DISCLAIMER: I don't own ATLA

Katara was sitting next to the water fountain in she felt the shift in the air. Something changed, she just wasn't too sure what. Standing up, she went to find Zuko. She knew why she went to Zuko, she felt safe and knew that he could protect her against anything, he'd never let her get hurt. She'd head to Sokka next if she couldn't find Zuko. That was a tribe thing, she supposed, going to the closest man and saying she felt scared. Some of her earliest memories where her running up to her father or Torikya and saying there was something she was scared of. One time, there was a Fire Nation warrior under her bed. Hakoda had laughed, slightly worried, and went to look. Of course there was nothing, but he made a big show of putting one of the stuffed toys under there and made it stay there all night. The next morning, he pulled it out from under the bed and asked for a report.

"Uh-huh. Right. Yes. I'll tell her." Hakoda had looked at her with the toy in his hands.

"What did he say!"

"He told me to tell you that there is no longer anything under your bed. Nothing at all."

Katara never had problems with monsters under her bed after that.

She made her way through the palace, headed to Zuko's office where he'd been spending a lot of time working. Iroh was handing over a lot of responsibility to him, preparing him for when he was Fire Lord.

"It'll be a matter of days before he gives everything over and goes back to his silly tea shop!" Zuko had huffed at her. "I don't want to be Fire Lord! He's doing a good job on his own." Katara normally rolled her eyes and pointed out he'd have to take over at some point.

She knocked on his office door before opening it, finding him and Iroh sitting at a low desk looking over paper work. Zuko was pulling on his bottom lip, a scowl on his face while Iroh explained something.

"But that's so stupid!"Zuko growled, his scowl deepening. Katara watched him, smiling slightly.

"That is the way it is done, Zuko."

"But if we did it my way, then everything would be shared out between the healing houses!"

"When you are fire lord-"

"I'm changing the way it's done." Zuko told him, a small smile on his face while Iroh laughed. Katara laughed also, alerting them to her presence in the room.

"Princess Katara," Iroh bowed his head and she bowed back.

"Hello. I'm sorry to disturb you."

"Please, disturb us. This is so stupid." Zuko mumbled and Iroh glared.

"How is it stupid?" Katara asked, moving forward and sitting next to Zuko.

"OK, so if we employed five more healers, there would be an even amount of healers in each building." Zuko told her.

"But, with employing five more healers, the pay would have to go down." Iroh pointed out.

"So why don't we just give them more funding?" Zuko demanded. "I'd rather be funding the healing houses than the stupid rich-people clubs!"

"Zuko, those clubs fund the schools and the healing houses." Iroh told him. Katara stayed quiet, thinking carefully.

"Are we under staffed in the healing houses?"

"No-"

"Technically no." Zuko interrupted. "The wards are rushed off their feet, they don't have enough beds for everyone in the poorer areas."
"OK, so why not focus there? The private clinics, I happen to know, are fine as they are." Katara looked between them. "I can go down to the poorer healing house and work with them to try and improve them. I'll let you know if more staff will help."

"I don't want you going down there alone." Zuko told her. "There are bad people down there." Katara gave him a bored look.

"He is right, Princess Katara," Iroh nodded. "There are dangers down there."

"I'll be fine, and I'll take Sokka with me or something. Or Aang. YangChen might be a good healer. Also, I'm thinking it might be good for Azula to do something."

"You're going to let Azula try and heal people?" Zuko asked, raising his eyebrow.

"Yes." Katara shrugged. "I'll be with her, and I think it'll do her some good. And I will make sure there is someone with us at all times." Katara looked to Zuko, who frowned before letting out a long sigh.

"If I say no, you're just going to do it anyway, aren't you?"

"Yes."

"Fine, go risk your life to save others." Zuko watched her laugh.
"It wouldn't be the first time, would it? I have to get going."
"Why?"

"Toph will be freaking out again by now." Katara sighed and stood up. Zuko looked to his uncle, who nodded slightly.

"I'll come with you. Might as well give Stone-head some help." Zuko took her hand as they left Iroh alone with the new plans for the healing houses.

"I hope you realise I don't like the idea of you going down to the healing houses." Zuko told her quietly as they walked towards Sokka and Toph's room.

"I know," Katara sighed. "And if you really don't want me going then I won't, but I have to try." Katara told him and he nodded. She leaned her head against his shoulder and smiled.

"I can't wait till Toph's baby turns up." she smiled. Zuko snorted.

"I can't wait to see that. Sokka's gonna panic."

"You're meant to be supportive." Katara looked up at him and smiled.

"Meh." Zuko grinned as she laughed. They stopped just outside of the room, hearing pacing inside. Katara shrugged and knocked, entering when Toph called for her to come in. The scene in front of her surprised her. Sokka was pacing while Toph sat one the bed, ankles crossed and leaning back on her hands.

"Hey Sweetness." She smiled.

"Katara," Sokka took her by her shoulders. "Something is wrong with Toph."

"What's happened?" Katara asked.

"She hasn't thrown up yet."

"I keep telling him it's fine." Toph huffed as Zuko sat on the bed with her. "Hey Sparkles. How are you?"

"Fine. You?"

"Brilliant!" Toph grinned.

"Sokka, Toph is right. Not throwing up is a good thing." Katara told him before looking to Toph. "Any weird feelings?"

"Nope." Toph shook her head. "And no bleeding either. Azula said she'd been reading about pregnancy and stuff to make sure nothing went wrong. Which terrifies me, but I'll listen to her for now."

"You should." Katara nodded. "We've been talking and she says that she likes learning."

"OK." Toph leaned back on the pillows and closed her eyes.

"You OK, Stone-head?" Zuko asked.

"Yeah, just tired-"

"Every one out!" Sokka practically grabbed both of them and threw them out of the door. They heard Toph yelling at him through the closed door, but decided it was probably better to just leave them to it.

"Who'd have thought it would be Sokka freaking out so much?" Zuko laughed, linking his fingers through Katara's. Any maids or staff that saw them looked respectfully away from the young couple.

"I don't know, it seems about right. Sokka panicking over every little thing." Katara smiled softly before looking at him. "I think you'll be the same."

"I will not. I'll hide it better." Zuko grinned and nudged her shoulder with his. "Come with me?" Katara nodded, letting him lead her out of the building towards the TurtleDuck pond.

"Where did the Turtleducks come from?" Katara asked as she watched them.

"My father brought them in as a present for my mother before.." Zuko trailed off, not wanting to finish. Katara nodded in understanding, drawing shapes in the water.

"Katara… I have something for you." Zuko knelt next to her and smiled as she turned to face him.

"Ooh, I like presents. What is it?"

"You have to close your eyes." Zuko smiled, but on the inside it felt like dragons were ripping up his stomach.

Katara frowned at him slightly, but closed her eyes. She trusted him, he wouldn't do anything stupid.

Zuko took her hands and placed the necklace in them, waiting for her reaction.

"You can open your eyes."

Katara looked down and gasped. It was beautiful. On a dark red ribbon sat a pendant that had a field of fire lilies in graved with blue gem stones. Her hand reached up to her mother's own necklace, tears filling her eyes.

"Zuko… it's...i…"
"The ribbon is longer than normal, I know. Your father pointed that out, but it means you can still wear your mother's necklace along with this one. Only if you want that is…"

"Is this.. you asking..?"

"Yes. It is." Zuko blushed slightly. Katara wiped away her tears and smiled.

"Help me put it on?"
