Unconditional
Haruka paced the waiting room in the hospital like an animal that is anxious to find something to eat. Makoto had told Haruka to sit down a million times before and every time the olive-haired male uttered a word, Haruka shot him a dirty and angry glance. Haruka believed that with all of his pacing, everything would be okay. The raven-haired male didn't want to be angry at Makoto and the loving gaze he received gave him to courage to keep pacing. The nurses had taken Rin along to tend to his wounds and whenever Haruka glanced at his knuckles, he could see faint smears across his pale skin. It was Rin's blood mingled with his own because he scraped the skin of his knuckles by beating up the redhead. Haruka grumbled when he thought of the redhead because no amount of pain would ever be enough, Rin didn't even deserve to live anymore. What if Rose died and Rin stayed alive? Would that be fair? Haruka turned around when he saw the doors open and his blood started to boil when he saw that it was Rin. Haruka took a step in the redhead's direction but he was stopped by strong hands and he let Makoto pull him into a warm hug. Haruka had not shed a single tear since he heard the news and he wasn't planning on doing so unless…
Makoto managed to get Haruka to sit down and the olive-haired male pulled Haruka in his lap. The raven-haired male nervously bit the inside of his cheeks as he kept his strong and hopeful gaze on the doors.
"She'll be fine," Makoto assured and Haruka simply nodded. The raven-haired male was glad that he had Makoto with him because he wouldn't be able to survive this on his own. It would simply be too difficult to deal with the pain.
"I love you," Haruka whispered as he turned around to face his boyfriend. Makoto's eyes glistened and Haruka smiled a very small smile. Makoto held Haruka close and the olive-haired male placed a soft kiss on Haruka's neck. The raven-haired male rested his head against Makoto's shoulders as they both waited for news.
Rin didn't dare to glance at the two boys that were a few metres away from him. It was hard realising that they loved each other and that Haruka would never love him. He had gotten over it the moment he met Rose but his own stupidity had brought him to this point. He didn't care that Haruka had beaten him up because he would've done the same if he could. His head was pounding and the bruised nose constantly flashed waves of pain through his face. Rin felt like he had been run over by a train and in a sense, maybe he was. The physical part hurt but it was easy to deal with, the emotional pain however was a hurting on a whole different level. What if he truly killed the blonde? Would he ever be able to live that down? Rin shuddered when he remembered the last thing she said to him. Did she really wanted to be free from her life? The redhead felt warm tears pool in his dull crimson eyes and he wiped the first tear away that trickled down his warm cheek.
"Are you okay?" Rin was surprised to hear the warm and soothing voice. The redhead looked up while biting his lip to stop himself from crying. He had never expected that he would ever talk to him again, not after all the things he'd done in the past. Rin wasn't able to speak so he simply gave a small nod and Makoto's emerald gems shot Rin a soft gaze. Makoto held out his hand towards the redhead and Rin could only furrow his brows at the gesture. Makoto had never done such a thing for him and he remembered that he only reached out for Haruka. It had always been that way and Rin was questioned as to why Makoto was reaching out to him right now. With a shaky motion, Rin grabbed the hand that was offered to him and Makoto pulled him up. Before Rin could realise what happened, he was being held by the olive-haired male and Rin suddenly felt very small and vulnerable. He hadn't experienced such warmth in a long time and it was very welcome. Rin sobbed quietly against Makoto's chest and he listened to the soothing noises that stemmed from the boy that held him close.
"I know it'll be hard to ever be friends again, but now is not the time to fight," Makoto whispered softly and Rin had never been more glad to be close to someone.
"Thank you," he sobbed against the strong and broad chest. All too soon, Makoto had to release Rin because he had promised Haruka not to be too close for too long. Makoto had already upset Haruka by caring for Rin but Haruka couldn't be truly upset. It was Makoto's nature to care for people, no matter what they did. Makoto walked back towards his boyfriend and he held Haruka close once more. Haruka shot a dirty glance at Rin but the redhead didn't seem to notice.
Haruka had only closed his eyes for a few seconds but it was when he dozed off that the doctor appeared in the waiting room. Haruka's eyes flew open and he slipped off Makoto's lap, only to have a meeting with the floor because his legs didn't move as fast as he anticipated. Makoto helped the raven-haired male back up and they ran towards the doctor. It must be really frightening for the man because three teenagers were running at an incredible pace towards him.
"How is she?" Haruka was the first to ask even before the doctor was able to say anything. Haruka tried to ignore the worrying look on the doctors face and he waited impatiently for his answer.
"She's fine but…" the doctor was cut off by Haruka's next question.
"Where is she?" He asked while almost nudging the doctor to speak faster and to provide him with the next answer.
"Well, down the hall to the right, last room," the doctor was caught off guard and what happened next was a total surprise to anyone.
Haruka grabbed the hand that he thought he would never hold ever again. He dragged Rin behind him and he left a flustered Makoto and an angry doctor behind. Haruka ran past the rooms and they all seemed like a giant blur, he was only focused on the last room to the right. He ignored all the shouts of the passing nurses because they didn't matter. Rin followed Haruka's pace easily and before they knew it, they stopped in front of the giant glass window. Haruka pressed the hand that still held Rin's against the cold glass. Rose was hooked up on countless machines and Haruka could hear the sobs coming from the redhead. Haruka would never hug Rin and he was even surprised that he was able to hold his hand. Their clutched hand was pressed strongly against the window.
"Someday, I'm going to ban you from this hospital," the doctor huffed as he and Makoto joined the other two boys. Rin had tried to stay strong but his cheeks were wet from his shed tears.
"Sorry," Haruka muttered as he looked at the doctor with an apologetic look. However, Haruka felt like the doctor should know how much he truly cared about the girl that was locked up behind glass.
"I suppose I'm not allowed to go to her?" Haruka asked softly as he gazed at the blonde once more. The doctor had explained that they would keep her in a coma for a few days. She had suffered from blood poisoning and she had lingered between life and death for a few minutes. Haruka remained as strong as possible while he listened to the explanation. The raven-haired male had tried to ask the doctor what kind of illness Rose had but he wouldn't answer. Haruka was determined to ask her mother when she arrived and according to the doctor's, she was on her way.
"Well, I'll only allow one of you to enter and only for a few brief moments," the doctor said softly and the three boys gazed at each other. They didn't need words to establish that it would be Haruka that was allowed entrance to the room. Haruka hugged Makoto tightly and they shared a soft and short kiss before Haruka was taken away by the doctor. The raven-haired male needed to wear a special gown and a mask to prevent bacteria from entering Rose.
Haruka took a few steps into the room and he felt a certain hesitation creep up his body. What if he made her sick? Haruka took a step back and then he glanced at Makoto and Rin. They were both looking at him with an encouraging look and Haruka nodded. He slowly walked towards the bed and he tried to remember the soft voice that belonged to his precious friend. He closed his eyes and tried to envision that she was calling him with her gentle tone of voice.
I can feel you close to me…
Haruka stood next to the bed and he grabbed Rose's cold hand. It was hard to see her like this but he was sure that she would be fine. She simply had to be fine because Haruka still wanted her to teach him how to play the piano and they were even going to write a song for Makoto.
"I'm so sorry for putting you through this," Haruka whispered and a single tear rolled down his cheek. It fell on Rose's hand and he wiped it away with his thumb.
I am here and remember, that it doesn't matter whether it's far or near… I'm by your side, just for a little while…
A/N: So sorry it took so long to update! I had to grade so many tasks/tests that I'm still seeing the number run around in my mind! :p Also, I had to break up my first fight between pupils and guess what… of course I just had to be hit in the process as well. I only have a small bruise just under my right eye so I'm doing rather okay :) Anyway, enough about my job! I do hope you enjoyed this chapter!
