positive direction that she could ever dream of, "Yes. Yes, I will."
Spencer's eyes widened in surprise and he blurted out, "I haven't bought you a ring yet…I wanted to pick out something perfect and I haven't found it yet."
"Whatever you pick I'm sure will be beautiful," a yawn escaped from Amelia and she sleepily leaned her head on Spencer's shoulder, "I think I'm worn out…" her words faded into silence as sleep overtook her.
Spencer gathered her in close and closed his eyes too. He couldn't imagine a more perfect day.
The next morning dawned bright and clear. After another round of eager lovemaking Amelia and Spencer ate a hearty breakfast and cleaned the kitchen. It wasn't terribly romantic after such a life changing night, but neither of them liked living with mess. Once the last dish had been put away Amelia picked up the phone to call her brother while Spencer took out a pen and paper to write to his mother.
Several phone calls later all their friends and family knew the happy news. Penelope was initially put out that Spencer hadn't proposed earlier in the evening at the party, but once Amelia promised that she could be a bridesmaid, Penelope was all sunshine.
"Phew, I'm glad that's done with. I've never been one to enjoy being smack in the spotlight, and I know you aren't either," Amelia said with obvious relief as she hung up the phone.
Spencer looked up from the letter to his mother that he was finishing and smiled apologetically, "I'm sorry I didn't take care of more of the phone calls."
Waving him off, Amelia answered back with a smile, "I complain, but secretly, this is the phone call I've been waiting to make ever since I met you."
A blush crept up Spencer's face and he ducked his head back down and rapidly scribbled away. He signed his name and then folded up the letter and put it into an addressed envelope so that it could be dropped off in the mailbox later in the day.
Absently, Amelia toyed with her tea cup while she watched Spencer finish with his letter. Finally, she cleared her throat, "So, uh, Spence…now that we are engaged I should probably tell you something…"
Warily, Spencer looked up, "Should I be worried?" he asked hesitantly imagining all sorts of scenarios that could trigger such an embarrassed and frightened look on Amelia. He was halfway convinced she was changing her mind about the engagement when she finally cleared her throat and spoke up.
"Um, no, I don't think so. I mean, it should be good news…I think."
"Amelia," Spencer prodded while he walked towards her and gathered her hands into his.
"Right, sorry. Well, you know how my parents died in a car accident?"
"Yes."
"Well, they had a lot of life insurance and then there was a big settlement from the insurance company of the drunk driver, plus we sold my mom's restaurant chain because neither of us wanted to run it, and the house, then there were also the investments … and well, I've never really touched any of it. I was always brought up to work for what you have. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I've got some money, well, a lot of money actually and I just thought you should know."
Spencer stared at Amelia in surprise and felt his stomach give a queasy lurch, "I've never really been concerned about money, I'm happy with what I have. But just out of curiosity, how much money are you talking about?"
"Um, I'd have to talk with my financial advisor to find out the exact amount, but it's a little over $5 million dollars," Amelia finally said with a sheepish face.
Spencer felt his mouth drop open in genuine shock, he hadn't anticipated that much money. After some comical guppy impressions, Spencer managed to squeak out, "Uh, wow! That's not what I was expecting…what do you want to do with it? It's yours after all."
Amelia shrugged her shoulders, "I know you love your job, and I've never had any desire to sit around at home, so I suggest we continue as we are. Maybe one day when we start feeling a little cramped here we can buy a house somewhere and settle down…you know have a couple baby geniuses or something," she winked. A brief pause later, and Amelia ambled on, "I don't really want to flash it around, and I know Jason doesn't like to either. We both like to keep low profiles."
Relieved, Spencer let go of a breath of air that he hadn't realized he had been holding, "That, that sounds good."
A/N: Something good had to happen to this couple some time right? Money isn't always necessary, but it sure does make life easier (if only we all had a hidden stash of money).
