First off, the song used in Kol's note to Cara was Call Me, by Shinedown! For all of you asking out there!

Secondly: Thanks for the reviews everyone! You are all awesome, and I love you!

And then lastly: The reason for this fast update is because I am far too sick right now to deliver papers, haha. I have a terrible cold, so my head is stuffed with wet towels -or at least that's what it feels like-, so there could be some (more) mistakes in my English in this chapter. I apologise beforehand!

Most of you say Cara and Kol are endgame, and that they should get back together soon. I just hope that even though that's the ultimate goal, this chapter won't feel rushed!

Enjoy!

Birthday Blues

'A while? You're joking right? If it is about the calling, then yeah, you never call, but since we talked? I just texted you that I came out of class early!'

'I know,' Cara said. 'I saw the texts.. How are you holding up since we broke up?'

'I told you last night that I was doing fine, and that you were right. It wasn't working anymore. Remember?'

Cara could hear John was getting impatient. She took a deep breath.

'I don't remember, because I wasn't there.'

'What do you mean, you weren't there? I was sitting right next to you! Cara, is everything alright?' Cara hated how worried he sounded.

'I'm fine. Perfectly fine, really. I guess.' Cara sighed. 'John, I need to tell you something. You won't believe me, but I swear I'm not making it up. I also need you to keep quiet until I'm done, okay?'

She took John's silence as a yes. She launched into her story of that she somehow ended up in Mystic Falls. She recapped everything that had happened, excluding the love part, and ended with her turning into a vampire.

'You are actually serious, aren't you?' John sounded skeptical, but she knew, that he knew, she would never lie to him. 'That would explain you holding back here a bit more. You seemed a little out of it.'

John had a few more questions, and Cara answered all of them. John was especially curious as to how her phone was working. 'Witches. Of course.'

'I could try to prove I'm here,' Cara said. 'Give me a sec, I'll try to send you a pic of my new vamp-face.'

She heard John's chuckle as she put the phone down. She focused on her memory of the smell of blood, and even though it still made her shiver, she felt the veins crawl underneath her eyes and her fangs growing. She couldn't believe she was actually doing this. She hated taking selfies.

She posed, put up her thumb, and snapped the pic. She quickly sent it to John, hoping it would work. A few seconds later she heard John gasp.

'I am still processing this, but I guess I believe you. If that were make-up, it should've taken you longer to put that on.'

Cara just laughed and she felt the veins disappear.

'So,' John said. 'I guess there is a reason you called me? Your parents and pets are fine, you know.'

Cara smiled. 'That's good to know, but there is indeed a reason why I called. It will hurt you, and I feel like a bitch to even talk to you about this, but you are the only one I sort of have. I know I need to let go of my old life, because we have established I can't get back, but I just needed to talk to you one more time. And ask you for advice.'

'This is gonna be about other guys, right?'

Cara rolled her eyes. 'Yep. And I hope you are okay with it. So, here goes. First off, as you know Damon is kind of my buddy. We sort of made out a couple of times, but then Kol came. As you know, I have a weak spot for him. We fell in love, blah, blah, blah, you know the drill, all was fine and well… Until he killed Jeremy. My best friend. I shut down my emotions, they had to vamp me to get them back. Obviously I was extremely pissed at Kol, so I ran away. With Jeremy. Now we are in this hotel room, and well… We may or may not have kissed yesterday. It felt good, but still like there was something wrong. Or missing. I'm not sure.' She caught her breath and went on. 'This morning I woke up to Damon banging on the door. He came to bring us clothes and apparently Kol had given him notes for me and Jeremy. What Jer's note said, I don't know. He tore it to pieces and threw it away. My note had the lyrics of Call Me in it, from Shinedown.'

'Wow.. That song's intense,' John interrupted. 'Oh sorry, keep going.' Cara rolled her eyes.

'Yeah, I know right! And now Damon and Jeremy are out getting breakfast, and I am sitting here, not knowing what to do! I feel like I should talk to Kol, but what if Jeremy is right? What if all the feelings for Kol come rushing back? Plus, he left town. No one knows where he is!'

John stayed silent for a moment. 'You know I know you better than anyone, right?'

'Yeah…. Why?'

'So you also know I am not going to sugarcoat this for you?'

'Seriously, John!' Cara heard John chuckle on the other end.

'Fine. You are mad for that Kol kid. Not that I'm surprised, you're here, crushing on the guy that plays him. I know you are also mad at him. But like you said, you need to talk to him. The guy obviously feels sorry, and lets you come to him, instead of the other way around, which would only annoy you. That kiss with Jeremy, it meant nothing. Just a way of escaping what you truly feel. I'm not saying you should run back to him, because obviously he screwed up big time. Doesn't matter if the best friend is totally in love with the girlfriend, you just don't kill him. Period. I suggest you talk to Jeremy about this. Whatever you decide, you can't do it behind his back. But, if it were up to me, I'd call that Kol kid. You can at least hear what he has to say.'

Cara nodded. John nailed it at every little thing. She still didn't want to admit her feelings for Kol. She was still too mad. But a call couldn't hurt right?

'Ugh. I feel so bad for Jeremy right now… But you're right. As always. Awful.'

John laughed. 'From what I heard about Jeremy, he will understand. He knew the whole time, while you kept denying it. It will hurt him, sure, but if we can still be friends after all of our crap, than the two of you surely can.'

'I'm glad to hear we're still friends,' Cara said smiling.

'So am I,' John said. Cara could feel his smile through the phone. 'But, since you are in a completely different universe, you probably didn't get my facebook message, did you?'

'Ehm, no? But what could be that important that you need to tell me?'

'Well, I don't know what time it is at your place, and if you even are at the same date, but right here, it's your birthday. So…. Congratulatiooooons!'

Cara quickly checked the date on her other phone. John was right. It was her birthday. How did she miss this?

'Thanks, I guess. I had no idea.. Seriously, who forgets their own birthday? Anyways, what did you get me?'

'I got you the books of Game of Thrones. You were happy enough with it,' John laughed.

'Oh wow. That's just awesome. Thank you so much! Too bad I can't read them here,' Cara said. She forgot her own birthday. That was a new low. Even for her. 'Well, I guess I have to treat myself to something nice today!'

'You go do that, and I'll go and catch my bus. I guess we won't talk later, so I'm gonna wish you all the best of luck!'

Cara smiled and hung up. She put the phone down and stared at Kol's note. What a great way to start a birthday.

When Damon and Jeremy walked up to the room, Damon suddenly stopped.

'What is it?' Jeremy asked annoyed.

'Cara's talking to someone. I'm trying to figure out who it is,' Damon snapped back.

Jeremy rolled his eyes, but was intrigued all the same.

'Ugggh,' Damon snarled. 'Why is she talking to that douche? And why is she asking him for advice?'

Jeremy raised an eyebrow. 'Who? Seriously Damon, I don't have vampire super hearing.'

Damon ignored him and suddenly his face changed. 'I did not see that one coming, that's for sure,' Damon said stunned.

Jeremy whacked Damon in the shoulder.

'OW! What was that for? Oh. Right. Sorry. Cara is talking to John, about what to do with Kol's note. Don't worry, she will talk to you about it.'

'And what didn't you see coming?' Jeremy asked, growing impatient. Damon seriously was annoying.

'It's Cara's birthday today. Did you know that?'

Jeremy shook his head. 'We should get in there, and remember, we didn't hear anything, kay?'

Damon rolled his eyes but agreed all the same.

The door opened and Cara quickly wiped her tears away.

'You're back! Great, because I am starving!'

Damon smirked. 'Good, because I stopped by the nearby hospital to fetch you a blood bag. Sure, Jer here would do for a while, but one day he won't be around, so drink up!' He flung the bag towards her and Cara caught it.

'Gross. But thanks. Any real food for me in there as well?'

Jeremy chuckled. He seemed a little tense, but then again, she had no idea what his note said.

'Yeah there is, don't worry. We got plenty.'

An uncomfortable silence settled between them, and as soon as Damon had finished his breakfast he got up.

'I'm going to go now. I see you read your note, so my work here is done. I have plenty of work to do back home.'

He walked up to Cara and gave her a big hug.

'You do what you have to do, okay?' Damon whispered into her ear. Cara nodded and gave a small smile.

Damon nodded a goodbye to Jeremy and walked out the door.

As soon as the door had shut behind him Cara put down her breakfast. Jeremy followed her lead when he noticed she was holding out a piece of paper. He took it from her, and read it quickly. His heart sank. This note would make any girl fall back in love, especially if doing something like this was way out of style.

He looked up at Cara, who was staring at him intently.

'You need to talk to him.'

Cara nodded. 'I know. But I'm scared of what will happen when I talk to him face to face. Plus, I have no idea where he is. He actually left Mystic Falls. I haven't tried to call him yet. I thought I should talk to you first.'

'That's nice of you,' Jeremy gave a small smile. 'I'm glad I never actually got the time to believe we could work together.'

Cara's face fell. 'I'm so sorry! It's just-'

Jeremy smiled. 'Don't worry, really. I know you wouldn't ever say it to me, or even to yourself, but that kiss was awkward. Sure, it felt good and all, but it was still awkward. Best friends shouldn't kiss each other. Plus, it already complicated lots of things. I thought a lot about it, and I talked to Damon,' his face wrinkled with disgust. 'To Damon. I still can't believe I did that, but I think we are just better off as friends.'

'You are serious about this?' Cara asked hesitantly.

Jeremy held open his arms. 'I am! Now get your ass over here and hug this out, and then we are going to figure out what you are going to say to Kol when you call him!'

Klaus grumbled annoyed when he walked up to the door to open it. No one was ever foolish enough to come to his house without him knowing. Except for Cara, but he could deal with that. Cara was an exception. One that had left. He still felt like he should call her, but Elijah told him not to. Apparently Elijah was convinced she'd be back soon.

He opened the door and felt the need to shut it again when he saw the delivery guy with a huge bouquet of roses. Instead of doing that, he managed a smile as he accepted them, together with another package that was apparently part of it all.

The delivery guy left and Klaus shut the door. Immediately he inspected the bouquet, to find out who it was for, and who it was from. When he found the note, he sighed.

'Rebekah! Could you get these flowers in some waters?' Klaus shouted.

'I am not your little slave, you know,' Rebekah said while walking down to him. 'But fine. Who are they from?'

Klaus handed his sister the card that was attached to the flowers. As soon as she opened it, some god-awful sound came out of it. When they focused on it, they recognized it as "Happy Birthday".

Rebekah's eyebrows wrinkled in confusion as she let her eyes wander over the card.

Happy Birthday Cara!
I hope you like the flowers, I had no idea what your favorites were! And don't worry, we will keep them alive together ;)

I hope you will do me the honors of wearing the dress I bought for you as a present during our private little dinner I have planned for us tonight. I am sure you will look stunning in it.

Let there be many years to come!

Much love,
Kol

Rebekah closed the card. 'You've got to be kidding me.. Poor Kol.. And damn Cara! I can't believe she didn't tell us when her birthday was! How am I supposed to plan a party like this?'

'I couldn't agree more.'

Rebekah and Klaus turned around and saw Damon leaning into their doorway.

'And what do you think you are doing here?' Klaus asked while folding his arms together.

'I am here to propose something to you, Rebekah,' Damon said sweetly. Rebekah raised her eyebrows as she put down the card. 'I see my expectations came true. Of course Kol knew about her birthday. Now, I am here to plan her a party. With you, and perhaps Caroline, if she's up for it. Next to the party planning, there is one thing I need you to do for me. It will be my birthday present to Cara.'

'Let's hear it,' Rebekah said smiling. She didn't particularly like Damon, but when he came with ideas like this, she was up for it.

'Get Kol to come.'

'What?' Klaus roared. 'No way, you are not going to put those two together!'

'Oh but I will. Rebekah might be able to get him back here under false pretenses, hopefully in time for him to sober up, since I am guessing whisky is his best friend right now, wherever he is.' Rebekah shot him a dark look. 'Cara read his note, and her anger is toning down. She wants to talk to him, and she probably will, but over the phone. You get him down here in time for the party, I will make sure Cara will be here as well.'

'How do you know their conversation will go well? What if it goes horribly, and they just want to kill each other when they see each other? Or what if Kol goes after Jeremy again?' Klaus asked with raised eyebrows.

'Why wouldn't their convo go well? He still loves her, would do anything to get her back, and she needs to hear what he has to say. I have a feeling that whatever Kol will say, Cara will love it. She still loves him, even if she is too scared to admit it. It was obvious in her eyes this morning.' Damon smirked. 'And about Jeremy. I don't think even Kol is stupid enough to make that mistake again.'

Rebekah nodded. 'Then it's settled. I will go to work immediately. Cara will probably let you know when she has talked to Kol, so you tell me when that happens. I can't call him before that, it would be too obvious. Party is set for this Saturday, so you get to work as well!'

Damon saluted her and Rebekah rolled her eyes. 'But! Don't let Cara come before the actual party. You will go pick her and Jeremy up, bring the dress Kol has picked out for her, and you make sure she doesn't arrive early. We can't have them running into each other.'

'Fair point. I will keep that in mind.' Damon turned around, and bowed slightly to Klaus, just to mock him. 'I wish you the very best of luck, and I will talk to you soon.'

When the door closed behind him, Klaus turned to his sister.

'I'm putting my trust in you right now. If you say this will go well, then it'd better go well.'

'Yeah, yeah, whatever,' Rebekah waved him off. 'Just you wait and see until Saturday, and in the meantime, stay out of this. You just might ruin it.' In a fit of happiness she pecked Klaus on the cheek as she trotted upstairs to start planning.

I had writted my AN before writing the actual chapter, and trust me. It turned out way longer than I had in mind, haha. It just kept going! I hope you liked it!
