Sutton stood there staring at her family. Kendall was curled on her bed. She held a tiny teddy bear in her arms and occasionally she'd look over at her mother's lifeless body, anytime she spoke, Sutton couldn't hear her. It killed her not hearing her daughter's voice. She missed it. The last words Kendall spoke to her when she was still alive were in anger. She would have given anything to go back to that moment on the stairs, to tell her daughter how much she meant to her. She wanted to kiss her forehead, play with her hair and hold her until she fell asleep in her arms. A hand gently laid on Sutton's shoulder and she spun around, "Thayer?" She said spinning around, but it was only Ted, "Dad, you're back." She clarified. She looked back at the group of people sitting in that hospital room, "Why can't I go back to them?" She asked. She ran her hand through Thayer's thick brown hair, "They are my family. You know how important family is."
Ted nodded, "I do know how important family is, baby. You've done a wonderful job, Sutton." He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, "I'm so proud of you." He kissed her temple and looked at her, "I want you to know that I'm so proud of everything you and your sisters have accomplished. Kendall, Aubrea, and Ryleigh are the most beautiful granddaughter's any grandfather could ask for. It's not easy having to watch your family like it's some kind of TV show. You crave the things you took for granted. You crave just holding your kids again. You crave kissing your spouse one more time and it hurts because you know you will never get those moments back." Ted squeezed Sutton tightly, "Live your life, Sutton. Be that amazing woman I know you are. My strong-willed, bull-headed baby girl." Then he kissed her forehead before disappearing into darkness.
"Not this again." She said feeling the darkness surround her, "Come on!" She shouted, "Let me go home." But then she felt something. Really felt something. It was a set of fingers, gently caressing hers. A tingle shot up her arm. She managed to slightly open her eyes, they fluttered and she looked at Thayer, "Thayer?" Her voice was weak.
His head shot up at the sound of her voice, "Sutton?" His face lit up, but something was different. He looked different. This wasn't the same guy she was just touching. His hair was styled differently. Much like it had been back in LA.
"Where's Kendall?" She said. Her voice was soft and cracked. Her eyes darted around the room, "Emma?" she said, "What are you doing here? You weren't here before."
Emma stood up, "I've been here the whole time Sutton. You really scared us."
Sutton pushed herself up the pillows, "What are you talking about? Where's my daughters?" She asked looking around at her family.
Thayer took her hand, "Sweet heart, what daughters?" He asked gently.
Sutton looked at him like he was stupid, "Kendall? Aubrea? Your kids, Thayer. Where are they?"
Emma looked at Sutton and then at Thayer, "Sutton. The baby is still growing inside of you."
Sutton shot her head at Emma, "What baby? I'm not pregnant." She spat angrily. She looked at Thayer waiting for him to tell her where Kendall was. She had just been there, she couldn't have gone very far. Maybe she was in the bathroom.
Emma and Thayer looked at each other and Thayer stroked her hand, "Sutton, sweetheart, you are 15 weeks pregnant. Do you remember that?" He looked up at Emma, a worried look on his face.
Sutton shook her head, "No!" She shouted, "Don't you remember? I had Aubrea 2 months ago. I'm not pregnant." She looked down at her arm. The bruises weren't there anymore and she looked up at Thayer, suddenly she was terrified, "What's going on?" She looked at Emma.
"You were in a car accident, Sutton. You hit your head on the steering wheel. You've been in a coma for two weeks." Thayer said gently.
Sutton looked at him, "No. The car accident was last night. Don't you remember? You were there, Kendall was there too. I saw you. I saw you when they pulled my body from the car." She reached for his hands, "I'm so sorry for storming out on you, Thayer. I should have listened to you. I should have listened to Kendall when she begged me not to go."
"Sweet heart, who is Kendall?" Thayer asked. He brushed a tangled hair from her face.
Sutton shook her head, "She's your five year old daughter. Don't you remember her? She was just here." She looked around again waiting for her daughter to run from behind a corner or burst into the room in joy that Sutton was awake.
"I don't know who Kendall is, sweet heart. We don't even know the gender of our baby yet." He said stroking her arm.
"What are you talking about? We have two daughters. Kendall and Aubrea. How do you not know your own children?" She said shaking her head. She looked at Emma and something caught her eye. She reached for Emma's hand, "Em, where's your wedding ring?"
Emma pulled her hand back, "What? I'm not married, Sutton."
Sutton's eyes darted between Thayer and Emma, "You are married Emma. You're married to Ethan and you have a 15 month old daughter named Ryleigh." Then her eyes darted to Thayer, "You and I are engaged still, right?"
Thayer's heart stopped at words. Marriage hadn't even crossed his mind. Having a baby was enough to deal with, but getting married? He wasn't sure he was ready for that, "Babe, I don't know what you're talking about."
Sutton looked at her left hand, her tiny Tiffany's engagement band was no longer on her finger. She shook her head, "Where did it go? I never take it off." She said.
Emma sat on the bed beside her sister, "Sutton, you were hit really hard. You're not engaged. I'm not married and I don't have a baby named Ryleigh. You are 18 weeks pregnant with Thayer's baby. You were in a car accident and you've been in a coma for two weeks." She confirmed. She hated being the one to bring Sutton back to reality, but she knew her sister was only going to be more confused.
Sutton looked at Thayer, a sudden sadness overcame her, "Kendall doesn't exist?" She asked bitterly. Thayer shook his head. "What about Aubrea?" Again, he shook his head. "But you left when I was pregnant with Kendall."
"I came back when Emma called me about the crash. I realize that leaving because I was scared was a stupid reason to leave. I'm here now, Sutton. For you and for our baby." He kissed her cheek.
Sutton looked at Emma, "Wait. How old are we?"
Emma smiled, "Eighteen." She said.
"So none of it was real? Kendall, Aubrea, Ryleigh. Where do we live?" She asked. Her heart pounded, the love she had for a child that never existed still throbbed deep within her. She still longed for those little arms wrapping around her.
"We live with mom still." Emma said. She put her feet up on Sutton's bed and cuddled into her sister's side, resting her head on her sister's shoulder.
Sutton shook her head, "It was all a dream." She said, "Everything. My family, our lives, the affair, the abortion, the kidnapping. None of it was real."
Thayer looked at her, "I'm so sorry baby." He said kissing her. "It was a dream. But you're safe now. Everything will be okay now. I'm not going to leave again." He squeezed Sutton's hand and smiled at her.
Sutton looked at Emma and then looked at Thayer. "So I'm having your baby, huh?"
Thayer smiled and nodded, "We're going be a family." He said. His thumb ran over her skin and it caused a tingle to run up her arm. Maybe this wasn't such a bad thing. She thought. If nothing she'd dreamt was real then maybe she was given a second chance. A second chance to live the life and have the family she'd thought she'd messed up before. She knew she loved Thayer and she finally knew he loved her too. She looked at him and smiled. He smiled back and leaned in to kiss her. His lips on hers felt like they did when he kissed her on the beach in LA. That same special spark sparked between them. She deepened the kissed and smiled.
When she pulled back she looked at him, "If we have a girl, can we name her Kendall Aubrea?" She asked.
Thayer nodded, "Absolutely, baby." Then he kissed her again. He wrapped his hand around the nape of her neck and pulled her into him. As much as she longed for the loved of the little girls she'd created in her head, she knew that the baby growing inside of her was going to love her just as her dream daughter's did and she was excited to get to start a new life with the people she loved more than anything in the world.
