This Is Us, The Original Family
Chapter Thirty- Seven: Blood Visions
From the grimore of Kostya Dmitri Petrov, 1480
My Katerina will be a special girl. She is only six now but Ona and I know our eldest daughter; she is special. She will bring our people back from the brink. Katerina will not only be a powerful witch once her nineteenth year arrives but she is a doppelganger: the prophesized chosen one. She will be able to breath the magic of our godly ancestors into bloodlines that have lost the link, or children of pure lines that do not receive magic like my little Natalia or my brother. My grandson, Katerina's little boy will be have similar gifts as his mother, it is said that he will have two sisters as well who will not be born with magic but he will breathe magic into their spirits. I'm overjoyed at this prophecy. These are difficult times we live in, especially for our breed of witches; I was worried that our people will go extinct.
But Ona and I have put our magic together and shared in a blood vision of what is to come: We saw Katerina as a powerful witch, she had to be powerful as she did not look old enough to have fully grown children, but the vision showed us otherwise. She was laughing and in the arms of a man who did not look like he was from our area, he looked more English than Bulgarian. They were both watching my daughters' grown son and daughter both with Katerina's eyes and smile. The young woman looked like drawings of my Mama when she was younger and the male was nearly a copy of his father. They were holding down a third child, this one younger looking, blonde and female who was yelling and laughing. "Papa! Mama! Make them stop tickling me!" "Perhaps we should stop this before it goes further…" Katerina's husband said. Katerina grinned and yelled to her children "Elya! Nadia! Leave Cara alone darlings…wouldn't your father make a better target?" She had said and the vision ended.
Power matters. Bringing our people back matters. But to me what matters most is that my little girl gets the family and the happy ending that my wife and I saw.
From the grimore of Kostya Dmitri Petrov, 1490
All hope for our race is lost. All hope for my family is lost. All hope of my Katerina's happiness has been lost.
Some demon of a man raped my daughter. I killed the man as soon as Katerina told us what had happened, set him aflame with my magic but the damage had been done. He had not only raped her but also impregnated her with his spawn. He ruined my baby girl's bright future.
She had a female child born from a rapist. The child would not be a Traveller like us, magic as strong as ours cannot be borne from such an unspeakable act. And she is my firstborn grandchild; magic is only born of the firstborn in our line. This meant that if Katerina ever had any more children, they would not be magical, baring some extraordinary measure such as her being resurrected.
Now because of this evil man, my daughter will not have the future Ona and I saw for her. She cannot have her husband, she will never give birth to Elya, Nadia or Cara. She may still fulfill her future as the savior of our people, but how can she? I cannot expect such a thing of her now, not now that this has happened.
I didn't know what else to do. I had to protect what was left of my daughter's spirit. I could not let her raise the demon's child, no matter how much she wanted to keep the girl. The child may grow up to resemble the man I couldn't run the risk of Katerina having a daily reminder of him. So I gave her to a group of Romani, they would take care of her. And then so Katerina would not have to think of all the pain she had went through I sent her to England.
Perhaps there she could move on from this and find a bit of happiness. Ona and I keep trying for another vision of her but we see the same one we received when she was six. It was once heartwarming to see now it just breaks out hearts to see what will never be.
I know Katerina thinks we hate her because we sent her and her baby away, but we just want her to be happy again. I have not seen my daughter smile truly since the demon-man took her against her will. I wish for her to move on enough to smile again.
Katerina Petrova Mikaelson; Mikaelson Compound; New Orleans, Louisiana; September 9, 2011
Katerina sighed as she entered the gates of her home after a long day of training with a bunch of insufferable witches. Oh, wait she was a witch herself she had to be kind to her fellow witches. But they were absolutely annoying, these French Quarter witches.
No one seemed to understand that she instinctively knew how to use her magic, in all the forms she was capable of (traditional, elemental and Traveller-specific abilities). They kept saying she was wrong; that there was no way her ancestors could transfer their knowledge of magic to her when they resurrected her. They said that's not how magic worked. Even the witches in her own family were doubtful at her insistence that she knew what to do. It was irritating.
She knew what she could do, what she would one day be capable of, she knew how to control it as well, but she had just risen from the dead, she needed some more time before she could prove it to them. She understood that her family was trying to not get her hopes up about her abilities and that all the witches that were trying to help her had never met a true Traveller witch before. She needed rest and then she needed to practice her magic and when she began practicing they would she was correct.
Really they had no business saying it was impossible to transfer magical knowledge. They did not know everything. They knew not what her bloodline was capable of, and they did not know how much more powerful she was than her ancestors because of her doppelganger blood. They couldn't read the grimores of the extinct Traveller bloodlines, only she could. These readings confirmed that what she said was true.
A Traveller's had the abilities of other witches but had a special affinity for blood and spirit magic. Nadia, wanting to know her ancestry, had spent the centuries hording every book and grimore that her parents once had in their home; she could not read the contents of the books but she could read the names of the previous owners. From these grimores she learned more about the whys of her magic. Her father's bloodline was one of the best at blood magic, so it made sense that he married her mother because her bloodline had the strongest affinity for spirit magic; her parents did not marry for love, they married so their eldest child would be the most powerful Traveller of their time. Her father's diary had spoken of the hope he had that his Katerina would be the one to bring their breed of witches back from the brink of extinction, as there were so few families left with undiluted Traveller magic. That his girl had been prophesized to lead a long life and was fated to have the ability revitalize the magic in Traveller families whose abilities had been lost to magical dilution.
It had been sad for Katerina to read her father's writings. Knowing that all he wanted was her to be happy and protect her, that he was willing to send her away and let her shirk her destiny just so she could move past what happened to her and what he thought was a lost future. But the future her Mama and Papa had seen for her was very much still happening. They just misunderstood how long it would take; they didn't realize that her path involved becoming a vampire and then being resurrected by her ancestors. They didn't understand that the child she gave birth to in 1490 was in the vision they had seen, and that their prophesized powerful grandson was in fact her youngest child, not her eldest. It was nice to know that one day her and Elijah would have a son. Katerina sighed. She had spent centuries hating her father, but he was just a slave to what was Destined, just like everyone else.
She began walking up the stairs when she saw it. Blood.
She hated not being a vampire anymore, she couldn't smell it, and she had to trust her eyes more than her nose and ears because they were limited as a witch.
Luckily enough she could find out whose blood it was and what happened. She kneeled down knelt to the puddle and pulled out a blade slicing her palm.
"What the hell are you doing?" Bonnie said, having arrived back from parking the car. "And where did you get that knife."
"Using blood magic to figure out what happened." Katerina responded, while taking a sample of the blood on the ground and rubbing it into her wound. "And everyone should carry a knife if they don't have fangs."
"Kat. Nobody knows how to do blood magic anymore… I know you think you know what you are doing but this is dangerous. Every witch who has tried this type of stuff in the last 500 years has lost either their minds or their life."
Katerina rolled her eyes. "Maybe after this is done you all will finally believe what I have been saying. Now shush, I need to concentrate." She said taking a deep breath, Traveller spells were simple in that they were only a few words, but you had to put intent behind them and many of them had to be said in an ancient tongue, preferably ancient Greek. "…. Show me." She said in ancient Greek, and then chanted in her native language twice more, putting her feelings of worry over her family's safety behind the words.
Earlier That Day…
They had gone to visit the old mansion. Hayley had missed the open air and spacious grounds, and Caroline followed feeling more comfortable keeping her friend company. Caroline and Hayley were both very determined, and Caroline knew if Hayley wanted to get away from the city, she would with or without company.
They hadn't been there since the night they were ambushed, and Caroline did not like being back. The last time she was running through these fields, she was running toward her newfound adoptive family, hopping to save them. Now she was running after a she wolf who wanted to play hide and seek.
"Hayley, you're going to be a mother soon. You might consider acting like an adult."
Hayley glared at her while she undressed. "Kat and I used to goof off in the fields all the time when we lived here and she is a mom, your mom in fact." Her face turned to a grin. "You are starting to sound like a frightening mix of your girlfriend and your Papa. Part snob that refuses to get her hands dirty and part stick in the mud."
Caroline knew Hayley was trying to rile her up, just so she would play her juvenile game, but it worked. So Caroline sighed and gave Hayley her best unimpressed look, a look that made Hayley believe for a second that Care was Kat's biological kid. "So am I counting to ten, since we have supernatural speed?"
"Count to five. Close your eyes." Hayley said before shifting into wolf form and running away.
"Five." Hearing the sound of paws running away added to the sounds of outdoors.
"Four." A new sound joined the fray, human form and walking toward her. Had Sage or Nadia followed them? Perhaps they could chase Hayley around the plantation, maybe it was Mama and she had the foresight to bring a tennis ball.
"Three." She decided that anyone from her family would have announced themselves by now. The person approaching had not. She smelled for who it could be.
Male. Wolf. Vampire.
No.
"Hayley get help!" She yelled opening her eyes and turning around, prepared to fight.
"Hello Caroline."
"Tyler." Caroline said with tears in her eyes.
Hayley heard Caroline's scream, and shifted back, making her way back towards where she left Caroline, careful to stay downwind.
"How you have changed. Going from being the whore of Mystic Falls to being Klaus' whore. No matter where you go, it seems you're only useful for one thing."
"Why are you here Tyler?"
"Is this why you broke up with me? So you could come here and fuck Klaus? He ruined my life Caroline!" He said. Hayley now could see them. They were circling each other. "I'll forgive you if you help me. You help me destroy him, his horrible siblings and anyone they love, I'll take you back."
"This vendetta of yours needs to stop Ty. I care about these people. I even found love. I'm dating Rebekah, Kat is a great vampire-Mom to me, and Elijah is like a father to me. These people are my new family. I will not let you hurt them."
Tyler laughed. "You're a dyke now? Same old Caroline, so shallow and useless she'll sleep with anyone who shows her a morsel of affection. These people do not love you. They are using you, and you're to stupid to see it."
Hayley couldn't let this continue. Tyler's words, while completely untrue, had made Caroline begin to cry and it seemed they were getting to her lingering insecurities.
So she rushed him and pinned him to the ground. Caroline was soon at her side.
"You ok Care?"
"Yep." She said wiping her eyes. "I'm fine."
"Hayley? What are you doing here? And why are you naked and pregnant?" Tyler said struggling to get out of her hold. "I'm a hybrid! No one is stronger than me!" He said anger turning to rage.
"And you are wrong, because we are both much stronger than you are." Hayley said with a manic glint in her eye. "How to punish you for threatening my family and for all those vile things you said about my sweet sister-in-law Caroline?"
"Let go of me you bitch!" Tyler screamed.
Hayley ignored him and turned to look at Caroline, whose eyes were still watering. "Care, would you be so kind to hold him down for me?"
A half hour later they both had yet to say a word, as they walked into their home and made their way to sit on the steps. They were both covered in blood, but Hayley had been able to put on her nearly clean clothes over her blood-covered body.
"You do realize that we walked quite a ways through the quarter, covered in blood and no one said a word. Like this is a normal sight?" Caroline said.
Hayley snorted, and began to laugh hysterically. Caroline soon followed. The situation had been equally parts emotional and absurd there was nothing to do but laugh.
Katerina Petrova Mikaelson; Mikaelson Compound; New Orleans, Louisiana; September 9, 2011
When Katerina came to, her phone was ringing. Bonnie had a surprised look on her face. "Oh please, Bonnie. Do save your apologies about doubting me, I understand you and everyone else's reluctance to believe me." She said whipping her bleeding hand with a handkerchief from her purse. Watching as the cut healed, a perk of the Immortality spell Aaron placed on her.
Once healed, Katerina grabbed her phone from her purse. "Hello my love."
"Katerina, have you heard…"
"Better I saw. The beast still lives. And by the vile things he said to our child alone he should die, but he is also determined to eradicate our family. He must be put down. I would do it myself but I feel Cara needs me at the moment."
"Rebekah saw it as it was happening. Did you do give yourself a blood vision like the ones your father's journals spoke of?"
"Yes. You're the only one that never doubted me Elijah."
"I never will doubt you love. Take care of our girls. My siblings and I are planning on a hunting party for the Lockwood boy when we land. Niklaus, Rebekah and are fighting about who gets to end the wretch for good."
"Happy hunting." She said. "Will you be back this evening? Or tomorrow?"
"Rebeckah estimates that we will be home later this evening, the hunt will not be a long one." Elijah said. "I shall see you soon. Goodbye."
"Goodbye." She said hanging up the phone.
"What happened?" Bonnie asked.
"The Lockwood boy tried to ambush Caroline and Hayley. Would you mind terribly checking on Hayley and the baby? I have a child to comfort. The beast played on her insecurities of not being loved. I fear I have much emotional damage to undo."
Bonnie nodded. "You know Kat, I like having another badass witch around." She said smiling while they went up the stairs.
