Let's try something a bit different, shall we?

For weeks the days had been filled with dreary rain and horrible thunderstorms as the ground became soft and wet. The guards were whiny over their soaked clothes and boots yet they stood as sentinels against the upcoming invaders. They would sulk and whine and carry on in the servants rooms and the lunch hall but the moment she entered, they would smile.
My wife had the capacity to induce protection. They would gladly lay down their lives for their mistress. At one time I would have been confident they would do so out of fear of reprisal but somehow they had slid past fear to respect. All she had to do was glance at them, a hand on her pregnant belly and they fell over themselves for a smile. Somehow my little frightened mistress had become a woman of her station. She was a vampire lady of the court and she finally was seen as one.
It was quiet in the manor and I was taking advantage of the silence to watch her. She had been slow to move during the week as she readied to give birth but even uncomfortable she strove to be apart of the war preparations. After a few hours of sleep and a short feeding she was sitting at her vanity, brushing her hair in soft, gentle strokes.
"If you weren't my husband, I'd find you creepy," she murmured softly. Her hand trembled as a wave of fatigue crept over her. I was beside her in an instant, tugging the brush from her hand. She sagged against me for a moment, her cheek pressed against my stomach in relief. "Thank you."
I cupped her face in my hand and watched as she nuzzled against me. She was paler than usual and a bit cool to touch. She was late and for every day she was late we grew more and more worried. In a surprise maneuver Klaus had not come when he promised. It was if the world was waiting for the birth of our child.
"How are you really?" I asked quietly. She had been fitful in sleep, unable to find even a few moments of rest before she grew too uncomfortable to remain in bed. Our child moved vigorously and when she could not sleep, I did not either. "Elena?"
"I'm all right," she replied simply. "I...I have to be."
"The baby will come soon," I said unconvincingly. She seemed no closer to her delivery than she was months before. It was as if the child had no desire to leave her protective womb to face an upcoming war. I could not blame him.
"As will Klaus," she replied. I knew she felt my stiffening as I considered the threat he posed to my family. "Have you heard from Stefan?"
"No." I answered. There was nothing else to say since I had no news. Stefan had grown silent before Klaus's threatening note and not one sign came after. We were operating blindly as Ric and Caroline tried to discover any rumblings from Klaus. So far it was as though the vampire lord had vanished. Not even his closest advisors were able to answer about his whereabouts.
"You look tired," she began.
"I look tired?" I chuckled. "You know you are always beautiful to me but you need rest."
"Mmm...the baby keeps me awake," she murmured. "I feel like a walking punching bag."
She sighed softly before I could reply, her eyes drifting shut in a moment of uninterrupted rest. As her body relaxed I swept her up into my arms and carried her to the couch in our chamber. Her body, although pregnant, was slight and fragile. Her eyes remained shut when a knock sounded at the door. I glanced up and shushed Ric as he slid into the room effortlessly.
"There is movement on the northern border," he said softly. "Bennett says the child will come in next three days."
"The doctor has been so hesitant to comment," I wondered.
"Not him," Ric replied. "Bonnie. She's been investigating the spiritual realm. They spirits are quite interested."
"So we prepare to lockdown," I said thoughtfully. "She will be surrounded by warriors at all time. I...if I fall you will take care of her."
"I would never have it any other way son," Ric responded as he clasped his hand on my shoulder. His grip was firm and unyielding. "She's my daughter and that is my grandson. Blood to blood."
"Blood to blood," I considered.
