Norma immediately freaked out internally, she knew not to contact Katie for the time being, she would worry as well and come back to the house. If Steven was near her on the property or in the home, he could be dangerous and neither Katie nor Ella would certainly be harmed on her part. While painting, she already had the door open a creak, she shut it and locked the bolt.
Her back weighted against the wood, hoping that if he was nearby he wouldn't do anything irrational. Who was she kidding? Of course he was nearby, he knew what colors the baby's walls were. She re-dialed her phone, this time Alex's number. Luckily, he answered on the first ring.
"Hey baby, what's going on?" he asked, sounding calmed down. Norma internally kicked herself she felt so bad bothering him on his only down time. His fishing trip was meant to bring him peace not wind him up. Fucking Steven.
"I need you to come home immediately," she whispered, paranoid that he was right outside the door and listening to every word leaving her lips. "I need you to come home and be armed."
She could hear his breathing start flowing faster, "What are you talking about? What is going on?".
"Alex please..." she said, her voice starting to grow muffled by the arising tears now falling down her cheeks, "I need you right now."
"Okay, I'll be there in five minutes tops. You stay put and just take some deep breaths," Norma could hear him move in the background, possibly picking everything up to go back to the SUV. His soothing voice never stopped to calm her worried surface.
A few seconds later, she heard the SUV door slam shut and Alex veer away from where ever he was, it was obvious that he was worried. "Will you stay on the phone with me?" she asked, her palms growing sweaty and heart racing as she thought she was in danger.
"Of course, Norma. But you really have to tell me what's going on. I can't just walk in and not know what's in store for me. It's just not safe," he explained, driving on the road as fast as possible.
"Alex, Steven called me and he scared me okay?" she explained, growing more and more freaked out as she explained the situation.
His blood started to boil once he thought of that prick causing any form of harm to Norma, "What do you mean scared you?" he asked, his voice staying as low as her own.
"I think he may be watching me from inside of the house. He told me he liked the paint I chose for the baby's room. How else would he know that unless he was watching?" she asked, growing flustered with the situation.
"Okay, okay...just hang tight, I'm so close by. Just don't leave the room you're in right now. I'm gonna come in and if he's there I'll take care of it," he reassured, his foot pressing down on the gas hard.
She sank down to the floor, phone still in hand while her other ear focused on any possible movement going on outside. If he was gone already he succeed in creeping her out. "Are you close by?" she mumbled, hoping to God that he was already out front.
"I will be in a few seconds, I'm driving with my lights on right now," he said, the gravel from the parking lot spewing up in the air from the fast rolling tires.
She could hear the siren outside, but didn't dare move a muscle. If Steven was actually in the hallway he would burst in and try something stupid she just knew it. "Please be careful," she warned, slowly rising from the floor once she heard the front door open.
"Norma, stay put and don't say a thing until I tell you the coast is clear." He hung up a moment later, knowing that the call would interfere with his search. Slowly he crept through the house, gun raised, easy actions taking him from room to room.
"Hello?" he called out, eyes darting all over the place. His head was completely on a swivel for this task.
"Sheriff, are you looking for something?" he heard behind him, immediately he cocked his gun and twisted around to see Steven, he looked drunk and tired like he'd seen quite a few bad days, Alex could smell the mixed varieties of liquor on his body from a few feet away.
"Steven?" he asked, "Where have you been? Why did you leave your baby with Norma?" the questions flying out of his mouth at rapid pace, this was a clear, clean sweep interrogation just without the typical formality.
"That's none of your business. Besides, why would I tell you anything anyway? I don't need to say anything," he scoffed giving him the nastiest glare he could manage.
"Yeah? And why's that? I could have you arrested for not answering to me," he sneered, if there was anything Alex hated the most it was people that undermined his authority.
"I think your the one that owe's me, stop talking to me like I'm one of your little captors," he spat, moving closer to him. For a man in front of a gun he was gaining confidence pretty rapidly.
"What are you talking about? I don't owe you a damn thing," Alex said, his temper rising it was a wonder why he didn't just shoot the gun off and get rid of him. But this was someone's father...that's what stopped him.
"I beg to differ. I believe you stole something of mine," he grumbled, pulling a gun from the waistband of his jeans and pointing it right back at Alex. This was a standoff that could grow violent at any given moment.
"Look, don't do anything stupid with that, I don't think you know how much trouble your going to get yourself into. Now, let's talk about this like men. What exactly did I steal from you?" he asked, one finger on the trigger and both eyes attached to Steven's muffled face.
Steven's finger moved to the trigger as well, aiming at Alex's chest as that one telltale name left his lips, "Norma," with that he pulled and ran. Leaving Alex to fall to the floor.
There was a trail of blood on the rug and Alex's gun fell from his hand onto the hardwood floor. As he gasped for breath he heard the door slam shut.
Everything immediately went fuzzy.
