Chapter 49
Blueshadow stretched and kneaded the ground impatiently. It was just after dusk, three sunrises since the ShadowClan incident, and now it was the full moon. For the first time in five moons she was going, and she was excited.
She had finally shaken the echoes of Lilypool's death off, and was once again passing her clan-mates in skill. She had made a deal with Aspencry, Aspencry taught her all of SkyClan's tricks, and she taught Aspencry the secrets of the night.
She glanced up at Goldenmist, the golden she-cat was purring with Voleear. Blueshadow twitched her whiskers, Voleear had been the first of her kits to find love, though Splashspot was padding after Whitefoot. She looked up as Silverstar appeared with Leaftail, both looked flustered.
Blackwillow padded over to Leaftail and mewed something softly to him. Blueshadow was to far away to hear the murmured answer, but she saw Leaftail shoot Silverstar an angry look. Looks like I'm not the only one angry with Silverstar and her nonchalant manner.
Blueshadow stayed at the back of the patrol as Silverstar led them quickly through the forest. But it was easy for Blueshadow to keep up without even panting. She breathed in the sweet new-leaf air as she leaped gracefully over a large bramble bush and almost landed on Graycloud.
"Sorry," she mewed as Graycloud reared up in surprise.
"Never mind," Graycloud mewed friendly. Her blue eyes were hopeful as they looked at her.
Blueshadow shivered, she had never gotten her bond with Graycloud since her former apprentice had found out about her and Greyear. Not that she had even tried, she didn't care much about amending the harm that was done.
She was happy enough with her few close friends, now down to Aspencry and Lightfoot since Lilypool had died. But that was fine, she didn't have enough time for being friends with every cat in the clan. Though she knew that many of the young cats of the clan thought of her like a second mentor.
She jumped over the stream landing far past the bank. But Graycloud kept up pretty well, only giving a small burst of speed to catch up. "Blueshadow, I wanted to ask you what you would think if I told you about something I know but you don't," Graycloud rambled nervously.
"Stop babbling and get on with it!" Blueshadow snapped irritably.
Graycloud dipped her head in embarrassment, "what would you think if I got a mate?" the small grey she-cat mewed.
"I would say, good for you, most cats find a mate eventually, and if you are thinking about Crowpelt, I think he's a good cat," Blueshadow mewed calmly, glancing at Graycloud.
"Good, I wanted to know what you thought before I agreed to be his mate, he asked me yesterday, and I told him I would think about it," Graycloud mewed.
Blueshadow dipped her head, respecting Graycloud's seriousness about something she had done on emotion. Graycloud dipped her head and moved away to Crowpelt's side. Sweetspot and Blackwillow then replaced Graycloud.
"Blueshadow, Sweetspot wants to talk with us," Blackwillow mewed. Blueshadow knew this was about Rushclaw, the only time they both talked to her at once was when it was about the RiverClan warrior.
She dropped behind the patrol and turned to the two sisters, and waited for them to speak.
"Blueshadow, I-I'm expecting kits again," Sweetspot mewed. Blueshadow groaned, this would only bring more problems.
"I can't help it! And I am very happy! But I need your help," Sweetspot mewed. "I need you to spread the news and find a tom to pretend to be the father," Sweetspot mewed.
"What!" Blueshadow burst out, shocked by Sweetspot's request. "I can spread the news easily, but find a tom willing to pretend to be the father? That's going to be impossible! Most toms that could possibly be your mate already have mates," Blueshadow continued.
"Please! I was able to convince most cats last time that it was a cat who had died, but I won't be able to do that this time," Sweetspot mewed.
"Just don't say anything, you don't have to tell any cat the father if you don't want to," Blueshadow mewed irritably.
Blackwillow nodded in agreement, surprising Blueshadow. "Blueshadow is right, just don't tell any cat who the father is, they have no right to know anyway," Blackwillow mewed.
Sweetspot looked worried, but nodded, "fine, but could you get the news out gradually, so that not every cat knows at once?" Sweetspot mewed.
Blueshadow shrugged, "sure, anyway you want," Blueshadow mewed. Then she turned away, leaving the two sisters behind her as she sprinted silently after the patrol.
She reached the patrol just as they reached the hollow, and she slid into a place next to Lightfoot and Deerpaw. The sleek brown apprentice was bubbling with excitement and anticipation for her first gathering.
Blueshadow flicked her tail over the apprentice's shoulder, waiting for the apprentice to relax before flicking it off. Then Silverstar led them down into the clearing.
Blueshadow headed over to Bouncefoot who was with her kits, which had recently become warriors, Coldstare and Streaktail. "Bouncefoot, how have you been?" Blueshadow mewed politely.
"Blueshadow! Its good to see you again as well, I haven't seen you since the beginning of leaf-bare, where have you been?" Bouncefoot mewed, shoeing her kits away with her tail.
"Oh, I've been busy," Blueshadow mewed casually. "So what's the news in WindClan right now?" Blueshadow continued.
"Nothing much, just two new apprentices. Skyclaw's kits are over there," Bouncefoot mewed, pointing wither her tail at two small cats at the edge of the clearing. The tom was a light brown tabby tom with faint white paws and yellow eyes.
The she-cat was a silver tabby with striking black stripes and dark brown eyes that looked around the hollow in wonder.
Blueshadow nodded and turned back to Bouncefoot, "how did you get those scratches?" Bouncefoot asked, staring at the cuts from the ShadowClan scuffle.
"Oh, there was a little fight with ShadowClan a few days ago, nothing big," Blueshadow mewed breezily.
"Okay, I'll se you later," Bouncefoot mewed, heading off to a group of warriors. Blueshadow shrugged and turned to find a cat from RiverClan to learn of the news in that clan. After she had gone a few paces, she stopped as she felt a tail tip on her shoulder.
She turned to see Thornclaw, his dark yellow eyes were darker then normal from regret. "What do you want?" Blueshadow mewed coldly.
"Just meet me behind those ferns okay?" Thornclaw mewed. Blueshadow glared after the dark brown tom as he darted away toward the ferns at the edge of the clearing.
She was tempted to just ignore him, but she was curious to hear his excuse, for that was surely what he was going to do. She skirted a few groups of warriors, and halted as two new apprentices ran across her path.
She breathed in the scent of ShadowClan and glared at the apprentices as they broke into a mock battle and caught her leg with their claws. She hissed and jerked her leg away, licking the small scratch as blood seeped out of it.
The apprentices had broken apart and were looking up at her nervously. "This is a gathering, not your clan camp!" Blueshadow snapped angrily. The apprentices, littermates she guessed, looked down at the ground in embarrassment.
"Sorry about that Blueshadow," a cat mewed from behind her. She turned to see Mistcloud with Beewing padding up to her.
"These are ShadowClan's newest apprentices," Mistcloud continued. "My apprentice, Spottedpaw, and Beewing's apprentice, Flarepaw," Mistcloud mewed.
Blueshadow grunted in acknowledgement, Flarepaw was a fluffy red tom with pale green eyes. Spottedpaw was a pretty little thing, with a lithe, slender body and a gleaming calico pelt with a white chest and green eyes as bright as Redsky's.
"Well, make sure they behave better. In my opinion, apprentices shouldn't be allowed to go to gatherings until they prove themselves," Blueshadow muttered. Then she turned and stalked off toward the ferns.
She slid in behind the ferns and breathed in Thornclaw's heavy scent. She looked up and saw his yellow eyes gleaming. "I thought you weren't coming for a moment," Thornclaw grunted.
"I just got held up by your new apprentices, though I didn't really have a reason to come didn't I?" Blueshadow mewed back sharply, moving away from Thornclaw.
"Its such a nice night," Thornclaw purred, moving next to her and pressing his soft fur against her. She held her breath, not wanting to make it seem she had forgiven him, but she couldn't make herself move away.
"Why did you attack me?" she asked softly, forcing herself to move away and look deeply into his eyes.
"I-I'm sorry, I hadn't been thinking. But Mintleaf is my sister from a younger litter, and she's expecting Mallowclaw's kits, so I felt protective of her," Thornclaw apologized.
Blueshadow felt a rush of relief sweep over her. She felt herself forgive him instantly, reaching up to brush her muzzle along his face, "that's okay, I would have done the same for my clan-mate as well, though I would have let you escape," she purred softly.
Thornclaw purred back and pushed into her roughly. She stumbled and pushed back, jumping on Thornclaw when he stumbled, she purred and licked his face as he lay on his back on the soft grass.
When she was done, she stepped off of him, "I'm ready to meet you at night if you are," she purred.
"I'm ready! Do you want to meet tomorrow?" Thornclaw asked excitedly.
"Yes! I'll meet you by the bramble hollow where we kept Willow," Blueshadow mewed softly as she weaved around Thornclaw. Blueshadow closed her eyes in delight as Thornclaw softly licked her ear then jumped on her and started licking her and nuzzling her.
Blueshadow stiffened as a heavy coughing sounded close to them. Opening her eyes, she saw Foxtail's amber eyes and Sootclaw's blue eyes staring at them from the ferns.
"You're taking our spot," Foxtail mewed gruffly.
"Oh like you can say anything!" Blueshadow hissed back, as Thornclaw got off of her and she leaped to her paws with her tail lashing behind her.
"I wasn't going to say anything," Foxtail retorted. "But, you can't say anything to me now either," he shot back.
"She knew?" Sootclaw gasped, staring at Foxtail.
"I knew as well," Thornclaw put in, sounding nervous and defensive.
"How did you know?!" Foxtail gaped at Thornclaw. "Did you tell him?" Foxtail hissed, turning on her.
Blueshadow scrambled backward out of reach of Foxtail, shocked at how hostile he looked.
"Stop it!" Thornclaw spat, pushing his way between her and Foxtail. "you need to calm down before some cat hears us and we get in trouble!" Thornclaw continued. "And Blueshadow did not tell me, I knew before we even met," Thornclaw hissed.
"How?" Sootclaw mewed, trembling. Blueshadow glared at the black she-cat in disgust, why are you trembling like that? Stand up for yourself! Blueshadow pushed pass Thornclaw and stood nose to nose with Foxtail.
She looked up in Foxtail's amber eyes and saw rage, horror, shock, and panic flashing like fire. "Look, only Thornclaw knows, and he won't tell. As long as you and Sootclaw don't tell as well," Blueshadow mewed smoothly.
Foxtail seemed to relax, he stepped back and his fur fell flat on his shoulders. He turned to Sootclaw and whispered to the WindClan she-cat, who also relaxed. They turned to her and nodded, they had reached an agreement.
After Foxtail and Sootclaw left, Thornclaw turned to her, "so, what was the agreement?" he asked gruffly.
"Don't worry, all that was in that 'agreement' is that we don't tell about them, they don't tell about us. Its really quiet simple, and we weren't planning on telling on them anyway, so now our secret is safe, and we didn't have to do anything," Blueshadow purred.
Thornclaw looked at her admiringly, "that was pretty clever," he purred nuzzling her cheek.
She breathed in his scent and purred, "I know, but it wasn't that clever, it was quite logical," Blueshadow mewed softly.
Thornclaw licked her ear and purred back, "no cat can think logically when you're there."
"Why not?" she asked curiously.
"Why? I would think its obvious! Your dazzling green eyes draw all the light to them, your soft, sleek fur makes everything look fuzzy, and your mew, oh… its smoother then honey, clearer then water, warmer then the sun, and is more beautiful then the moon and night sky and everything else pretty and mysterious in the world," Thornclaw mewed softly.
Blueshadow purred, touched. She closed her eyes and leaned into Thornclaw, content to just be with him and let his soft words linger in the warm new-leaf air.
She started as a yowl sounded across the clearing, starting the gathering. She looked at Thornclaw, sorry to have to leave him so soon. "Tomorrow night seems to long to wait," Blueshadow mewed softly.
Thornclaw didn't answer, but his eyes said he felt the same, she nuzzled him once more, then backed out of the ferns.
Now that she was away from Thornclaw, everything seemed cold and hard. And she absently went to sit down next to Owlfoot on the edge of the ThunderClan group She looked around and saw Thornclaw staring at her, his dark yellow eyes glowed from the dark edge of the clearing.
She flinched as one of his clan-mates cuffed his ears and he turned his face toward the leaders, but his eyes still looked at her. She started purring, and Owlfoot clipped her ears and glared at her, "pay attention! You are a warrior!" he hissed.
She ducked her head in apology, but was confused when Owlfoot looked surprised. "What?" she whispered, shuffling closer to him.
"You've never given in that easily," he whispered back.
Blueshadow felt a flicker of annoyance, "well next time I won't be so nice, and I was only obeying you because we're at a gathering!" she hissed back quietly. Feeling hot and annoyed she turned her gaze to the leaders, Thornclaw never makes me feel like that, she thought irritably.
She ignored the senior warrior's apology and listened to the leaders, trying to stifle her anger. Whiskerstar was making his report about the new apprentices, Wavepaw and Runningpaw, and the elder Dustfur and senior warrior, Littlestorm, that had died from green-cough.
The Pinestar made a quick report of Applestem's kits that had become apprentices, not even mentioning the attempted grab for ThunderClan territory. If she try's to get a fight and makes a mistake, the least she could do is take responsibility! Blueshadow thought irritably.
Then Silverstar stepped forward at the same time as Troutstar, Blueshadow felt a flicker of anger as Silverstar dipped her head and stepped back, letting Troutstar go first. Troutstar didn't have any news to report other then Lakesky had moved to the nursery, expecting Paleclaw's kits.
Then it was Silverstar's turn, "We have three new warriors this moon, Harespring, Shadeleaf, and Goldenmist!" Silverstar yowled. Yowls of approval and happiness rang out, Blueshadow joined them, feeling the pride for her former apprentice that she hadn't been able to before.
"We also have three new apprentices, Patchpaw, Deerpaw, and Tumblepaw," Blueshadow purred as the apprentices stuck out their chests, pride swelling them up. Murmurs of appreciation rippled through the clearing.
Silverstar stepped back, and the gathering was over. What is wrong with her? Doesn't she want Pinestar to explain herself? Now Pinestar is going to think that she can push wherever she want without getting in trouble! Blueshadow thought angrily.
She turned and padded away, but stopped as Greyear and Streamtail approached her. Annoyance flashed through her at Streamtail's arrogant look. She didn't speak as they padded in front of her.
"Hello Blueshadow," Streamtail mewed scornfully. Blueshadow stiffened, if they hadn't been at a gathering, she knew Streamtail wouldn't have greeted her like that.
"Hello Streamtail, I haven't seen you in a while, what happened? Were you still down after that scar I gave you?" Blueshadow asked sweetly, remembering the fight last leaf-fall.
Streamtail hissed, but Greyear glared at his former apprentice and sent her off with a flick of his tail. "Sorry about that Blueshadow, Streamtail still needs to learn respect," he mewed as he glared after the silver she-cat.
Blueshadow eyed him warily, her muscles tense and her ears flicked nervously. It just felt wrong to be with him but not with him. "Your kits turned out to be fine warriors, you and Foxtail must be proud," Greyear mewed awkwardly.
Blueshadow dipped her head, "actually, my kits don't have a father, not anymore," she mewed, glaring at Foxtail who was chatting happily with a group of cats from all the clans.
She felt Greyear follow her gaze, "I'm sorry, if your love with Foxtail didn't work out," Greyear murmured.
Blueshadow shrugged, relaxing slightly, "what about you and Cloudyblossom? I heard you two aren't mates anymore either," Blueshadow mewed.
Greyear nodded, "Cloudyblossom, well, she had different reasons then I did for being my mate, but we both love our kits," Greyear added. Blueshadow shrugged, not meeting the Greyear's dark blue eyes. "Do you ever think about our past?" Greyear asked quietly.
"Yes, I think it is a shame we aren't in the same clan, but we never should have even tried," Blueshadow mewed calmly, finally meeting Greyear's eyes.
Greyear nodded, as if he agreed, "you're right, but we can still be friends, right?" Greyear asked hopefully.
Blueshadow took a step back, "no, we can't be friends, not beyond the usual gathering courtesy, it doesn't work that way, the end is the end, and it happened long ago," she mewed firmly. Then she turned and padded away to the ThunderClan patrol that was getting ready to return to camp.
She looked around and saw Thornclaw gazing at her, and happiness flowed through her. She padded lightly with the patrol out of the hollow, feeling the breeze ruffle her whiskers and her tail waved behind her, except for the tip, which just drooped.
She looked up at the sky as she padded into her territory. The moon was setting, and the next time it rose, she would be going to meet Thornclaw.
Okay, I decided to answer this at the end of the chapter. This is for Guest,Duck,Sonic, Honeyfern, Snowfalls, or in other words, for the reviewer who keeps swearing at me and my story.
I'm only going to answer you this once, I've been content to ignore you and your idiot comments but then you insulted God, the very thing I live for. So, I decided to educate you on some of my family's history, mainly, my Great, Great Grandmother.
My Great, great, grandmother is Heaven this moment, enjoying the Beatific Vision. I'm almost positive she is a Saint, at least a Blessed, for many reasons, but I'll stick to the two biggest reasons.
1. When she first had a baby, it was born dead, and she almost died herself. Then when she was going to have another baby, the doctors told her to have an abortion, or else it would be very likely that she and the child would die. she refused. Just before she had that baby, she had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who told her everything would be fine, and it was. that baby is my Great grandmother.
2. On December 7, 1941, my great, great, grandmother was saying the rosary alone in Church before morning Mass. She was sitting alone, but she heard someone whisper "have a mass said for Kenny" (Kenny is my great, great uncle) she looked around but saw no one, after she heard it four more times, she got up and told the Priest, and that morning mass was offered up for Kenny. That morning was the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Kenny died in it. If you would go see who died in that attack, you would find his name.
My great, great grandmother was a very special person, and I have read to many Saint stories to think that God could not exist, so don't even think you made me doubt my self at all, you are lying, or gravely mistaken. So Guest, this is the only time I will ever answer you, but I know you will continue swearing at me, so do me two favors.
I. be grammatically correct, and make sure your spelling is right, your insults lose their luster when I have to spend a few minutes trying to figure out what the heck you are saying.
II. And could you be clever! you keep saying, basically, the same things! and every time I read your review, I can fell my brain cells committing suicide one by one! (see? be more clever, like I just was)
Okay! now that I've done my duty as a Confirmed Catholic, for everyone, it was a shorter chapter then normal, but I haven't had a chapter on a gathering in a while. I'm going to start skipping ahead, and bending time, but its my story, so I can do that!
Oh, and I didn't win my bet with my sister *sigh* but as I had guessed, she boasted once that her story was better, then that was it. Anyway, thanks for all those who did fav to help me, and for all the "Guests" that gave their support!
remember to review!(why do I keep saying that? its quite obvious that I want you to review!)
