A/N: Writer's block, sorry. Song: Nerina Pallot - all bets are off. Hope you enjoy, thanks for reviewing reading and whatever!
Lexie walked next to Deb.
"So, where have you been sleeping?" Deb asked.
"Mer's place." Lexie said. "Zola couldn't be more excited but she keeps asking when her uncle Jackson will join me."
"Oh. That sucks."
"I need to pick up my stuff but I don't want to bother him. The apartment is his, ya know."
"If you need anything, just say the word."
"Thank you."
All bets are off
Lay your cards on the table
Draw down the moon
All bets are off
'Cause I know you're not able
And everything will be ending soon
Owen and Cristina stood in the elevator.
"It was totally 3's fault." Cristina argued.
"No, it was not." Owen said. "He proposed to her way too quickly and we all know how that works out!"
"Oh, how?"
"Me and you, Alex and Izzie. She just did not want history to repeat itself. Is that such a bad thing?"
"We had a good run." Cristina said. "Besides, when you know, you know. She should have known."
Owen was just about to argue with that when Lexie stepped in.
"Good morning Owen." She said with a smile. "Yang."
"Good morning, Lexie." He said with a nod.
Then they were quiet for a while. It was pretty awkward, and Owen really thought Lexie knew they had been talking about her.
The doors opened again and Jackson came in.
"Good morning." He greeted awkwardly and he gave Lexie a nervous look.
They were all silent again.
"So..." Lexie started. "How have you been?"
"What do you care?" Jackson asked.
Lexie frowned, and she felt ready to cry... Again. "Oh... I'm-.. I will..." The doors opened and she got out.
"Dude, that was cold." Cristina said. "Nice job."
Owen rolled his eyes at Cristina's reaction. "That was a little mean."
"It's not like I try to be." Jackson said with a hurt look on his face. "But she can't just expect me to make small talk in an elevator. It doesn't work like that."
"Exactly." Cristina said. "That's why in every break-up there's a winner and a loser. And this guy is the winner." The doors opened again. Cristina linked arms with Jackson. "Right?" She asked him, before dragging him away.
I don't speak, I don't feel
'Cause I know that it's over
But this hurt is unreal
So I'm holding on
I don't speak, I don't feel
But I know what it takes
This is how it feels when a heart breaks
This is how it feels when a heart breaks
Lexie was pretending to write on a chart. Jo approached her.
"Hey Dr. Grey." She said. "You busy?"
"Yes." Lexie said.
"With what?"
Lexie looked up quickly from her chart, only to look down again. Jo followed her movement and she saw Jackson standing a few yards away from them.
"Oh, I see. Because stalking your ex-boyfriend is not pathetic at all." She said sarcastically.
"Sssshttt!" Lexie shushed. "Shut up. Besides, how is it fair that he is even hotter now that we are broken up?"
Jo studied him. "He looks pretty pathetic to me."
"Yeah, but you are around Alex too much."
"How are you dealing with the break-up?" Jo wondered.
"Like, not at all. I watch crime TV on Mer's couch and cry with wine. Deb keeps bringing me chocolate and telling me it will all be okay, when it totally will not be okay!"
"It's totally his fault, ya know. Alex proposed to me a while back and I said no because I wasn't ready and he understood. Jackson didn't I guess that says something about him."
"I miss him." Lexie said, her gaze shifting in his direction again and she saw he was talking to Alex now.
"Oh okay." Jo realized, she was not in the hate phase yet. "But if you miss him, why don't you just-"
"I tried talking to him, he doesn't want to see me."
"Oh, I'm sorry then."
Lexie saw a bunch of nurses walk by Jackson and Alex, swaying their hips. Alex pointed at them and Jackson shook his head. It made Lexie smile.
Just one more time
Let me dream of fresh fortune
Just one more time
Freak show divine
All the things that I can't do
Crowd and muddle my mind
Jackson was looking at Lexie who was charting, while he pretended to be reading some medical article. He saw Jo approach her and it gave him more time to look at her without getting caught, as she was now focused on Jo.
He heard a cough and saw Alex next to him.
"Dude, stalking your ex? Pretty pathetic."
"I know." Jackson responded. "But I don't care."
"Come on, haven't we been over this? You pine for a while and then you get a new girl. It's getting old."
"What are you implying?"
"That you are never single very long. You get a new girlfriend every time you blink."
"Well, I don't want a new girlfriend." He just wanted his girlfriend back.
"I'm not saying you should get a new girlfriend, but it's not a crime to play the field for a while, you know?" He said as a bunch of nurses walked by.
"Hi, Dr. Avery." They said flirtatiously.
Alex pointed at them. "One of those for just one night might do you some good, that's all I'm saying."
Jackson shook his head. "No, not this time. I might jump into relationships too quickly, but it is never like that with her."
"You sure?" Alex asked. He thought Jackson was acting like a teenage girl right now.
"Yes, I love her. And it's not gonna go away with a one-nighter with some nurse. Especially not if she keeps looking this beautiful."
"She looks pretty pathetic to me."
"She's always beautiful."
"Whatever you say man. But she wasn't grown up enough to marry you so maybe you should find someone that is."
"Shit." Jackson realized, as he remembered what happened in the elevator that morning. "I'm an ass."
Was it always ever this?
Were we condemned to an end?
A bitterness that tastes so sweet
No matter what I do
Must I always think of you
Forever, forever?
"So I thought if we do the surgery tomorrow, we have more time for research on the Peterson case in the weekend." Catherine finished with a proud smile.
"Uh huh." Lexie agreed.
"You did not get a single word of that, did you?"
"Sure I did." Lexie replied. "The surgery has been pushed back until after the weekend. Got it."
"That is not what I was saying at all."
"Sorry." Lexie apologized. "It's just that my mind is distracted. It won't happen again."
"It's okay."
"Really?" She asked, clearly surprised.
"My son will turn around you know. Just give him some time."
"Right."
"I'm serious. Things will turn around for both of you."
"How do you know?"
"It's in the eyes." Catherine shrugged.
"Why are you being so nice to me? I just crushed your son's heart. Shouldn't you hate me?"
"I like a woman that can hold her own. And as for my son, he's giving up too easily on you. Good women take a while to get. I should know."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome." Catherine said. "And don't worry too much, it's not good for your health."
"Okay..."
"I need a healthy daughter-in-law in the future."
"How does it take me rejecting your son's proposal for you to like me?" Lexie wondered.
"I'm wired specially like that."
"I see."
I don't speak, I don't feel
'Cause I know that it's over
But this hurt is unreal
So I'm holding on
I don't speak, I don't feel
But I know what it takes
This is how it feels when a heart breaks
This is how it feels when a heart breaks
When a heart breaks
Derek was walking through the hallways looking at his hands. That scrub nurse telling him he needed a manicure had really hurt his feelings. His hands didn't look that terrible, right? He was a surgeon, after all. A neurosurgeon! He'd have to ask Meredith later…
He stopped in his footsteps when he heard crying coming from a supply closet.
He debated going in. He didn't want to butt in in anyone's business, because no matter how pure his intentions were, he always came across as a McAss, like his wife put it.
He then just walked in. And when he did, he was glad he did it because his sister-in-law was sobbing on the floor.
He held his hand out and she noticed him.
"Did you need any gauze?" She asked softly with a small sob.
"No." Derek replied. "Are you okay?"
"Sure." She whispered.
He then did something weird. He pulled her into a hug and let her sob on his shoulder.
"I'm really sorry, little Grey." He said. "I've been a big ass."
"You have been." She replied. "But it's okay. So have I."
"Now dry those tears, and get it together, like you have always done."
"I can't."
"You can. This is the last time you have to that, I promise."
"I just don't want to do it alone again." She said with a sigh.
"You won't have to." He promised. "I know I am absent, but I'll be there. With my beautiful wife and kids."
"Thanks, McDreamy."
"Are you ready to get out there?"
"Nope. What if he's out there?" She said, totally serious about avoiding him from now on.
Derek chuckled.
She scoffed. "I'm sorry, is my misery amusing you?"
"No." He said quickly. "Not at all. It's just kind of ironic. The last time you were crying like this it was because you didn't love him, and now it's because you-"
"Because I do love him." She realized and she also chuckled. "God, I must be bipolar or something."
"A little." He admitted.
"Shut up."
I don't speak, I don't feel
'Cause I know that it's over
But this hurt is unreal
So I'm holding on
I don't speak, I don't feel
Lexie saw her patient, mrs. Carol Locker, age 72.
"I really do think that I am pregnant." She said. "I know that you must think that I am too old, but the women in my family are extremely fertile. It can't be, this would be my 11th child. 11 is too much."
"It is." Lexie agreed. "But I don't think you are pregnant, since you say you have been in a late menopause for almost 10 years now."
"I could be. Oh holy Lord, I do not know who the father is." Carol gushed.
"I am a surgeon, not a fertility specialist." Lexie said. "I could recommend someone for you."
"No, you seem like a good doctor. What are my options?"
"Do you need to take a pregnancy test?" Lexie asked.
The woman nodded. "I think that would be best, yes."
Lexie handed her a test. "Now, you need to avoid these kind of situations in the future. Have you been safe?"
"Safe?" The old woman asked.
"Yes, safe?"
"I don't know." She said sincerely.
"Do you know what STDs are?"
"I have chlamydiae?" She asked with a gasp.
"No. I don't know, you could. If you're not careful, you can get chlamydiae.
"Oh Lord. How do I avoid this?"
Lexie sighed. She didn't want to have 'the talk' with a 72 year old woman. "See, when two people love each other very much, they just want to be close to-"
She stopped as she heard a knock on the door.
"Lex, can I speak with you?" Jackson asked.
"Oh, mrs. Locker, this is Dr. Avery, he will talk to you about safe sex." Lexie said with a smile.
"Okay." Carol said with a nod. "And please, call me Carol."
Jackson frowned and he looked at the old woman. Apparently she needed to hear about being safe. He really didn't want to tell her, but he needed to talk to Lexie. "Okay, I will." He finally agreed. "But Lex, can I speak with you first?"
"Sure." She said, not looking forward to this conversation.
But I know what it takes
This is how it feels when a heart breaks
This is how it feels when a heart breaks
Oh, this is how it feels
So this is how it feels.
She followed him out of the exam room.
"What?" She asked, still bitter about the conversation in the elevator.
"I need to apologize about this morning." He said.
"You do." She agreed.
"I'm sorry for being mean."
"Why did you do it?" She asked, looking at her hands.
"I don't know." He admitted. "This break-up is really hitting me hard."
"Me, too." She agreed. "I miss you."
"I miss you, too." He said. "But Lex, you really hurt me. I don't think I'm going to be ready to be friendly for a while."
"You're not the only one who's hurting here." She said. "And I thought we left it on fairly good terms. At good as they can be, anyway."
"We did." He said. "And I'm sorry. I don't want to hurt you, so I apologize for that. But it's just hard seeing you and not… It's hard seeing you."
"I know." She said.
"You are really beautiful." He said, and he gave her a kiss on her cheek. "Now, I'm off to teach an old lady about being safe."
"You really don't have to do that." She said.
"Anything for you." He said, and he went into the patient's room.
A/N: SO that was it! Hope you liked even a little. Break up will be only a few more chapters, not long, not like ten chapters or something.
I do love happy endings!
Please review!
