Chapter 52: cold

The pain in his chest was excruciating, like it was tearing him from the inside out; it felt so real that he could hardly move in his seat.

He turned as he saw movement in his eye; Hail stood there smiling at him with tenderness as she brought up her hand and waved a few of her fingers at him in silent greeting.

But as suddenly as she waved she fell to her knees clutching her head desperately.

"Hail?" He asked worriedly trying to rise from his chair but he was yanked back as chains wet with streaming blood wound his body to the chair till he couldn't even flinch as the metal cut into his skin.

Hail screamed in anguish as one hand came down and clutched her arm, nails dug straight through skin bringing forth her own blood that dripped nervously to the ground.

"Hail!" But she didn't hear him as he noticed a man standing behind her with a pistol pointed at her head.

He opened his mouth to scream her name but when her name was screamed it wasn't him who did it.

"HAILEY!" The name was not familiar to him as he turned to see a young girl with brown hair and blue eyes. "HAILEY! DON'T DIE!" He tore to look back at Hail just as a gunshot rang, Hail fell to the ground, blood splattered, some of it landing on L's cheek. "HAILEY NOOOO!" The girl's screech was loud and it echoed throughout his mind.

He opened his eyes to see the girl holding Hail's head in her hands, tears dripped down her face and landed on Hail's face.

"Hailey…" Her voice trailed of and then she stood and stared at him. Her hands were coated in blood from Hail; but she had older blood covering across her tanktop and pants, her hair coated in it. A small hole was in the middle of her forehead.

"L, I need you to do me a favor." The tears dried up around her eyes as she stood there giving of a powerful aura. L stared up at her forgeting the chains that held him. "Protect my sister, she had a haunting fate if played out wrong...imagine her life like a chess game, one wrong move and she loses." The girl said then pointed a finger to her head. "Use your brains, you're good at that….while you can anyway." She smiled and then vanished leaving L strapped to a chair as blood began to fill the room he was in.

L fought against the binds trying to free himself as the sticky liquid climbed up him rising with each second.

His face was covered, his nose filled, coughs left him and just like that he was drowning.

Dying. As his vision became black and white he felt the blinding pain go through his chest...almost like...a...heart attack. But he was already dead.

L eyes opened, his breathing hard as he fought to clear his throat enough to breathe probably,. his hand came up to clutch his chest which still had an aching feeling to it.

Calming his breathing he gazed up at the ceiling, what had he just dreamed of? He didn't usually sleep but when he did he didn't dream things like that.

Closing his eyes he reopened them to realize that the ceiling he was looking at was not his own...where was he? L looked up and noticed that he was in Hail's room, he must have fallen asleep while waiting for her.
L's eyes widened. He had been waiting for Hail, where was she?
He said up quickly and looked around the room, there was no sign of her. Even though it was quite not like L to be so worried he felt them flash through him as he rose up and knocked on the bathroom door which he opened to find was definitely empty. Inspecting the room he immediately noticed that the back door was unlocked.

"Hail?" He asked sliding the door open. L's eyes widened beyond normalness as he saw Hail leaning up against one of the poles of the balcony, her feet dangling of. If she were to move even the slightest either direction L was positive that she would fall.

He walked over trying desperately not to run for fear of waking her and having her fall. He kneeled next to her and pulled her away till she was leaned up against his chest.

"Hail? Hail are you ok?" L sat there, holding her to him, he shivered as her cold body met his, he then remembered his dream. "Hailey…." Well it was worth a shot.

"Hailey?" He asked shaking her slightly tracing his finger around her cold chin; she was freezing under his touch, she was so cold.

And she still didn't move.

The coldness seeped into L's fingers as he pulled them back staring down at the unmoving body for a second; he felt his heart thump painfully as if it were being torn into tiny pieces.

"WATARI!" L called trying to still remain calm but having Hail not waking up was putting him over the edge.

As if waiting to be called the older gentlemen ran into the room and knelt next to to L and the unconscious Hail.

"Miss Hail?" He placed his hand on her shoulder trying to ease her out of her sleep, then placed his two fingers to her neck feeling for a pulse.

"Hmmm." Watari stood up and took out his phone and began dialing a number. L turned his blank face to Hailey and also felt for a pulse...there was a pulse but it was so faint….like the heart was barely even able to beat.

"Come L, Hail needs a doctor now." Watari said sliding back in as L stood and picked Hail up, her head bouncing dangerously at the movement, her coldness seeped through her clothing, her skin like ice itself. She was to cold for his liking, so cold

Pure ice.

"Please be ok Hail…..Hailey." He looked at her tenderly before following Watari as quickly as he could.

"HAHAHAHA!" Racklen laughed evily as he stared down into the human realm.
"What's so funny?" Casner groaned obviously just awakening from a nap, he glanced his red eyes towards Racklen who continued to laugh.

"Hahaha, come here and see poor Hailey!" Casner sighed before getting up and peered down into the hole. He could see Hail being carried by the man known as L.

"What's wrong with her?" Casner turned to Racklen.

"Ryuk did tell her about touching a notebook, he should have told her that by touching it it has made her extremely weak and in danger of dying from all her other health problems. Back in the human world she was not very healthy barely surviving of of the stuff the doctors prescribed here. But being in this world she didn't need it because here she could do anything….well till the notebook touched her, now she is completely weakened….meaning…" Racklen trailed of causing Casner to tap his foot impatiently.

"Meaning what?" He asked boredly.

"Meaning that if Light was smart, he'd kill her with the notebook now. He can now." Racklen smiled evilly as he watched the poor human girl's heart tremble as if she had heard him.

Author: ok I am so sorry for people who I wasn't able to tell. I got another chapter done and I must say this one was quite interesting. We have spirits entering the story, which I mean by Hailey's little sister Elizabeth. L's beginning to have weird dreams, and Hail won't wake up. On top of that Light can kill her now...but if he finds out, would he want to? How far will Light go?
