Chapter 54: Be our guest

Grace POV

Steve was right. My "girl talk" with Jane was a huge help calming me down but it still left me in complete mystery as to handle Loki's lie. In her opinion, she said I should just move on. But I couldn't. Humans go on and on about finding "the one" which used to confuse me as I had no idea what one thing they were referencing. I now know that it is talking about that one person you know and you cannot go on through life without them by your side and holding your hand no matter what. A soul mate. As cheesy as it was, Loki was mine. My one person, my partner through life. But I would have to live with it being unrequited, so I thought.

I made a, sort of, new year's resolution (considering it was mid September) to avoid Loki at all costs, at least for a couple of weeks. It was just to let the awkwardness evaporate. Like that plan was ever going to work.

Loki POV

After three days of seeing less than a hair of Grace, I knew something was up. She has never been this unnoticed before, especially by me. I felt unbelievably guilty over what I did to her. I loved her but I couldn't tell her in case it brought more distress. I always hated when my head and my heart were at war because when I chose my head over my heart, my heart has a way of making my head know I have gone against instinct. I snorted at the word. Instinct was Thor's territory, solving problems rationally and using my brain was mine. But this time was more annoying than all the previous cases put together. I loved her and I couldn't tell her. I couldn't do anything about it.

With Grace's absence flooding my mind, I wandered around Stark Tower aimlessly walking around until I walked towards a door in a corridor I had never been in or remembered being in. I quickly glanced around. The modern feel and memorable appearance of Tony Stark's style alerted me that I was still in Stark tower.

I reached the strange door and cautiously opened it. Inside was a small room containing a couple of comfortable, chocolate brown sofas, a proper hearth containing a raging fire, a tall standing lamp with a creme lampshade, a beige carpet and a peaceful Grace completely absorbed in a book.

I smiled to myself at the familiarity of the scene and walked into the warm room. She looked up as I closed the white door behind me as quietly as I could.

"What are you doing here?" she asked coldly before turning back to face the warm, glowing hearth, her book completely forgotten. I walked slowly towards her and sat down beside her. I felt cold tension off her as though it radiated off her skin. Guilt swept through me as I tried to come up with a semi-intelligent sentence to break the silence.

"Grace...I..." I tried to talk and failed.

"Please don't," she whispered softly. I barely heard her and turned my head to see one small crystalline tear trickling down her cheek.

I tried to resist from wiping away that one tear that was ripping my insides to shreds. I failed and my left palm made contact with her soft cheek. I had managed to wipe the one tear with my thumb before she sharply pulled away with a quick intake of breath. She hated me. Again. I slowly set my hand back on my lap in shame and hurt before looking back at her.

"What have I done to you that has made you so cold again?" I asked, borderline begging.

"You mean to tell me that you don't know?" she said bitterly. She turned her head to face me. Her face oozed pain and hurt. Was I really the cause of this?

"Excuse me Agent Holmes and brother of Thor but there is a guest here and Mr Stark requests your presence," JARVIS interrupted. That AI had the worst timing ever. This was just the excuse Grace needed.

"Thank you JARVIS, we'll be right there,"Grace said abruptly before getting up and leaving without so much as another word. I sighed and went straight out after her. I wonder what sort of guest it was that dragged Grace and I away, not that Grace wanted to spend another moment in my presence.

I walked up the remaining flights of stairs to the common lounge were everyone was congregated. Thor's Jane was there and even though she had been there around three days, we were both determined to avoid each other full stop. She shot a daggered look at me which sent my mind spinning into confusion. I continued to walk forward where Thor had the biggest, most goofy grin plastered on his face. He moved out of the way to reveal the special guest. I gasped.

"Mother?"
