Kaoru finally caught up with him. He was standing ankle-deep in a river and his angry gaze was concentrated on the ever flowing waters. It was impossible not to notice his rage, the way his shoulders shook or the way the water seemed to jump when it neared him. His fury was tampering his control and the waters were reacting to it and to him as nature dictated they should.
"Kenshin," she said softly, voice guarded. He didn't respond or turn her way, no, he was too angry to. She knew she was deserving of his anger, he had done so much for her. He had taken care of her, even tried to save the last of her family… all for her sake, but here she was still making him even more upset. Pushing him away.
She knew why though.
She was afraid.
He was not someone she was bound to by duty. He was something more, different. She didn't know what she was doing, trying to stay with him, she didn't know how she should react or behave or what to expect. This was not right.
"Kenshin," she tried again, taking a step closer. "I'm sorry… I am just… afraid," she whimpered.
The red-haired man merely sighed, as if tired. "Scared of what?" he asked dully.
Kaoru's shoulders slumped and she turned away, "Of you… me… us," it was the only way she knew how to put her fears. She knew they were, must be, deeper than that but she hadn't had the time to sort through them yet, "I like you, Kenshin."
