Chapter Forty-Five:

Premonitions

SHINICHI POV

Shinichi paced the sidewalk outside of the University Administrative office. He had come to talk to the headmaster in order to confirm proper usage of the auditorium tonight for their planned meet with Vermouth. He had also invited his friend and trusted protector of sorts, FBI agent Jodie Sterling to meet with him. If this truly was a plan to take down the Black Organization once and for all, Jodie's knowledge and resources would be irreplaceable. And, should this all turn out to be a trap for him and his friends, he wanted her at his back, watching with plenty of firearms at her disposal.

"You are going to burn a hole in the ground with all that pacing", stated Kaito, amusement could be noticeably seen in his eyes, but he also noted the silent tapping of his fingers against his knee. The thief was clearly just as nervous about the meeting as Shinichi himself was.

Sighing, he took a seat beside his friend and closed his eyes, enjoying the sun beating down on him. After last night, he didn't mind silence like this. He and Kaito had gone over several more tests to help him control his abilities and he didn't mind admitting he was exhausted.

"Shinichi-kun?" asked a voice.

He looked up to see the lady herself standing there, dressed in her usual black suit and sunglasses. Very FBI looking, he thought to himself as he greeted her warmly, shaking her hand with a smile.

"Jodie-san, good to see you", he stated.

She glanced suspiciously at Kaito who was watching the reunion with a blank look. Obviously they both had no idea who each other were.

"Jodie-san, this is Kaito, a friend of mine. Kaito, this is Jodie Sterling, a member of the FBI."

"Pleasure", she said with a nod to him.

Kaito just smiled back. Shinichi noticed he was staring at the agent rather intensely.

"Something wrong?" he whispered.

Kaito met the agent's eyes for a moment before shaking his head.

"Nothing", he stated as he stood up and stretched.

"Kuroba! Kudo!" yelled the voice of Heiji Hattori who came running up the path. Hakuba walking slowly behind him merely sighed as he sped up a bit.

"Thanks for picking him up Hakuba-kun", Shinichi said with a sympathetic grin, he knew how annoying Hattori could be sometimes. The guy could literally talk someone to death, of this Shinichi was certain.

"Well let's go see the headmaster. I wanted to meet him when all of you were here."

The four boys and the one FBI agent entered the office, but Kaito turned back before the door closed and looked around outside.

Someone was watching.

KID POV

Kaito hung back by the door as Shinichi and Hakuba shook hands with the University's headmaster. The man was rather pudgy around the middle with balding hair and thick framed round glasses sitting over a large nose. If the thief wasn't so busy concentrating on the faint aura he could feel near them, he would have laughed out loud at the man's appearance.

"Something wrong?" whispered Jodie Sterling who was watching the boy with interest.

Since the moment she met the teenager, he acted like he knew more than he let on about things. Even now, he looked to be listening to something.

He stared at her a moment, but shook his head.

"Nothing", he whispered.

"I see", she replied as she stepped closer to the detectives to better hear what was being said; she knew she wouldn't get the truth out of him, because he didn't trust her.

Hattori noticed Kaito's look of pure focus on whatever it was he was doing. Curious, he scooted closer to the other teen. Kuroba noticed the inquisitive look and sighed.

"I feel something", he whispered, "someone watching."

Hattori nodded as Kaito closed his eyes and reached out towards the person. He nearly gasped when the sight of a burning building filled his vision. Black dots swam before his eyes as he pulled out of the soul's vision and found Hattori gripping his arm, concern written plainly on his features. None of the others seemed to of noticed the Magician's sudden sway.

"I reached out for him. All I could see was fire though. I don't know what that means. It was a different feeling from my usual attempts to reach out. I was fully conscious and in control of this one."

"Just be careful. Last thing we need is you getting stuck in a vision in front of two strangers", Hattori whispered as he eyed the FBI agent and the headmaster.

Kaito nodded as he calmed his breathing down and reached out one more time. He knew he could do it, he just…

His thoughts were ripped away when he found himself standing on a stage, shadows dancing around him as flames shot high into the air. He could hear crying and was surprised when he saw himself standing there, tears running down his face. Ranmaru was behind him, holding him back as his hands reached out in an attempt to get to whatever it was the younger Kaito wanted. He turned to look at the flames and nearly fell back in surprise when he came face to face with a dark figure. The man's facial features were unrecognizable, but the aura was dangerous, deadly. He backed up as the man stepped closer to him. He nearly tripped when he stumbled over something below him. Glancing down, he jumped when he saw the corpse of his father, his eyes staring up at him.

"Y-you…murderer", his father whispered.

Kaito scrunched his eyes in confusion until he turned back to the black figure behind him and was once again shocked when the face was revealed. He watched in horror as Snake drove a knife past Kaito and down into the man on the stage floor.

"No!" he shouted, but he could do nothing to stop it.

"Now", said Snake as he turned, still on his hands and knees, "Your turn…Kid the second."

Kaito panicked as he backed up, the killer stalking closer to him. Whimpers escaped his mouth as he closed his eyes; the blade drawing closer to his throat, going for the kill.

"Kaito!" a young female voice screamed out.

Gasping, he opened his eyes and whipped his head to face the one yelling his name. He was stunned when he saw Aoko standing there, tears running down her face.

"Aoko?!" he yelled out to her, attempting to take a step.

He found his body unresponsive. Confused, he looked down and was shocked to find himself chained in his current position. Aoko was just out of his reach as he cried out for her. She also reached for him, but before her hand could find his, he watched in horror as Snake killed her in front of him, a bloody knife stabbing her through the chest.

"AOKO!"

Kaito's eyes snapped open and he found himself panting, Hattori bracing him against the wall in what he guessed was the outside hallway.

"Dude, are you alright?" Heiji asked worriedly when he noticed Kaito was awake again.

"Y-yeah", he said, his eyes wide as he tried to remember how to make his lungs work, "just…a nightmare."

Hattori didn't say anything else, but he slid down to the ground beside him as they waited for the meeting within to finish. In the meantime, Kaito was doing some serious thinking about the vision he had just had. Was it partially true or was it honestly just a nightmare? Surely Snake was dead…right? I mean he had seen the body of the assassin himself, it was burnt a black charcoal color. Then again… If he and Hakuba had gained abilities from the explosion, did it change him too?

These thoughts circulated through his head as office door opened. Shinichi, Hakuba, Sterling, and the headmaster all stepped out.

"Thanks again for your help Sir", Shinichi said with a final handshake.

"Not a problem, I will do whatever I can to assist the police and FBI in a case. Good luck."

"Thank you", Hakuba replied as the headmaster went back into his office, the door shutting firmly behind him.

Shinichi and Hakuba tuned to Hattori and Kuroba and all were silent, deep in thought before one of them finally spoke up.

"So…." Started Hattori, "everything settled?"

"Quite", nodded Hakuba, "We have free use of the auditorium tonight at ten. That gives us five hours before the planned meeting time.

"Well I don't know about you, but I am starving. How about we get some food?" suggested Heiji as he stood up and stretched.

He turned to Kaito and helped the thief up before stepping beside Shinichi who had already begun walking in the direction of a well-known café. Sterling followed behind them, but Hakuba hung back as he turned to his friend who was looking rather pale.

"What happened in there? Last I looked you were leaning against the wall resting and then next thing I know, Hattori is dragging you out into the hallway."

"There is someone watching us, Hakuba", he whispered.

"You think it could be Vermouth?"

"Maybe, I don't know. I tried reaching out into the person's soul but then…"

"Then?"

"I got a strange vision. It was from when my dad died but other things were there that didn't happen that night. Snake was there with a knife and he stabbed my father and Aoko also was there yelling out to me. I know it may have just been random nonsense, but I don't know. Hakuba…what if Snake didn't die in that fire?"

Hakuba paused mid step and turned to Kaito, his eyes showing the surprise he masked rather well, though he couldn't hide the concern that followed.

"You think he could have?"

"It would make sense. Why we feel like someone is following all the time and why we always get flashes of murder and fire. If it was him, I am guessing like how the explosion changed us, perhaps it did the same thing concerning Snake."

"But you said you saw his body, right?"

"I thought it was him, I mean I could have sworn we were the only three in that room, but what if we weren't? What if someone else had been there, perhaps knocked unconscious when the room exploded? He hadn't been that far from where I had been standing."

"I suppose that could have happened, but if it is snake, why is he only watching?"

"I don't know and that's what worries me. Snake or not, whoever it is isn't here for fun and games, but at the moment they have yet to make their move."

The two teens were silent as they walked up the street behind the others, both deep in thought about what this could mean for them if Snake truly was alive. It heightened the risk of their mission by almost triple because the man would be clearly after Kaito and Hakuba for Revenge purposes, whereas they originally thought Shinichi was the only one being targeted.

"If they really are watching, we don't have the privilege to change characters like Kudo did. They will know whether or not we change our looks."

"Yeah", agreed Kaito, "For now I suppose we should focus on this meeting with Vermouth, but when it is done, we need to have a serious talk with the others. Things are going to be getting much more hectic before they get better."

SHINICHI POV

Kaito grabbed ahold of Hakuba's wrist and stared at his watch as he huffed in irritation. Still five minutes before ten. The suspense was beginning to get to him and he just wanted the meeting to be done and over with. He still felt like someone was watching, but it wasn't as strong in the auditorium as it had been within the college. Whoever it was obviously hadn't come inside, but that didn't mean anything. Sometimes the enemy being outside was more nerve-wracking than them being with you in the same room.

The sound of a side door opening had everyone turning as a man with dark hair and a young face walked in. He wore a long brown coat and had a suit beneath it as he carried a briefcase in his hand. He stopped when he was several feet from the group.

"Vermouth", greeted Shinichi.

The man smiled.

"Cool guy", she laughed, "long time no see."

She placed the briefcase on the stage before sliding it to them. Shinichi reached out and grabbed it as the man turned and began walking away.

"That is the information you will need. Wait for my word before you ever try to move. I am…anticipating something at the moment. When that occurs, only then will you be able to move in much more freely than you currently would be able to."

"Why are you helping us?" asked Kudo, his eyes narrowing.

"I want my freedom, cool guy and the boss and his pals are in the way of that. I have plans of my own and me helping you…well, that merely is to my own benefit. Au Revoir."

She continued right out the door as they turned apprehensively to the briefcase which the FBI agent Jodie Sterling was now working hard to open, though carefully in case of traps. Not finding anything that seemed suspicious, she flipped the lid up and looked at the contents in confusion.

"What exactly is it?" she asked.

Shinichi reached in and pulled out several cream colored folders with blank papers inside. He also noticed a watch that seemed to be broken, its date and time set to a specific setting, unmoving.

"Is that when she wants to meet again?" asked Hattori.

"Probably", agreed Shinichi, "she…"

He stopped when a large, loud blast from outside cut him off. The others looked around in confusion as the ground shook around them. Another explosion soon followed as they raced towards the doors.

"Was that an explosion?" asked Heiji as they slowed to a stop.

"I don't know, it sounds like it", agreed Shinichi.

Sterling grabbed the first door but jerked back when the thing burned her.

"It's hot", she muttered in surprise.

"Fire", whispered Kaito, his eyes widening.

"What was that?" asked Jodie.

"There is a fire in the front of the auditorium past the closed doors. Someone purposefully set it, as well as the explosions we have been hearing. We need to get out. Now."

"How can you know that?" she implored, but she was cut off when Kaito collapsed to his knees, his eyes clenched closed as he held his head in pain, his teeth grinding. Hakuba who was beside him had also been searching the thoughts of anyone near the auditorium when he came across a darkness, so unlike the norm. When he attempted to establish a connection, he found himself also falling to his knees as the two boys began to be overwhelmed by the mind's eye they had been sucked into.

"Kuroba! Hakuba!" the teens yelled out as they dropped beside them, trying to see what was wrong, "Can you hear us?!"

Kaito's eyes opened but they were glazed, looking into a space beyond them.

"Vision again?" asked Heiji.

Shinichi nodded as he peered anxiously at the dark haired teen. Hattori turned to Hakuba who was sucking in breaths by the dozen as he also held his head, his eyes still closed.

"Hakuba?" asked Hattori placing a hand on the blonde's arm.

He was shocked when his hand went through the teen, though he could clearly still see him. Hiding this from Sterling who was watching in concern and curiosity, he merely chuckled nervously.

"They…uh, have a fear of fire", he said after a moment.

Jodie obviously didn't believe that excuse but Shinichi was grateful she hadn't questioned them deeper about it.

"We need to get out of here", she whispered when she noticed the smoke drifting beneath the doors. It wouldn't be long before the smoke reached them.

"I got Kuroba", said Shinichi as he lifted the teen into his arms. The boy remained unmoving, trance like as he stared endlessly at nothing. Kudo was concerned he as stuck in the trance, but he knew he couldn't do anything to help him now. They had other concerns to consider first, such as a fire quickly making its way towards them.

Hattori grabbed for Hakuba again and was relieved when he found he could touch him, but when the blonde struggled in his arms, he had to quickly gather the shaking teen to him. Sterling stepped in and helped him as they began carrying them towards the back of the auditorium where an exit was located. A groaning noise could be heard throughout the building and Shinichi and Heiji both looked up in surprise when the ceiling began to fall in.

"What the heck is going on…?" Hattori got out, but that was all Shinichi could hear before the entire ceiling came down, dust and debris encircling them. With two different exits on either side of the auditorum, Sterling, Hattori, and Hakuba set out for the one closest to them as Shinichi half dragged and half carried Kaito with him towards the other. The falling ceiling made it hard to breathe and see, but Shinichi did what he could to dodge debris.

A deep groaning drew the detective's attention and his eyes widened just as a large piece of the roof's metal foundation came crashing down, stretching nearly ten feet long and had a width of about four feet. Kudo grabbed the thief and jumped to the side as it landed right where they had been standing. His head struck something hard that he couldn't see in the dust storm that surrounded them and he knew no more.

From outside the auditorium, a man smiled as he watched the building come down with the group still inside. How he wish he could have seen their demise personally. With an evil chuckle that would make some of the greatest of villains cringe in fear, he walked off the roof and away from the glorious scene of destruction he had caused.

It was time to celebrate.
