Chapter 51

*Riddick*

He jumped over the rise leaping towards the nearest Necromonger, the soldier turned and looked up at his descending form in surprise just as Riddick took him out with his shiv. He grabbed the fallen Necro's gun and turned his arm shooting a blast at the next man coming at him around the spires. He didn't even need to turn around, since the damn soldier was making that much noise. He pulled his blade out of the first soldier and barely even had a moment before another one came at him. He growled and sliced the blade across his throat, and then he too fell away.

He shot two more. Everyone was using guns, everyone but Rehtaeh, she was jumping from shadow to shadow taking the Necros down with her menagerie of weapons. It was like she was in stealth mode. He wished for a half a second that he could stop to watch, but there was no time. Another came at him weapon raised, Riddick locked him in an arm-bar and turned him around, driving his blade into his back, shooting down another. More were coming too many all at once.

"Kyra," He called to her, she jumped to him immediately and he swung her around, her heel blades at the ready he spun her around through the air. They knocked back at least five of the Necros creating enough space for him to grab his Ulak blades and jump into the thick of the battle. One after another the Necros came at him and he sliced them apart. Spinning and slashing he fought them back one fell, then two, then another and another.

He was aware of Rehtaeh being hit with Necro fire power. It was a direct shot which threw her hard onto the stone walls of the runway. His heart stopped for a half a second before he saw the struggle as she tried to get back up, and heard the hard hit as Kyra slammed her hand into the other woman's belly. He was under attack and didn't have time to worry about her or Kyra.

The battle was going well considering they were completely outnumbered, they were taking down the Necromonger soldiers one by one. They were all working together to make their way to the flight deck and the ship within. Sybar was dead. There was no way that the man was coming back from the injuries he sustained.

Slicing his blade across the throat of yet another Necromonger when he noticed Kyra behind him, he grabbed her arm and tossed her at another tall Necro. She yelled as she flew through the air and landed on the soldiers shoulders dug her heel blades into his stomach and hauled him to the ground. The threat of the guards was taken care of, having been killed by Five and the Necro soldiers. All that remained was the Guv, Kyra and Rehtaeh and himself. He didn't count Five, if it hadn't been for Rehtaeh and his scaly armor the beast would have died long before, besides he wasn't human. He turned and was confronted by another Necro, he lashed out with his Ulak blades digging them both so deep into the man's neck with such velocity that his head flew off of his body.

They were coming at him fast and furious, one of them landed a lucky hit knocking his blade into the air. Didn't do the man any good, Riddick broke his neck just as he was attacked by the next soldier. He barely had time to knock them down much less out, and with his blade in the air he was weaponless. He knocked them down anyways. One of the Necros was going after Kyra as he was fighting hand to hand with another soldier, and finally the blade finally dropped landing in his hand he slit the man's throat then threw it at the man that was trying to kill Kyra. The blade went deep into the eye socket and the Necro dropped. Another one of Vaako's men came at him, he was fighting him hand to hand, and he just needed to get through him to get to Vaako. He was one hit away from ending it when a gravity blast hit the Necromonger he was fighting. The compression of the hit slammed into him as well, throwing him away from the dock doors his entire body spun recklessly through the air and pounded him relentlessly into the earth.

He was on the ground, in the middle of the runway approach to the hangar. He was trying to rise, struggling to get to his feet, the pain was immense. He looked up and watched as Rehtaeh attacked Vaako, her face was a mask of rage. They were fighting, and she was slowly gaining the upper hand when one of the Commanders men took a shot at her. From where he was on his hands and knees he watched in horror as her heavy flak jacket indented under the pressure of the impact. It went in so deep, he could hear the bones underneath shatter, he could hear the bone shred her flesh. It was a death blow.

He heard Vaako scream then raise his gun and shoot the offending officer. It was his words that enraged Riddick, it was the attempt to take what was his. "I wanted you alive. You were to be my prize for killing him. You were supposed to be mine."

"I will never be yours, I belong to Riddick." Her proud voice was weak, and even in death she was loyal only to him.

Vaako moved her to the ground and began to caress her as though she was already his, mourning her as though she was his lover. He would kill him for that alone, he would destroy the Necromonger Commander. Rehtaeh's head moved and she looked directly at him. He could not see her eyes behind the glasses, but the pain that suffused the rest of her face was unbearable. It was tearing him to pieces. Her right arm rose and stretched out, reaching for him, she wanted him.

Then the convulsions hit her, deep wracking blood filled coughs, as the airy bubbles frothed out of her mouth, she shook for several minutes as her body tried in vain to fight death. Her glasses fell away and he watched as her bright violet eyes with the silver pupils faded, the light from within her slipping farther and farther away. Then she was gone. There was blood everywhere, he could smell it from where he was, and her heart was beating no more. His whole world crashed around him in that single heartbeat. He wanted her back, he needed her back!

Vaako stood and turned away from the dead Shadow Mage, he turned to Riddick with a look of pained rage, and unmasked hate. He stalked towards him, Rehtaeh's blood splattered across his armor. Riddick looked back at Rehtaeh on the ground, trying to make sense of what happened. She was not supposed to die. She told him her soul was bound to his, making her harder to kill. She should not be dead. The beast, Five, moved to her side crying for her, trying to get her body to wake up by nudging and licking at her face. He looked over at Kyra and the desperate look on her face as she said, "Get up, please. Get up!"

He was able to get to his knees, was ready to rise, he would destroy all of them for taking her. She was his, and now she was gone. There was a scream building within him when he heard the Necro Commander say, "So you can kneel."

Vaako raised both of his blasters aiming them both directly at his chest. Time slowed, his heart beat twice when the world around him stopped. A portal opened up from the hangar and the world changed into the one he recognized from his dreams. There were mountains in the distance, and there were thousands upon thousands of grave stones from within them a woman approached. She walked right through Vaako as though Crematoria didn't even exist. He recognized her. It was the same woman who had come to him in Butcher Bay and again on Toombs ship. Shirah walked slowly through the graves, she glanced over at Rehtaeh on the ground before turning her eyes back to him, "I think you know now, I think you know who tore Furya apart."

She was right in front of him, her body was as solid as if she was not a figment of his dreams. She reached out, her hand open, her palm out and touched his chest as she had on the ship. "This mark carries the anger of an entire race, but it's going to hurt."

There was a blue glow coming from her fingers as she pressed her hand to his chest, and the glow began to spread throughout his chest and shoulders. The pain was nearly unbearable, he could feel the rage of so many souls as it poured into his body, spreading throughout his entire being. He wanted nothing more than to destroy these Necromongers. He saw then in his mind's eye the man who had tried to kill him at his birth. It was not his parents like he had been told, and it wasn't anyone from his home world. It was a monster. Lord Marshall Zhylaw was the murderer of his parents, his people, his planet. Lord Marshall Zhylaw was the one responsible for setting in motion the unfortunate events of Riddick's life. Shirah pulled her hand away and faded back to Furya as the effect of the mark began to take place. The pain was unbearable, it pulled at his muscles making them seize, he felt as though he was being pulled in every possible direction.

Time resumed and Vaako took his shot, the gravity energy mixed with the energy that was writhing within Riddick and blasted outwards throwing every Necromonger back and away. All but the Purifier was thrown. Even Riddick was thrown back, hard onto the flat surface of the runway. He lay on the ground, not moving. He wasn't dead, he could still hear and feel everything around him. The pain and rage of millions of people writhed within him, there was darkness as he stood and looked down at his body. He looked again over at Rehtaeh's body, it was as though some important part of it was missing. He remembered her telling him that her soul was fused with his, that it would make her harder to kill, but there she was, her very human body was dead. He felt darkness surround him, and thought for a moment that he too was dying. When suddenly he felt her, her hands on his face, warmth like no other caressed him. It was the warmth of her when she was wrapped in his shadow. Then he heard her voice, "I am not dead Riddick. I am not dead, as long as you fight and live on, I will always find a way to be with you."

She was just a dark frame barely visible, almost entirely transparent, and yet somehow, her violet and silver eyes shone within. She looked up at him there was pain there and desperation as she tried to get him to see her, feel her and hear her. He glanced at her body and felt the pain and rage grow within him again. He had lost her and had never told her what she meant to him, "Your body, that is a lethal blow, you cannot survive that."

The pressure of her hands on his face intensified. She moved closer to him, her face was fierce as she gave herself to him, binding herself to him. "I swear to you, Riddick, I will rise again. I don't know how but I will find a way. I am yours, body, shadow and soul; I swear it all to you. As long as you protect my soul, I will always return to you. I am your Shadow Mage, I am yours."

She stepped away from him and like she always did, she let him go to do as he pleased. She was always giving him his freedom, letting him choose his path. She swore herself to him, and swore she would find a way back to him. She was no liar. In all the years that he had known her she was the one person who was honest to him. He decided then that he would trust her to keep this promise and he chose to return to his body.

It felt like only moments later that he woke in the darkness of the hangar. How the hell did he make it in there? Five was snuffling his hand, his arm, shoulder and suddenly there was a cold nose in his face. A whimper and a growl elicited from the beasts throat as he seemed to be searching Riddick for something. He could hear metal being dropped on metal, he staggered to his feet and heard the roar of engines as something momentarily blocked the bright Crematoria sun. The Necromonger ship come into view, then turned towards the hangar and flew over top and out of sight. He looked up at it as it flew over. He had been gone just mere minutes. Every trace of lightness from the vision was gone, as the severity of what was happening hit him, drawing him back to reality. She was gone, it was just a dream a sad hopeful dream, her body was gone from its place on the runway. It was likely churned to ashes like the other bodies littering the ground, all that was left were the misshapen forms of melting armor and gear. Tricked into returning to this useless life by a dream, a vision, his unconscious mind was an asshole! Fuck!

Then he remembered the others. The Guv and Kyra were still alive when he last saw them, they should still be close by. Perhaps that was who was making the noises in the hangar. They should be prepping the ship for their escape. Five followed directly in his shadow sniffing around still looking, still waiting for something.

"Kyra," He said looking around for the girl, looking for the source of the noise. The first thing he noticed was that Toombs' ship was gone. There was a massive void where the ship once stood. In its place were several large metal crates, scattered haphazardly around the back of the bay. The Guv was gone too. Did Kyra go with him? Or did she go with the Necromongers? The second thing he noticed was that Five was laying at his feet looking intently at his shadow, whimpering as though in great pain, and looking completely expectant.

"I was supposed to deliver a message to you, if Vaako failed to kill you, a message from the Lord Marshall himself." The Purifier called out to him from beside the large cargo box, he was divesting himself of all the shiny trinkets that covered his form. He looked from Riddick, to Five and then back to Riddick. "He tells you to stay away from Helion, stay away from him, and in return you will be hunted no more. But Vaako will most likely report you as dead." The man walked slowly towards Riddick, stopping just feet away, "So this is your chance, your chance to do what no man has ever done."

"The girl, did she go with the prisoner?" Riddick asked not caring about the Lord Marshall.

"Vaako took the girl. The prisoner took off just minutes before you woke up, he will likely be shot down." The Purifier told him, his voice sounded almost grave.

"Where will they take her?" Riddick growled as he grabbed the other man's shoulder and throat, blocking his air way. The Purifier gasped painfully unable to speak, held up his hands in surrender before he reached up and opened his jacket, revealing the mark of Furya glowing faintly on his chest, the one that also glowed on Riddick's chest where Shirah had marked him. Riddick released him in confused frustration.

"We all began as something else." The Purifier told him, his face spoke of horrors and pain and regrets, "I have done, unbelievable things, in the name of a faith that was never my own, and he'll do to her what he did to me. The Necromonger in me warns you not to go back." The Purifier said softly, Riddick growled audibly, and the man continued, "But the Furyan in me hopes you won't listen." He held Irgun's blade up for Riddick to see and then dropped it to the ground, "God knows I've dreamed of it."

"I am sorry about your woman. She was right, the Necromongers, their souls are tainted. The conversion changes their soul and the faith twists them into something different." Five rose from where he was lying and moved to sniff at the Purifier and whined, cocking his head at him as though he expected something from him. The tall blonde man gave the beast a sad pat, before he turned and walked out into the light, allowing his flesh to be burned away. He didn't scream, didn't cry out in pain, he just allowed himself to be turned into dust and ash. Riddick looked on completely stunned, as he watched the man being churned into ash just outside in the light. It was as though the man were trying to atone for his sins, punishing himself for turning his back on his people and his faith. Five just watched the Furyan burn away with sad mournful eyes.

Riddick looked around the empty hanger. His entire plan was shot to shit. The Guv took the ship and likely wouldn't make it to freedom, The Necromongers were long gone, and unless there was some incoming transport he wasn't aware of, there was no other way of this asshole of a planet. Rehtaeh was gone. He had no idea what plans she made, and considering she sent her DNA to the Alliance, he did not like the idea of having Alliance soldiers show up just to lock him back up again. Five came back to his side, sniffing and pawing at his shadow and harrumphed as he sat looking at Riddick. "What the hell do you want, Five?"

The beast looked at him for a moment longer before resuming his examination of Riddick's shadow. It was like the beast thought he was hiding something in there.
