Chapter Fifty One

I am staring off the porch later that night. My playmates are doing their homework, Carolyn and Martha are busy for the moment, Captain is away somewhere, and I have time to think again.

I do not understand why things are so complicated for these two when it doesn't have to be. Captain is not by any means normal. And I am not being mean when I say that, just truthful. But despite that he loves Carolyn and her family, including me. And I believe in her heart she loves him too. But I think he made several mistakes tonight, and after practically forcing her to hear his poem I do not understand why he said he didn't write it for her. I think it will only make her mad.

I sigh and lie down on the porch, watching the sun as it sets.

I am a good dog, an exceptional dog, and a wonderful terrier. Captain is a good ghost, and was an exceptional man, I think. Why does he make this so difficult? And why must a terrier such as me, intelligent though I may be, have to take on the role of matchmaker for these wayward humans? Or in the Captain's case, mostly human?

Nothing for it though. They have made some progress, though at times it is hard to tell that. I will keep an eye on them and do my best to guide them. Hopefully I can help them find their way through this and to each other. I really do want to see them both happy because they are my family too, and I honestly can't imagine Carolyn with anyone else. I will also have to make sure the Captain introduces himself to Candy and Martha! It was well past time he did so!

There will be more to sort out with these two as time goes on, but for now I don't care. The slight breeze ruffles my fur and I am content. Despite anything else that might be happening here, I love my family and they love me, all is right with the world.

I decide I have done enough thinking for one day and close my eyes to rest.

Author's Notes:

First of all if you have made it all the way through to the end, thank you for sticking with me! You are awesome. Please help me out and send reviews – tell me what you think of this story.

Do you like Scruffy? Do you not like Scruffy? Too much Scruffy? Per my note on the first page my plan is to do two more of these but if there is not enough interest I will move on to other things (I always have something to write). So please let me know if you want more or if you've had enough. Reviews are encouraged and appreciated.

It was harder to write this than I thought it would be, probably because I am used to story arcs in a series and I was surprised when I realized that GAMM didn't have an overall story arc. So putting a story arc, even a small one into the episodes which are not truly connected was much more difficult than I anticipated.

And I'm not at all sure what it says about me that I feel that I can think like a terrier, maybe I spend too much time around my dogs ?(again I place the blame squarely on the Wizard of Oz and Toto!)? lol In any event, thank you for reading…
