Hey, everyone! Here's Chapter 53 of Pokémon Journey: Kanto! :)
Last chapter, James, Livvi and Richard stopped off in Pallet Town to see James' family and for Saeloc to rejoin James' team before heading on to Viridian City. Once there, Livvi fought another battle with her older sister, Tessa, but ended up being defeated once again.

Chapter 53: Old Faces, A New Gym Badge
Viridian City, Kanto
11:03am, 1st June 2005
Bright sunlight shone down on Viridian City as James and his team began their final preparations for their gym battle.
"Alright, Ayra, try it again!" James called.
Ayra nodded. He focused himself and a deep green glow surrounded him.
"Now try firing it at Kacha!" James ordered.
Ayra nodded again. He fired the green aura in a beam towards Kacha, but it faded away before it could hit.
"You need to focus more on keeping the energy together!" Tessa called to them as she walked over.
"Easy for you to say," James sighed, patting Ayra reassuringly on the head. "We've been working on it for two hours now and we haven't gotten anywhere."
"Just have a bit more patience." Tessa grinned. "I'll help out as well."
"I don't understand why you wanted to teach Ayra how to use Giga Drain in the first place," Livvi said as she walked over as well. "Bullet Seed was a perfectly good attack."
"It was reliable, but Giga Drain is more powerful," James replied. "Plus it gives Ayra some of the energy it drains from the opponent."
"It'll be useful to him at the league as well," Richard added. "Ayra isn't a particularly tough pokémon, so he needs to have moves that can knock out his opponents quickly and, by restoring his energy as well it keeps him in the fight for a little longer."
"Exactly." James nodded in agreement. He turned back to Tessa. "So, what does he need to do?"
"There's nothing wrong with his actions," Tessa replied. "He needs to focus more if he's going to channel the energy into the beam."
"That'll only come with practice," Richard said with a sigh.
"Yeah." Tessa nodded. "If I'm honest, I think you were a little ambitious at trying to teach him how to use Giga Drain in the morning before a gym battle – it's a complicated attack to use."
"It's too late now," James sighed in response. "Is there no way of speeding up Ayra's training?"
"He could try directing the beam with his pincers," Tessa replied. "It's not a perfect solution, but it should help."
"How would that help?" Livvi asked. "The problem is that the attack is fading away too soon, not that it's missing."
"Ayra can use his pincers to funnel the energy," Tessa replied. "That way it'll be more focused."
"Let's try that." James nodded. "You ready, Ayra, Kacha?"
Ayra and Kacha both nodded.
"Alright, Ayra, use Giga Drain!" James called. "Use your pincers to try and guide the beam!"
Ayra nodded. He held his pincers out in front of him and fired the green beam towards Kacha, only for it to fade away again. This time, however, it had gotten closer to Kacha before failing.
"Still no good," James sighed.
"It'll work if you're at close range." Richard pointed out. "It was the same with Bullet Seed when you fire taught it to him."
"That's a good point." James nodded.
"Give it a little longer and I'm sure you can at least master an improvised version of Giga Drain," Tessa said.
"Alright." James nodded. "We'll focus on training Ayra for the next hour or two, but then I want to head to the gym."
1:25pm, 1st June 2005
The Viridian gym was located in the north-eastern district of the city, away from the main routes through the city.
"I'm surprised you guys even knew where to find it," James said to Tessa and Livvi as they approached it.
"I've challenged it before, remember?" Tessa pointed out. "And I won." She showed him a green badge which slightly resembled a flower. "This is the Earth Badge!"
"So, what was the gym leader like?" James asked.
"He was a really tough trainer," Tessa replied. "His pokémon were all really tough physically. I needed to use clever tactics to overcome them."
"Don't forget the first part of the story, Tessa!" Livvi grinned cheerfully.
"I ended up losing the first time," Tessa admitted. "But Giovanni of the Viridian gym is renowned as one of the toughest gym leaders in Kanto, so there's no shame in that."
"You've got to beat him in one go, James!" Livvi said firmly, patting him on the shoulder. "That way one of us will have done better than Tessa at least!"
"What kind of pokémon did Giovanni have?" James asked.
"Big ones," Tessa replied. "Pokémon like rhydon, kangaskhan and nidoqueen. Nidoqueen was his main."
"It was?"
"Yeah." Tessa nodded. She held out her Pokédex, which she'd set to the page for nidoqueen.
"Nidoqueen, the drill pokémon and the evolved form of nidorina. Nidoqueen's body is encased in extremely hard scales. It is adept at sending foes flying with harsh tackles. This pokémon is at its strongest when it is defending its young."
"That sounds pretty fearsome." James gulped.
"You can't defeat it with physical attacks," Tessa replied. "You need to defeat it using ranged attacks like Ice Beam or Hydro Pump."
"Thanks for the advice." James nodded as they walked up the steps and entered the gym. He immediately headed to the reception desk. "I'd like to challenge the Viridian gym please," he said.
"Can I see your trainer card?" the receptionist asked.
"Sure." James nodded, handing it over.
"Thanks," the receptionist replied as she took the card. She swiped it in the swipe machine to bring up the data on her computer. "Are you already aware of what's happened recently regarding the gym leader?" she asked.
"No." James shook his head. He looked back at the other three. They all gave puzzled looks as well.
"Well, due to some events which took place recently, the gym leader, Giovanni, has disappeared and has been removed from his post by the Pokémon Association," the receptionist replied. "Until we get the chance to elect a new gym leader, one of our gym trainers is our acting gym leader."
"But I can still get my last gym badge here, right?" James asked.
"That's right." The receptionist nodded. "You can go straight in," she added as she handed him his trainer card.
"Thanks." James nodded, taking it. The four of them headed for the door to the arena.
"I wonder what happened," Livvi said thoughtfully.
"Well, there were rumours that he was involved in organised crime," Tessa replied, lowering her voice to a whisper. "I don't know if this has anything to do with this."
"At least I won't have to face that powerful nidoqueen now." James gave a sigh of relief.
"Good luck, James!" Richard grinned as he and the girls prepared to walk up the stairs to the stands.
"Yeah, good luck, James!" Livvi smiled.
"Remember everything that I taught you during training!" Tessa grinned, giving him a thumbs up.
"Thanks, guys!" James grinned back. "See you in a bit!"
1:31pm, 1st June 2005
The first thing James noticed as he stepped into the arena was how similar it was to the Pewter gym. The battlefield was strewn with rocks, providing excellent conditions for rock types. A difference, he noted, was that the battlefield was covered with sand as well. This was going to make it difficult for his pokémon to move around effectively. A figure came into view at the other end of the battlefield.
"Is that you, James?" it called.
That voice, James thought for a second. "Doug?" he called out as he recognised it.
"It is you!" Doug, the ground type user from the SS Anne Tournament, grinned at him. "I thought you'd end up here eventually!"
"It's good to see you again!" James called.
"I'm actually really glad that you came now!" Doug called back. "Since our gym leader, Giovanni, is gone, I've been appointed acting gym leader for the time being!"
"So, you're my opponent?" James grinned. "That's fine with me!"
"Just so that you know," Doug replied, "I've become stronger since we fought in Vermilion City – I'm feeling pretty confident!"
"Well, I've got stronger too!" James called.
"Then let's get started!" Doug grinned. He nodded at his colleague, who was stood at one side of the arena.
"This is an official Pokémon League gym battle between the acting gym leader of Viridian City, Doug, and the challenger, James Burton from Pallet Town!" the referee announced. "The match will be a four-on-four single battle and the match will be over when all four of one side's pokémon are unable to battle! In addition, only the challenger is allowed to substitute pokémon!"
"Go, Rhyhorn!" Doug called, throwing out a poké ball.
Rhyhorn roared as he burst out of his ball and landed with a thud on the sand.
"Go, Saeloc!" James called as he threw out his own poké ball.
Saeloc cried out as she materialised. She shot a determined look at Rhyhorn.
"So, Saeloc evolved?" Doug grinned. "Congratulations, James!"
"Thanks!" James called back.
"Begin!" the referee shouted.
"Use Screech!" James called.
Saeloc let out an ear-splitting screech.
""Use Scary Face!" Doug shouted over the noise of Saeloc's attack.
Rhyhorn gave a pained nod and shot a fearsome look back towards Saeloc, who, unnerved, stopped screeching.
"Use Icy Wind!" James yelled.
Saeloc fired an Icy Wind towards Rhyhorn, hitting him before he could react.
"I should have known that you'd keep Icy Wind!" Doug laughed. "Rhyhorn, you okay?"
Rhyhorn gave himself a shake and nodded.
"Alright, use Rock Blast!" Doug ordered.
Rhyhorn nodded again. He quickly fired a series of small boulders towards Saeloc.
"Dodge it!" James ordered.
Saeloc, though slowed by the sand, jumped to one side. She was still hit by two of the five blasts though.
"Now use Stomp!" Doug called as Saeloc crashed to the ground.
Rhyhorn nodded and started charging towards Saeloc, slowed only slightly by the deep sand beneath his feet.
"Dodge and use Slash!" James called to Saeloc.
Saeloc pulled herself to her feet and jumped back to avoid Rhyhorn's attack. As soon as he'd slammed his foot harmlessly into the ground, she rushed forward again and swiped at the side of Rhyhorn's face with her right claw.
Rhyhorn gave a grunt of displeasure and shook Saeloc off.
"Now use Icy Wind!" James shouted as Saeloc landed.
She nodded and fired another Icy Wind towards Rhyhorn.
"Dodge it!" Doug called.
Rhyhorn lumbered to the side and took cover behind one of the many rocks littering the battlefield.
"Use Bite!" James called to Saeloc, who nodded and started charging towards the rock Rhyhorn was hiding behind.
"Dodge it!" Doug shouted.
Rhyhorn made an impressive jump back just as Saeloc made to snap her jaws shut. He landed with a loud crash.
"Now flip Saeloc into the air!" Doug shouted.
Rhyhorn drove his horn into Saeloc's underside and sent her flying into the air.
"Now use Thunderbolt!" Doug shouted.
Rhyhorn fired a blast of electricity towards Saeloc, who was in no position to dodge.
"Are you alright, Saeloc?" James shouted as the persian crashed back to the ground, black smoke rising from singed parts of her fur.
Saeloc pulled herself unsteadily back to her feet and nodded.
"Alright, use Icy Wind!" James shouted. "As quickly as you can!"
Saeloc fired an icy blast of air towards Rhyhorn.
"Get out of the way!" Doug shouted.
Rhyhorn tried to dodge but was too slow and was caught by the attack.
"Use Stomp!" Doug shouted as Rhyhorn pulled himself back to his feet.
Rhyhorn nodded and started charging towards Saeloc.
"Use Icy Wind, one last time!" James shouted as Rhyhorn drew near.
Saeloc fired another Icy Wind towards Rhyhorn, hitting him and forcing him back.
"Rhyhorn!" Doug cried in alarm as he crashed to the ground.
"Rhyhorn is unable to battle!" the referee shouted. "The winner is Persian!"
"Great work, Saeloc!" James grinned, running over to pat her on the head.
Saeloc purred back happily.
"He's off to a good start!" Livvi smiled as she looked down at the battlefield.
"Hopefully he can keep it up." Richard nodded. "Still, I was surprised that Doug is the acting gym leader – I didn't know he was that influential at the gym."
"He didn't tell us that much about his role at the gym though." Livvi pointed out.
"So, do you guys know him?" Tessa asked.
"James fought him at the SS Anne Tournament in Vermilion City," Richard replied.
"Looks like Doug's sent out his next pokémon," Livvi said, pointing down at the arena.
Doug's graveler roared, giving Saeloc a determined look.
"I don't think you've fought Graveler before!" Doug called to James.
"No, I haven't!" James replied. He looked at Saeloc. "Use Screech!" he ordered.
Saeloc screeched, causing everyone in the room to clutch their ears.
"Now use Slash!" James shouted over the din.
Saeloc stopped screeching and charged towards Graveler, landing an impressive slash on Graveler's side. Graveler winced in pain, Saeloc's attack having fought a weak spot in his rocky armour.
"Use Rock Throw!" Doug called.
Graveler stopped clutching his side and grabbed a rock from the arena floor. He threw it with all his might towards Saeloc. She cried in pain as she was hit.
"Now use Magnitude!" Doug shouted as Saeloc tried to recover from the previous hit.
Graveler stamped the ground, causing the whole arena to start shaking violently. Saeloc cried out as she was sent flying by the shockwave. She crashed into one of the rocks, but pulled herself back up.
"Use Icy Wind!" James shouted immediately.
Saeloc nodded and fired an icy blast of air towards Graveler, hitting him before he could take cover.
"Use Defence Curl and then Rollout!" Doug shouted.
Graveler grimaced as Saeloc's Icy Wind whipped across him. He tucked himself into a ball and then started rolling towards Saeloc, gaining more and more speed as he did. Saeloc cried in pain as she was hit and thrown back.
"Saeloc, return!" James called as she started falling back to the ground, recalling her to her poké ball. He pulled out another ball and threw it. "Go, Raenok!"
Raenok called as he burst out of the ball.
Graveler was still rolling and turned to plough into Raenok, sending him flying back.
"Are you alright, Raenok?" James called as Graveler circled around for his next attack.
Raenok nodded as he got back up.
"Alright, wait for Graveler to get close to you!" James called.
Raenok nodded. He waited as Graveler turned around and started rolling towards him again.
"Use Cross Chop!" James shouted as Graveler approached.
Raenok crossed his forearms, which glowed dark red, and brought them apart as Graveler moved into range.
Graveler cried in pain. He veered off course as Raenok leapt clear and crashed into the arena wall beneath Livvi, Richard and Tessa.
"Are you alright, Graveler?" Doug called.
Graveler rolled back out of the wall and pulled himself to his feet.
"Finish up with Brick Break!" James shouted.
Raenok leapt forwards, his right fist glowing dark red. He smashed his fist into Graveler before he could react. Graveler cried in pain as he slumped to the ground.
"Graveler is unable to battle!" the referee announced. "The winner is Mankey!"
"Thanks for your hard work, Graveler!" Doug smiled as he recalled him.
"You deserve a rest as well, Raenok, return!" James recalled Raenok to his poké ball as well.
"Go, Sandshrew!" Doug called, throwing out his next poké ball.
"I choose you, Ayra!" James shouted.
Doug's sandshrew and Ayra both cried out as they burst out of their balls and landed softly on the ground.
"Start off with Aerial Ace!" James called.
Ayra sprang forwards, though his progress was slowed by the sandy terrain.
"Aerial Ace, huh?" Doug looked impressed. "I guess we'll use Swift then!"
Sandshrew nodded. He fired a series of star-shaped blasts towards Ayra. He cried in pain as he was hit by the blasts and thrown back.
"Use Poison Sting!" Doug yelled.
Sandshrew nodded and started towards Ayra, delivered a quick stab with one of his claws. Ayra cried in pain as Sandshrew jumped back again.
"Are you alright Ayra?" James called.
Ayra nodded.
"Alright, use Giga Drain!" James ordered.
Ayra nodded. He fired a green beam of energy towards Sandshrew, but it faded away just before it could hit him.
"Use Sand Attack!" Doug shouted.
Sandshrew nodded and kicked a cloud of sand into Ayra's face. Ayra cried in surprise and pain.
"Keep calm, Ayra!" James called urgently.
"Use another Sand Attack!" Doug shouted.
Sandshrew nodded and kicked another cloud of sand into Ayra's face.
"Counter with Giga Drain!" James called.
Ayra, with his eyes tightly closed, attempted to fire a Giga Drain towards Sandshrew, but it failed abysmally.
"Use Poison Sting!" Doug shouted.
Sandshrew nodded. He charged back towards Ayra and stabbed him with his claw again. Ayra cried in pain. As Sandshrew jumped back, James noticed that Ayra had started shuddering – one of the early signs of being poisoned. They needed to regain the initiative… and quickly!
"Use Aerial Ace!" James shouted.
Ayra sprang forwards as quickly as he could in the sand and managed to catch Sandshrew off guard. He cried in pain as he was hit and thrown back.
"Are you alright, Sandshrew?" Doug called.
Sandshrew nodded.
"Alright, use Dig!" Doug ordered.
Sandshrew started digging a hole in the ground.
"Quick, use Aerial Ace!" James shouted to Ayra.
Ayra charged forwards again, but arrived too late – Sandshrew was already underground. A few seconds later, there was an eruption of sand behind Ayra as Sandshrew burrowed his way up again and struck Ayra from behind.
"Use Giga Drain behind you!" James shouted as Ayra recovered.
Ayra fired a Giga Drain beam, but it faded away before hitting its target again.
"You need to focus as hard as you can and use your pincers to help focus your energy Ayra!" James shouted as Sandshrew dove back underground. An idea hit him. "Ayra, start storing Spores!"
Ayra nodded. He started gathering Spores in his tochukaso. Seconds later, Sandshrew burst out of the ground to Ayra's left.
"Release!" James shouted as Sandshrew leapt up to attack.
Ayra fired out a cloud of spores in all directions around him.
Sandshrew cried in surprise. He immediately became more sluggish before collapsing and falling asleep.
"No! Sandshrew, you need to wake up!" Doug yelled.
"Now use Giga Drain!" James shouted. "Turn to your left and focus!"
Ayra nodded. He turned to the exact point James had told him and fired a green beam towards Sandshrew, using his pincers to focus his energy. Sandshrew cried in pain as the attack hit and Ayra drained his energy.
"Sandshrew! Are you alright?" Doug called.
Sandshrew cried out weakly in response.
"Sandshrew is unable to battle!" the referee called. "The winner is Paras!"
"Great work, Ayra!" James grinned.
Ayra cried back, waving one of his pincers in James' direction.
"I've got to admit – you've grown stronger than I anticipated, James!" Doug called over as he recalled Sandshrew. He pulled out his last poké ball. "Let's make this last round as good as we can!"
"Yeah!" James nodded.
"Go, Donphan!" Doug called, throwing out the ball.
A large-ish, elephant-like pokémon with two tusks and long, pointy ears emerged from the ball.
"Donphan?" James held up his Pokédex.
"Data not found."
"Is that your phanpy?" James asked as he put the Pokédex away with a sigh.
"Yeah." Doug nodded. "He evolved a little while ago."
"I need to get a National Pokédex at some point," James sighed.
"Let's begin!" Doug grinned. "Donphan, use Defence Curl!"
Donphan curled up to conceal his weak spots.
"Use Giga Drain!" James called.
Ayra nodded and fired a Giga Drain beam, only for it to go in a completely different direction.
"Use Rollout!" Doug shouted to Donphan, who immediately started rolling towards Ayra, hitting him and sending him flying back. Ayra cried in pain as he hit the ground hard.
"Alright, return." James pulled out Ayra's poké ball and recalled him. "You did a great job, Ayra. Have a nice rest!" He pulled out another poké ball. "Let's go, Leytor!"
Leytor cried as he burst out of the ball and landed on the sandy ground. He gave the still-rolling Donphan a cautious look.
"Use Water Pulse!" James shouted.
Leytor nodded and fired an orb of water towards Donphan, only for him to evade it and continue rolling towards Leytor. The seel cried out as he was hit and flung back.
"Use Ice Beam!" James ordered as Leytor pulled himself up again.
Leytor nodded and fired a pure white beam of ice towards Donphan
"Dodge it and continue using Rollout!" Doug shouted.
Donphan gave a muffled cry in response as he moved over to the left to avoid Leytor's attack and continued rolling towards him. Leytor cried in pain as he was hit again.
"Are you alright, Leytor?" James cried in alarm.
Leytor nodded.
"Use Ice Beam on the ground!" James called suddenly as Donphan circled for another charge.
Leytor nodded and fired an Ice Beam at the ground in front of his opponent. Donphan cried in confusion as he lost his grip and skidded to a halt on his back.
"Use Water Pulse!" James shouted as Donphan struggled to right himself.
Leytor fired an orb of water towards Donphan, hitting him. Donphan cried out in pain.
"Use Take Down!" Doug called.
Donphan tenuously managed to pull himself back to his feet. He immediately started charging towards Leytor, but ended up slipping on the ice and crashing down on his belly instead.
"Use Earthquake!" Doug shouted as an Ice Beam from Leytor passed narrowly above Donphan.
Donphan pulled himself up again and stamped the ground, causing the whole arena to shake violently. Leytor cried in pain as he was thrown into one of the nearby rocks. The ice beneath Donphan's feet broke up into several pieces.
"Now use Take Down again!" Doug shouted.
Donphan charged forwards again.
"Use Water Pulse!" James called to Leytor, who was still slightly dazed from the last attack.
He nodded and managed to fire a Water Pulse towards the approaching Donphan. His opponent burst through the Water Pulse, but immediately changed direction and crashed into the arena wall, not far from where Graveler had crashed earlier.
"He's confused!" James shouted to Leytor. "Use Ice Beam!"
Leytor nodded and fired a beam of ice towards Donphan, hitting him directly.
"Donphan!" Doug cried in alarm.
Donphan's weak response was muffled further by the layer of ice he was now encased by.
"Donphan is unable to battle!" the referee announced. "Seel is the winner! All of Doug's pokémon are unable to battle, so the match goes to the challenger!"
"Thanks, Leytor!" James grinned, walking over to pat Leytor on the head.
Leytor responded with a smile.
"You did a great job, Donphan, I'm sorry we couldn't have at least beaten one of them," Doug sighed as he walked over and recalled Donphan. He turned to James. "That was a really exciting battle – I'm glad we were able to have it!"
"Yeah." James nodded. He shook Doug's hand. "I had a great time."
"Here you go." Doug handed him the Earth Badge. "That's the Viridian gym badge, the Earth Badge."
"Awesome." James held it up and gazed in wonder at it. "My last gym badge."
"That's your eighth badge?" Doug asked.
"Yeah." James nodded.
"Great! You're all ready for the Kanto League now!" Doug grinned. "I'll be cheering for you!"
"Thanks, Doug!" James grinned back.
1:57pm, 1st June 2005
"Great work, James!" Livvi grinned as James met up with her, Richard and Tessa in the reception area.
"Yeah, congratulations," Tessa nodded.
"That's eight badges now!" Richard grinned. "You're going to the Kanto League!"
"Thanks, guys!" James smiled, looking round at them.
"So, what do you want to do now?" Livvi asked.
"I want to stop by the pokémon centre and get my pokémon healed up first," James replied. "After that, I think it's best if we set off straight for the Indigo Plateau."
"I agree." Tessa nodded. "It normally takes four or five days to travel along Routes 22 and 23, but if we're quick we could do it quicker."
"How are we for supplies?" James asked Richard.
"Mostly okay," Richard replied. "I think Livvi's mum was going to stock us up before we left."
"I was planning on stopping off at home before leaving anyway," Livvi said. "Did you want me to pick everything up while you go to the pokémon centre?"
"No, it's fine," James replied. "We'll go to the pokémon centre and then stop off at your house – it'd be rude to leave without saying 'thank you'."
"Sounds like a plan." Richard nodded.
"Right! Let's get going then!" James grinned. As they left the gym, he glanced once more at his new Earth Badge. He was finally ready for the Kanto League!
So here we are – the final gym battle! How did everyone find it? And did Doug being the acting gym leader come as a surprise to everyone?
Since we've now had all the gym battles, did anyone notice the two-part pattern in them? Mr. Grool correctly pointed out a few chapters ago that James has lost every other gym battle (against Brock, Lt. Surge, Koga and Blaine), which is the first part of the pattern. Can anyone identify the other part of the pattern? Even if no one gets it, then I'll still reveal the answer next week! :P
Anyway, now it's only really the league left in the story!
Until next time! :)
