Philip II of Macedon: Grizzled Macedonian whose powerful empire was past down to his son Alexander the Great...
Vs.
Edward III of England: The man who declared war on France and captured much of France for his son, 'the Black Prince'
"Both of these kings lead the greatest armies and their sons played a huge role in history. Were going to examine Philip's Counter-Oblique Order at Chaeronea against Edward's Arrow Rain at Crécy." Mack said.
"For me the most important ex-factor is endurance Philip has his age butt trained heavily whereas Edward is a giant, for now lets take a look at their stats." Dr. Dorian said.
Philip:
Circa: 338 BC
Age: 44
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 160 Pounds
Weapons, Armor & Tactics:
Kopis
Sarissa
Javelin
Phrygian Helmet
Linothorax
Bronze Shield
Counter-Oblique Order
Edward:
Circa: 1346
Age: 34
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 175 Pounds
Weapons, Armor & Tactics:
English Arming Sword
Bill
English Longbow
Steel Helmet
Chainmail
Buckler
Arrow Rain
Close Range:
English Arming Sword v. Kopis
Since we've seen similar weapons to the Arming Sword our team of experts reviewed the tests. "The Kopis has it, it can slash, it can stab and Philip and his men trained with it extensively, edge: kopis." Geoff said.
"I disagree the Arming Sword can work around the armor of Philip and its much longer, edge: Arming sword." Dorian said.
"I can't say which is better butt from a soldiers perspective anyone who trains heavily with their weapons gets the edge." Mack said.
EDGE: Kopis
Coming up a revolutionary polearm takes on a 12 foot long infantry spear. Next the tactics these kings used in battle are examined. Later a precise and deadly bow goes head-to-head with a deadly dive-bomber.
Mid-Range:
English Bill v. Sarissa
"This right here is the Bill a weapon that war revolutionary in its time, at 6 feet in length and weighing in at about 8 pounds the reason it was so revolutionary was the fact you could break apart Pike squares or in Philip's case Phalanx." the Edward expert explained.
To test the Bill our Deadliest Warrior team set up a small 'Phalanx' consisting of five foam torsos and one armored target wearing Philip's Linothorax and helmet. The Edward and four other medieval weapon experts are given 10 seconds to break the artificial pikes then engage the actual targets. Once Geoff gave the count down the experts swung their Bills striking the pikes and breaking them in half. The experts proceeded their attack and simultaneously swung their weapons chopping into every target. The Edward expert advanced onto the armored target swinging his Bill and striking the Linothorax. He brought the polearm back behind his head let it fly onto the Phrygian helmet nearly crushing it. Doctor D moved in and tallied the damage counting; 5 instant kills and 1 delayed kill.
After reviewing the tests of the Sarissa our experts found a unanimous edge. "The bill takes this by a longshot, it is designed to counter pikeman and cavalry and proved more versatile in the tests." Dr. Dorian said.
EDGE: English Bill
Tactics:
Counter-Oblique Order v. Arrow Rain
Mack looked at the Philip expert and asked him what his most famous battle was?
"Philip's army was smaller then most, but under his command it was one of the most dangerous he was taught Theban warfare by the famed Theban general Epaminondas and used those tactics against them at Chaeronea." the Philip expert stated.
"Philip moved his armies to the South towards Chaeronea were he faced off against the combined forces of Athens and Thebes along with 300 Theban Sacred Band spearman. Philip's main advantage over his enemies was his son Alexander who leads his cavalryman. Philip sends his army forward marching towards the Athenian and Theban lines as his cavalry bunches up on his right flanks backed with two Macedonian infantry The Macedonian cavalry under Alexander backed with the infantry bested the Thebans and soon routed the Athenians. Ending the battle in favor of Macedon and lead the complete downfall of the Sacred Band of Thebes."
Then Mack looked at the Edward expert and asked him why Crécy was so monumental.
"Edward's primary advantage during the Hundred Years' War where his Longbowman which he used to weaken his enemies before sending in his remaining infantry and cavalry to pick off any stragglers with no better example of his longbowman then Crécy." the Edward expert stated.
"The major engagement in this battle were the English archers which Edward sent forward to counter the crossbowman of the French. The French crossbowman were overwhelmed as were the French infantryman. With his enemies broken apart without the use of Crossbowman Edward sent in his infantry and his cavalry. And ultimately destroyed French. With this victory Edward claimed much of France and his son the Black Prince also gained a fame that catapulted himself into the history books."
"What Edward did at Crécy was monumental he used his archers to weaken his opponents with that being said what Philip did at Chaeronea focusing all his might against the Theban Sacred Band and breaking their spirit changed the course of history in away Crécy cannot be compared to." Mack said.
EDGE: Counter-Oblique Order
Long Range:
English Longbow v. Javelin
"The Longbow was the primary weapon of the English during the 100 Years' War because of its versatility, preciseness and deadliness that was approximately 6 foot long and was so dominating it almost won the war for England." the Edward expert said.
To test the bow the Edward expert is given one small barbed arrow and one short bodkin arrow against an armored Ballistics Gell Torso wearing Philip's linothorax. Once Geoff gave the go ahead the expert nocked his first arrow and fired piercing the armor. He nocked his bodkin arrow and fired striking the bronze plate nearest the heart. "Okay your first arrow pierced the armor not an instant kill but what will kill him is pulling it out the second arrow hit nearest the heart which is a mortal wound." Dorian said.
After reviewing the tests of the Javelin our experts saw yet another unanimous lead to Edward. "The longbow may not kill Philip but it offers greater range, more accuracy with a wide variety of arrows, edge: English longbow." Mack said.
EDGE: English Longbow
Armor:
Phrygian Helmet, Linothorax & Bronze Shield v. Steel Helmet, Chainmail & Buckler
"We've seen this scenario play out time and time again both sets of armor have their advantages and disadvantages, there for we are forced to call it dead even once again." Mack said.

Ex-Factor Evaluations:
"Starting off with physicality Philip and his Macedonian's trained heavily compared to Edward so we had to rate Philip at a 87 and Edward at a 84. Next is audacity and this was not much of a debate because Edward was more audacious then Philip was he declared war on France for his one son Philip scored really low with 64 compared to Edward's 93. For generalship both were essentially fighting only for themselves and sons so they both got a 90. Next is Troop Training and although Philip and his men trained so heavily 89 Edward's troops trained extensively in a wide variety of weapons Philip at a 89 to Edward's 92. Our last factor is determination and this was a close debate but Philip was rated at a 97 to Edward's 90 do to the fact that he spent so long learning Theban warfare and it alongside his own personal tactics." Rob explained.
"Okay Robert we've got the weapons and ex-factors plugged into the simulation. All that is left is to run the battle and see which 'warrior-king' comes on top." Geoff said.

Daly clicks the switch and the battle opens up to the barren grassy fields of Northern Greece where Philip II of Macedon watches over four of his Greek soldiers (2 on foot soldiers and 2 cavalryman) as they trained. Unbeknownst to him Edward III peered over a small hill in hopes of conquering more land for his son. Philip continued his charge towards Edward whom swung his Bill striking Philip's horse in the head. Sending the horse crashing down on the ground breaking Philip's arm in the process. Edward rushed in for the kill but Philip regained his consciousness as Edward swung bill, before he could swing his polearm Philip brought his Kopis down onto Edward's shoulder knocking the bill from his grip. Philip advanced and pushed Edward to the side as he swung his sword Edward jumped backwards nearly dodging the blow. Still raging in pain Edward collapsed to his knees as Philip retracted his kopis. With his foe incapacitated Philip rushed in for the final blow but Edward brought his arming sword up and the two kings began to cross blades with neither gaining the advantage. As Philip brought his sword behind his head Edward rolled underneath the swing and shot his arming sword into Philip left bicep forcing him to his knees. Philip turned around chopping into Edward's chainmail glancing off his armor shocked Philip looked up as Edward brought his sword down onto his helmet cracking Philip's skull. ø

"The tests results and ex-factors seemed so close but this battle would completely play in Edward's favor his longbowman were able to take out the Greeks before they could even get close and his Bill was made to counter pikeman so Philip's Phalanx was worthless what made this such a close fight was Philip's more protective armor which made it difficult for Edward to get through." Rob explained.
Next week: Its a battle between 2 British generals who changed the course of history & modern warfare.
