Chapter 50: This Was My Fault

"You mean Rory? My husband, Rory, yeah? That's him, isn't it? I have no idea. I can't find him but I love him very much, don't I?" - Amelia Pond

"Wh-No, No, no..." Amy whimpered. She could feel the slight pull of the wall, but it was already closing. "No, come back."

She felt her jaw quivering and tear well up in her eyes. No, it wasn't possible. The Doctor - he said the walls would close and they couldn't get back.

The wall rippled then crumbled up like paper, leaving just a blank whiteness behind.

The pulling stopped and Amy could hear the Doctor climbing to his feet. Amy yanked at the chain of the handcuff until it broke, already weakened by the force of the void pulling at her. She quickly pulled the ropes off, not even looking at the bloody rope burn that had been left around her wrists.

Without thinking, she shot up, running full speed at the wall, colliding with it. "No, open up!" She screamed at it, "Open up! Give him back to me!" She begged. She could feel the tears running down her face as she sobbed and screamed.

The Doctor walked over to her, standing beside her on the wall. He wasn't looking at her though. His eyes were a million miles away, staring at the wall. Slowly he lifted his hand and pressed it to the wall. His head followed, pressing his ear against the plaster as if maybe, if he just concentrated, he'd be able to hear Rose on the other side.

Amy let out a choked sob as she thought about the shop girl. But it was okay. It would be okay. She was with her family.

She fell to the ground as her legs couldn't support her anymore, pressing her forehead to the wall. "It's not fair.." She whispered through her sobs, "He was so close."

She felt something crinkle under her leg and she looked down. Laying on the ground, looking much dirtier and crinkled then the last time she'd seen it, was the Polaroid picture that she'd had on her when she first found herself in Hendrik's.

She'd lost it months ago - she didn't know where, but she'd been heartbroken. Looking at the aged picture she realized that Rory must've found it.

And now he'd returned it to her, at the worst possible price.

In the Parallel world Rory still had yet to figure out what had happened.

He stood to the side, away from the family who watched Rose as she sobbed and screamed and begged to be taken back. Rory wanted to join her, to screamed at the universe at the unfairness of it all. He'd been promised a life with Amy after this was all over.

Slowly he walked over to Rose, gently pulling her away from the wall.

She turned, her mascara running all down her face and her hair mussed. She looked up and saw the tears in his own eyes and without another words buried her face into his shoulder.

He barely knew this girl, but he'd just given up everything for her - and he was going to make damn sure that that sacrifice wasn't in vain.

Jenny tapped at the computer frantically, trying to find out what had happened, "I've lost him..." She whispered in confusion.

"Could be damaged." Jack said, his voice filled with worry and fear. They were the ones who'd roped him into this mess, if he died...Amy would never forgive him.

"I can't..." Jenny shook her head, her bright eyes wide, "He's just gone."

Jack shook his head, "But did he do it!" He looked at Jenny hopefully, "Did he save Rose."

Jenny opened and closed her mouth a few times, shrugging. They didn't know.

"No..." River whispered from her own spot, looking down her sad eyes, "He didn't."

"how do you know?" Jack asked, his voice dangerously low.

She smiled, but there was no humour in it, "This was a temporal tipping point. If he had saved her...my memories would have changed as well."

She stood up and walked over to the computer.

"We failed." She whispered, "It was all for nothing."

The Doctor was annoyingly calm. Not the normal sort of calm, Amy could tell he was suppressing everything, forcing it deep deep down where he would never have to feel it. Instead he helped Amy, who was near hysterical, as they walked towards the TARDIS.

Torchwood was empty. Every now and then they came across a dead body. Once the Doctor stopped the close the eyes of an elderly woman who was looking at the ceiling in a terrible fright.

Finally they reached the TARDIS, hiding away behind a sarcophagus and other supplies.

The Doctor unlocked the door and stepped inside, but Amy couldn't. She stood, looking at the blue box, the image distorted by the tears which filled her eyes.

"Amy?" The Doctor asked, his voice thick.

She shook her head, her lip quivering, "You knew..."

"What?"

"You knew!" Am sobbed, here watery eyes glaring at the doctor as her mascara ran down them, She stomped up to the Doctor, "You knew This whole time. The Whole time I travelled with you, you knew this would happen and you said nothing."

She aimed at the blurred figure in front of her, hitting and slapping and yelling. This was all his fault! He should have told them! If he had warned them, they could've stopped it, they could've saved him!

"I'm know..." The Doctor said in the soothing voice. Trying to gently garb her arms as she swung at him, "Amy, Shhh. I know."

And then she collapsed, wrapping her arms around him as she sobbed. He held her, rubbing her back as he tried to calm her down.

"We could go back." Amy said through her heavy sobs, "We could go back and I could touch him, none of this would happen."

She looked up through her blurry vision and saw the Doctors face. A broken sob broke through her at the empty look that looked down at her. She knew what that look meant.

"I'm sorry Amy." He whispered as she clung to him, still filled with horror and rage and an emptiness that could never be filled, "It's fixed...if it wasn't then I would go back...save Ro-" He cleared his throat, not caring that Amy had stopped paying attention a long time ago.

...

Jack packed up the last of his equipment, the failure heavy on his heart. He really thought they could do it, save Rose...but in the end not only had she fallen anyway, but they'd lost Rory as well.

"Did you know?" He asked River. She gave him a questioning look, "Did you know that we would fail."

She looked back to her own pack, "I knew that Rory would fall, it was unavoidable, fixed. But Rose didn't have to fall with him. I had hoped...that some good could come out of this hopeless situation. But I've just made it worse. Because she well with him, the whole event became fixed."

"You know if Amy ever finds out..."

"She'll be furious with me." River nodded, "I know."

Jack paused, not entirely sure if he should ask this question, "Why...why did you want to save her? You never even met her."

River winced, "I have my reasons."

"Well what are they?"

She kept silent, her eyes a million miles away. Finally Jack gave up, knowing he wouldn't be finding out.

Jenny walked into the room, looking as sad as the rest of them. She sighed, "We have a small problem."

Jack furrowed his eyebrows and walked with her into the room. Inside were all the bodies that had been collected from inside Torchwood one, all in body bags, ready to be sent homes to their families.

Jenny walked up to two Body bags, which were open on the Table.

Jack let out a soft breath as he looked at the faces of Rory and Amy Williams.

"They're from the alternate reality." Jenny whispered, unable to even look at the bodies, "What...what should be do with them. They don't have family, and we can't just...I mean it's still them."

Jack sighed at the alternate forms, shaking his head, "I know what we have to do." He thought about the body coolers at Torchwood Three.

River understood, and flinched, unable to look at the forms of her parents laying dead, their hands touching, together even in death.

"Doctor?" Amy crept into the console room slowly. He hadn't come out of it in a week and she hadn't spoken to him. She'd been embarrassed by the way that she'd blown up at him. But she couldn't help the horrible bitterness that crept up whenever she thought about it, "Doctor are you still in here?"

He didn't respond, but she could see him on the other side of the console, half the panels ripped apart with wires and other bits out. He lay underneath them, fiddling with the wires.

"Oh, Doctor..." Amy crouched down next to him, "What did you do?"

"Nothing." He sniffed, not looking away from the wires, "I know exactly what I'm doing."

As if to prove his words the console sparked and he hissed, jumping back.

"Sure." Amy nodded softly, "Doctor...what are you doing?"

"I'm er-." He paused as if he had to think about it, "I'm trying to triangulate the microfractures caused by the cracking. It's been rough on the TARDIS and I've had to reroute some of the power from other systems...oh there probably won't be any hot water for a month for so."

Amy gave him a soft smile and nodded, "Why?"

He paused. "Um, cause we can...I mean, they won't be big enough for a person but we-" His voice cracked slightly, and he went back into his work, trying to regain is compose. After a moment he cleared his throat, "We could send a message."

"Doctor..." Amy shook her head, not wanting to get her hopes up. She could already feel her heart swelling at the thought that she might be able to see him one last time, "That would take an enormous amount of power."

"I know." He grumbled, "I can force a star into supernova. Already found one. Dead system, no planets capable of supporting life."

"Doctor." Amy looked at him, "Are you sure this'll work?"

"It has to." The Doctor sniffed again, pushing his glasses up his nose, "It just...has to, I have to say goodbye."

"But what if it doesn't." Amy whimpered, then suck in a breath, trying to force the tears back down. She'd cried enough in the past week to fill the swimming pool.

"Amy..." The Doctor started calmly, stopping all work, "It has to work, because...Because you're right." He took in a shaky breath, pulling out from his work station and sitting beside Amy. Her heart clenched to see the tears building up in his eyes, "This was my fault. I didn't tell you this would happen. I didn't warn you, and If I had you could have warned me and hen Rose- she's still be..."

Am could feel her own tears starting to fill her eyes as the reality of the situation hit her. She wasn't coming back. Not ever. The TARDIS had sealed off her bedroom. And the entire time she'd been only thinking about Rory, about her own pain.

So Amy nodded at him, moving over to the Captains chair, and sitting in it, neither of them saying a word as he continued his work.

"It's finished."

Amy jumped up at the first voice she'd heard in days.

"What?" She asked.

The Doctor looked at the Console, which he'd put back together, "It's finished, we can send a message."

Amy nodded, "When?"

He looked at the controls, "One hour."

Amy nodded to herself, sitting on the chair as she thought to herself about what she could possibly say to him to make this better.

...

Amy came into view on the beach beside the Doctor.

She could only see Rose, and for a moment her heart shattered, but then Rory stepped into view and she smiled at him with tear filled eyes.

"Where are you?" Rose asked.

"Inside the TARDIS." The Doctor answered.

Rory shook his head, "How? I thought...once the walls closed it was impossible."

"There's one tiny little gap in the universe left, just about to close. And it takes a lot of power to send this projection, I'm in orbit around a super nova.' He laughed softly, "I'm burning up a sun just to say goodbye."

"You look like a ghost..." Rose shook her head.

The Doctor pulled out his sonic, "Hold on..." he pointed it back at the console and they solidified.

"Can I t-?"

The Doctor shook his head regretfully, "We're still only an image. No touch."

Rose's voice trembled, "Can't you come through properly?"

"The whole thing would fracture. Two universe would collapse."

"So?" Rose said, only sounding like she was half joking. They both stared at each other for a few moments and Amy took this as her cue.

Amy walked away from the Doctor. On her end she was just walking to the other side of the console, but to them it must look like she went further down the beach.

Rory followed her, and once the others couldn't hear them, Amy started to cry.

"I'm so sorry." She sniffed, looking at his image which was blurry from her tears, "This is all my fault. If I hadn't let that stupid angel touch me, none of his would have ever happened."

"No." Rory said sternly, "No, it's not your fault. Never." He laughed softly, "I wanted to help...I thought I could save Rose."

"How..." Amy's voice shook and the wind blew her hair around. Looking to the right she could see Rose crying as she and the Doctor spoke, "How did you know about this?"

"River." Rory said gently.

Amy furrowed her eyebrows at that. "River, what?"

"I don't know." Rory shook his head, "She wanted to help, I think she was still fairly early in her own time stream, still pretty young. More like Mels than River."

"But..." Amy shook her head, trying to keep her voice straight, "If she knew...if she knew it'd do this, then why-"

"I don't know." Rory whispered, but then took a step forward, "But don't you dare think that this is the end. I swear to you that I will find a way back...I always find a way back to you."

Amy shook her head, her tears coming down freely, "What will you do in the meanwhile?"

He smiled at her, "Get a job at Torchwood I suppose. Save the world."

"The usual then?"

He nodded at her, but then his face got serious, "Amy..."

"I know." She nodded, unable to see through the thick mass of tears that run down her face. She must look a sight, her eyes red and puffy and her hair back in a ratted ponytail. "I know, I always know..." She sobbed.

Tears were gathering in his eyes now, and he reached up to touch her face, but his fingers went right through her skin. It was just a projection, she wasn't actually there.

"I'm gonna miss you." She whispered.

He chuckled, "Oh you won't be seeing the last of me."

"But how..." She choked back a sob, "How can I look you in the eye and not tell you what's going to happen."

"By being strong." He whispered, "You're the strongest person I know."

Amy nodded, looking around, "I have seconds..."

"Amy." He looked at her, his voice soft, "Before you go. I have warn you. There's a man, and he's dangerous - and he's going to come after you."

Her tears started to dry at the serious look on his face. "Who? What're you talking about?"

He leaned forward until his head was close to her, and he whispered, "Watch out for Ha-"

And then he faded from view.

Amy was so distraught she honestly couldn't care that he hadn't finished the sentence.

The Doctor was standing on the opposite side of the console, neither of them moving. He pushed his hands over his face, clearing away the tears that had fallen, and then moved around the console, looking at the controls not entire sure of what to do.

Amy still hadn't moved, looking at the place where he'd been just a moment before. She brought up her hand, clearing the tears on either side of her face, trying to regain her composure.

The Doctor settled beside her and they looked at each other, both red eyed and tear stained.

"I never got to tell her..." He choked up, unable to get the words out, "The window closed to fast."

Amy let out a choked sob at that, "She knew..." She whispered, "I'm sure of it."

The Doctor nodded, looking at the console, only to stiffened slight and look up towards the door, wide eye'd.

"What?" He gapped at something, aghast.

Amy turned and jumped back slightly to see someone standing in the TARDIS. A woman, who looked just as shocked as they were that she was there. She was wearing a long wedding dress with ginger hair, that fell softly to her shoulders, and a veil.

"What?!" The Doctor said again, even more confused than before.

"Who are you?" The Bride asked them disdainfully.

The Doctor looked at Amy, but she was gapping at the Bride, equally as confused.

"But-" The Doctor looked dumbfounded.

"Where am I?" She yelled at them, looking between them.

The Doctor looked lik a fish, "What?!"

The Bride looked fed up, and rolled her eyes at them in anger, "What the hell is this place?!"

The Doctor froze, shaking his head in pure confusion.

"What?!
