Disclaimer: I don't own KHR or anything but my OC's
I woke up with a backache, feeling like an old crone, hungry, miserable and completely irate but all those feelings melted away to nothing when I realized that I was warm. My heart skipped a beat when my fingers grasped the warm fur of Dino's jacket as I sat up, most of the people around me still asleep. Last night, he hadn't been making a very good expression and I hadn't been able to comfort him but this was an immensely touching gesture. I felt so ashamed when I realized that he had slept on the opposite side of the camp. Was he angry with me or was he feeling awkward?
The fire had gone out and I found that the last guard, Kozato Enma, was fast asleep. I snorted. He's lucky no one attacked us while he was sleeping on duty. I took the time to sit by Dino while he slept, draping the jacket over him carefully. I smiled to myself, sleeping in the wild like this didn't suit him. He was much too pretty but it did look like he was quite tired, there was a bit of drool hanging off one side of his mouth.
"Pft." I grinned to myself, noticing the slightest bit of dirt on his cheeks.
He really is cute when he's sleeping. My only problem is that he sleeps a little too heavily for a mafia boss. Compared to others, he wakes less quickly especially when he's comfortable. I always worry that someone will get the jump on him while he's sleeping. I mean, our boss wakes up at the slightest movement and he wakes up in a crabby mood so he'll shoot at whatever disturbed him whether that something is ally or foe. Dino is more likely to get shot and still wake up all smiley like a child.
I reached out and took hold of his hand gently. I waited for a reaction but I didn't get one. He was sleeping much too deeply. There was nothing for me to do so I waited for the group to wake up, taking the time to weigh Dino's hand in mine. His hand is much larger than mine but it's also just that much warmer. The skin on the back of his hand was smooth and soft but his palm was rough and calloused. My fingers stopped against his ring, the sign that he was a fighter. It was a high class Sky Flame ring.
There's only one sky in the world and to me, that sky is you.
The words I had told the boss not too long ago rang in my head over and over. There is only one sky in any world. So what is Dino? Simply put, he's not my sky. I felt like I was on the verge of something but I just couldn't put my finger on it.
Dino's hand tightened around mine and just like that whatever I was coming onto was lost, "Well this is a nice surprise."
"Ohh." I released his hand immediately, turning away to hide my darkening cheeks, "I was just… just… yeah…"
He laughed airily, sitting up to offer me his hand again, "Please?"
I took a quick glance around camp and once I found that everyone was still sleeping, I carefully and slowly put my hand in his, "I-Is this okay?"
"Yeah." He smiled and I felt my heart speed up erratically, "You don't have to do it in secret, you know? I'll never refuse you."
I nodded more to myself than to him, "I-Is… it okay if I… Nevermind."
"Kira, it might be my fault but I want to know why you're so afraid. Have I ever refused you?" He asked, his voice deep with concern, "If I've ever hurt your feelings, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. You don't have to be scared."
I had no response to that. Sure he hasn't refused but what if I enjoy it too much and end up being clingy? What if he hates me afterwards? I don't want that. Not that I could picture him being angry at me for being clingy when all he does is smile at the smallest bit of affection but what if he gets tired of it because I do it all the time?
"If you don't want to tell me, that's fine too." He murmured.
"I can be a little bolder if you can promise me that… you won't get tired of me." I whispered, glancing around to make sure everyone else was still sleeping.
He only stared at me like I was some sort of alien and it scared the crap out of me.
I tugged my hand away and scrambled to my feet, "Anyways, I'll wake Sawada. We should get moving."
Dino's eyes followed me around the camp as I shook people awake here and there starting with Kozato, that dumb kid who fell asleep on watch duty.
"Get up! You dumb herbivore!" I snapped, "You can't fall asleep! You were supposed to be on watch!"
Poor kid was scared out of his wits but at least it woke him right up. I barely managed to get some of these kids awake and I had to be rather rough with some of them but with Dino's help, they were all awake and complaining about their empty stomachs before I knew it.
It wasn't until we started moving that Dino crept up beside me with a dopey grin to whisper, "I promise."
I punched him and continued on my way all embarrassed and whatnot.
This is where the battle reached its peak. I call this the peak but truthfully it was the end. I only say that this was the peak because both Reborn and Jager had joined the fight. It surprised most people and what's stranger is that Colonnello was here in front of us. Kyoya's target had been Colonnello so there was only three possibilities. Kyoya had been defeated, they missed each other completely, or they had been purposely avoiding Kyoya. Either way we were at a severe disadvantage with the full force of the Arcobalenos staring us down.
"We'll go with Kira-san's plan!" Sawada called sharply, "Leave Reborn to me and Enma-kun! Mukuro, Chrome, take care of Mammon! Yamamoto, Gokudera-kun, Shamal, I'll leave Lal to you!"
I met Fon's gaze for just a split second but it was clear that Fon's target was not me. His eyes were sparkling with excitement but his gaze was directed completely at Dino. I was more than offended. Fon had planted a direct blow on my pride. Sure Fon and I are blood related and we've fought plenty of times but that doesn't mean he has to think that Dino is a more exciting opponent. I pulled on my gauntlets, my ring burning with purple flames as I cranked out a plan to punch Fon's brains out, but I was stopped short. Dino's hand fell heavily on mine and I found that the Bucking Horse's eyes were burning with competitive flames as he stared Fon down.
"Won't you leave him to me?" Dino returned Fon's approving nod with a smile, "Until Kyoya gets back to us we need someone to fight against Colonnello too."
"Wha-?!" I was about to snap back at him but I was curtly interrupted.
"Kira-san! I'll leave Jager to you and onii-san!" Sawada ordered, "And I'll let Lambo and I-Pin take care of Colonnello."
"Geh." I was utterly disgusted at the prospect of fighting with Sasagawa Ryohei as my partner but it looked like Dino had already made up his mind. Hey. Who was I to take a fight away from him? I've already fought Fon plenty of times so I guess I can take a step back and let Dino take up the challenge this time around.
Turns out though, Sasagawa was not a bad partner. I was shocked at the way he took the initiative to put himself back to back to me. Considering Jager's short warping powers, back to back was the safest way for us to combat him and it looks like Sasagawa had been smart enough to figure it out. It looks like Sawada thought about our partners before saying anything. Sasagawa and I weren't exactly a bad match.
Between Sasagawa's yelling… I mean, onslaught of punches and my three wildly expanding vicious box weapons, Jager hardly had enough flames to last. He was on the defense faster than we … err… I expected since it looks like Sasagawa doesn't think about anything but punching when he fights. I was pleased with Sasagawa's stamina itself. Punching wildly like that for the duration of the whole fight was a great feat.
Without enough flames to last, Jager was unable to short warp and was eventually forced to enter full on hand to hand combat with both me and Sasagawa. At one point, I realized that Jager's body was decomposing flesh and I almost felt bad since my foot sunk straight into his gut without an ounce of mercy but I let that slide out of my conscience because a moment before that he had punched me in the jaw just as mercilessly. With Jager beaten down, Sasagawa and I were free to keep on fighting. Sasagawa immediately ran to Lambo's aid but I think that was more because he wanted to fight with Colonnello than anything else. I was left with a choice to make. I could either jump in and cripple Fon or… jump in and fight Reborn. That was a no brainer. I went straight for Reborn, my alligator snapping it's jaws immediately in the hitman's face to announce my presence.
"Tch." Reborn turned his gun on me, instantly getting out of the way when my albatross went barreling by, "Cannibal."
The malice in the air was lessening. It's probably because Sasagawa and I defeated Jager and I think Yamamoto's trio managed to bring down Lal Mirch and Mukuro and Chrome took down Mammon. Victory was coming closer and closer or it would be if Reborn wasn't a monster. Kozato Enma was easily shot down now that Reborn was fighting with a sense of urgency.
"Fon! Colonnello!" Reborn called out to his companions.
I ducked out of the way of a bullet as it came speeding by but I should have taken it. Reborn hadn't been aiming for me. The two bullets sunk into Fon and Colonnello respectively.
"Oh!" Fon said in amusement as his foot expanded to over ten times its normal size.
"Tch. It's ten years too early for you to be helping me, kora!" Colonnello heaved his growing rifle over his shoulder nonetheless, "But I'll take care of these guys to pay you back!"
Dino managed to get away somehow but Sasagawa, I-Pin, and Lambo were not so lucky. It wasn't just the rifle that had expanded, it was the explosive ammo inside that had grown. Under the intense explosions of Colonnello's artillery, we had lost three fighters. Mukuro, Yamamoto, Gokudera, and Dr. Shamal moved to take care of Colonnello.
I won't say anything much about our fight itself. You can probably imagine how hard we struggled against the three most powerful Arcobalenos but struggle as we might, they were much too powerful for us to even compete with. We had an extra day of combat that Reborn didn't have. We were exhausted and hungry. I had a taste of despair when my knees hit the floor under Reborn's unlimited power. Sawada followed suit just a minute later.
"Yeah. Your brother had a similar reaction after going one on one with me." Reborn grinned at me and for a split second he looked like Satan himself, "It looks like Hibari needs more work. Or maybe not. You should have seen the look on his face when I told him I already took you down. It didn't suit the aloof Cloud Guardian of the Vongola Family."
I slammed my fist over my knees. They had given out and they wouldn't obey my mind any longer. My ring was burning passionately but what use was it if my legs wouldn't move.
Looking down at my burning ring, Reborn snorted, "You and Hibari are both too easily angered. It's much too easy to read you."
I willed my legs to move but they were completely useless. I wondered for a moment if it was possible that Kyoya and I had felt the same frustration, having been defeated by Reborn. I glared up at the hitman defiantly as he approached me with the eyes of a wolf about to completely tear apart its prey. The dark leather of a whip snapped forward and Reborn couldn't hide the surprise on his face as he backed away to avoid a brutal whipping from a Sky Flame coated weapon.
I was equally shocked and I couldn't hide it any better than the hitman had.
"Dino-san!" Sawada's voice was filled to the brim with hope.
I glanced back to find Fon with a hand over his eye.
"Tch." Dino had followed my gaze back to Fon, "I knew my second blow didn't connect completely."
Fon's only visible eye caught mine and he smiled at me as if he were giving me his blessing. He mouthed, "He's a good man."
I turned away immediately, my face showing the happiness that I couldn't contain. Regardless of how cool I thought Dino was just then, we didn't manage to pull a victory over the Arcobalenos that day but seeing Dino stand in front of me gave me hope. It gave me the strength to stand and fight again and for the first time, we fought as a team. It was the most cliche thing I've ever done. I've never pictured fighting next to Dino but it was kind of fun even though we were losing.
The whole battle was an exchange of secret plans, encouraging smiles, and weaknesses. If he left an opening, I would cover it. Likewise, if I took a misstep, he stepped up in warning. Our exciting battle came to an end, Dino's strength finally gave out and mine held up only a second longer but I couldn't forget the image of Dino's broad shoulders and tense back, standing in front of me like a shield. Most of all, Dino's battle aura was etched into my senses as a permanent memory. It was a side of Dino that I was now enjoying. If you won't tell him, I'll admit that his entire backside is extremely sexy. It's a secret. Shh.
"Reborn~" Dino whined when the hitman plopped down on his back after his victory, "This is embarrassing! Not in front of Kira!"
"What?" The hitman snickered, "I used to do this to you all the time when you were my stumbling, wimpy student."
"You're heavier now." Dino grunted, squirming from side to side tiredly, "Reborn! Get off!"
"If you don't shut up, I'll go over there and sit on Kira." The hitman stretched his legs out, his heels coming to rest on top of Sawada's face, "My useless students. When are you guys going to grow some backbone?"
"Reborn!" The two of them whined and I almost felt jealous for a second there. Sawada had experienced the same things that Dino had experienced and it looks like they both grew strong under the tutelage of the world's greatest hitman. Sawada shared some sort of experience with Dino that I would never have. Despite the slight amounts of envy in my chest, I could see that Sawada resembled Dino a lot in terms of kindness and personality. It was kind of cute.
My attention was drawn to the pale and slender fingers on Fon's hand as he approached me with his hand outstretched as if he was going to help me up, "I was quite worried that you would end up choosing a man with a strong resemblance to your father. When Reborn told me you were with Don Cavallone, I was surprised and quite happy but another set of worries hit me. He's put some of those worries to rest for me with today's fight."
"Tch." I accepted the hand he offered me and pulled myself to my feet, "Don't act cool when you've got blood running down your eye."
"Yes, well…" Fon laughed, wiping away the blood along with some dirt, "When I left him an opening, I didn't think he would take it and run to you. I was honestly expecting a more firm second blow. He was just too eager to protec-!"
I slapped my hand over his mouth, guiding him away from the abused-by-Reborn group, "Shut up. And what happened to Kyoya?"
"Ahh…" Fon smiled at me sheepishly, "Your brother was completely humiliated by Reborn and Colonnello. They tied him to a tree somewhere near the entrance to the amusement park."
"Hey." I grinned suddenly, spotting Dino's whip lying about just a few feet away, "Would you humor me?"
"Hm?" Fon didn't know what was coming.
I grabbed Dino's whip and snapped it around Fon, firmly knotting it around him before Fon could even protest, "Humor me, Fon. Kyoya's going to be so damn cute."
"Wha-? Wha-?" Fon couldn't even finish his damn question. He was too flustered by the tightness of his bindings, "Kira, this is not appropriate!"
"Shut up, old man." I snickered, tugging on the rope harshly enough to knock Fon flat on his back.
"O-Old man?" The former Storm Arcobaleno was clearly sulking, muttering to himself, "She never called me that when she was a child. She used to be so cute."
Dino grinned from underneath Reborn's weight, "Can you tell me more about her childhood?"
"Well, she had a harsh childhood. Kidnappings, facing down her father's enemies, but she was the most adorable little thing." Fon grinned right back and I shuddered. It felt like I was looking at the man who would completely embarrass me in front of my most precious person, "She used to smile all the time, reaching her tiny little hand out towards me and she would say 'Shake hands?' when it was obvious that she just wanted to hold my hand."
"Oh my." Dino's cheeks flushed dreamily as he imagined my embarrassing childhood habits, "So she was dishonest way back then too."
"Dishonest about everything except her love for her family." Fon is my worst enemy, "She would run around holding her father's hand and say the most adorable things. Her father was so disappointed when her brother was born and all the attention that he was receiving was redirected to her precious baby brother. Oh! And Kira would always storm around the house completely naked before her bath screaming about how much she hated cold wat-!"
"Oh shut up." I snapped, stomping firmly on Fon's rearend, "If you say another word I'll wrap this around your throat."
"Oh! Kira, there's someone here that wants to meet you today. If you'd just give us the slightest bit of your time, she would be so very grateful." Fon smiled up at me as if he thought I would say no. I've never seen the man look so nervous, "Of course I've already told her a lot about you and your brother so she knows the basics."
I shrugged, "If you'll humor me until the end, I'll meet this person."
"That's good."
"Now where's Kyoya?" I mumbled to myself.
"I told you. Reborn and Colonnello tied him to a tree." Fon chuckled nervously, "You'll probably have to go and untie him."
"Wrong." I grinned, feeling the malice coming closer and closer, "My brother's not the type to sit still. He's probably managed to get himself out."
As if on cue, Kyoya came storming through the trees with a deadly glare focused on Reborn, "I'll bite you to death."
"Ahem." I cleared my throat, drawing his glare to me. I motioned down to Fon, who was tied up in Dino's whip and clearly beneath my foot, "I win."
"You herbivore!" Kyoya snapped at Fon, "How could you get caught?!"
"Pardon?" Poor Fon was totally confused when Kyoya stomped over and very childishly grabbed his collar to shake him back and forth with enough force to rattle his brains.
"Ahem!" I said loudly, "Come on, Kyoya! Let's hear it!"
Kyoya's expression was full of disgust and humiliation. This was his second humiliation of the day. "K-Kira-nee…"
"Kyaa!" And for the next five minutes, I was full on fangirling over my adorable little brother while Kyoya spend that five minutes trying to murder Fon for being captured. I'm pretty sure people were looking at me funny but really, I was hungry and tired so at least let me be the crazy Kyoya-loving woman I always am.
My joy didn't actually last long though. Fon spilled the beans about our deal and Kyoya was chasing after me like a murderer on a rampage.
"Alright. That's enough, children." Reborn snickered, grasping firmly to Kyoya's arms to prevent a wild attack, "Let's get your wounds looked at and then you're all free to enjoy Mafia Land."
"Seriously?!" Sawada's bunched was extremely excited like the children they were.
"Oh. By the way, there are some people that have come to enjoy the day with you losers." Reborn smirked, "They're waiting for you out at the front of the park."
Those people aka Sasagawa Kyoko and Miura Haru made Sawada's group pretty happy and… not to mention Dino was more than elated to see his subordinates standing around like a welcome party.
"You guys!" Dino was all smiles when he spotted Romario, "You came to see me?!"
"We couldn't leave our young master to stumble around." They laughed, "You didn't cause Kira-san any trouble, did you boss?"
"No way! I never cause her any trouble! What are you talking about?"
I just shook my head at their antics and turned to catch Kyoya sharing an awkward yet cute moment with Kohane as he tried to act much too stoic. She was very hurriedly wiping blood and dirt from my brother's face with a worried expression on her childish face.
Continuing my sweeping glance, I spotted a girl I had never seen before standing with a very smiley Yamamoto. She was an ordinary looking girl. Dark brown hair, medium-long, dark brown eyes, fair skin, big chest, decent height, most-likely a decent weight, and very… well, ordinary! She looked extremely plain next to the good-looking Yamamoto but I supposed that was her charm. He talked about her like she was some sort of goddess so I expected at least a model. I caught Yamamoto's eye only to find that he was beaming at me with pride.
"Senpai!" He called, beckoning me toward her. I complied only to have him throw his arm around my shoulder with a joyous laugh, "Senpai, meet my girlfriend, Suzuki Hina."
I glanced up, one eyes squeezed shut from the way he was roughly messing up my hair, "Suzuki? Any relation to Adelheid?"
"Nope." He shrugged, continuing to mess up my hair as he pleased, "Just a common name!"
"Well, I suppose that's good." I grasped his arm by the wrist, "Cut it out!"
"Oops." He grinned, pulling away, "Sorry, I guess I got a little excited! Ahaha!"
I finally got to take a good look at her but the way she was glaring at me in envy kind of caught me by surprise. I put my hand out awkwardly, "Hibari Kira, I'm… nobody special."
"I know who you are." She said, taking my hand tightly, "Takeshi told me all about you. He really likes you. I never got to thank you for saving his father! He sounded so miserable when he told me about his father getting kidnapped but when he called me to let me know that you had rescued him, he sounded so happy!"
"Ahaha! Did I?" Yamamoto shrugged at me like it was nothing special, "Anyways, let's go on a double date! Right now!"
"Now?" I glanced back at Dino who was cluelessly and very joyfully joking around with his famiglia.
"Yeah! This is an amusement park after all! It'll be fun!"
"Ahhh… I can't." I smiled to myself, tearing my eyes away from the Cavallone Family, "He's going to want to spend time with them. And I'm not good with childish places like this anyways. Enjoy yourselves."
"Ehhh?" Yamamoto was pouting so cutely but I couldn't help it if Dino wanted to have fun with his family, "You didn't even ask him!"
I don't need to ask to know.
"Kira-san." Yamamoto puffed his cheeks out and then he said, "Wait here."
"Takeshi!" Suzuki Hina called sharply to him but he continued on his way towards Dino. She slapped a hand over her face and smiled at me sheepishly, "Sorry about that. He's rather childish at times like this. Anyways, he told me all about you."
"Did he?" I snorted. He probably told her I was a monster.
"He says you're fierce and beautiful." She grinned at me when I stared at her skeptically, "Recently, he called you the 'angel of the battlefield' or something strange like that. Honestly, I love the way he smiles when he talks about you. Secretly, though, I do get kind of jealous. Secret?"
I stared at her outstretched pinky and sighed as I accepted the promise to keep this between us.
"Is there any reason you don't want to go on a double date with us?" She asked, watching her boyfriend explain things to Dino.
"No." I'd actually love it if Dino would leave his family and walk over here to spend the day with me. But I can't compete with them. I wouldn't dare. "It's Dino that would probably refuse."
"Eh? He looks like a nice person." She murmured, "Is he mean to you?"
"No." I'm mean to him. I blinked in surprise when he looked over to me with a smile and a subtle wave of his hand. I waved back silently. He grinned and turned to leave with Romario as expected.
Yamamoto came rushing back to us with a bright smile, "Dino-san said he'll be right back. It looks like they brought him a change of clothes."
"Wh-What?" I couldn't really believe that Dino had agreed so I had to confirm it, "He agreed?"
"Right away." The Rain Guardian assured me, "He said he would change and come right back."
I glanced down at my dirty clothes, blood stains and dirt and green splotches from the grass were decorating my white uniform shirt and Yamamoto was equally dirty, "He's going to change and leave us looking like… this?"
"Ahaha! It doesn't matter! Let's just have fun, senpai!"
"Fun indeed." I grumbled sarcastically as we began our wait for Dino.
I'm sorry guys... I'm such a bad updater! T_T I swear I posted but it didn't go up for some reason... O_O Anyways. I promise this will have an ending! I'll get there someday!
