Chapter Forty-Eight

Dean looks over when there's a knock on the door. He smiles at the sight of Kaitlyn and Kelsey. "Hi," he says as the walk in.

Kaitlyn smiles. "Hey," she says. "How'd you sleep?"

"Not too bad surprisingly. How about you?"

"Can't complain." She watches as Kelsey stops beside the bed. She can tell that she wants to climb up onto the bed with Dean.

"Come on up here." Dean smiles at Kelsey.

"Really?" Kelsey asks.

Dean nods. "Of course." He shifts a little so she can climb onto the bed. "Kaitlyn was right, you do look a lot like me."

Kelsey grins. "I like that I do." She lays beside Dean. "Do you remember anything?"

"Pieces." He looks at Kaitlyn. "So you had an odd smile on your face when you left yesterday. What was that about?"

Kaitlyn smiles as she sits down. "You called me Katie. You only started doing that when we got together."

Dean watches her carefully. "Yeah?" He grins. "That's something."

"Daddy, when can you come home?" Kelsey asks.

"I don't know. Probably not for a little while yet." He slides his fingers through her wavy hair. "God, you have my hair."

"I like my hair. And I like that I get it from you. Daddy, I want you to come home."

"As soon as I can I will be there." He frowns a little. "I don't know if I'll be able to climb the stairs."

Kaitlyn smiles a little. "We'll get everything figured out when it comes that time. Right now, let's worry about getting you better." She looks over when she hears someone walk in, gasping when she sees who it is. "Nikki?"

Nikki frowns as she looks at the other woman. "Oh, um… Kaitlyn."

"You're a nurse?"

Nikki nods. "Yeah, been here about a year. I just got transferred to this wing though." She licks her lips nervously. "Jonathan Ambrose… of course. Seth's best friend, Dean."

Kaitlyn nods. "Yeah."

Dean looks at Nikki. "How's the kid?" he asks.

Nikki grins. "Tyler is good. He's got a good father in my fiancé."

"Have you seen Nick?" Kaitlyn asks.

"No. Not since the custody hearing four years ago. I hear he's in jail though."

"Yeah, let's hope he stays there for a while." Kaitlyn watches as Nikki goes through Dean's chart.

"And this must be your daughter, Dean. She looks like you."

Dean nods. "She's mine."

"Are you remembering anything?"

Dean lets out a soft breath. "Pieces, but nothing big."

Nikki nods. "You're able to move everything still?"

He nods. "Yeah."

"Good." She goes over a few more things before looking at Kelsey. "I'm going to have to ask you to climb down for a few minutes. I need to check your Daddy's injuries."

Kelsey nods. "Okay." She kisses Dean's cheek before climbing off the bed. "Don't hurt him."

"I will do my best. What's your name, beautiful?"

"Kelsey."

"Beautiful name for a beautiful girl." She pulls Dean's sheet down to look at his side. She frowns when she sees not only the current injuries but also a scar. "Can I ask what happened? You have another scar?"

"I was shot."

"On the job?"

He shakes his head, wincing when Nikki starts cleaning his wound. "No, Nick shot me."

"Nick?"

"Yeah." He sighs. "Jackass doesn't know how to take she's done with him for an answer."

Kaitlyn frowns. "You remember that?" she asks.

Dean nods. "Yeah."

She smiles a little. "Good."

Dean watches as Kaitlyn walks back into his room that evening. He can't help but smile as he watches her set the food bag she has on the table. "Get anything good?" he asks.

"Just a sandwich," Kaitlyn answers. "Nothing too exciting." She sits down beside the bed. "How are you feeling?"

"I'm okay." He grabs a piece of paper. "Here. I wrote these things down. I'm not sure if they mean anything, but they came to mind."

She takes the paper from him. "January ninth." She smiles. "Kelsey's birthday. October seventh." She looks at Dean. "My birthday. May eighteenth is the day we were married. April sixth is the day you saved my life which was also the day we got together." She watches Dean. "Want me to continue?"

He nods. "Yeah. I'm obviously onto something."

She smiles. "Okay." She looks at the paper again. "Christmas…"

"Obviously I know what Christmas is."

"It's the day you officially proposed to me." She smiles.

He watches her. "We were already engaged then?"

She shrugs. "You never really asked me before that day, but you did put a ring on my finger. You asked in your own way. That was good enough for me."

"I don't deserve you, Kaitlyn."

Before either of them can say anything else, Paige walks in. She smiles at them. "Sorry to interrupt," she says. "But we have to take Dean down for some tests."

Kaitlyn frowns at the dark haired woman. "Is everything okay?"

Paige nods. "Yes. We just want to take a few more pictures of his shoulder to determine if surgery will be necessary. And we also need another scan of his head. We'll get one last x-ray of his leg too before scheduling that surgery."

"Okay." Kaitlyn looks at Dean again. "He's remembering a little."

"That's great news." Paige smiles as she steps to the end of the bed. "All right, Dean. You ready?"

"I guess so. Not like I have much of a choice."

"How long will it take?" Kaitlyn asks.

"For everything I would give it at least an hour."

"Okay. I think I'll head back and get Kelsey. She wants to see you before she goes to bed."

"Okay." Dean smiles at Kaitlyn as she stands up. "I'll see you soon."

Leaning down, Kaitlyn gives him a quick kiss. "Bye, Baby." She turns to leave but is stopped when Dean grabs her wrist. She looks at him once again.

"We're gonna get through this."

She smiles at him. "I know." She kisses him again. "See you soon."
