Summary: A winter storm hits Haven, trapping Nathan and Audrey inside.
Snowed in.
"It's your turn to get up and make the coffee."
At Nathan's words, Audrey burrowed down deeper into the blankets, and closer to the inferno that was Nathan's skin. "Are you sure? Maybe it's really your turn."
Nathan reached around to pull Audrey close and kissed her forehead. "Nope, sorry, I definitely did it yesterday. Today is all you."
Audrey sighed and pulled back a bit so she could look Nathan in the eye. "Are you sure we have to go in today? We could just stay here and then we wouldn't need coffee right now."
As tempting as it was to stay in bed with Audrey all day, they couldn't blow off work. He looked at her and let out a sigh, pretending to be irritated with her. "No."
"Fine." Audrey pouted, and rolled over top of Nathan to drop out on his side of the bed. Maybe the skin on skin contact would make him think differently about his answer. He just grinned at her as she rolled over him, fully knowing what she was doing, and let her climb out from under the warm covers.
"Oh my god!" Audrey jumped about a foot in the air when her bare feet hit the cold floor of her apartment, and she scurried over to her chair to grab her robe.
"What's wrong?"
"It's freezing in here, Nathan! I think the power is out."
"What?"
Audrey shoved her feet in her slippers, which were hiding under her bed, and padded over to the thermostat. She tapped on it a few times, and nothing. When she glanced over at her alarm clock, she noticed that it was completely off. As she moved towards the window, she could hear the rustle of sheets as Nathan emerged from the bed, and she was completely jealous of his inability to feel the cold air. When she pulled back the curtain from her door, she took in a sharp intake of air. "Uh, Nathan? I don't think we'll be going in today."
"Why?"
Audrey turned away from the window to watch Nathan as he walked towards her. "Look!"
Nathan walked up behind Audrey, and reached around her to pull the curtain even further back, and could instantly see what she was talking about. Out on her balcony, there was at least 4 feet of snow, and it was still falling. There was no way they would be getting out any time soon. He looked away from the window, down to the tiny woman in front of him. "Please tell me you have food."
"I cannot believe you're asking me that."
"Well? Do you?"
Audrey looked up at Nathan and narrowed her eyes. It was a legitimate question considering her preference to always eat downstairs, but, still… "Yes, I do, Mr. Skeptical. I don't only consist on coffee and cupcakes like you seem to believe."
When Nathan gave her a, "I don't believe you" face, Audrey swatted him on the arm. "You should call into the station to let them know we're trapped."
Nathan turned and moved towards his phone. "What are you going to do?" When he heard the distinctive sound of a body hitting a bed, he sighed. He should have known.
"I'm just going to thaw out under these covers for a while."
When Nathan looked over, Audrey was already buried under the covers, and was holding them up to her nose. He could tell she was grinning by the twinkle in her eye. He could only shake his head, and had to turn away so she wouldn't see his smirk.
"I can't believe this is actually real weather, and not someone's Trouble. I feel like there's way too much snow for this to be natural."
Nathan shrugged as he threw another log on the fire. "It happens sometimes around here. Usually not this much at one time, but it's been known to happen. My mom used to say a winter like this meant good luck in the summer. I'm not sure if it was true, or if she just made it up to make herself feel better. She never did like the cold."
Audrey watched Nathan from her spot on the couch. He never talked about his mother, so comments like this were extremely rare. He stayed squatting next to the fire, stoking it, and she knew he was lost in a memory. Not wanting to break the spell, but wanting to know more, Audrey spoke quietly. "You never talk much about your mom. That sounds like a good memory." She watched as Nathan's shoulders rose and fell with a large sigh.
"I don't have a lot of memories of her. The older I get, the less I remember. But every once in a while, something will trigger a memory."
Even though she knew he couldn't see it, Audrey nodded. When he remained quiet, she lobbed another question at him. "Do you miss her?" She watched as once again his shoulder rose and fell with a sigh. But this time, he stood up and turned towards her. He moved towards the couch and settled in beside her, under the blanket she opened for him. He didn't need the warmth, but he needed her touch.
Nathan pulled Audrey close, and considered his response before speaking. With anyone else, he would tell them he absolutely missed his mother, but with Audrey, he knew he could be completely honest, and never worry about her judging his response. "Yes and no. She's been gone so long, I'm just used to life without her. I've spent more time on this earth without her than with, so sometimes it's just natural to not think about her. But at the same time, there are some things that happen in my life, where I really wish she was there."
"Like what?"
Nathan pulled away and looked down at Audrey. "Meeting you, for one."
Audrey furrowed her brow, and looked skeptically at Nathan. "Meeting me? Why?"
"Because you're important to me."
Audrey could feel her heart flutter. "You're important to me too."
Nathan leaned down to drop a light kiss on her lips and then pulled her back into him, letting her rest her head on his chest, while he stroked her hair. "She would have liked you."
Audrey sighed as she watched the fire dance in the fireplace in front of her. "I would have liked her too."
For a day that started out so bleak, it had sure become enlightening.
