The Lonesome Road - Chapter 49

Ruby Rose waited nervously in the room next door. She twiddled her thumbs. Her leg bounced with an impatient rhythm.

An entire world of events was overwhelming her head.

The Vytal Festival. Final Exams. Birthdays. Weiss' recovery. Neo's debt. White Fang attacks.

Her girlfriend's sight was the sour icing on top.

Even for the quickest girl in the world, this was all happening too fast.

The door opened.

"She's done." The Doctor informed. "The results are in."

Ruby nodded. Her feet stepped forward with nervous hesitation.

Weiss opened her eyes.

It was frigid. A wisp of fading warmth appeared after every breath. The average person would have felt chilled to the bone.

The Snow Queen felt at home. The cold air of her native country refreshed Weiss' lungs with every breath.

She sat on a bench somewhere in the heart of the city. A subway track rested in front of her. People walked by the busy path behind her, waiting for their train. The sound of the miscellaneous chatter around her was surprisingly calming.

She noticed the leather gloves covering her hands.

Her curiosity peaked. She looked down at herself: Jeans, a blue windbreaker, and white sneakers.

Something was in her pocket. Her gloved hand reached inside and pulled out a slip of paper: a train ticket.

Her memory was unclear. She didn't remembered putting on these clothes. She turned to the person sitting at her side.

Her heart stopped. Her words were instantly lost in shock.

"Hey there, big girl." The figure greeted with a warm grin, staring out to the skyline before them. "The sun's getting real low, isn't it?"

Weiss stared in awe at the figure. "Winn?"

Weiss' heart raced. She wanted to apologize. She wanted to laugh. She wanted to tell her everything.

Weiss ignored those thoughts for the moment. She did the thing she longed to do for five long years.

Without a second thought, Weiss hugged Winter close.

"You're growing up so fast." Winter mumbled with a smile. She broke the hug, overlooking her sister. "I'm proud of you, little rabbit."

"I wish I could tell you everything." Weiss admitted. "About Ruby, Blake, and Yang..."

"I understand." Winter smiled. "I'm glad you found a family of your own."

"A lot has changed over the past several months..." Weiss swallowed her nerves. "I'm dating-"

"Ruby's a lovely girl." Winter commented warmly, as if reading her sister's mind. "Of course I approve. We would have been great friends."

Weiss grew silent. A look of somber longing filled her eyes. Even if she knew this was in her head, it brought her more comfort than anything else.

"You're going places and…I can't go with you. No matter how much I want to." Winter's gaze became sweetly somber. "You're all grown up and I'm not there to see it."

Weiss felt tears threaten against her eyes.

"Maybe we'll see each other again someday." Winn acknowledged. "But for now, we're running out of time. You have a train to catch."

The sound of train brakes screeched through the station. Weiss rose to her feet. She hugged her sister once more, terrified to let her go.

"Good luck, Weiss. We'll see each other again, I'm sure of it." Winter gave one last warm smile. "Go seize the day."

Weiss walked towards the train. She didn't know its destination, but that didn't seem important to her right now. It was the goodbye. This was important.

The Heiress looked over her shoulder. Winter was looking on supportively from the distance. Just the thought of her sister awakened her spirits. Winn lifts her up when she's feeling down.

Even if only in memory, Weiss still had a sister.

Weiss opened her eyes.

She felt the tears on her eyes, but she couldn't see them. She felt the kiss of sunlight, but she couldn't see it.

She clutched Ruby's image close at heart, hoping it would never fade into obscurity.

Her world was colorless. Her life was dark.

Weiss Schnee was blind.
