We find everyone else in the training room, where they are all working intently in small groups with Rat, Tris, and Uriah. They seem pretty grateful to have an excuse for a break, though, and we all file across the hall to the front room, which has some ancient furniture in it. Vermin have eaten through it in places and it smells of mildew, but it is better than nothing, at any rate.

Glory makes a beeline for Inez. "How is Jose?" she asks, in her breathy, little girl voice.

"Not so good," Inez admits. "But he's a tough guy - he'll make it."

Glory nods, and turns to me. "And Jeb?" she asks hopefully.

"Cara says he was really lucky - they didn't hit anything major. He's just going to need some time to recover."

Glory nods again. "He didn't even have a chance to defend himself," she says, her face hardening with anger. "They stabbed him from behind. He's just a kid."

"Did you get a look at them?" I ask her.

She shakes her head. "No, it all happened so quickly, and it was pretty dark where we were. After Rat knocked them both down, we got out of there as fast as we could."

"So there were two of them, then. Did Rat kill them both?" Inez asks.

"Yes," he answers from across the room.

"How can you be so sure, if it was dark and you ran away?" I ask skeptically.

Rat looks at me with a faint smile on his face. "I'm sure," he says simply.

I decide to let it pass and talk to him about it later.
Cara and Fernando walk in at that point, and I stand up in front of the room.

"Okay, well, we have some things to talk about. First of all, we obviously have enemies, and they want us dead. We all need to be very careful about where we go and what we do. No one should leave this compound alone, and we should discuss setting up a regular watch in the tower."

"I can put a camera up there," Fernando says.

"Do we have a camera?" I ask him.

"No," he admits, "but I know where we can get one."

I nod. "Add it to Cara's list. So that's one of the things we need to talk about: we have at least three missions to run right now, and we're going to need volunteers. First, we need a couple of people to make a supply run - for medicine, a camera, and some other equipment."

"I'll go," Cara offers.

"I don't think that's a very good idea," I say, frowning at her. "Whoever is trying to wipe us out has you at the top of the list. I think it's too dangerous for you to make the run."

"We're all at risk," Cara says nonchalantly. "And I'm the only one who knows what the medicine looks like and where to find it. I also want to recruit a couple of Erudite Divergent who have some skills we need."

Everyone looks at her in surprise.

"What Erudite Divergent?" Maria, one of the Candors asks suspiciously.

"Tell them, Fernando," Cara encourages him.

"Ah, yes. Well, when I went into Linus's database, I was looking for information on where there might be other Divergent. It turns out that Linus has been cataloguing and systematically hiding Erudite Divergent for at least a decade."

"But why didn't he just tell us that?" Tris sputters.

"He promised them he would protect their identities," Cara says softly. "But he's gone now, so he's not breaking any promises if we contact some of these people."

"But you'll be putting their lives at risk - it's not safe," Glory protests.

"Were we safe when the Erudite came and tagged us like animals for slaughter?" Elsa asks, a jarringly harsh question for so young a girl.

"Fair enough," Glory allows after a shocked pause.

"I'll go with Cara," Rat says. "And we can work on disguising ourselves."

I agree, but very uneasily. I still don't think it's a good idea.

"Then we need a couple of people to go to Amity and talk to Christopher about setting up a drop site for messages and possibly supplies. You should all know before you volunteer, however, that Linus expressed suspicions that the Amity have some kind of information about the city perimeter that they don't share."

"He also said that he thinks someone infiltrated the project from the outside world," Tris adds, "and I have a gut feeling the two things are linked. I think our intruder is in Amity."

"That seems improbable," I comment. "I mean, Amity? Really?"

Tris shrugs. "Hiding in plain sight, maybe." Her words are mild, but she's giving me a sharp look, and I realize I was a little harsh and a little quick to disagree with her.

"Maybe so," I allow, and I see the corners of her lips curl up ever so slightly.

"We're also going to need some more food from Amity, but we want to be careful there, too. We know they spike the food with peace serum sometimes, and we don't want our food to be contaminated."

"I'll go," Glory says with determination.

"Me, too," Uriah offers.

"Martin?" Glory says, turning to him. "I suspect we could use another pair of strong hands."

"Sure," he agrees, without hesitation.

"Okay, that's great," I say with genuine relief at how willing people are to take on potentially life-threatening missions. "And last but not least, Tris and I are going to go to the perimeter to scope it out."

Inez scowls at me.

"Fernando," Tris says, "why don't you come with us? I suspect we're going to need your technical know-how."

Fernando nods happily, obviously pleased to be wanted. The only problem is, I don't want him. But I know Tris is probably right, from what I saw in Linus's file.

"Good," I make myself say, "You should probably look at Linus's notes on the perimeter then. He has specific directions for how to get through and where they found the monitoring station."

Fernando nods, and practically jumps from the chair to get back to the computers.

"The rest of you should stay here, monitor the three missions, and see what else you can do to make this place inhabitable."
As everyone mills around, talking about the missions, I catch Uriah by the shoulder and motion him out into the corridor.

"Be really careful," I say to him softly. "We don't know if Christopher is actually Divergent, let alone if he can be trusted. Let's go look at the map and see what makes sense for a drop site. It has to be something we can get to by train, but with an unseen approach."

"Not too far away," he grins, "but just far enough."

"Exactly."

"As long as we're alone for a second, I've been meaning to ask you - how's Tris doing? Is she still having trouble sleeping and stuff?"

I look at him, trying not to show my confusion.

"When we first got back to Dauntless, she said that she felt like she was back in the simulation every time she closed her eyes. It was really freaking her out." He's waiting for me to answer.

"Uh, yeah. She's a little better. It, uh, comes and goes, you know?"

"Oh hey," he says hastily, "I wasn't trying to pry. I just hope she's okay."

"No, no," I answer, "it's totally fine. I'm glad you're looking out for her. It's good. Yeah."

There's an awkward silence between us until we reach the computer room, where Fernando is already under the serum. We move to the table, where the map is spread out and start looking through the marked safe houses.

Uriah points to a green dot about halfway between our new headquarters and Amity.

"Zeke and I took a look at this one. I think it used to be a school or something. There are lots of good spaces for hiding things, and there's an underground tunnel that comes up in the middle of the campus. It's not on the same train line as we are, so we'd have to jump off here," he pokes the map, "and get on this line over here."

"Not great for moving cargo," I muse, "but keeping our location safe is more important. Let's do it."

Uriah nods. "We'll get going right away, then."

"While you're there, see if you can snag a little of the peace serum. What I really want is some of Candor's truth serum, but the peace serum might come in handy at some point, too. You never know."

"Got it - when are you going to head out?"

I flick my chin toward Fernando's prone form. "As soon as he's up and around."

"Good luck," Uriah says, tightening his fingers on my arm. "Be careful, okay?"

"You, too."

Uriah walks out the door to go get his team, and Inez walks in - she must have been waiting in the corridor for him to leave.

She just looks at me.

"What?" I finally say.

"What did I tell you about going on missions with Tris?"

I hold up my hands, shaking my head. "I know, I know. I'm stupid when she's around, blah blah. I know." Inez is glaring at me, hands on her hips. "And I'm not denying that I lose my edge when I'm with her. But I thought a lot about it, and decided the pluses outweigh the minuses. Tris and I are totally compatible..."

"You're just sleeping together. That doesn't mean anything." she snorts.

"Well, first of all, to me, it means everything. Second, it's more than that: it's like having a sixth sense. We understand each other's moves, the way we think - we are much more effective together than we are apart."

We stare at each other thoughtfully. "I think you and I are both used to being alone," I say softly, "but alone isn't always better. Tris and I see more, understand more, cover more ground together than we do without each other. It's worth the fact that I'm a little protective and not always thinking strictly about the mission when I'm close to her."

"A little protective?" she scoffs, but I can tell I've won her over. "Fine. But I'm coming, too."

I shake my head. "You need to stay here with Jose."

"Laila will look out for him," she says grimly. "Cara says nothing's going to happen right away; the break point is likely to be late tonight or tomorrow morning, If he's not better, she's going to have to open him up."

I shudder at her dispassionate voice, and at the thought of anyone having his head drilled into.

"Please, Four," she finally says. "I need to be able to think about something else."

I look at her for a minute, but now she won't meet my eyes, which is very unlike Inez.

"Okay," I breathe, and she smiles up at me.

"I'll be with Jose. Come and get me when it's time to go."
