Death Note

Chapter 53

It didn't take long until all the victims I had just murdered were broadcasted on the news channels. The police are already suspecting another Kira case, but now with knowledge of what power the Death Note possesses. It won't take them long to figure out that I have a book. Millie has been giving me tips to keep this mishap separated from my life. I knew that she was a criminal but it seemed like she knew more then what she was letting on. Too much stress was weighing on my mind to worry about what roles she played other than being L.E.K. But if there was one thing I noticed is that she has surprising deductive skills.

"Given that you had written all these names late at night, and on a weekend too, it could be a little more difficult for anyone to suspect a high school student. As long as you are cautious of what time you decide to kill people, it no longer matters what death's you give your victims."

"I don't think I can handle all of this. I mean my life is practically over."

"Are you giving up so quickly?" She asked, looking down on me with a dark scowl. "If you give me back the Death Note, for all you know I could give it to one of your friends. People could still die and it will be your fault. You have the option of what to do here."

The tone in her voice had made me feel threatened and concerned. I had a good feeling that if I just gave up the book, she would most likely kill me instead of taking my memories. I was at a loss in this situation. But I guess I could somehow cope with the stress and keep the book hidden.

I looked down at the page full of names. It made my stomach turn with the idea that I would be hiding a weapon in my drawer, but what other choice do I have?

"How did Light Yagami deal with this?" I asked struggling to hide my shaking tone.

"He didn't. He simply thought 'justice' and let the Kira idea get to his head," she answered.

So she does know more then what I thought.

"But he still died in the end…" My voice grew weak.

She rested a hand on my shoulder.

"Don't think you are equal with a God and you'll be fine."

I turned to say something, but she slipped away into the shadows, unnoticed.

Already Near's small team were beginning to advance into this new Kira case. The employees were beginning to pull old files and store other highly classified documents, in case something was to happen to Nate.

Millie stood in a corner, watching the scene. Near was building a tower out of dice, on his desk while wearing an old mask on the side of his head. It was the same mask he had with him to confront Light Yagami that he was Kira. Millie remembered that day well. She remembered Light's pathetic attempt to frame Near, how many times he was shot and how she wrote Mikami's name down on a piece of the Death note. It seemed so long ago but the memory remained clear.

She walked forward towards Near and felt three rushing workers walk through her. She hated the feeling, but kept going until she was standing next to Nate. She watched him gradually balance more die on separate towers. She pressed two fingers on the side and knocked one tower down. The noise had seemed to capture a few people's attention, but they pressed on with their work, pretending not to see anything.

"What ever happened to us, Nate? You, me and Mello, we all used to be so close… what happened?" She asked, even though her presence wasn't recognised.

Near began to rebuild the tower. It upset Millie knowing that she was unknown, so she picked up a dice and placed it on the rest of the cubes. Near's motion stopped when he saw the object fly on its own. Millie then stretched an arm over the picture frame, containing the only physical memory left of the three kids, and knocked it onto the glass face.

"Do I need to type it out for you? I'm right here."

Nate knew something was around trying to get his attention, but what could he do? Look around trying to find someone dead? Their faces wouldn't be visible. He simply fixed the picture by placing it back into its upright position and then resumed his motions of stacking dice.

Millie looked at him with disappointment. "I miss you," she said softly. "I hope I will get to see you properly someday."

I was sitting on the edge of my bed, already dressed in my pyjamas. The last bit of light in my room was a dimly lit lamp sitting on a bed side table. The Death Note was locked away in a desk drawer and I began imagining a future with the Death Note like somehow coming face to face with the real Near or going completely psychotic with killing people. There was always that fear of death glooming over my shoulder, just waiting for me to slip up again so it could take me away from this world forever.

My eyes grew heavy with sleep. It has been a while since Millie left, and I figured that she wasn't going to come back until tomorrow. At least tonight, she won't be there to push me off my own bed.

I reached over and turned off the light. Darkness engulfed my room, making objects look like shadowy figures. I lay on my side, having a hard time sleeping; still thinking about what kind of options I had. Maybe Millie wouldn't kill me if I gave up the book. But what if someone else gets it? I messed up big time…

At some point my eyes had closed, with the loose thought of terror beginning to fade into the back of my mind as my subconscious took over, plunging me into a deep sleep.
