Chapter 50 It was all just a "Performance"

Washington, D.C.: Hall of Justice: December 22

"She had a panic attack."

Batman crossed his arms over his chest as he listened to Black Canary tell him about her last discussion with Alex. Ever since the mental training exercise Alex and Black Canary will just sit down for Alex to talk to Canary about anything. Sometimes Alex won't say anything, other times Black Canary will just teach Alex some new moves and hope she opens then. The last session did not go well.

"I don't usually share what happens in a session but Bruce, something is wrong, Alex is only going to get worse if something isn't done," said Canary.

"Agreed, but considering what she experienced with the fear toxin, I don't believe two League members gaining up on her is going to help," said Batman. "Even if you have a close connection to her."

"From the flashes, I saw in Alex's mind when she awoke from her nightmare was that it was not only Superman but the Justice League and the entire team that had turned against her," explained Martian Manhunter. "I was not even trying to read her mind, but her fear came out so strong I saw it from the other side of the cave."

"I didn't think it was this serious," admitted Canary.

"We may have reached a one step forward; two step backs when it comes to Alex and the League. I just hope it won't affect her work with the team," said Batman.

Martian Manhunter looked around. "Where is the team anyway?"

Supergirl was crouched down between a chimney and satellite dish on top of a roof. She was staring at the building where they were waiting for the place to be robbed.

"How do we even know that this place is going to be hit by the thieves?" questioned Supergirl.

"They will come here," said Robin.

"How long we will have to wait?" asked Supergirl. "And if Interpol's already on this, then why are we bothering?"

"Because Batman said so. Why, do you have something better to do," snapped Robin.

Supergirl frowned and readjusted her hood. Robin had only spoken to her to say remarks like that or bark orders.

"She does bring up a good point, this could be one of the dozens of places the thieves will hit," said Red Arrow.

"This building holds the same advanced weapon technology that has been stolen from all the other places in Europe," informed Robin. "Interpol already has the other places staked out."

"How do you feel?" asked M'gann.

"Okay, I think I just caught that twenty-four bug that has been going around the circus," said Robin.

Supergirl could not help but think that Batman sending them undercover to Haly's International Traveling Circus was the strangest mission yet, she also couldn't figure how strange it was Robin was so determined to lead the team. In the mission in Qurac, Robin wanted nothing to do with it. Again, a lot has changed since.

Just then Supergirl spotted a figure moving. "Got someone over here climbing the fence."

The figure did a flip and landed perfectly on the other side over the gate.

"Looks like Carlos isn't sick anymore," said Red Arrow.

"So Haly's Circus is behind this," said Artemis.

"Could be him, could be his brother, keep an open mind, and move in," ordered Robin.

Supergirl was about to jump down when she stopped herself. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the box of shields she had brought. She opened it, hesitantly for a second, she rolled up her sleeve and placed a shield on her arm. A shock spun through her system; she felt energized as she jumped down to join the others.

Superman walked through the halls of the cave. His mind going back to the memories he had here, it seemed only yesterday they had set this place up for themselves. Now the kids were using this as their secret base, time flies. He turned when Red Tornado walked up behind him.

"I was not informed you would be visiting us," said Red Tornado.

"I just thought I swing by and see the place again, been quite some time," said Superman. He glanced in the living center. "Where's the team?"

"Aqualad has returned to Aquaman's side for the time being. Zatanna is somewhere in the cave. Kid Flash in Central City. As for the rest, Batman believes they are on an unauthorized mission," explained Red Tornado.

"Batman let them go on a team he did not approve of?" questioned Superman.

"He knows where they are, he just believes in letting them handle it, and they will answer to him when the team returns," informed Red Tornado.

Superman nodded. "I see." Batman was the only one he knew that had a hands-on, hands-off, kind of parenting style. "Um, one more thing Red," he called. "It's about Supergirl. I wanted to ask you something."

Back on the Haly's Circus train, Alex rubbed her face to try and wake herself up. Their attempt to stop the thief at the warehouse did not go over so well, no thanks to Alex. Now she was just felt drained and guilty about how she screwed up. The Shields, they do more than only awaken her powers and give her full control of them, they mess with her emotions. Alex was so filled with rage; it almost reminded her of Match or Superman from the fear toxin.

The door opened to reveal Artemis in disguise as Diane Danger. Alex was also in her disguise as Donna Danger.

"What the hell was that?" asked Artemis.

"What was what?"

"Don't play dumb, back there at the warehouse, you could have gotten all of us killed," said Artemis.

"You think I did it on purpose!" snapped Alex.

"I don't know what to think, but you know that Roy is going to use this as more evidence that you are the mole, he already thinks it's you, M'gann or me," hissed Artemis.

"Why do you care, I thought you weren't talking to me," said Alex.

Artemis turned her back. "Do me a favor, get your head out of your ass." The door slammed shut.

Alex threw the box of Shields against the wall in rage. Could this get any worse? Composing herself, she picked by the box of Shields and walked back into the cart with Artemis, M'gann, Robin, and Roy.

"If the entire circus is involved, Haly himself may be the mastermind," said Roy.

"You don't know that," said Robin.

"It would explain his lies," said Roy.

"I told you to keep an open mind," snapped Robin leaving the cart.

"Hello, Megan! I'll read Haly's mind!" suggest M'gann.

"I'm not sure we can trust you to do that without tipping him off," said Roy.

"Or maybe you don't trust her, period! I heard you talking to Robin at the Cave. You're only here to spy on us, you think one of us is the mole," yelled Alex pointing to Artemis and M'gann.

"There is a good reason to suspect all three of you," defended Roy. "Both Artemis and Miss Martian have already lied before, and Cadmus could have programed you without knowing."

Alex thought to Luthor and got right into Roy's face; she was about to saying something when M'gann stepped in.

"Alex, relax. Don't do anything you'll regret."

Alex let M'gann lead her out of the cart. She heard Artemis talk.

"Each of us would give our lives for this team. So, try and keep an open mind."

"We're not on a mission given by Batman, are we?"

Robin turned to Alex as the train was being loaded up for Geneva. They were standing not that far from the others.

"No," answered Robin.

"Then what's going on?" she asked. "What aren't you telling us?"

"I just need to do this, I can't tell you why and you're just going to have to live with that," said Robin, his expression saying he wasn't going to change his mind.

Alex stared at his blue eyes behind his mask; it was probably the closest she was ever going to see of his actual face. She found the eyes to relax her.

"Okay, if you can't tell me, then you can't," said Alex. "Don't think I don't ever have your back." She took Robin's hands.

"I know you do," said Robin.

"Everyone on the train, now! We are leaving!" yelled Mr. Haly.

Superman pressed the button that would open the door. He walked into the bedroom. The room was simple; the walls were a periwinkle color; the single bed had a white and green comforter with pillows. On the nightstand appeared to be a collection of seashells and rocks with a small white lamp. The desk had a bookbag hanging from the chair as books, papers, and folders piled on the desk. Red sneakers laid on the floor as well as jeans and black sweatshirt just that looked like it just barely made it in the hamper. There were picture frames on the dresser that made Superman walk towards them. He saw several photos of Supergirl with the team. One had her with just the boys, one with her and M'gann, one with Supergirl, Artemis and Zatanna and one with the entire team. There were also photos of her with Captain Marvel, Black Canary, and Red Tornado. Also, one of her with a white wolf and a giant metal ball. She looked happy in the pictures as she smiled and made faces with the rest of her friends. Superman did once again glance around the room. It was a bedroom of a normal teenage girl. A typical simple adolescent girl.

"I am glad to be out of that costume, I will rather be in my own, thank you very much," said Artemis.

"I don't understand how that guy was able to copy my powers so easily," said Supergirl. She sat down next to Robin in the train cart, Artemis, Miss Martian and Red Arrow with them.

"Parasite can copy a person's powers or abilities just by touching them. It drains the person for an amount of time, Parasite also only has the abilities for a short amount of time, which is why he always has to continue stealing more," said Robin. "But Parasite stole a lot more power than you have."

Supergirl rubbed her arm. "He must have tapped into my DNA structure or something."

"I guess that makes sense," said Red Arrow.

"What's the plan now?" asked Miss Martian.

"Now that we know who the thief is, we need to learn of his motive." Robin held up a flash drive. "I managed to swipe this from him."

"How?" asked Red Arrow.

"Don't ask," said Supergirl.

Robin hacked into the drive. "Looks like Parasite has been working for Intergang."

"They've been the ones who have been helping steal weapons from New Genesis, like Sphere," said Supergirl.

"With all the tech he's stolen, it looks like he's planning to build a black hole machine," said Robin.

"Cliché much," said Artemis.

"Oh, come on!" said Red Arrow. "To build that, you need a particle accelerator! Those are not easy to find."

"His next target would be Large Boson Collider," informed Robin. "They have one there."

"Figures."

"Then why don't you and I go and stop him, the rest are still recovering from Parasite," suggested Red Arrow.

"Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly why you want us to stay behind," remarked Supergirl.

Artemis held up her crossbow. "Not all of us have powers."

"I'm ready to go too," Supergirl told Robin.

Miss Martian stood up. "There is no way that I'm being left behind."

Supergirl looked up at the Martian girl. "You sure, you're not still feeling sick?" asked Supergirl concerned.

"Feeling a hundred percent again!"

Robin nodded. "Then we all go."

Geneva: December 24

"Look out!"

Red Arrow and Robin dodge as Parasite used his heat vision on them.

"You just had to give him your powers!" shouted Red Arrow.

"Oh what! You're going to said I did it on purpose to help the enemy as a mole!" shouted Supergirl. She ducked as heat vision was shot her way.

"Save it you two, we need to work together!" yelled Robin.

Artemis shot a foam arrow which covered Parasite face for a second before he ripped it off.

"Alright, Dangers, come on out! Only a couple of minutes before this baby's done warming up and eats Geneva," said Parasite.

"Big risk to take on a theory," said Robin. "Do it. Go!"

Miss Martian stepped out. "What do you have against Geneva, anyway?"

Parasite held out his hand and pulled Miss Martian forward telepathically. Never liked the food, but the menu is improving."

"What is with him and food," snapped Supergirl, peering over behind the wally with Artemis.

"Don't know, reminds me of Wally," joke Artemis.

Miss Martian dodged Parasite hands and kicked his feet from out under him. "Here's the main course!"

Red Arrow shot an arrow that covered Parasite in foam.

"You think foam can hold me? Martian and Kryptonian powers here! I can crush you with a single thought." mocked Parasite. Red Arrow was lifted in arrow and was being crushed in mid-air.

Supergirl jumped over and punched Parasite in the face, causing Red Arrow to drop to the ground, Miss Martain caught him.

Robin ran over to the machine and began hacking. "But do any of those powers free you before I sabotage your death thingy? "

"This one does," said Parasite as heat vision came from his eyes. Supergirl jumped in front of Robin and deflected the beams with her bracelets, they shot back at Parasite as Artemis fired an arrow and flames erupted.

Parasite broke free from his foam prison as the flames surrounded him. "So clever, tricking me into igniting inflammable gas. But you forget about the invulnerability. Fire can't touch me."

"Unless you make a meal on my powers," said Miss Martian. "And get my weaknesses as a side dish!"

"No!" screamed Parasite. He fell to his knees.

"Aw, poor baby Something you ate?" mocked Miss Martian.

Robin turned off the machine and the black hole that was being created above disappeared.

Supergirl watched as Agent King Faraday walked away with Parasite in an inhibitor collar and handcuffs. She turned to Miss Martian when she flew down next to her.

"I didn't think the saying was true."

"What saying?" asked Miss Martain.

"That you are what you eat," answered Supergirl.

Miss Martian chuckled. "There's the Alex I know."

Artemis reached her hand out to help Red Arrow up. It was surprising when he accepted it.

"Wow. He dares to touch the hand of a suspected traitor," teased Artemis.

"Mind open," said Red Arrow. "I guess I never really saw you three in a different light before. Sure, Supergirl's a hot-head."

"Hey!"

"Shush, you're out hothead," joked Robin, placing his hand on her shoulder.

"But I know I'm not one to talk," said Red Arrow. "Any of you could each have betrayed us here; you didn't." He looked to Supergirl, Artemis and Miss Martian. "I'm sorry I doubted any of you. There is no mole."

Supergirl rubbed the back of her head as Miss Martain cheered and called for a group hug, which Red Arrow and Artemis try to run from. Supergirl could never say it out loud, but she had a feeling that Red Arrow was not so far off about the mole theory.

Happy Harbor: Mount Justice: December 24

Alex had stepped off the bio-ship as Miss Martian flew to the kitchen and Robin headed back to Gotham to talk to Batman. That was a conversation Alex felt would not end well. Red Arrow had gone off somewhere too, but Alex didn't see where. Artemis was walking in front of her.

"We made quite a circus act didn't we," said Alex.

Artemis turned to her and smirked. "Yeah, I think you had some of the people believing you were on steroids with the way you were throwing crates, the others just had their mouths open."

"I wanted to be the bearded lady, but Robin said that didn't go with our Daring Dangers act."

"Good thing he said no, that would have been corny."

"Corny! You were shooting arrows at M'gann and Robin, how overused is that trick."

"Screw you! My arrows are kick ass!"

They both started laughing when they stopped Artemis looped her arm through Alex, and they started walking together through the halls.

"I missed you," admitted Alex.

"Me too," said Artemis. "Want to go make snow angels?"

"Can we make a snowman too?"

"Hell yeah. We'll go steal some of Wally's clothes to make the snowman."

Alex laughed.
