Mako's Message: This is becoming a bad habit.
Anyway, this is a story I've had in mind for a couple years now. At least three, actually. It was going to be a one shot for after I finished Precocious Crush, but I figured, why sit on it when I could use it now?
So what we have here is a fluffy little story that I hope you all enjoy get sappy over. And have a good laugh or two.
Kick-ass and Hit Girl had become famous(or infamous, depending on which circles you ran in) across the continent. Their legend had even spread across the oceans. But what more could you expect from the two people who had defeated the two most audacious and dangerous criminals in the last century, and had all but tamed the wild west that New York had turned into.
Of course, there were people who thought it was only right that they cleaned up the mess, since those same people believe Kick-Ass and Hit Girl where the ones who made it in the first place.
They had also become the icons of the movement of people around the world who were taking to the streets to do what they could to help, though not all wore costumes.
Indeed they had accomplished much in the years they worked together.
They had also fallen in love.
It was the sort of thing that is bound to happen to two young people who spend almost all their days together. It wasn't surprising to anyone who knew them either. Whether they knew who they were or not.
Hit Girl taught him how to fight, how to be strong, and gave him the edge he needed to survive.
Kick-Ass taught her empathy, how to have a heart, and kept her from being nothing but a killer.
They were two sides of the same coin. Yin and Yang. Truly, they were what the other needed to be complete.
Still, they were a little more than five years apart in age, so it took awhile for them to...shall we say, "make it official". But when they did, they made it official all night long.
Surprisingly, or perhaps not, their life didn't change much afterwards, it simply included more "official couple" things.
Except for one thing. It was a simple thing, really, very easy to overlook. Especially since they had been hanging out since before either of them had feelings for the other. It actually took them a few months to figure out that something was missing from their relationship.
They'd never gone on a date.
They had hung out, obviously. They'd chilled at each other's house. They'd gone out to eat and to see movies, both with friends and by themselves, participated in many activities together(most of which qualified as training, but still), and even spent the night together. But they'd never gotten dressed up for each other. Never went out to a nice restaurant. Never set aside time that was specifically and only for them.
Hit Girl, or Mindy, as her family and friends knew her, didn't think this was a big deal. They were always there for each other, spent almost every day together, at least for a little bit, and of course they spent their nights together(in AND out of costume).
Kick-Ass, or Dave as we'll be calling him since he won't be in costume, disagreed. There were certain things that only happened once in a lifetime, and he was damned sure that as her first(and hopefully only) boyfriend, he was going to be the one to take her on her first date. Besides, it was just the sort of thing you did with woman you loved, and he knew from past experience that he was not going to let the lack of a date, first or otherwise, be used against him in some future argument.
Since Dave insisted that they needed to go on a proper first First Date, Mindy thought they could just go the next day, or the next weekend if he wanted to put it off.
Dave, however, had different ideas. If they had come to the realization a couple months, or even weeks, earlier, then he might have agreed with Mindy. But they didn't, and Valentine's Day was right around the proverbial corner. So instead of getting this "first date" out of the way as soon as possible, Dave put it off by almost a full month.
Then he decided to annoy Mindy by making himself scarce for the next month.
They still trained together, still patrolled together, but he put a serious block on how much time they spent together when they weren't "working". The worst part for Mindy was that, because he did go to college and have a job, she didn't realize what he was doing until the middle of the second week. She might have gotten mad at him about it too, except by that point she was actually starting to look forward to their Date.
This didn't make the lack of Boyfriend any less annoying however.
And as she started to look forward to it more and more, she got more and more anxious for it to arrive, and as she got more and more anxious...she actually started getting ready for it.
She went out shopping and picked out some new clothes. Things that she normally wouldn't wear, but she was assured looked very good on her. Shoes included. Then it was suggested that she cut her hair. She wasn't sure if this was a good idea, since she was convinced that Dave liked girls with long hair, but she thought she might be able to get away with it if it was still somehow familiar.
For his part, Dave didn't spend nearly as much time focusing on his appearance. He had other things to think about. But when he went to pick up Mindy, he wore a nice button up shirt, khaki pants, and a sport coat. When he knocked on the door and Mindy opened it, she was surprised to see he'd also done something with his hair. Instead of the fluffy, or on bad days bushy, curls, they were sleek, shiny, and almost sculpted, as if he was someone's drawing come to life.
It made her want to play with his hair more than ever.
But she wasn't nearly as surprised as Dave was. The sight of a smiling Mindy in a beret, a bob cut, a blouse, mini skirt, thigh high stockings, a coat that almost reached her ankles, and heels... it was a struggle to keep his mouth shut and he was pretty sure he'd had to reboot his brain.
When he was finally able to speak he asked, "Are you ready to go?"
She answered, "Am I ever," and practically skipped out the door. When she reached the sidewalk, she looked both ways before twirling to look at him, "So where's your car? I didn't hear you drive up."
Dave said, "Well, uh... I thought we'd go by subway. I thought it would be nice if we were able to focus on each other instead of the road."
Mindy blinked. The laughed before smirking, "We could have taken a cab then, dumbass."
Dave raised his eyebrows and said, "Well, yeah," as he put his hands in his pockets and looked at his shoes, "But I didn't think you'd be afraid of a little leg work," before smirking at her.
She scoffed, "As if," then turned to walk off. Then abruptly stopped and turned back to him, "Which way are we going?"
Dave smiled and pointed. Mindy turned and strode off, chin held high.
When they weren't on the job, a lot of their time together was usually spent in comfortable silence. Perhaps they'd be working on homework together, or just resting against each other while watching television or listening to music after a strenuous workout. Not that they didn't have lively and engaging conversations, it was simply that when they spent as much time together as they did, it was near impossible to fill the time up with conversation.
Now though, as they walked to the subway, there wasn't a second of silence between them. It suddenly felt like they had to fill the other in on absolutely everything they did without the other over the last month. Work, school, even shopping for the clothes they were wearing, it was all a story that needed to be told.
And of course their trains of thought were frequently derailed and rerouted by something one would say, reminding the other of this or that. Sometimes leading to the continuation of a conversation from months ago, sometimes bringing up something they had completely forgotten but totally had to tell them all about.
Once they were on the subway though, the conversation frequently came to a screeching halt, as it was about to branch into vigilante territory and that was something they could NOT talk about with other people around. This amused them to no end, as they both seemed to know exactly what the other was about to say and caused them to share knowing glances and laugh. Sometimes giggle.
It was a good thing they did too, because they knew at least a couple people were paying enough attention to them to shoot them knowing glances at these times. If only they really knew.
The trip to their destination was perhaps the most fun they'd had together in ages. Mindy was almost giddy, and Dave felt lighter than he had in...he didn't know how long. Of course, that could have also been because he hadn't gone so far on foot without twenty pounds of gear on in years.
It ended, literally, before Mindy realized it. Despite only Dave knowing where they were going, she'd gotten a few steps ahead of him and Dave had to reach out and stop her when they got to their destination.
She stopped and looked at the building in front of them, "We're going to a museum?"
"Yeah," Dave said, "I figured it's the most date like thing we've never done."
"But a museum?"
"Oh come on," he said, grabbing he hand and pulling her towards the doors, "It'll be fun."
Mindy rolled her eyes but ran with him.
Neither of them were big into art, except when it related to comic books of course, so they weren't really sure what they should do or even where to start doing it. Despite it being his idea, even Dave was starting to feel a bit awkward about the whole thing after a few minutes.
Dave was about ready to admit that it had been a bad idea, but just before he could open his mouth, while standing in front of a nude statue, Mindy said, "Why is it that all the naked guys have blank expressions and tiny limp dicks while the girls look like they just got fucked?"
Luckily for them, Dave was able to stop laughing before security had to come speak to him.
The Date quickly turned around as they began asking each other the most absurd and, when no one else was around, raunchy questions about the pictures and sculptures they were looking at. Their good mood did get a little out of hand at times though, and they had to avoid security once or twice, but they did end up enjoying the exhibits, albeit in their own way.
An hour or so later, Mindy stopped suddenly in a hall. "Hey," she said, grabbing on to Dave's sleeve, "You want to get something to eat?" she asked, pointing with her thumb at a sign directing them to the cafeteria.
Dave shook his head, "Mindy, this isn't just our first date, or even our first Valentine's day. This is your first date. Ever. We're not eating at a cafeteria."
"Oh. Okay, so, did you have somewhere in mind then?"
Dave smiled at her, "I do, actually"
Half an hour later, they were seated at a nice cafe a block from the museum. Dave was enjoying being there more than Mindy, but that was mostly because he was amused by Mindy who sat glowering at her menu, "If you can't describe a dish in less than a paragraph you need to just give up."
Dave snorted.
"Seriously! I mean, look at this shit!" she said, slapping her menu
"Yeah, I know," Dave said, nodding along, "It is kinda pretentious."
"Then why did you pick this place?"
"Well, I wanted this to be special, ya know? Didn't want it to be any of our usual places. And the food is supposed to be really good."
"We'll see about that," she said as a waitress came by to take their orders. She ended up picking at random while Dave ordered a soup, salad, and sandwich meal.
"Before our food comes," Dave said, reaching into his jacket, "I wanted to give you this."
"Oh god dammit," Mindy said, dropping her head into her hand.
Dave stopped, "What?"
"I completely forgot to get you anything."
Dave smiled and laughed, "Don't worry about it. You putting all this extra effort into your appearance is kind of a gift all by itself."
A slight blush rose to Mindy's cheeks, "You really like it?"
"I do. But I think normal Mindy is best Mindy. It suits you more."
Mindy smiled and fidgeted while biting her lip, then bounced in her seat and said, "Alright, so what'd you get me?"
Dave grinned and pulled a large manilla envelope out of an inside pocket, and said "Oh, nothing much Just a comic book," but the grin on his face said it was anything but "just a comic book."
Mindy eagerly lifted the flap and pulled the comic out. Until she saw the title. "You got me a Hit Girl comic." Then she resumed pulling it out, but with much less enthusiasm, "I don't recognize this artist though." Her expression became more confused as she saw more of it, "What issue is this?" When she pulled it clear of the envelope her eyes were wide with shock, "What is-"
"I had it commissioned," He said, smiling widely as she flipped through the pages.
"Wow..." She flipped another page then abruptly shut it and slid it back into the envelope, "I'll have to save that for later." Then she reached across their small table to pull Dave close enough to kiss, then sat back down just in time for their food to come.
The food turned out to be worth putting up with the uppity atmosphere, though Mindy didn't seem in the mood to savor it. For one reason or another she decided that she wanted to head home as soon as possible.
The trip back to Mindy's home was just as conversation filled as the trip out, except this time, they were discussing what they'd seen at the museum.
Dave walked with her to the door, but when she opened it and walked in, he made no move to follow her. She turned to look at him before stepping back to the door. "So," she said, as she leaned on the door frame, then asked coyly, "Don't you want to come inside...so you can come inside?"
Dave scoffed, "Mindy, I don't know what kind of guy you think I am, but I don't fuck on the first date."
Mindy started to laugh but then saw that Dave wasn't, "You...cannot be serious. You've had your dick in me more than the urinals at school."
"Eh heh," Dave laughed awkwardly while blushing, "Yeah..." and stepped into the house and shut the door behind him.
