Chapter Fifty – The Interview

Angelina hangs up after finishing her call and stares over at Savannah. She can't believe that she had actually gotten a call. She'd happened to see a job posting that she never imagined they would even look twice at after seeing where she lives in comparison to where they're located.

"Well, now what?" Savannah asks with a laugh.

"I have to figure out where it's located and find a hotel I guess."

Savannah rolls her eyes. "Like you really need to find a hotel. Call Jon."

"What? No. Why would I do that?" Of course she knows the answer. Why shouldn't she call him? It was actually her first thought was to get a hold of him. "You really think I should?"

"I think if you don't you're crazy."

Angelina grins. "I can't believe they called me. I'm nowhere near them."

"They apparently liked something they saw. Which obviously because you're amazing."

"You're crazy."

"Maybe so. But you love me anyways." Savannah looks at her phone. "And I need to go. Call Jon. And let me know how that goes."

Angelina sit down on her couch after Savannah leaves. She stares down at her phone which now has Jon's number selected. After another minute, she finally presses send. She isn't even sure why she's nervous about this call.

"Hey," Jon answers. "Hang on a second."

"Okay." Angelina frowns a little at the noise in the background. She's caught him at a bad time apparently. Why would she expect anything different?

"Okay, sorry."

"I caught you at a bad time."

"No, not at all. Just a loud room. So this is certainly a surprise call."

"Yeah, I guess you could say that." She chews on her bottom lip. "So I'll just get straight to the point. As you know I've been looking for another job. I sent in a resume last week that I honestly did on a whim. I never expected them to give it a second glance considering I'm in Ohio."

"Where's the job?"

"Vegas."

"Vegas? Really? And they called you?"

"Yes. They wanted to set up an interview."

"You set it up, right?"

"Yes, of course."

"Good. Where at?"

"It's a publishing company." She grabs her notebook to get the name of the company. She frowns when Jon chuckles. "What's so funny?"

"It's not far from my place. When's the interview?"

"A week from Thursday. So I was kind of hoping… wondering if I could stay at your place? I mean… or if you could get me a number for a nearby hotel."

"Nonsense. You'll stay at my place."

"Yeah? You don't mind?"

"Not at all. Are you going to come out on Thursday?"

"I was hoping I could possibly come out Tuesday or Wednesday. That way I could get myself acclimated."

"Yeah, absolutely. I won't be home until Wednesday or Thursday depending on how things go. But I can leave the extra key for you. So you can come out whenever you want. You gonna stay after the interview?"

"I can." She smiles a little. "You don't have any shows?"

"Not until Sunday."

"Okay."

Angelina climbs the stairs of Jon's building and rounds to his door. She sets her bags down before moving over to where Jon had told her the key would be. It doesn't take her long to get into the apartment and settled. As she sits down on the couch, she finds Jon's number to give him a call.

"Hello?" Jon answers.

"Hey," Angelina says.

"Hey there. I take it you made it?"

"I made it. Got here about fifteen minutes ago. Just wanted to get settled before I called."

"No problem. You ready for the interview?"

"I'm nervous, but I'm ready. Do you think it's stupid that I even agreed to this?"

"Not at all. You've been talking about a change."

"Right, but this is a big change." She sighs. "How'd you do it?"

"I didn't have anything keeping me in Cincinnati. You have your family. Don't compare what I did to what you want, Angie. You'll give yourself a headache trying to remember what you saw in me."

She grins at that. "I don't need to try to remember what I saw in you." She runs a hand through her hair and lets out a soft breath. "I wish you were here."

"Me too. But I'll be there tomorrow."

"What time will you get here?"

"My flight gets in at 4:15, so any time after five."

"Okay." She hears someone say something in the background and frowns a little. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah. We're waiting for our signing to get started. That was someone letting us know that they were opening the doors. Which means I should go."

Her frown deepens. "Probably a good idea."

"We'll talk in the morning before you go in for your interview. And then when I get home you can tell me all about it."

"Sounds good."

Jon walks into his apartment and closes the door behind him. He can hear Angelina moving around in the kitchen. After setting his bags to the side, he walks into the other room. "Hello," he says. He loves the sight of Angelina in his kitchen; not just in his kitchen, in his apartment.

Angelina turns around and smiles at him. "Hey," she says.

"Smells good in here."

"Figured I could make you dinner." She watches as Jon moves over to her. "How was your flight?"

"There was a baby that wouldn't stop crying. The mother kept apologizing and I know she was trying to keep her calm it was just frustrating." He shrugs as he hugs her. "But I've had worse flights."

She smiles as she returns the hug. "At least the mom was trying."

"Oh yeah. And I know it was frustrating for her too. You could just see it on her face." He moves and leans against the counter. "Are you making your lemon pepper chicken?"

"Yes." Her smiles widen as she glances over at him. "You always loved it."

"And I haven't had it since whenever the last time you made it for me. I tried making it once and it was nothing like yours. What else are you making?"

"Twice baked potatoes and mixed vegetables."

"You're spoiling me."

"Well, I wouldn't say that."

"I would." He watches her for a moment. "Do I have time to grab a quick shower?"

"If you go now and don't waste time."

"Yes, dear." He winks at her before walking out of the room.

It doesn't take him long to shower and get dressed. He walks into the kitchen just as Angelina is pulling a pan out of the oven. "Perfect timing," he says.

Angelina laughs softly. "As usual," she says looking over. "Can we each out on the balcony?"

"Of course." He grabs plates from the cabinet. "What do you want to drink?"

"Whatever you're getting is good for me."

He nods as he grabs the pop bottle from the fridge. "I'll bring this stuff out there."

They sit down at the table on the balcony once they get their plates. Angelina watches as Jon takes the first bite, smiling when he groans. "Good?" she asks.

Jon chuckles. "Like you really have to ask," he answers. "So tell me about the interview. How'd it go?"

"It went well. They seemed to be really impressed with everything on my resume." She smiles. "It was amazing. I have never been through an interview like that before. It honestly felt like I was just having a normal conversation."

Jon smiles as he watches her. He loves how excited she is while talking about everything. "So when will they have their decision?"

"Beginning of next week. They have a couple more interviews and then they'll make their decision."

"You gonna take it if they offer you the job?"

She chews on her bottom lip. "I um… I think so." She smiles. "Yeah, I think I would. What do you think?"

"I think you're beaming already and you don't know if you have the job yet. If you don't take the job you're crazy."

She laughs softly. "How did you find this place?"

"We were here for a show and I mentioned something about maybe moving out here to the waitress at a diner. Next thing I know she's handing me the number to the guy that owns a few rental properties."

"You had it easy then."

"I guess you could say that." He chuckles.

"I don't want to even think about any of that right now. Not until I know."

"Probably a good idea."

Jon dries his hands after he finishes washing the dishes. He looks over at Angelina and smiles as he leans against the counter. "Thank you for dinner," he says.

"You're welcome. Thank you for letting me stay here."

"No problem." He pulls a bottle of beer out of the fridge. "Want one?"

"Sure."

They head back out to the balcony. Jon sits down and watches as Angelina leans on the brick wall to look out over the city. "So if you don't get the job would you still look out here?"

Angelina turns and looks at Jon as she takes a sip of her beer. "Possibly." She shrugs. "It would have to be worth it financially."

"What if I told you that you wouldn't need to worry about that?" Did he really just ask that?

She frowns at him. "What? Jon…" She sucks in a deep breath when he stands up and steps in front of her.

"I know it sounds crazy, but you could move here."

"What are you saying?"

Jon sets his beer to the side and rests his hands on the brick wall on either side of Angelina. What is he doing? "I know you feel it, Angie. It's been there for a long time now. And…" And what? How is he supposed to continue? He licks his lips nervously. "Angie…" He leans down and kisses her.
