Two days later

Kelly walked into the house. He was trying to be quiet as Matt was probably still in bed. He was sure that Matt still had to be in bed. It was two days ago now that they had come back from Vegas and Yesterday Matt had seemed a bit tired form the whole trip. It was not too bead but Kelly just hoped that he would sleep in today so he would be less tired. Although Matt was almost recovered now there was no shame in just being tired.

Kelly switched to his running gear real quick. Although he had just come back from shift he just wanted to go out for a run. But suddenly Matt came walking into the kitchen with his running shoes on.

''Good morning, what are you doing up so early?''

''I am coming with you.'' Matt said as he came walking out with his running clothes on.

''Are you sure? I had expected you wanted to rest up after all the Vegas fun.''

''I feel fine. I won't let you run alone.'' Matt said then and they had a quick breakfast together, watching the news to let the breakfast lower before they walk out.

''I only got 2 shifts left without you.'' Kelly said as he started off slow because he was worried about his friend but his friend seemed to be doing fine.

Matt was running so fast that Kelly had to try to hard to keep up with him because it was also that he was tired from shift and Matt was running really fast.

''Hey don't run that fast.''

''I am not even going that fast. I am going normal speed and I am going back to work next week. So just get used to me running again.'' Matt said teasing to Severide. He was getting a bit out of breath but not too bad. Because he still had to be a bit careful he was not straining but he felt really well, even while he was going pretty fast.

''I am excited you are coming back to work. Finally!'' Kelly said happy and they ran back home. Matt was out of breath but nothing too bad. It was just because he had been running really hard but he also was happy that he had made it completely. They had really enjoyed the run but went to shower in their own bathrooms then. Matt came walking out with a towel around his waist to grab some coffee and Kelly didn't want to look at the large scar on his chest, but it did catch his attention. Matt looked down at the scar then.

''I am sorry…I mean, I didn't want to stare at it.'' Kelly said then.

''It is fine. If I didn't want you to look at me I should wear a shirt. It is just a scar. It doesn't bother me anymore.'' Matt said as he grabbed the coffee and walked back to his bedroom then to get dressed. Kelly looked as his friend walked away, relieved the scar did not bother him anymore and that he seemed to be feeling fine. Maybe he had underestimated his friend.

They spend the afternoon watching some movies and Matt helped Kelly out with some of the report work that Kelly had taken home.

''By the way, after dinner, we are going out!''

''What, where?'' Matt asked a bit surprised.

''You will see.'' Kelly said with a bit of a mysterious smile that worried Matt. After dinner they drove to the academy with Kelly's car and when they got out. Kelly lifted two of the small foldable camping chairs out of the back of the car and took a cool box with him as well.

''Any special reason we are coming here?'' Matt asked, although he always liked being here.

''I don't know. I just wanted to see the city from a really nice view.'' Kelly said as they made their way to the academy. When they had both just working at the academy they had spent a lot of time on the roof here with Andy, just chatting and enjoying the view. It was nice to be back here, because the later memories of this place were not all that good.

They walked to the roof of the academy, Kelly putting down the chairs and grabbing a can of beer from the cool box and threw it to Matt. Matt could grab it just in time and sat down then.

''I shouldn't have a beer.''

''Well you know what that occasional beer is? I think this is one of them.'' Kelly said then and Matt nodded, sitting down on one of the chairs and in silence they just enjoyed the nice few for a few minutes.

''It was a long recovery, but I am ready to come back now.'' Matt said as they sat outside, looking at the view.

''There is no shame in you not coming back just yet.'' Kelly said then as he drank some more beer.

''What, you don't want me back?'' Matt asked then, teasing, but looked a bit concerned then. ''You keep seeing I shouldn't come back, is that really what you think?''

''No…not like that. I am just concerned about you. That is all. I don't want you to get hurt again.'' Kelly said then.

''I won't get hurt again.'' Matt bluffed. He looked around the roof and also realized that this was the place where they had talked Vargas of the ledge. He had been in the same position but he was lucky enough to come back and he had never felt so down. It had not been an easy recovery but luckily he had never gotten that low and he was so grateful he got to have this other chance to live and that he got to come back to the work that he loved so much and the work that was his passion. That made him just really happy.

But Severide seemed to be a bit unsure of what his friend had just said.

''You don't know. Shay was fine but the next moment she was gone. She was fine one moment and then she was gone. I can't stand the thought of losing you.'' Kelly said then and Matt looked away from his friend, tears forming in his eyes because it did touch him Kelly said that.

''Well, I don't want to lose you either and I never forbid you to go back to work. Remember when you had that neck injury? That surgery was risky! I didn't even know what to do while you were in surgery, I was just waiting. You know, that happened on the job too. We do a dangerous job but we both are doing our passion. All we can do is look out for each other.'' Matt said then.

Kelly finally nodded and they smiled at each other.

''Can you please just join squad so I can keep an eye out for you?'' Severide teased Matt then.

Matt rolled his eyes overly dramatic but smirked then.

''No, I want to go back to my own truck. Herrmann is going to cover me as lieutenant two more weeks just to see how things go with being back and then I am back in the front seat.''

''That sounds a like a plan.''

Kelly said and he was really happy that Matt was coming back to work. It meant that had he had gotten so much better. Matt would never get his own lung back and he would always have to be careful but he was coming back to work, which meant that he had recovered well so far.

''Let's knock off soon, it is getting really cold and I don't want to get sick the week before going back to work.'' Matt said and they grabbed all their stuff together before walking back to the car. Matt had enjoyed being here so much and talking with Severide.

Life was valuable and he was so happy he got to share all of it with his best friend.

NOTE: So Kelly had expected that Matt needed some time to rest after Vegas but instead Matt went out on a run with him and prooved that he is ready for coming back, although Kelly is still worrie dbut he and Matt had a good conversation up on the academy roof with the view over the city...and although Kelly is still a bit worried he is just happy his friend is coming back and Matt is happy he gets to share all of this with Severide.
