Bodahn was surprised to see the Teyrna approach him and hastily wiped the crumbs from his tunic. "Good day your Ladyship."
"Good day Bodahn I hope you are well."
"Yes indeed your Ladyship; how may I help you today?"
"I have a commission I would like to discuss with your son; may I speak with him?"
"Of course; my boy understands well enough, just don't expect too much of a response."
Celia nodded having suspected the boy was Lyrium touched. She moved into the adjoining room following Bodahn.
"Sandal my boy; her Ladyship has a request."
Sandal smiled brightly.
Celia settled onto the seat next to him. "Sandal I wish a gift of enchantment for each of my children."
Sandal tilted his head listening intently.
"For my son I need an enchantment that will light the darkest of places and for my daughter …" Celia handed Sandal a necklace of silver with a teardrop sapphire. It was small; but it had belonged to her mother. Her father had saved coin for over a year to purchase it when she had been a little girl. "Sandal I want you to lay an enchantment within the stone; to remind my daughter of her own strength, her own worth when the world shakes around her. Is that possible?"
Sandal smiled and nodded, his fingers closing around the necklace.

Jayden's feet dragged along the floor as he retrieved his fiddle at his mother's request, he had not been near it since discovering the truth of Elouise. The instrument he had cherished and cared for so carefully was now something he wished he had never laid eyes upon. He held it as though simply touching it burned and slowly returned to the Solar dumping the fiddle on a chair and moving to the window to sit next to his mother.
Celia glanced to the discarded instrument and then to her son who was scowling at it; it's very presence seeming to bring him pain. Gently cupping his cheek Celia tilted his chin and smiled. "The instrument was not responsible for poisoning me."
"If I hadn't wanted to learn to play the fiddle; she wouldn't have been here! I'm never going to play it again!"
"Jayden I want you to stop this. You learning to play an instrument was not the cause of this." Celia held her son's gaze despite his attempts to avoid her eyes. "Jayden." Though her voice was soft he stilled.
"Maybe; but I made it easy for them! Aren't you angry with me? Even just a little bit?"
Celia gathered her son in her arms and held him close. "Why would I be angry with you? We were all taken in by her my darling. Please sweetheart; I don't want you to set aside your music because of this. When I do return to the Makers side I want Andraste herself to hear you play." She sighed at his expression of horror. "So you would allow that woman to rob you of something you held precious? No that is not our way Jayden. Now I would very much like to hear you play something."
Jayden swallowed uneasily, squirming beneath her gaze. "Mom!"
"Sweetheart you play beautifully; it would be such a waste to ignore your talent."
"But mom …" He sighed deeply knowing he wouldn't win this. He slipped from the window seat and grasped the instrument; glaring at it fiercely willing it to burst into flames. When it didn't he glanced to his mother who was watching him patiently and reluctantly brought the bow to the strings and closed his eyes.
Celia watched her son as he played a beautiful haunting melody that brought tears to her eyes. The notes seemed to tug at her heart; followed by bitter sweet memories that flowed through her mind. She caught his gaze when he finished the piece. "Why did you choose that one sweetheart?"
Jayden sighed and moved over to her dragging his feet against the floor. "It matches how I feel."
"And how do you feel?"
"Angry and sad and … and I don't know. I trusted her. I … I really liked her mom."
"Oh my darling; I feel angry and sad too, but I'm not going to give her the satisfaction of thinking about her." Celia gently tilted his chin and kissed the tip of his nose. "Now; how about playing something happy?"
Jayden obeyed without further complaint playing a piece he knew his mother loved. Each note seemed to scream inside his mind; every movement of the bow across the strings making him remember that each day Elouise had lied to him, that she had been so close to his mother because of him. He cursed his younger self; wondering if the bards had been planning to harm his mother since he had first seen them in Denerim so many years ago. He forced himself to return to the present; slowly opening his eyes as he finished the piece sure his anger had come through, but his mother was smiling.
"That was beautiful Jayden."
Jayden clasped his mother's hand. "Mom I want to show you somewhere; it's a very special place and I want to plant some of the Wilds Flower seeds there, will you come?"
"Of course."
Jayden discarded the fiddle on a chair paying it no more attention. "We just need to make a stop at the Alienage first to get Lyra, Rath and Zef."

Celia felt the thrill of pure excitement as she followed her son up the rocks into the Wyvern's secret place, the other children close behind her. Stepping lightly along the tunnel; her fingertips caressed the fluorescent moss, her eyes widening as she stopped at the ledge seeing the waterfall and the natural pool. "Holy Andraste." She gasped; following Jayden down the slope to the water's edge. Carefully slipping off her boots Celia sat down and dipped her feet in the water. She laughed as moments later Lyra, Rathnal and Zef leapt into the pool from the ledge splashing her.
Lyra approached her somewhat shyly, wiping her wet hair back from her face. "Do you like it?"
"I think it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and I promise to keep it our secret."
Jayden grinned and dived into the water.
Celia felt her heart flutter when Jayden did not immediately surface. She glanced to the other children who didn't seem to be disturbed by her son's lack of appearance.
"Jayden can hold his breath for ages." Zef stated suddenly realizing Celia was becoming anxious. "He's practiced ever since the ship."
In what seemed an eternity later Jayden resurfaced; gasping loudly.
"Maker you actually reached it!" Rathnal gasped seeing the shard of crystal that while looking like quartz had a faint blue tinge to it. He glanced to Celia. "We only ever take the loose ones."
Celia gazed at the crystal her son handed her. "It's beautiful; how deep is this pool?"
"Not that deep; but there are some caves. This was in the furthest one; I've never been able to hold my breath for long enough to get to it until today."
Celia; though slightly alarmed by her son swimming around underwater caves, saw how proud he was of his accomplishment and leaned over and pressed a kiss to the top of his head. "Thank you my darling. Shall we plant your seeds now?"
Jayden grinned and nodded; pleased he had waited to plant them so they could do it together. "Mom you can make anything grow so you choose the spot."
Celia chuckled softly. "Quite the responsibility." She rose and slowly explored the entire cave looking at where the sunlight fell and position from the pool until she chose a spot just to the right of the waterfall where the spray would gently reach the seeds and it would be shaded, but still receive the sunlight.
Lyra smiled and glanced to Jayden; he had picked the same spot weeks earlier. They all helped to carefully dig up the earth to prepare it.
Celia pulled out the crystal from her pocket and held it for a moment before surprising the children by placing it in the soil where they were going to place the seeds. She glanced to Jayden and gave him a dazzling smile. "I think it will help them to grow."
"Are you sure you don't want to take it with you?"
Celia shook her head. "Its purpose is here."
They carefully planted the seeds, the light mist of the waterfall soaking into the soil. Jayden gazed at his mother for a moment simply delighting in the love that seemed to radiate out from her.

Loghain wandered into the Great Hall that evening finding his wife and son sitting amid the majority of his maps of Ferelden. He moved over to them amused that they were so deep in their discussion they didn't hear him. He realised they were discussing terrain and curious he cleared his throat smiling as they glanced up at him. "I wondered where all my maps had gone."
Jayden winced. "Do you need them dad? Can we keep one I've nearly worked out my route?"
Loghain settled on his knees. "Route? Where are you going?"
"Well mom and I have been talking about the best places to plant the seeds. I want to give them the best chance to grow so if we plant them in lots of places we can find out where they like to grow and then make sure they are protected. It would be awesome if they grow everywhere, but that isn't likely. I've planted some in the garden here and Ali took some to plant in Bann Teagan's estate a while back and he said he would plant some in the woods nearby in case they grew better there. I was thinking we could plant some in Highever, Denerim, Orzammar and the Hinterlands."
"Somehow I don't think they will grow in Orzammar."
Jayden gave his father a cheeky grin. "Not in Orzammar dad, but I bet there are lots of caves in the mountains. I just need one that is sheltered from the snow; but let's in sunlight and some rain. I need to find out where they will grow the best and besides it is more important that we find a way for them to grow near Orzammar considering the dwarves fight the Darkspawn every day."
Loghain gazed at his son and wondered if there was anyone in their world he didn't concern himself about. "Well perhaps I can make some suggestions on specific places; I have travelled a great deal of Ferelden."
Jayden moved closer to his father and picked up his quill and parchment going through the route, making quick sketches and notes on all the suggestions made. When the bell for evening meal rang he rolled up his parchment and tucked it carefully in his belt and returned the maps to his father's study. He ran to his room and put the parchment in the chest at the bottom of his bed. When he returned to the hall he hesitated seeing his parents holding hands, his father initiating a soft kiss. Jayden felt a deep ache in his heart and while he rarely prayed; he went out into the garden and knelt beside his mother's rose bushes and prayed to Andraste to guide him and to help the mages and healers find a cure so that his mother would survive.

Isolde held Connor in her arms as she hurried across the courtyard; trembling as Eamon wrapped his arms around them.
"It is good to be home."
"What happened?"
"You are no longer under house arrest; Mother Katrine confirmed that you had no knowledge of what was happening." He shuddered. "She finally admitted her own contact with the previous Emperor, though she maintains she does not know who sent the most recent orders. She will spend what remains of her life in Fort Drakon."
Isolde frowned. "You sound as though that will not be long."
Eamon rubbed his head. "Maric is … Rowan's death hit him hard and now knowing she was murdered ..."
Swallowing uneasily Isolde held Conner tighter to her, easing her hold as he began to squirm. "But we are safe?"
"He knew I had been corresponding with Celene. We must walk carefully Isolde. Maric is hungry for vengeance and I do not wish to find ourselves in his path."
Isolde gazed at her son; she had her family and they were all that mattered and she would do anything to protect them.

Anora was dazzled by the sheer amount of energy her mother seemed to have. She never seemed to be tired and slept as little as possible to prevent wasting a second. The time she had spent with her had left Anora in awe and she realised that somehow she felt more confident and capable in her own abilities. She soaked up the insights her mother gave her into being the wife of a powerful man; of those ways that she could support Cailan when the time came, but also support her people. Anora was astounded; she had never realised until this moment just how much her mother did for the people of Gwaren. She knew almost every family; their struggles and their joys. She ensured that those poorer families never went hungry and were given opportunities to ensure they could look after their loved ones.
"Your role should be to empower your people my darling. If a man or woman cannot find work to feed their family; desperation will guide them leading to theft and potentially violence. Ensure your people have work; that their families are taken care of, that there is enough food for all even during the toughest times and you will have a people who will respect you and you will have their loyalty. Leave them to suffer and they will turn on you. As Queen you will have an entire country to oversee. You job is to support Cailan to keep the nobles in line and ensure they look after their people." She smiled. "Gently though Anora; do not alienate him, you must be a support for each other, not an obstacle, you will face enough of those."
"But no-one knows what you do! I've never seen you acknowledged for any of this!"
"Do I need to be acknowledged for my duty?"
"You should be!"
"Anora if you expect as Queen that you will be acknowledged for everything you do you will be sorely disappointed." She smiled and gently patted Anora's hand. "You will be a good Queen Anora; but I know you have the potential to be a great one. Which one you will be is your choice."
Anora gazed at their hands and impulsively hugged her mother. "I love you mom."
"I love you too my darling; you make me so proud." Celia carefully retrieved the box from her cabinet and removed the stopper from the vial, allowing a single drop of the amber liquid to fall onto her tongue. She felt strength fill her limbs and a clarity of self that she had rarely experienced in her youth. Flemeth's potion was more than time; it was possibility. Celia glanced to her reflection; she not only felt younger, she actually looked younger, vital and full of life. She glanced up seeing Anora staring at the vial with a pained look. She held out her hand smiling as Anora's fingers closed over hers. "Anora this is a blessing; yet you look at it with sorrow and pain."
"Every day we have less time." Anora whispered.
"From this moment you will not see this vial; I will not have you fixating on how much time I have left."
"But if we haven't found a cure by the time you take the last drop you'll die!" Anora cried out.
Celia gently cupped her daughter's cheek catching a tear with her thumb. "Anora believe me I know the consequences if a cure is not found in time; but I will not spend my days worrying about something I can do nothing about. We have the most knowledgeable healers and the most talented mages working on this. I trust if a cure can be created they will do it, but my darling I also know that a cure may not be discovered. This vial and the liquid within is a gift. Each drop is a blessing of more beautiful moments. Do not wear it as a chain around your neck. "
Anora wiped the tears from her eyes and nodded unable to speak. Her mother deserved to be happy and she had no intention of being the one to take that from her.

Wynne felt uncomfortable despite the light fabric of her robe; it was unusually humid as summer flowed into autumn. She frowned and moved to the window hoping to feel a cool breeze noting her Templar guardians in the courtyard. She winced at the memory of her argument with Ser Dominic barely a week into their arrival in Gwaren.
"Senior Enchanter you need to focus on why you are here." Dominic stated gently. "Templars will be sent to the Wilds and if this apostate is there they will find her."
Wynne scowled. "That does not deal with the matter of the potion."
"Wynne you have not proven it was created with blood magic."
"Because they will not let me near it!" After her harsh confrontation with the boy and her less than subtle demands for the potion to be tested, the King himself had demanded that the potion be left alone.
"Perhaps a little more tact would have secured a different outcome."
Wynne glared. "It is blood magic I know it; how can you not take that seriously?"
"Wynne enough." Dominic snapped.
She glanced to the courtyard where Jayden was standing with his friends. "He may look innocent; but he is not."
"Since you cannot control yourself perhaps we should return to Kinloch Hold and you can do your research there. Perhaps within the Circle you will find the focus to work on a cure that here you seem to lack."
Wynne opened her mouth to protest; but Dominic's expression told her they were leaving. She glared down at the courtyard. "I will have the truth." She muttered.
When she had calmed down she had managed to persuade Dominic to let her stay; after all she would gain nothing by returning to the Circle. As another week passed by her attention turned more and more to the truth potion. She had heard rumours that such things existed; but to know it was real, that she was so near to it left her deeply frustrated. Its potential applications could not be ignored; not only could it be used to confirm users of blood magic, in cases of abuse to mages the Templars involved could be made to tell the truth of their part, ensuring mages received the justice that was sometimes lacking. She had tried to approach Jayden on several occasions and each time she found herself left feeling utterly frustrated. He was irritatingly charming and polite and she wanted to throttle him. It was worse when he was with his elven friends; the four gazing up at her oozing charm and helpful politeness, only to leave her feeling confused and a little dazed. Asking her accompanying Templars for support was less helpful that she had expected, both men were utterly charmed by the boy and rightly unhappy with how she had initially reacted to him.
Wynne sighed and sank onto the window seat; the fault of course was hers. If she had only treaded carefully; not focused on the potion keeping his mother alive, not been so determined to find the truth at any cost things might have been different. She had heard him speaking with Cullen; the two conversing easily on a variety of topics. She realised the boy cared deeply about mages; and she now had the sneaking suspicion if she had not spoken to him as she had, if she had instead waited until her mind had calmed and acknowledged the foolishness of wanting to interrogate the boy, if she had simply gone to him and not his father, he would have given her at least some of it. Oh Wynne; have you truly learnt nothing from your mistakes with Aneirin? Where is your patience now? You see a stubborn boy who is being difficult; instead of a child trying to save his mother. She sighed deeply; tomorrow they would leave for the Circle; the poison was horrifyingly resistant and she needed tomes that could only be accessed at the Circle, besides which she knew of many competent mages who could assist her. Perhaps if they found a cure in time the boy would be willing to listen to her.

Cullen found himself reluctant to leave having become fond of Jayden in their stay. They had talked about everything from the Chantry and the Circles to where they would most like to travel to in Thedas. He helped Wynne into the carriage and smiled when Jayden moved to him.
"I've really enjoyed meeting you Ser Cullen; I hope there are lots of Templars like you and Ser Dominic."
Cullen felt the heat rush to his cheeks and cleared his throat. "Well … um that's nice of you to say."
Jayden moved a step closer. "Don't ever forget that mages are people too Ser Cullen."
"You have my word."
"I hope we meet again one day."
"As do I." Cullen smiled and stepped into the carriage having no doubt that their paths would somehow cross again.

Kingsway had been the warmest it had been in years; the evenings cooled only slightly by a faint breeze. Celia gazed across the moonlit beach smiling to herself as Jayden and his friends played at the water's edge, delighted to be allowed to stay up so late. Her gaze drifted to her son and the look of complete happiness on his face as he gazed at Lyra; seeing their hands clasp, her look mirroring his own. Her breath was taken away by how perfect they looked together. She glanced to her husband who seemed oblivious and back to the pair who were splashing Zef; darting away when Simon and Rathnal came to his rescue. While she had once feared Jayden would fall for Lyra; in this moment it seemed the most natural course and her mind fell to the problem of how to ensure they had the opportunity to be together if they truly wished it.
When the children were finally persuaded to return home; Celia kicked off her shoes and walked barefoot in the sand, Loghain's arm resting around her waist. Pale rays of moonlight glistened in her hair as she tilted her face upwards, gazing at the stars. "I would like the families to come together before the end." She felt Loghain's arm twitch. Stopping she turned to her husband gently cupping his cheek. "I am not giving up; but it would be foolish of me to waste the time given to me. I would spend time with our friends before it is too late. Tyris believes there is enough of the potion to last me until the last day of this year. Perhaps we could invite the families at the beginning of Haring for a week or two."
Loghain nodded unable to speak.
"I know this isn't easy love; but I don't want to spend my time worrying about whether an antidote will be found in time, I want to live what life I have."
"I know. Forgive me I …"
"It is cruel; you watched Rowan die and now you must watch me."
"Celia …" He swallowed painfully. "I feel so damn helpless."
"Just spend this time with me. That is all I need."
Loghain steeled himself and smiled. "So my lady; what would you like to do this evening?"
Celia leaned over and whispered softly in his ear; she smirked slightly as her husband actually flushed. "Well it's nice to know after all these years I can still surprise you."
Loghain gently embraced her. "Your wish my Lady is my command." He trembled as Celia's lips pressed to his basking in the hunger of her touch. Gone was the woman who could barely lift her hand to touch his and in her place was a woman of desire and appetite for life. He had watched his wife in awe; she threw herself into life in a way that reminded him of their son. Indeed it was Jayden she followed; exploring the woods, swimming in the sea, riding bareback along the coast. He had felt pulled along in her wake, grasping at each moment as a drowning man grasps onto the rope that could save him. Now here she was having coaxed him down to a sheltered cove in the middle of the night; the fierce heat of her body banishing the colder temperature of the night air. Loghain gazed at his wife and realised she had a fire that burned as brightly as Rowan's had. All their years together; all the love they had shared and yet in this one moment as he cradled her body to his, he realised he had never truly seen his wife. Knowing the end of her life was fast approaching had given Celia a freedom he had never imagined possible and he bathed in her strength; the light that seemed to shine from her and he felt himself strengthened by her. He returned her hunger with his own; surrendering all he was, giving everything of himself, feeling himself reborn in every moment he was with her.

Anders quickly penned a few notes and added a sliver of a gnarled root he had spent two hours looking for in the stockroom. He gave a hiss of frustration as the vial exploded. "Damn it!" He glanced to Karl who was looking just as frustrated. "Is this some kind of test?" Anders snapped. "The ingredients in this poison should not be able to exist together. I've tried every combination of the separate antidotes and none of them are even stable enough for me to test on the poison. Is this Wynne's idea of teaching me a lesson for annoying Templars?"
"Hardly Anders."
Anders span and glared at Wynne as she seemed to glide over to him. "This is impossible!" He snapped.
Wynne sank onto a seat looking genuinely crestfallen. "I fear you are right."
Anders glanced to Karl and then gently rested his hand on Wynne's. "Are you alright?"
"Not really. Anders this poison is unfortunately very real and as we speak Teyrna Mac Tir is dying. We mages and the healers working in Gwaren are her only hope."
Anders paled and sank into a seat next to her. "How much time do we have?"
"Not long enough."
Anders stared at the ingredients and rubbed his raw eyes. "We are missing something. Are you sure we have all of the ingredients, is there a particular mixing agent that perhaps has additional ingredients?"
Wynne looked up sharply. "Maker's breath I had not even considered ... I will send word to Gwaren at once; in the meantime prepare every mixing agent we have a recipe for and pray the Maker guides us."

Autumn raced into winter; the days becoming steadily colder. Celia gazed at the runestone Bodahn had delivered to her that morning; it had raised her spirits after receiving the letter from Wynne to say that as yet they remained unsuccessful in their endeavour. She was relieved the runestone was ready; having wanted to give the gift to her son on his name-day, which was less than a week away. She gazed at the portrait above the fireplace in the Great Hall recently painted to capture their family while they could. The artist had caught Anora's beautiful smile; Aelfraud's wise gaze, Loghain's protectiveness and Celia's joy in being with her family, in Jayden he had somehow captured the mischief and bravery that characterized him. Celia smiled as she sensed Loghain approaching.
"Here you are." He murmured nuzzling at her neck.
Celia chuckled and leaned against him. "What a blessing our children are." She murmured.
Loghain smiled. "Ferocity notwithstanding."
"They can be quite fierce can't they?" She glanced up to her husband. "Rather like yourself."
Loghain pressed a kiss to her forehead to hide his expression; if ferocity could have banished the poison it would have barely touched her.

Pulling on a thick robe to ward off the cold Wynne bypassed breakfast and went straight to the room they were using to work on the poison. She allowed herself a slight smile. Jowan and Eloen were preparing ingredients to save Anders and Karl time. They had also roped in Philip, Tessa and Maris who were meticulously recording each experiment, several running concurrently to save time. She winced as three vials exploded.
Anders kicked over a chair in fury and pressed his hands hard to the desk closing his eyes trying to deep breathe. "Whoever came up with this poison needs a good bloody dose of it themselves."
"Should the opportunity arise I will be happy to arrange it." Wynne stated with a smile.
Karl sighed. "I honestly don't know what else to try. We get an antidote stable but it never has all the ingredients needed to cure and making different potions to do it in stages doesn't work."
Wynne winced. "Oh Karl you used the rats after all."
"Well what did you expect him to do; you wouldn't let him test it on Templars." Anders muttered.
Wynne sighed realising Anders had been none too happy about it either. "Well take a break and come back tomorrow; you may see a new way with fresh eyes."
The mages cleared up and then reluctantly left the room too exhausted to argue.
Anders hesitated and moved back to Wynne who was reading through their notes. "Maybe we are looking at this from the wrong angle."
"Go on."
"Is there nothing we can do as spirit healers?"
"Nothing I did had any effect. I have not the strength and neither Karl, or yourself possess the skill to try anything of a more complex nature."
"What about mages in other Circles?"
Wynne sighed. "Unavailable."
Anders jaw clenched. "Then stop having me concentrate on the simple spells and teach me what I need to know!"

Soft flakes of snow slid down the windows bringing a smile to Celia's lips. She moved from the bed and flung open the window catching a few snowflakes on her hand; turning at the soft chuckle, to find her husband watching her.
"I don't think I have seen you this excited about snow since you were a girl."
Celia laughed and pulled on a robe. "I feel like a girl." She grasped Loghain's hand and pulled him from the bed. "Let's not waste a beautiful day." Jayden had still beaten them to the garden despite their early rise and was lying in the snow making various shapes and patterns. Celia smiled at her son's delighted laugh as she lay down next to him making some of her own.
Anora and Aelfraud joined them soon after and by the time they went indoors for breakfast their cheeks were pink with the cold. They settled next to the fire eating porridge and honey, which remained a family favourite and welcome warmth after the chill of the snow.
Jayden was startled when his mother tugged him over and handed him a small package.
Celia glanced at him curiously. "Why the surprised expression; it is your name-day after all?"
Jayden flushed slightly. "Well I just thought … I mean I …" He chewed anxiously at his lip. "Having you here is all I wanted."
Smiling and blinking back the tears Celia gently hugged her son. "Open it."
Jayden grinned and carefully unwrapped the package. In the small box was what appeared to be a runestone; it was a deep moss green flecked with gold and deep within the centre was a circle of lyrium. Carefully taking it from the box Jayden stared at it in awe feeling a soft thrum against his fingers. He gazed at it startled as the golden flecks within began to glow. "What's it doing?" He whispered.
Celia smiled. "If you ever find yourself in dark places; spider infested Thaig's for instance, it will light your way." She chuckled at her son's delighted gaze. "I am of course joking about you wandering around the Deep Roads; I think you have done enough of that."
Jayden tightened his grip on the rune watching as the light spilled out and seemed to fill the whole room. He eased his grip watching the light dim and carefully put it back into its box. "It's brilliant." He gave everyone a hug before persuading them to go out into the garden again; delighted when Lyra, Zef, Rathnal and Simon joined them, quickly splitting into teams everyone making snowballs as fast as they could. Aelfraud watched them in amusement even throwing a snowball or two himself.
When everyone was too cold to stay outside they moved indoors to heat up with warm milk and spiced fruit buns made especially that morning. Lyra nestled against Jayden wrapped in his blanket; she wasn't that cold but she wasn't about to admit it. She smiled as she felt Jayden's hand reach for hers. She longed for the contact and spent most of her time wishing he would just kiss her already; but he hadn't tried to kiss her again since before he had gone to find the Dalish and she had a good idea it was because of Zef. While she loved her brother deeply; she sometimes wished he wasn't quite so protective. She saw Jayden glance to his mother seeing a flicker of pain in his eyes and gently squeezed his hand suddenly feeling incredibly selfish. How could she expect Jayden to be thinking about her when she knew he spent most of his time trying to think of ways to save his mother. She squeezed his hand again and mirrored his smile, he was worth waiting for.

Ellowyn grinned as Bann Teagan's estate came into view; they were to travel with the Bann and Alistair to Gwaren and the twins could barely hold in their excitement, Fergus and Oriana teasing them mercilessly. She gave a squeal of delight as she spied Alistair at the gate watching for their arrival, Kolby sitting waiting patiently by his side despite the snow that had been falling since dawn. She waved excitedly; leaping out of the carriage as it entered the courtyard, despite her mother's warning to wait until they stopped Aedan right behind her. Ellowyn sprang forward and hugged Alistair giving him a peck on the cheek expecting him to blush. She raised an eyebrow as he simply grinned. "No blush Ali; that's no fun."
Alistair grinned and clasped Aedan's arm the two giving each other a tight hug. He gave Kolby an approving smile. "Come on then Kolby say hello."
Kolby darted forward jumping up at Aedan leaving a trail of slobber over his face. He darted over to Ellowyn and sat in front of her his stumpy tail thumping against the ground as he gazed at her.
Ellowyn gave a delighted smile and gave his silky ears some attention. "Thanks Kolby, mom would have killed me if I'd got this dress dirty." She said loudly, before turning back to Kolby. "Alright boy jump on me because if I get this muddy I can wear proper travelling clothes that don't include dresses."
Kolby wined and glanced to Alistair.
Alistair chuckled. "Kolby she's a damsel in distress, act accordingly."
Kolby barked excitedly and jumped up knocking Ellowyn into the snow covered dirt.
"Ellowyn Cousland!" Eleanor muttered in exasperation; managing to hide her amusement at the exchange.
"Sorry mom."
"Well we are staying here tonight; perhaps the dress can be cleaned for tomorrow." She kept a neutral face as Ellowyn huffed, winking to Alistair and Aedan.
Ellowyn saw the boys trying to hold in their laughter and span on her mother. "Mom!"
Eleanor chuckled softly. "Tomorrow you may wear what you please, but at least today can you look like the young lady you are supposed to be."
Ellowyn grinned. "Just for today."
The children raced passed Teagan who chuckled and moved to greet the rest of the Couslands. "I was hoping for better weather." He stated glancing at the heavy sky.
Bryce nodded. "I think we should get as early a start tomorrow as possible."
"I agree; but for now come and warm yourselves, I believe Sophie is cooking something delightful as we speak." They entered the main hall stamping the snow off their boots. Teagan noticed Ratcatcher stalking after the children and groaned. "Maker now there will be trouble."
Eleanor chuckled. "Is Ratcatcher still offended by Kolby's presence?"
"Indeed; he plagues that poor mabari's life, but of course Kolby always goes back for more." They turned at the sound of a hiss seeing Ratcatcher swipe his claws across Kolby's nose before the chase was on; Kolby hurtling down the corridor after his tormentor.
"Kolby you know you always come off worse!" Alistair cried out before racing after them, Ellowyn and Aedan at his heels. They hesitated as they heard screams from the kitchen; Kolby slinking back through to the hallway a cabbage leaf on his head. "Kolby!" Alistair groaned. He winced as seconds later Sophie emerged from the kitchen, face flushed and holding the struggling cat before shoving him into Alistair's arms.
"Really Alistair if you can't control these animals …" She sighed as Alistair's shoulders slumped; his eyes cast downwards. No matter the years that had passed since his first arrival he could still be reduced to that insecure young boy at a single sentence. She allowed a slight smile as Kolby whined softly and even Ratcatcher gave what could be taken for an apologetic meow. "Aye well apology accepted I suppose. Come on Alistair you can help me clean up the mess."
Alistair carefully put Ratcatcher down warning both animals not to get into any more trouble.
Ellowyn grinned and scooped up the startled cat scratching him under the chin.
There was a moment when Ratcatcher considered flexing his claws; but the scratching was quite nice and she was holding him so he was comfortable, so he decided instead to settle into her arms.
Aedan chuckled and nudged Kolby in Ellowyn's direction. "Go with Ell and I'll help Ali."
Alistair grinned as he and Aedan headed into the kitchen and set about cleaning the mess. "Thanks." He whispered.
Aedan grinned broadly. "I'm doing it for selfish reasons; Sophie makes the most amazing cookies."
Sophie heard them and chuckled. "On the bench there young Master Cousland, baked fresh this morning."
Aedan grinned; but helped Alistair clean up Ratcatcher and Kolby's mess first. "I wish I had a mabari."
"Why don't you ask your parents?"
"Nan put her foot down and said she is not picking up after mabari's too and we need to show we are responsible before we should even consider it."
Alistair chuckled remembering how stern Nan could be from a visit to Highever a few months earlier, but like the twins he had adored her almost immediately. In the few days of their stay she had given him what he had always craved, motherly affection. He had basked in it and did whatever he could to please her; startling the woman who was more used to dealing with mischief and mayhem. "I bet she wouldn't mind really; she seemed to like Kolby."
Aedan grinned. "That's what I said; so hopefully in the summer we might get a chance to see if any of the new pups will imprint."
"Awesome."
Sophie smiled. "Go on the pair of you and don't eat all of those cookies, don't want you spoiling your appetite."
Aedan gave a charming smile. "I always have room for your food Sophie."
"Go on; away with you." She chuckled shooing them out smiling to herself at their delighted grins. She turned back to her preparations; her thoughts idly wandering to Alistair and hoping his friendship with the Couslands would last, the boy deserved that. She was never sure what had happened at Redcliffe that had ended up with him coming to live with Teagan; but whatever it was had been enough to leave the boy fearful and it had taken some time to break down those barriers and it almost broke her heart to see him slip back there, though thankfully it didn't happen too often. She shook her head to rid herself of her darker thoughts, well he was here now and there wasn't one person on the estate who didn't adore the boy. She smiled to herself and there wasn't anyone who doubted he would make a fine knight one day.

Cailan extended his hand and helped Delilah onto the ship; Nathaniel was walking at a slight distance behind them, their fathers already on the ship. Thomas was staying at the Arl of Denerim's estate and he was relieved he would not have to deal with his presence too. He glanced to Nathaniel and resolved to ensure their time together wasn't awkward; Anora had devoted herself to him after all, but he couldn't help feeling a knot of anxiety in his stomach that they would all be together. He didn't doubt Anora's sincerity; but he knew love was not so easily dismissed and he wasn't sure he could compete with the dark haired, silent grace of Nathaniel Howe. He inwardly sighed feeling the flare of jealousy and tucked it away; this time wasn't about them, it was about Teyrna Celia and he for one had no intention of causing any discomfort. Besides which; they would have no choice but to get on during the voyage and it would be good preparation. He shivered as a snowflake landed on his nose.
"I wish we were going by land." Delilah murmured wrapping her cloak tighter around herself.
"The sea should be quicker." Cailan stated softly, though given the dark sky and the even darker waves he was starting to doubt that.
Delilah shivered as the snow fall became steadily heavier. "Cailan would you shown me to my cabin?"
"Of course." He led her carefully through the ship pleased that her trunk was already there. He pointed out his own cabin which was near the stairs. "I'll be there; or on deck if you need anything."
Delilah smiled and curtsied. "Thank you Cailan."
Cailan chuckled softly; nodding to Nathaniel as he passed him.
Delilah caught Nathaniel's arm and tugged him into her cabin. "What is going on with you and Cailan?"
Nathaniel winced. "Nothing; it's been awhile since we have seen each other that is all."
Keeping her voice a whisper she leaned closer. "And it's over between you and Anora?"
Nathaniel sighed deeply. "Yes Delilah."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes; I made it clear the last time we met."
Delilah gently clasped her hand. "I know it is awful Nate; but it is for the best. I know this will be difficult for you; but I am there too and if things become uncomfortable we can wander off for a while."
Nathaniel smiled and gave Delilah a gentle hug. "Always watching out for me."
"Always dear brother."

As the weather grew steadily worse; Bryce spoke with Teagan and they agreed that getting to Lothering to wait out the storm was their best course of action, the snow was becoming almost too deep for the carriages to continue, but they managed to reach the village by late evening, They resigned themselves to spending a night or two hoping the roads would become more accessible.
Alistair stepped down from the carriage as they stopped at the tavern. Glancing towards the windmill his eyes widened as he saw a young girl with a basket speaking to an older boy.
Teagan moved to Alistair's side. "Is something wrong Alistair?"
"I think it's Bethany and Garrett." Alistair whispered before he could think to be quiet.
"Ah; well why don't you find out, we will be at this Inn, be back in an hour for evening meal." He hunkered down and caught hold of Kolby. "Keep Alistair safe." He chuckled as Kolby licked his face.
Alistair headed off, the twins too busy with their parents to notice he had gone. Alistair felt this heart pound willing the girl to turn so he could see her face fully before he made a fool of himself. He hesitated when she did turn; their eyes locking. He saw a flare of recognition in her eyes before she pushed her basket into the older boy's hands and ran across the snow. Alistair grinned and ran to meet her wrapping his arms around her waist and swinging her around.
"It's really you!" Bethany gasped; feeling the flush rise from her toes and was grateful for the cold to cool her cheeks.
Alistair gazed at her momentarily spellbound. While he had etched every feature of Bethany's face into his mind he realised it paled in comparison to the reality. Rich honey coloured eyes seemed to draw him in. She was wearing her hair in a single plait and he found himself wanting to undo it and see her hair frame her face. He flushed at his thoughts. "So this is where you've been." He managed to say.
Bethany nodded and grinned; his voice was deeper now and she idly thought she could listen to him talk all day. "Is this your mabari?" She glanced to the patiently waiting animal and smiled.
"This is Kolby. Kolby this is Bethany."
Kolby gave Bethany's hand a gentle lick and nudged her happily as she stroked his head.
"He's beautiful." She clasped Alistair's hand tightly. "Come and see everyone, Carver will be thrilled to see you."
Alistair hurried with her; Kolby at their heels; grinning as Garrett ruffled his hair, his heart pounding as Bethany kept a tight grip on his hand. Malcolm and Leandra greeted him warmly and he grinned broadly as Carver entered, his arms laden with firewood.
Carver's eyes widened before he dropped the wood and raced over to Alistair gripping his arm. "I can't believe you're here!"
The allotted hour passed too quickly and Alistair promised to return the following day. He raced back to the tavern just in time for evening meal.
Teagan glanced over at Alistair quite sure he had never seen him look so happy, restless and anxious all at the one time. "Did you have fun?"
Alistair nodded eagerly. "Can I see them again tomorrow; we really didn't have enough time to catch up?"
"Of course. I think we will be here for a few days at least with this weather."

Nathaniel wrapped his arms around him and snugged into a thick fur coat as the snow blew around the deck. The sea felt restless, the icy waves lashing against the ship threatening to break into a storm at any moment. The sky was a light grey; looking heavy enough that he suspected the snow would last all day.
"I think our journey will take longer than a week." Cailan stated moving to his side.
Nathaniel nodded feeling anxiety tighten its grip at his throat. "I suspect it will; if the wind doesn't change we might be better going back to Denerim and travelling by land."
Cailan glanced to Nathaniel his gloved hands gripping the side as he glanced down to the waves as they struck the ship. "It will be nice to have everyone together."
"It will … well minus my brother of course; though I would imagine him not accompanying us will be something of a relief to everyone else."
Cailan caught the slightly defensive tone and sighed. "I would imagine Thomas has grown up since the incident with the mabari."
Nathaniel glanced to the prince realizing how much it would have taken for him to say that. He sighed and shook his head. "Unfortunately not really; he is still friends with Vaughan and they aren't exactly a good influence on each other." He glanced around them relieved that his father was nowhere in sight. "I've tried; but I'm not father and Thomas doesn't listen to me."
"How Thomas behaves is not your fault Nathaniel."
Nathaniel smiled at the sincere tone. "It does reflect on me and the family however." He sighed. "My family isn't perfect and Makers knows we have had some less than desirable relatives, but I want better for Thomas and he isn't helping himself."
"Thomas must go his own path as we all must. Come on its freezing out here; how about a game of Wicked Grace?"
"I'd love too." Nathaniel grinned; realising he meant it.

Bethany grabbed Alistair's hand and slid down the bank hastily trying to cover their tracks from the Cousland twins and Carver who were hunting for them. They had been delayed for a whole week in Lothering and she had grasped every moment she could with Alistair. Their friendship was easy as it had always been, but she was not blind to the longing she also felt that had nothing to do with friendship. She tugged them into a small sheltered cave by the stream; taking the opportunity to simply look at him. Maker he's gorgeous. He would be leaving in the morning and she had no idea how long it would be before she saw him again. Gathering her courage she whispered his name and as he turned to her she pressed her lips to his. It was the briefest touch before Bethany drew back horrified by her boldness; the pair staring wide eyed at each other, their hearts pounding fiercely.
"Gotcha!" Carver yelled leaping onto the sandy ground just outside of the cave.
The pair sprang apart; Bethany flushing furiously.
"What's up with you two?" Carver asked moving into their shelter.
"N … nothing." Alistair stammered the flush rising from his neck.
Carver frowned slightly. "Yes there is. What were you doing?"
"Nothing!" Bethany mumbled giving her brother a pleading look.
Carver crossed his arms and glared. "Friends and twins are not supposed to keep secrets from each other!"
Alistair felt his face turn scarlet. "We … um … we kissed."
Carver smirked. "Too easy." He leapt out of the way of his sister chuckling at her growl. "I'm not going to tell!" He laughed. "Besides you think about him every day, you'll probably get married." Carver backed away laughing to himself.
Bethany kept her eyes glued to the ground. "He's an idiot."
Alistair reached out and clasped her hand. "Maybe; but I've thought about you every day too."
Bethany felt her cheeks flush; the smile so wide it made her jaw ache.

The carriages were packed and the Couslands and Teagan were waiting for Alistair. Kolby whined softly.
"Go and find him." Teagan chuckled.
Kolby bounded off; snow kicked up by his paws as he raced down to the stream, barking excitedly when he saw Alistair and Bethany hugging.
Alistair pulled back and smiled. "I guess I'm late."
Bethany untied the scarf she wore around her neck and wound it around his wrist. "If you were a knight that would be my favour." She whispered.
Alistair leaned forward and pressed his lips lightly to Bethany's, the kiss over almost before it had started. "One day I will be a Knight and … and maybe more to you."
Bethany smiled at his hopeful tone and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Come back soon Ali; don't make me wait until you are a knight to see you again." She pressed a kiss to his cheek and stood back.
Alistair grinned and bowed. "Soon then Lady Bethany."
Bethany chuckled and gave him a gentle push. "Go before they come looking for you." She watched him until he was out of sight; Kolby bounding along at his heels, before she returned home and lay on her bed imagining a future where Alistair came back for her. She sighed happily wondering if it would ever be anything more than a dream.

Rendon took a sip of the warm spiced wine and glanced to Maric who was glancing at the map. "Are we far off course?"
"The Captain is confident he can pull us back, but it is adding more time to our journey."
"Since there is little we can do about it we must allow the Captain to do his job."
Maric smiled and settled on a chair. "Loghain would be pacing; probably cursing the sea if he was here."
Rendon smiled. "He is a man of great passion."
"That he is." Maric rubbed his forehead. "We both know the pain of losing our wives Rendon … I am afraid for him and for Celia."
"You don't think a cure will be found?"
"I have no doubt one will eventually; but if it will be in time to save Celia only the Maker knows." The men sat quietly sipping their wine for several moments. "All is well in Amaranthine I hope."
"Well enough. Extra guards means extra coin and higher taxes is pleasing to few."
Maric nodded. "What about your trading plans with the Free Marches?"
Rendon rolled his eyes. "They never agree on anything so working out trade agreements with one means potentially alienating another, it is a political nightmare."
Maric chuckled softly. "Is that a hint for me to throw my political weight in their direction?"
Rendon smiled. "Perhaps; but I am hoping to come to an arrangement we can all operate with."
Maric raised his glass. "To successful political alliances."
Rendon smiled; Maric was a good man and looked out for his friends and allies and he knew that while their conversation had been light hearted, Maric would support him with the trade agreements if it came to that."

Loghain paced restlessly distressed by the delay the weather was clearly causing in their friends arrival. He cursed himself wishing he had invited them sooner, glancing to the vial as Celia took a drop and realised their time together was now limited to days. He gave his wife a kiss and told her he would be back shortly. His mood was foul by the time he reached the building the healers lived and worked in. They all glanced up as he entered and his temper evaporated; all of them looked exhausted; pale and worried.
Serin hurried to the Teyrn's side. "Your Lordship is it the Teyrna?"
"She is well for the moment; I had hoped there would be news, we have days not weeks."
Serin swallowed painfully. "We will of course inform you as soon as we have anything." He watched the Teyrn leave frustrated that despite the months that had passed; they were still no closer to a cure. He rubbed his eyes trying to clear his vision; dragging himself back to his own workspace, reading once more through their collective notes, hoping to gleam some insight they had thus far missed.

Anders found himself shaken awake by Karl who was looking at him in concern. "Is it morning already?" He groaned pushing back from the desk and standing arching his back to relieve the tension.
"No but it's late you should be in bed."
Anders managed to dredge up a cheeky grin despite his exhaustion. "Are you offering to take me?"
Karl chuckled softly. "Even exhausted you are an incorrigible flirt."
"Your fault." Anders mumbled through his hand as he attempted to stifle a yawn. "You corrupted me." The pair glanced up as a Templar entered the room both tensing, relaxing slightly as Cullen took off his helmet.
"How's it going?" Cullen asked; noting the exhaustion clear in the dark bruise like marks beneath Anders eyes and the tangle of his hair.
Anders had realised very quickly after Wynne's return that Cullen had become as invested in them finding a cure as they were. Wynne had explained he had built up a rapport with the Teyrna's son and it was clear he did not wish the boy to lose his mother. He sighed deeply. "My skills are developing; but nothing I do has any effect." He raked his fingers slowly through his hair. "I won't give up though." He was startled as Cullen gave him a grateful smile and was more surprised when he returned it.
"Get some rest." Cullen urged as he quietly left the room.
"He's a good man." Karl stated softly.
"Just a shame he's a Templar." Anders replied; but the words were said without his usual sharp edge, or bitter tone.

The day before the eve of the New Year Jayden raced down to the docks; his father and the golems following, having been informed that the King's ship had been spotted. He saw Maric and Cailan step off the ship and raced into Cailan's hug and clung to him heart pounding.
Cailan hugged him tightly. "How are you doing Jay?"
"I'm alright." Jayden wasn't sure how he truly felt; he was caught between delighted to see them and suspecting their visit meant they were almost out of time. "I'm glad you're here." He said softly; managing a smile as Maric ruffled his hair. He smiled as he saw Delilah and gave her a brief greeting before he was in Nathaniel's embrace trying not to clutch at him.
Maric gripped Loghain's arm and pulled his friend close. "The seas were treacherous; I feared we would be even more delayed than we have been."
"Well you are here now." He gripped Rendon's arm in greeting. "It is good that you are here. Come; Celia is eager to see you all."
Cailan stared at the golems. "Wow; they are amazing."
Jayden smiled and tugged him over to them. "This is Rumold and Tolband." He turned to the golems. "I'd like you to meet Prince Cailan and his father King Maric and this is Arl Howe and his son Nathaniel and his daughter Delilah."
Maric and Rendon both raised an eyebrow as the golems nodded in acknowledgement. Rendon couldn't help the thought that Jayden was becoming more and more valuable.
They headed up to the estate; Jayden's eyes widening in delight as he saw Eleanor, Bryce and Teagan talking to his mother, Alistair and the twins standing quietly to one side with Fergus and Oriana. Jayden raced over and hugged them all.
Alistair grinned; giving a subtle smile to his father and brother.
Loghain had been worried that things might be a little uncomfortable given the situation; but the families fell into easy chatting. Nathaniel, Anora and Cailan were teasing Fergus and Oriana about married life and Jayden was pulled into mischief with the twins and Alistair. They stayed up late into the night until finally the travel weary families were shown to their rooms.
Loghain watched Celia drink the last drop of the potion and sank onto the edge of the bed; his head falling into his hands.
Celia carefully placed the vial back into its box her hand trembling slightly before she moved to Loghain and pulled him to his feet. She rested her cheek against his chest as they embraced, moving in a slow dance before the fire. Celia cupped her husband's cheek and sought his lips in a desperate kiss; needing him as much as he needed her.

Alistair sneaked into Jayden's room when everyone had gone to sleep; wincing as Kolby jumped up the bed waking Jayden from his sleep so violently he fell out of the bed.
Wiping the sleep from his eyes Jayden looked up at Kolby who was peering down at him. "You're evil." He muttered; giving the mabari a none too gentle shove so he could get back on the bed, sighing as Kolby tried to lick his entire face by way of an apology. "Kolby enough already!" He yawned and glanced to Alistair. "What's happening?"
Alistair gave an excited smile. "I found the Hawkes."
Jayden's eyes widened now fully alert. "Where? How?"
"In Lothering."
"That's awesome Ali; but why didn't you tell me earlier?"
Alistair's cheeks turned crimson. "Well … um … Bethany sort of kissed me and well I … um … sort of kissed her back."
Jayden struggled not to laugh. "Sort of?"
"They were both really fast kisses and well …"
Grinning widely Jayden leaned a little closer. "So what was it like; kissing I mean, even if it was quick?"
"It was nice; really nice." Alistair gave a sigh and flopped onto his back on the bed. "She's amazing!" He held up his wrist with her scarf wrapped around that he re-tied each day. "She gave me this."
"Wow; she really likes you too. So will Bann Teagan let you visit?"
"I think so; though I didn't mention the kissing to him, only Carver knows and he didn't seem to mind."
Jayden sighed. "You're lucky then. I almost kissed Lyra, before we went to find the Dalish. Zef interrupted and I haven't had the courage to try again, every time we get close he gives me this look." He glanced to Alistair seeing the surprise on his face. "I guess I understand why I mean I'm not elven. Maybe I'm alright to have as a friend; but when it comes to his sister I guess I …" He sighed deeply. "I don't know."
"Has he said anything to you?"
"No; not a word."
"Jay I think maybe you've got this wrong. I think he's just worried about his sister rather than it being an issue with you. I mean you are a Teyrn's son and you must know the nobles will go crazy if you and Lyra get together."
Jayden flopped backwards onto the pillow and gazed at the ceiling. "I don't care Ali. I can't imagine my life without Lyra; it would be like the world without colour or sound." He flushed. "I guess I sound a bit silly."
Alistair flopped down beside him and shook his head earnestly. "That's how I feel about Bethany; I just wasn't sure how to explain it."
Jayden closed his eyes and sighed. "I thought I would be a lot older before I started liking girls; it makes things … complicated."
Alistair grinned. "Maybe; but it's a nice complicated."
Jayden rolled his eyes. "Yeh that's because you've got to the kissing part; I'm still at the bit where my stomach is in knots every time I see her and I'm terrified I'll look like an idiot." He glanced to Alistair who was barely restraining himself, both boys laughing until their stomachs ached.

The following day the sun shone bright and clear. The families headed out early to spend the day near the woods to the east, guards remaining at a discreet distance. The families settled beneath prepared canopies; braziers burning brightly, wrapped in thick cloaks, the younger children soon darted into the woods chasing each other and exploring.
Eleanor smiled as Celia gently tapped her arm and gestured for her to follow. They walked down to the beach, the breeze cold but refreshing. Eleanor glanced to her friend. "How long?"
"I have taken the last drop."
The colour drained from Eleanor's face. "Maker forgive me! We should have left sooner; perhaps travelled by sea rather than land. Celia I ..."
"Eleanor I am simply grateful we have this time; though I certainly did not intend you and your family to be here at the end. That somehow seems a little cruel. Perhaps it would be better if we arrange for rooms in local Inns for you from tonight."
Eleanor shook her head. "If you will allow it we will stay. I will not abandon you." She hurriedly wiped the tears from her eyes. "Do the children know?"
"No; though they are astute enough to know there cannot be much of the potion left. Eleanor you have been a dear friend, but I must ask you to do something for me."
"Anything."
"Anora will need support. I ask that you be there for her as you have been for me."
"Of course Celia; but perhaps there is still time for a cure …" She tailed off under Celia's understanding gaze hearing the desperation in her own voice.
"There is always hope Eleanor." She sighed softly. "Loghain will need you all; he blames himself, but more worryingly Jayden blames himself. Please be there for him too, he will need someone even if he won't admit it."
"My family will always be there for yours; whatever is needed."
Celia gently clasped her hand. "You have been a dear, dear friend."
The women forced themselves to chat about lighter subjects before being drawn back to the warmth of the braziers."

Delilah felt her father's gaze on her and with reluctance she moved over to Jayden. He was watching Ellowyn and Aedan who were balancing on a log facing off against each other with sticks as swords. Delilah hesitated and chuckled softly; finding herself a little envious of Ellowyn, she could swap the dress for a sword so easily and she sometimes wished she had Ellowyn's confidence with both.
"They are both going to fall off." Jayden stated with a warm smile.
Delilah focused on him; having to remind herself he had only just turned eleven. His eyes seemed more adult than child; he held his body with confidence and there was an air of power around him that he appeared unconscious of. She imagined him a little older having no doubt he would be handsome in his own way. She wondered if it would be so terrible to marry him; he had the status her father and grandmother coveted. He was kind and generous; but with a steel edge if provoked, he would be a man people would follow like his father. She imagined they would get on well enough and perhaps in time when he was more of an age there might develop an attraction. She inwardly sighed; what did it matter, her father wouldn't stop until she was Jayden's wife and while Ellowyn may escape marriage to Thomas, acceptance was her only course. Her eyebrow raised as she realised the young elven girl was watching her suspiciously and she suddenly realised what the looks meant that passed between the pair. She glanced to Jayden startled and wondered if his parents knew he favoured her. "You are playing with fire." She whispered.
"Excuse me?"
"Nobles will never accept elves as anything other than servants."
Jayden gave Delilah a piercing look that pinned her where she stood. "Elves are much more than servants and one day everyone will accept that whether they like it or not!"
"You think it is possible?"
"I do; but only if there are those of us that will make the change happen."
Delilah allowed a smile. "Then I hope you succeed."
Rendon was delighted to see Delilah and Jayden smile at each other; casting his daughter an approving glance as she returned to his side.
Delilah smiled to herself; Jayden had given her a way out. She settled next to her father carefully adjusting her skirt.
"You and Jayden appear to be getting on well."
She heard his hopeful tone and tried not to take pleasure in shattering his illusion; keeping her voice low she leaned towards him so they would not be overheard. "I am afraid father I believe Jayden's tastes lie elsewhere."
Rendon's gaze immediately returned to the boy seeing Ellowyn leaning towards him the pair giggling.
Delilah realised what her father must think; but did not move to clarify what she had meant. Perhaps if he thought she had meant Ellowyn he would end his foolish plans for herself and Thomas. She saw the frustration on his face; refusing to acknowledge the poisonous look he gave them both before it was masked, instead she allowed herself the belief that the matter would finally be over.

Aedan nudged his sister and nodded in Jayden's direction; all day he and Lyra had unconsciously gravitated towards each other, no matter what they were doing.
Ellowyn grinned. "I think they look sweet." She heard a sharply sucked in breath and turned to see Zef giving them a concerned look. Gripping Aedan's arm she pulled her brother over to the distressed boy. "We aren't going to say anything." She glanced behind them as she heard her mother calling to her. She grinned at Zef. "Promise." She darted off giving a meaningful glance to her brother.
Aedan glanced to Zef. "You don't approve?"
"Oh it's not that; Jay's awesome, it's just … well he's human and one day he will be Teyrn. There is no way the nobles will let him and Lyra be together if it got serious." He shook his head slightly. "Jay thinks he will change things; not because of Lyra, just because he thinks it's right, but I don't see how he can, not really."
"How is he going to change things?"
"He wants each Alienage to have its own Bann to give us a voice in the Landsmeet."
Aedan raised an eyebrow. "That's a pretty good idea. I bet my dad would support it; he tries to make elves as equal as the law will allow, but if elves were at the Landsmeet the laws would have to change."
Zef ran his fingers through his hair. "Yeh; but lots of nobility are against elves."
Aedan grinned. "Maybe; but right here are the three most powerful families in Ferelden and I bet we could persuade the rest."
Alistair raced up to them; Simon following close behind. "What are you two conspiring about?"
Aedan pulled his cloak tighter around him as a cold wind shifted through the trees. "Jay intends to make sure each Alienage has a Bann so the elves can have a voice in the Landsmeet."
Alistair smiled. "That would be awesome! He'll do it too. When Jay sets his mind to something there is no stopping him. It's a good job he's nice; or he'd be scary."
"Who'd be scary?" Jayden asked; grinning as the four boys jumped.
They were saved from answering as Ellowyn and Lyra raced passed with Rathnal on their heels; Lyra grabbed Jayden's hand and dragged him with her, their feet crunching loudly in the snow.
Aedan frowned moments later as he heard Ellowyn cry out in alarm. He darted after her following the tracks they had left; Alistair, Simon and Zef running after him. They stopped dead; eyes wide at the sight of the bear snarling, Jayden and Rathnal standing protectively in front of Lyra and Ellowyn. The bears huge head swivelled in their direction freezing them to the spot. "What's a bear doing out of it's winter sleep?" Aedan hissed.
"It's hurt." Alistair whispered. "Look at its back leg." Gashes streaked the leg and blood dripped into the snow.
"You've got a way with animals Jay calm it down." Zef whispered; whimpering as the bear shuffled a step in their direction before hesitating.
"Zef how do you expect me to calm an angry bear?" Jayden replied; his breath catching as the bear turned to him bearing its teeth.
Rathnal paled. "I think she's pregnant! This is not good at all."
Alistair's eyes widened as Kolby darted past them and planted himself in front of the bear growling, trying to force it back. "Kolby!" He cried out as the bear pawed at the mabari. The blow missed; but the bear was closer now, her face twisted as she growled. Alistair didn't realize he was running until he was between the bear and Kolby; the bear rearing up on her hind legs, his gaze fixed on the huge paws that he was pretty sure he was going to see up close. He bit his lip to stop himself crying out for his father and tried to move Kolby back with his legs, his heart pounding so fiercely he thought it would burst from his chest.
Aedan's heart lurched in his chest as he saw the bear towering over Alistair; racing forward before he could think about what he was doing, seeing Jayden running towards Alistair at the same time, the runestone he had shown them gleaming from within his tunic. Realising what he was going to do Aedan leapt forward shielding Alistair and Kolby as Jayden yelled for everyone to close their eyes and brought the rune from his pocket.
The bear stumbled backwards at the bright light; hitting into a tree, staggering and slumping to the ground disorientated.
Thrusting the rune back into his pocket Jayden opened his eyes and grabbed a healing potion from his belt. Heart pounding he pulled out the cork and splashed the liquid across her wound, wincing at her growl. "Sorry I know that will sting; but I'm not going anywhere near your mouth."
"Jay get away from her!" Ellowyn hissed.
"I'm just …" He turned sharply as two men burst into the clearing.
"Gotcha!" The tallest man grinned seeing the bear.
Jayden scowled. "Stay away from her she's pregnant!"
Simon's expression darkened. "They are poachers; my father ran them off our land just last week."
"You woke her didn't you?" Lyra snapped.
"Now that's a big accusation from such a little elf." Malik smirked; spitting on the ground. "This here ain't no-one's land. Well probably the Teyrn; but I don't think he will care about a bear who just happens to be wandering around. Probably see it as us doing him a favour." The men chuckled at each other; clearly delighted with themselves.
Jayden narrowed his eyes. "Doesn't matter because his son cares!"
Malik glanced to Joffery and burst out laughing. "You're a scrawny thing to be the great Teyrn Loghain's son. I've heard about that boy; killed a Queen spider with one thrust of his sword, shot the ear clean off a man. You expect me to believe that's you boy? Besides he's got golems and I don't see no golems."
Kolby growled and then barked loudly.
Jayden saw movement from the corner of his eyes and glanced back to the men. "Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there."
Malik kicked wildly as he was lifted off his feet glaring at Jayden. "Not bloody possible." He gasped.
Joffery gave a strangled squeal and slipped on the snow as he tried to avoid the golem; finding himself held up in their air.
Jayden grinned. "Never be what people expect; it's much more fun."
The children ignored the squealing and kicking men and turned; their gazes searching the trees for the bear who had wandered off in the commotion, all hoping she and her unborn cubs would survive.
"How can the golems be so quiet?" Ellowyn asked as they turned back to the squirming men.
"I got Sandal to give them enchantments of stealth." Jayden gave a mischievous grin. "Among other things." He turned as his father; Maric, Bryce, Teagan and Rendon appeared through the trees, wondering if the rune light or Kolby's barking had brought them.
"What in the Maker's world is going on here?" Loghain demanded. He was treated to a chorused explanation from the children.
Rendon glanced to Alistair and Kolby. "That mabari seems to be a magnet for animal trouble. First spiders and now bears."
Alistair's eyes widened. "It wasn't Kolby's fault; he was trying to protect us." He swallowed painfully. "My Lord." He added quickly seeing the Arl's scowl.
Kolby whined softly.
"Kolby is a fine mabari Rendon and very brave." Maric countered.
Kolby darted to Maric and jumped up at him trying to lick his face.
Chuckling Maric ruffled his fur. "Brave warrior."
Kolby sat down and gazed up at him adoringly, his tail thumping off the ground.
Alistair glanced to his father and flushed beneath his approving gaze, catching Teagan's smile.
Loghain glanced to the poachers and moved over to them scowling fiercely until the men stilled. "Rumold; Tolband perhaps you could take them to the cells."
The golems nodded slightly before striding in the direction of the town, the poachers shrieking in alarm.
Bryce chuckled softly. "Well after that excitement; let's eat."

Celia gazed at her son feeling so deeply connected to him she could almost feel the beat of his heart as her own. They had finished eating and had gone down to the water's edge; she had wanted a moment just the two of them.
"What is it mom?"
"I was just thinking how blessed I am to have such a noble, fierce son."
Jayden grinned and at her beckon moved over to her, carefully snuggling into her arms.
Celia gently stroked his hair smiling as she gently tugged a braid. Her voice was a whisper when she spoke "Jayden I was wrong."
"About what mom?"
"About who you love. When the time comes I want you to be with the woman you love and who loves you. Whoever she is you will find a way, I know you will."
"Really? But you said …"
"Jayden if there is anything these months have given me, it is a certain clarity. Life is not about settling and it isn't just about duty although that is important." She hugged him tighter. "Whoever you love you will find a way to be with her, never give up." Celia bent down and whispered in his ear. "Even if she's elven."
Jayden froze and glanced cautiously up at his mother.
Celia gave him a loving smile. "You will find a way if your heart demands it."
Jayden remained silent, but a slow smile began to light his face.

As the sun started to go down all but Celia and her family headed back to the estate. Wrapped in their blankets they sat down on the large cushioned high back sofa beneath the canopy, several small braziers had been added to ward off the chill of the night. At a slight distance stood the two golems maintaining a watchful presence. Snuggled together they gazed out across the waves.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky the pale blue was replaced by a deepening purple; thin ribbons of gold drifting through the darker strands, an elaborate embroidery stretched out across the heavens. The purple deepened, the gold fading as its last flickers danced across the waves as the sun finally sank beneath the horizon, before the stars finally took the stage, the moon's gleaming brightly in the winter's night.
The family talked; shared memories, laughed until they cried and laughed more. They remained awake throughout the night grasping onto their time together knowing how precious it was. The future was the only topic that remained untouched; the silent void that was skirted around. Aelfraud wove them tales of Celia and Loghain growing up and Loghain spoke of his own parents more freely than he ever had; focusing on those moments of joy that shone as jewels paving the past. Jayden grinned as his parents and grandfather spoke of Anora's mischievous nature as a child. Anora chuckled at some of her more ferocious moments; flushing as they retold the first time she had met Fergus, Nathaniel and eventually Cailan and how she had ordered them around, all three acquiescing to her demands without a word of complaint. She smiled as she told her brother how excited she had been for his arrival and how determined she was that she would have a brother. They spoke of Jayden's own childhood; his first steps, his first introduction to sand and his father falling into the sea as he raced to catch him. Jayden grinned as his grandfather spoke of the wolves and the wild horse they had seen and their many hunting trips; before reminding him of how excited he had been to see the Alienage for the first time and how he had returned home spending hours telling them of the Vhenadahl and his new friends.
The family finally fell silent as the sky began to lighten and they moved out of the canopy and walked down to the water's edge; watching the darkness chased by a flash of gold and then a shimmer of pink that spread swiftly as if in a game of chase.
Celia smiled; the first day of a New Year and she had seen its beginning. She could already feel the weakness beginning, able to tell it from the tiredness caused by being awake all night. She gently squeezed her husband's hand their eyes locking.
Loghain felt his heart plummet; his stomach churned painfully, but he smiled and wrapping his arm around her waist they began a slow walk back home, Jayden and Anora moving to support their grandfather.
Celia felt as though she was seeing Gwaren for the first time; the dawn rays rippling through the street and across rooftops, dazzling against the white of the snow that was still lying from the fall the previous morning. It was still bitterly cold and yet the sun was glorious and seemed more beautiful than ever. She glanced to her family and held tight to the joy they had shared. As they moved into the estate she felt sadness claim her heart and she gathered her children to her, knowing she would have to tell them that their borrowed time was at last at its end.
